A Successful Cleanup Activity
Last weekend, a volunteer activity, aimed at cleaning up the river nearby, was organized for senior 2 students of our school.
Early in the morning, we, accompanied by our teachers, arrived at the river with garbage bags in hand. For several hours, we worked in groups, collecting bottles, cans, plastic bags and other garbage along the riverbanks. With our hard work, the river soon returned to its former cleanliness.
The activity did great benefit to us. Not only did we contribute to the beautification of the local community, we also gained valuable team-working skills and developed a sense of responsibility towards our environment.

On the day of the trip, Matt realized his mum was telling the truth. He started losing his temper in the middle of the airport. He complained ten hours of flying in a small economy seat would be very uncomfortable. His mother replied that he could have used the money he earned from his part time job to upgrade. Matt was speechless and had to accept the decision. But to Matt’s surprise. May asked the flight attendant to switch her and Matt’s seats before the plane took off. Matt got to sit in first class as he wished. but he was ashamed.
Still feeling ashamed after the trip, the young man knew he had to change. He realized all his former comfortable life had been due to his parents and hard-working May. He should no longer take what others did for granted. From then on, he cut down his own daily expenses and focused on his school assignments. He even donated some of his expensive clothes and shoes to students in poor areas. Seeing Matt’s changes after that trip, his parents felt happy and relieved.高二英语阶段性检测 2024.01

For the past 15 years, Denise has taught at a community school where students
face significant economic and language challenges. In 2016, Denise met Dr. Jane
Goodall at an event in the Bronx. Like Dr. Jane, Denise, who has a background in
forestry, is always connected with nature and animals. Soon after, she started a
Roots &Shoots program at her school. “I love to inspire that same connection in my
students,” said Denise.
To kick off their project, Denise introduced her group (19 first graders and 8
fifth-graders) to community mapping. “Where do you live What's the name of
your county What's the name of your state ” she asked. “So it starts in your own
backyard,” she explains, “and it progresses across the street to the park, where you
see urban wildlife, and finally you start to look at the bigger picture.” Students then
observed homeless cats outside their school, and together, they took action to return
them to where they were found.
The students led the entire project. “I was just a guide," says Denise. “But
that's the point: They are going to love science and animals. They know they are the
future and that they are the people who are the keepers of this planet.” She also
notes that students come to understand what positive choices can have: They
discover their own strengths and even weaknesses. They identify partners' efforts
and they form friendships and bonds.
But ultimately, says Denise, “my goal was to try to teach compassion, namely
sympathy. "That's the biggest payoff she tries to convey to her students. For other
educators with a willing heart, she offers a few words of advice: Get students
outside—even just to walk around the school grounds, guide them to build trust and
put themselves in other's shoes, and never give up!
24.What does the underlined phrase “that same connection” probably refer to
A. Love for nature and animals. B. Desire for a higher social status.
C. Denise and Goodall's relationship. D. Courage to explore the unknown.
25.Which of the following might Denise agree with

D. Every kid should know their own county.
26.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. Ways to brave hardships in life. B. The project's impact on students.
C. Links between human and nature. D. Challenges to face in the future.
27.What does Denise most highlight in teaching
A. Being sympathetic. B. Remaining responsible.
C. Staying determined. D. Keeping sharp-minded.

In habitats across the planet, animals periodically drop everything to walk, fly
or swim to a new place. Wildlife such as whales and geese learn migration paths by
following their parents. Others, including small songbirds, gain the distance and
direction of their migration within their genetic code. And some animals use a
combination of genetics and culture to guide their migration.
Another group of migrators does not quite fit either model, and researchers
have only recently started to figure out how they find their way. Take the Cory’s
shearwater, an oceangoing sea bird that migrates over the Atlantic every year. The
young do not migrate with their parents, so culture cannot explain their journeys.
And the exact paths vary wildly from individual to individual, making genetics
equally unlikely.
Cory’s shearwaters are long-lived, rarely producing young successfully before
age nine. This leaves an opening for learning and practice to develop their migration
patterns. Researchers call this the “exploration-refinement”, and until now it has
been hypothetical (假设的) because of difficulties in tracking migratory animals’
movements.
But a team of researchers has done that by attaching small geolocators to more
than 150 of the birds aged four to nine. They found that younger birds traveled
longer distances, for longer periods, and had more diverse paths than older birds.
“We finally have evidence of the ‘exploration-refinement’ for migratory birds,” says
Letizia Campioni, who led the study. Younger Cory’s shearwaters are able to fly just

as fast as the adults— but they do not, suggesting that the young do more exploring,
which gradually fades as they mature and settle into a preferred course.
Although it may seem less efficient than other strategies, “exploration
refinement could be beneficial to birds and other organisms in a rapidly changing
world due to unpredictable man-made changes,” says Barbara Frei. “It might be
safer to repeat a behavior that was recently successful than to rely on patterns that
were perfected long ago but might no longer be safe.”
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. It describes animals’ habitats. B. It talks about migration models.
C. It compares different species. D. It introduces a tracking technology.
29. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The opening for learning and practice.
B. The unique living habit of Cory’s shearwaters.
C. The way Cory’s shearwaters form their migration patterns.
D. The process scientists track Cory’s shearwaters’ movements.
30. What does Letizia’s study find about the younger Cory’s shearwaters
A. They travel as much as adult birds.
B. They move in a predictable manner.
C. They lower the speed for exploration.
D. They look for a course with their parents.
31. What can we conclude from the last paragraph
A. Man-made changes make migration easier.
B. Animals make a safer journey via a fixed track.
C. A combination of strategies assures migration success.
D. Course exploration contributes to birds’ adaptability.

Fathers can give their children an educational advantage at primary school by
reading, drawing and playing with them, according to a newly published report.
Research led by the University of Leeds has found that children do better at
primary school if their fathers regularly spend time with them on interactive
engagement activities like reading, playing, telling stories, drawing and singing.
Analysing primary school test scores for five- and seven-year-olds, the

researchers used a representative sample of nearly 5,000 mother-father households
in England from the Millenium Cohort Study.
According to the research, dads who regularly drew, played and read with their
three-year-olds helped their children do better at school by age five. Dads being
involved at age five also helped improve scores in seven-year-olds’ Key Stage
Assessments.
Dr Helen Norman, who led the research, said, “Mothers still tend to assume the
primary care r role and therefore tend to do the most childcare, but if fathers
enthusiastically engage in childcare too, it significantly increases the likelihood of
children getting better grades in primary school. This is why encouraging and
supporting fathers to share childcare with the mother, from an early stage in the
child's life, is critical.”
Dads’ involvement impacted positively on their children’s school achievement
regardless of the child's gender(性别), race, age in the school year and household
income, according to the report.
There were different effects when mums and dads took part in the same
activities—the data showed that mums had more of an impact on young children's
emotional and social behaviors than educational achievement.
The researchers recommend that dads carve out as much time as they can to
engage in interactive activities with their children each week. For busy, working
dads, even just ten minutes a day could potentially have educational benefits. They
also recommend that schools and early years education providers routinely take
both parents’ contact details (where possible) and develop strategies to engage
fathers.
32. What can we learn about the research
A. Mums had more impact on young children's educational achievement.
B. Dads’ positive impact on kids learning had nothing to do with the gender.
C. Dads’ involvement at age 3 helped promote academic performance at age 7.
D. The researchers investigated nearly 5,000 single parent families in England.
33. Who may give his children the most educational advantage at primary school
A. A father who is totally busy with his work.
B. A father who is really good at playing basketball.

C. A father who has absolutely low household income.

34. What advice do the researchers offer on children's early years education
A. Dads should spare ten minutes a day to apparently benefit kids.
B. Dads should maximize time to interact with their kids each week.
C. Schools should generate strategies to involve parents in management.
D. Schools should regularly contact parents to develop mother-engagement.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. It's crucial that fathers can have a lasting impact on children.
B. Young children can get brilliant childhood with father-engagement.
C. Fathers and mothers should share childcare in family early education.
D. Young children do better at school if their dads read and play with them.

Have you ever heard someone say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the
day”, or give you advice about why it’s vital to start the day with a healthy
breakfast 36 Is it really that important In a sense, it really matters.
Energy restoration
The word “breakfast” comes from “breaking the fast” — the idea of ending the
period in which we didn’t eat during the night. The regeneration process that takes
place while we sleep consumes some of our natural food reserves to heal our bodies.
37 So, in that way, a healthy breakfast makes sense.
Weight management
There are also many often-quoted studies which seem to link a state of obesity
with skipping breakfast. 38 In a US study, 50,000 people were monitored
over seven years, and those who ate a healthy breakfast were found to have a lower
BMI, which seems to suggest that breakfast may indeed help people maintain a
healthy weight.
Better brain function
39 Breakfast is also associated with improved brain function,
including concentration and language. A review of 54 studies found that eating

breakfast can improve memory, though the effects on other brain functions were
inconclusive. However, one of the researchers says there is reasonable evidence that
breakfast does improve concentration.
What’s most important is what we eat for breakfast. High-protein breakfasts
have been found particularly effective in reducing food cravings and consumption
later in the day. However, studies found that there is no agreement on what type of
breakfast is healthier. 40
A. Breakfast helps us refill the exhausted stores.
B. Weight-loss is likely to cause them health problems.
C. Breakfast has been found to affect more than just weight.
D. Breakfast types don’t matter as much as simply eating something.
E. Thus, it is suggested that a healthy breakfast can regulate and lose weight.
F. Many people are recommended to manage their weight by skipping meals.
G. It seems that this feast, for many of us, is necessary for our day to start well.

A couple worked hard to provide for their family well, but their wealth came at
the expense of their time. They hired a woman called May to help raise their three
children. Their first son, Matt, was now 18, and they had two other children who
were 8 and 5 years old. When they had Matt, they weren’t financially wealthy.
However, by the time Matt turned 9, it slowly improved.

When Matt was 11, they decided to send him to a private school since they
could afford it. Changing the school environment brought about a sudden
personality change for Matt, and his parents believed it was because putting him in
a class of wealthy teenagers made him feel superior(有优越感的).
Through the years, the concerned parents tried to change this side of Matt.
When he was16, the parents made him take a part-time job to start taking financial
responsibility seriously. At first, the parents thought it worked. However, after some
time, the boy’s parents realized he hadn’t changed.
One day, the couple planned to go on vacation. Instead of leaving May at home,
they decided to take her with them and bought her a first-class ticket. While they
were planning the vacation, Matt overheard them talking. He felt his parents’
paying for May’s first-class seat was unnecessary because their family had already
paid for her.
The mom was shocked. She said it was mean for him to say that, especially
after everything May did for them. She added how grateful she was for May’s help,
as she gave up time for her own child to raise hers—Matt included. Still, Matt
continued to argue his point. The mom grew tired of his selfishness and said he’d be
the one in an economy seat and had to pay for an upgrade to first class if he wanted
one. The boy nodded, thinking it was a joke.
