There are 225 students in Common Ground’s campus, who attend class on 20 acres (英亩) of land surrounded by West Rock Ridge State Park. Students take classes outside, learn how to tend to the land and grow food for local communities where access to fresh produce is insufficient.
Teachers at Common Ground say their students seem to be more engaged in the classroom when compared to most students at traditional public high schools. They say this is due in part to the autonomy that students are given over their education. “In class, students aren’t just being lectured; they’re experiencing their lessons,” O’connor, a senior at Common Ground said. “We’re very hands on. We’ve had science classes where we go outside and do experiments within nature. We’ll go into the wetlands and do experiments where we interact with the fish or the frogs out there.”
Samantha Townsend, an English teacher at Common Ground said the school encourages students to be active participants in their learning process. “There’s more cooperative learning here where they work in groups and have the opportunity to make a choice about what works best for them in their learning,” Townsend said. “If a student would prefer to write a poem rather than write an essay, then we allow them to tap into their unique passion, skill, or interest.”
“They’re looking at the world in a very different way. They’re thinking about climate change. They’re thinking about the types of food we eat and the impact it has on our bodies and on their communities,” Cherry Pacquette-Emmanuel, High School Director said. She said she wanted students to take their experience at Common Ground and understand their future careers could be anything they want it to be. To not just have a career to have a career, but make sure their life’s work is making a difference. “The fact that the concept for Common Ground came about because there’s some educators that wanted to do things differently and have created this really unique space,” she said.

C. Because they study in a closed campus. D. Because they get experiential education.
6、What does Townsend think of the teaching of Common Ground
A. It was unique to Common Ground. B. It was unfriendly to differences.
C. It was devoted to local communities. D. It was attentive to individuation.
7、What is the School Director’s expectation of the students
A. To be a poet or a writer. B. To pursue their dreams.
C. To understand educators. D. To have a well-paid job.
A new analysis by researchers at MIT has found that inactive yeast (非活性酵母) can help remove lead pollution from drinking water supplies. The study shows that this approach works well, even for part-per-billion levels of pollution. The team has calculated that waste yeast abandoned by a single brewery (啤酒厂) in Boston would be enough to treat the city’s entire water supply. The system would not only purify the water but also change what would otherwise be some waste needing to be got rid of.
Lead and other heavy metals in water are a serious global problem that continues to grow. In the U.S. alone, more than 12,000 miles of waterways are suffering the effect of wastewater rich in heavy metals. What’s worse, heavy metals don’t break down, but continuously exist and accumulate. They are either impossible or very expensive to completely remove by conventional methods. Lead is highly poisonous, even at tiny concentrations, especially affecting children as they grow.“We don’t just need to minimize the existence of lead; we need to remove it from drinking water,” says one of the researchers called Stathatou.
The solution found by the MIT team is not a new one. A process called biosorption, in which inactive biological material is used to remove heavy metals from water, has been known for a few decades. But the process has been studied and characterized only at much higher concentrations, at the levels of more than one part per million.“Our study demonstrates that the process can indeed work efficiently at the much lower concentrations of typical real-world water supplies,” another researcher named Athanasiou says.
Designing a practical system for processing the water and getting back the yeast, which could then be separated from the lead for reuse, is the next stage of the team’s research. They are also exploring ways of recovering both the yeast and the lead, “We need to conduct further experiments, but there is the option to get both back. And it will be a blessing for the world.” Stathatou says.
8、What’s the feature of the new approach for removing lead pollution from drinking water
A. It is costly but worthwhile.
B. It is economical and efficient.
C. It has higher technical requirements.
D. It has been questioned by many experts.
9、What is the purpose of Paragraph 2
A. To state the necessity of removing heavy metals.
B. To arouse people’s awareness of self-protection.
C. To stress on the difficulty of removing heavy metals. .
D. To introduce the feature of heavy metals.
10、What can we know about the process of biosorption from the text
A. It can determine the stability of water supply systems.
B. It tests the inactive substances in water supplies.
C. It can measure the make-up of heavy metals in water supplies.
D. It focuses on removing heavy metals at higher concentrations from water.
11、What does Stathatou think of their future research
A. Amusing. B. Worrying. C. Beneficial. D. Adventurous.
When glaciers melt, they leave behind infertile (贫瘠的) landscapes. But a new study found that within just three years, such exposed land was restored by llamas (美洲驼), whose activity enriched the soil and promoted plant growth. By the foot of Peru’s melting Uruashraju glacier, researchers partnered with local farmers to farm llamas on four specific plots. For three days a month from 2019 to 2022, the llamas grazed (吃青草) the plots, fertilizing them with waste and spreading seeds from droppings.
As is the case worldwide, glaciers are disappearing in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca mountains at an alarming rate. And as the ice melts, nearby ecosystems wither: They lose access to summertime supplies of freshwater and sometimes encounter harmful acidic minerals in rocks once covered by the glaciers.
Llamas may help counter some of these effects. Their transformation of the land, as seen in the new study, could reduce rock weathering and help the soil hold onto more dampness, thus limiting the acidic runoff that can poison farmers’ crops. Such pollution is one reason why local farmers partnered with the researchers. The animals’ behavior could one day even generate new grasslands as soil quality improves.
The idea that animal grazing may positively impact a landscape is not new. Nor is rewilding, the push to bring key species back to their native ecosystems, unique to the Cordillera Blanca mountains. In Finland, for example, the Indigenous Sami are working to reintroduce reindeer in deforested land, potentially restoring it. But the size and speed of the changes the llamas helped bring about surprised the researchers. From 2021 to 2022, the average amount of plant cover in the llama plots grew from about 9 percent to nearly 14 percent—faster than it did in four control plots. The research underscores the valuable roles animals play in shaping landscapes, says ecologist Kelsey Reider of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., “The animals themselves are doing a lot.”
12、What did the new study find
A. Llamas could help improve ecology. B. Llamas needed to be exposed to soil.
C. Llamas might survive poor situation. D. Llamas were able to stop ice melting.

B. Because they profited from the research.
C. Because they wanted to keep llamas away.
D. Because they failed to know llamas’ behavior.
15、What can we know from the last paragraph
A. Llamas restore the forest in Finland. B. Wildlife helps a lot in restoring nature.

Over the past four decades, more than 450 butterfly species have been hit by the falling numbers. In the US alone, the number of monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶) has seen a drop of 80%, from scientists recording millions of them in the 1980s, and only 29,000 in 2020. It’s part of a wider possibility across the insect group. In 2017, scientists in Germany raised alarm bells after finding that insects had fallen by more than 70% in 30 years.
For farmers, monarch butterflies pollinate (授粉) a very large percentage of food crops. It is very important t protect them because their disappearance could have a huge economic influence. Butterflies are also helpful in the coal mine for other insects, as it is easier for them to feel the environmental change. and relatively easy to record.
Leading environmental organizations have been working hard to find new ways of recording the number of butterflies. As of now, there is no long-term data to develop good protection methods. The scientists wanted to address the challenge that long term recording programs worldwide have faced: they are focusing on training locals as insect experts, which requires much money. They came up with a new method to the problem. In Yasuni National Park, they hired park rangers (护林员) who were trained and then carried out recording. The rangers were able to recognize butterflies with an 85% success rate, which is important for these kinds of recording programs to be successful.
Compared with other recording projects, this study represents a long-term solution. “Our method increases the chance of recording in the long term by reducing the money spent on it such as wages,” said lead author Maria Checa. “Furthermore, it also offers opportunities for public organizations to achieve their environmental goals.”
16、How does the author develop the first paragraph
A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers.
C. By showing possible results. D. By discussing different reasons.
17、How are butterflies different from other insects in feeling the environmental change

A. Uncaring. B. Disapproving. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
Face book has published its mind-reading wrist device and an augmented reality (增强现实) keyboard with future hardware products. The company’s Facebook Reality Labs division showed off the technologies on a virtual call with members of the media. Executives from the division talked about the technologies while videos of the projects were played for audience.
The wrist device is capable of reading neurological (神经系统的) signals sent from aw’s brain down to his or her hand. It could read these signals to get a sense of what a user wants to do and copy the action in a virtual or augmented reality environment. “You actually have more of your brain dedicated to controlling your wrist than any other part of your body.” said TR Reardon, director of research science at Facebook Reality Labs.
The Facebook researchers demonstrated “force” actions where a user could use his or her fingers in real life to hold and control virtual, far-away objects in augmented reality. The name of the action is a reference to Star Wars where certain characters can use “force” to control and move people or objects that are far away from them.
Additionally, the company demonstrated electromyography wristbands (机电腕带) that users could wear to type on any surface as though they were typing on a physical keyboard. Although there is no keyboard, the wristbands would register the intention of a user’s finger stroke (挥笔动作) and note down the letters and words. .
Facebook’s development of these technologies comes as the company prepares to release its first smart glasses this year. That device will be Ray-Ban glasses. Unlike smartphones, which rely on touchscreens, there is no current obvious input mechanism for smart glasses.
Asked how soon these technologies may make their way to the public, Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer said they are in the early stages of development and no doubt will bring much convenience to our future life.

22、What’s Mike Schroepfer’s attitude to the future of these technologies
A. Tolerant B. Critical C. Hopeful D. Indifferent
23、Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Facebook and Its Goal B. Facebook, a Tech-company
C. Facebook and Its Development D. Facebook’s New Technologies
A shaking head, new heart colours and a familiar goose are among a new group of emojis (表情符号) set to be released (发布) this year.
Unicode Consortiumlist contains only 31 new emojis, much smaller than last year’s 112 emojis, which included pregnant people and a low battery sign. The goose emoji has drawn comparisons to the hit game Untitled Goose Game, where players take control of a horrible goose. The release has gained a mostly positive response online.
The chosen emojis are selected by Unicode Consortium, a non-profit organization in California. Keith Broni, editor in chief of Emojipedia, said “The Unicode emoji subcommittee want to take more time to consider what symbols we can add to represent what we know or experiences we have had — things like a shaking face or the pink hearts.”
He mentioned people were excited to see the pink heart emoji finally included, but he was particularly interested in the use of the shaking head. “It is most likely to be used when we are mentally or physically shook,” he said, “But there is a lot behind this - how can we communicate what happens to a person when they’re undergoing an earthquake
He added that their designer probably took a healthy inspiration“ from the goose video game for the relevant emoji - but it has meaning beyond that. “In the case of the goose, the concept (概念) goes back to how we use language in an expressive way.” He said, “What other things can we say with these emojis How can we forget the English idiom’ silly goose5 ” Through the emoji, that English language idiom becomes a piece of knowledge that can be represented across cultures.;

Lead is highly poisonous, even at tiny concentrations, especially affecting children as they grow.(水中的铅和其他重金属是一个严重的全球性问题,而且还在继续恶化。 故选A项。
10、答案:D
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中“A process called biosorption, in which inactive biological material is used to remove heavy metals from water, has been known for a few decades. But the process has been studied and characterized only at much higher concentrations, at the levels of more than one part per million.(几十年前,人们就已经知道了一种叫做生物吸附的过程,即使用非活性生物材料去除水中的重金属。但这一过程只有在高浓度,即百万分之一以上的浓度下才被研究和描述过)”可知,生物吸附的过程是用非活性生物材料去除水中高浓度的重金属。故选D项。
