If you ask 100 people what subjects they wish they had been taught in school, there is a chance that the vast majority of them will complain about the lack of personal finance education. In my case, I did learn a bit about financing while in school — just not in the classroom. One of my earliest lessons on the basics of budgeting came from an unlikely source: the cafeteria.
My lunch budget was a set amount each week. Without a plan, it would be all too easy to blow through the budget long before meeting all expenses. Therefore, my very first budgeting lesson was to make a budget well. A bit of simple arithmetic (算术) helped me determine exactly how much money I could spend each day if I wanted to actually have lunch all week.
Besides, my school had relatively diverse lunch offerings. You could not only get the common hot school lunch but also find many other foods of varying attractions. As far as I was concerned, what attracted me most was the ice cream. Unfortunately, I couldn’t blow my daily lunch budget on ice cream. And I’d already figured out that splurging early in the week made for a rough time for the rest of the week. Hence, I learned my second important budgeting lesson: save for a goal. Because of this lesson, when Friday rolled around, I would have just enough left over for a wonderful lunch and the highly desirable ice cream.
Nowadays, my budget is a bit more complicated than the lunch budget in the past. Although I no longer have to save my pennies for a frozen treat, budgeting my money today uses the exact same skills I learned all those years ago. Actually, whether you’re budgeting for school lunches or credit card bills, the basics remain the same. And it’s never too early — or too late — to learn how to make a proper budget.
4. What can we learn about the author while she was in school
A. She showed no interest in financial affairs.
B. She often complained about her school subjects.
C. She learned about financing from her own experience.
D. She eagerly expected to get personal finance education.
5. What did the author probably realize after eating at the cafeteria
A. She should plan her lunch budget carefully.
B. Her health mattered more than anything else.
C. Her budget for lunch was far from reasonable.
D. She should improve her arithmetic as much as possible.
6. What does the underlined word “splurging” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Trying to save money. B. Making a plan for money.
C. Spending much money freely. D. Being concerned about money.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To introduce some lessons about making a budget.
B. To encourage people to learn some budgeting skills.
C. To stress the significance of saving money in our life.
D. To remind people to pay attention to their lunch budget.
C 5. A 6. C 7. B

C
Most people automatically take a high-pitched (声调高的), sing-song tone (语气) when speaking to animals and human babies. Although previous research has suggested that such” baby talk” is more likely to grab dogs’ attention, less was known about how cats react to being spoken to in this way.
To investigate, Charlotte de Mouzon and her team members observed how16 cats responded to hearing pre-recorded sentences spoken by their owner or a stranger, by recording changes in their behaviour, such as moving their ears or tails, suddenly stopping what they were doing, or their pupils getting bigger any of which could indicate that a sound had caught their attention.
They found that the cats were largely unresponsive to hearing a stranger’s voice calling their name, but when their owner did it, 10 of the 16 cats displayed a series of behaviours suggesting increased attentiveness. Cats also showed more signs of interest when they heard their owner speaking sentences in a tone usually used to address their cat - but not when a stranger used this tone, or when their owner spoke the same sentence as if addressing a fellow adult human
“For a long time it has been thought that cats are very independent animals, only interested in humans for food and shelter (庇护).” de Mouzon said. “But our research supports the idea that they are attached. It brings further evidence to encourage humans to consider cats as sensitive and communicative individuals,” she added. “The fact that, in return, cats show a greater reaction when their humans specifically address them brings a new dimension to previous considerations of this reciprocal (相互的) relationship.”
Given these findings, de Mouzon said cat owners shouldn’t feel embarrassed (不好意思的) about the way they speak to their pets. “I also talk to my two cats as if they were children - and they do respond, she said.” People may be shy about admitting this, but I think it can help to strengthen the bond between cats and their owners. They get that we are giving them attention.”
8. How did de Mouzon’s team carry out their study
A. By recording the sounds that caught cats’ attention.
B. By analyzing the causes of cats’ behavioural change.
C. By watching the reaction of cats to different recordings.
D. By studying the interaction between cats and their owners.
9. What can be learned about most cats in the study
A. They liked hearing people calling their name
B. They were able to tell their owner’s voice from a stranger’s.
C. They had a greater reaction when their owner talked to other cats.
D. They showed more interest when a stranger imitated their owner’s tone.
10. What do de Mouzon’s words in paragraph 4 indicate
A. Cats aren’t as independent as believed. B. Cats aren’t eager to please their owners.
C. Cats see their owners as a food provider. D. Cats are sensitive to changes of environment.
11. What did de Mouzon encourage cat owners to do
A. Treat their cats like their children. B. Give more attention to their cats
C. Admit that they are a cat person. D. Talk to their cats using baby talk.
C 9. B 10. D 11. B

根据文章第二段“To investigate, Charlotte de Mouzon and her team members observed how16 cats responded to hearing pre-recorded sentences spoken by their owner or a stranger, by recording changes in their behaviour, such as moving their ears or tails, suddenly stopping what they were doing, or their pupils getting bigger any of which could indicate that a sound had caught their attention.(为了进行调查,Charlotte de Mouzon和她的团队成员观察了16只猫在听到主人或陌生人说的预先录制好的句子时的反应,通过记录它们的行为变化,比如移动耳朵或尾巴,突然停止正在做的事情,或者瞳孔变大——任何一种都可能表明某个声音引起了它们的注意。)”
根据文章第三段“They found that the cats were largely unresponsive to hearing a stranger’s voice calling their name, but when their owner did it, 10 of the 16 cats displayed a series of behaviours suggesting increased attentiveness.(他们发现,这些猫对听到陌生人叫它们名字的声音基本没有反应,但当它们的主人叫它们名字时,16只猫中有10只表现出了一系列表明注意力增加的行为。)”
根据文章第四段““But our research supports the idea that they are attached. It brings further evidence to encourage humans to consider cats as sensitive and communicative individuals,” she added. “The fact that, in return, cats show a greater reaction when their humans specifically address them brings a new dimension to previous considerations of this reciprocal (相互的) relationship.”(“但我们的研究支持了这一观点,即它们是相互依赖的。它提供了进一步的证据,鼓励人类将猫视为敏感和健谈的个体,”她补充说。“作为回报,当人类专门对猫说话时,猫会表现出更大的反应,这一事实为之前对这种互惠关系的考虑带来了新的维度。”)”可知,de Mouzon的话表明猫对环境的变化很敏感。故选D。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Given these findings, de Mouzon said cat owners shouldn’t feel embarrassed (不好意思的) about the way they speak to their pets. “I also talk to my two cats as if they were children - and they do respond, she said.” People may be shy about admitting this, but I think it can help to strengthen the bond between cats and their owners. They get that we are giving them attention.”(鉴于这些发现,de Mouzon说,猫主人不应该为自己对宠物说话的方式感到尴尬。

Changing the wording about expiration dates (有效期) on perishable (容易腐坏的) food items could help reduce food waste, according to a new study. “With very few exceptions, the date labels (标签) that are used in the United States are not standardized,” said Brad Rickard, a researcher working on this study. “And they’re not food safety dates; they’re just food quality dates.”
In a survey of consumers, the researchers asked participants to rate, on a 1-5 scale (5 being extremely likely), their likelihood of discarding (丢弃) 15 different food items that were one day past the stated date code (代码) in the first section of the survey, the question included only the expiration date code; the second section repeated this exercise but with both a date code and a date label that included one of 10 different wording variations.
Four of the date label variations followed those that have been widely adopted in the U.S.: “Best if used by”; “Best by”; “Use by”; and “Sell by”. The other six featured a date label and a biosensor, an indication of food quality. Biosensors which detect microorganism growth and change colors accordingly — are popular in some European markets, but are not as common in the U.S.; for the survey, the researchers chose biosensors with the colors green (fresh), blue (less fresh) and purple (past fresh).
Survey results showed an increase in discard intentions with the “Use by” and the “Best if used by date label, implying that foods with these date labels were more often discarded and replaced. Rickard also said the innovation of the biosensor technology impressed the U.S. survey participants, and when it was presented to participants as green, it led to significantly lower discard rates.
One of the unintended consequences of a more uniform approach to date labels, the researchers note, is a potential increase in food waste depending on the wording of the label, as well as an increase in the re-purchasing of perishable items high in protein, fat and cholesterol (胆道醇). “If you tell all food companies to change all their ‘best by’ dates to ‘best if used by’ dates, that might actually increase food waste,” Rickard said.
12. What can be learned about food date labels used in the U.S.
A. They are subject to uniform standards.
B. They are designed to reduce food waste.
C. They suggest the freshness level of a food item.
D. They indicate whether a food item is safe to consume.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly explain about the research
A. Its significance. B. Its finding C. Its goal. D. Its method.
14. Which of the following best describes the biosensors used in the survey
A. They sent a message to consumers when food changed color.
B. They were able to detect the expiration date of food accurately.
C. They helped participants decide whether to throw a food item away.
D. They were used to differentiate European and American markets.
15. What might happen after a more uniform labeling system is used
A. Food companies changing their food packaging. B. Higher sales of some perishable food.
C. Customers choosing healthier food. D. A decrease in food waste.
C 13. D 14. A 15. B
根据文章第一段““With very few exceptions, the date labels (标签) that are used in the United States are not standardized,” said Brad Rickard, a researcher working on this study. “And they’re not food safety dates; they’re just food quality dates.”(参与该研究的研究员Brad Rickard表示:“除了极少数例外,美国使用的日期标签并不统一。它们不是食品安全日期,而只是食品质量日期。”)”可知,美国使用的食品日期标签没有统一的标准,不是食品安全日期,而只是食品质量日期。故选C。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第二段“In a survey of consumers, the researchers asked participants to rate, on a 1-5 scale (5 being extremely likely), their likelihood of discarding (丢弃) 15 different food items that were one day past the stated date code (代码) in the first section of the survey, the question included only the expiration date code; the second section repeated this exercise but with both a date code and a date label that included one of 10 different wording variations.(在一项针对消费者的调查中,研究人员要求参与者按照1-5的等级(5表示极有可能)对15种不同的食品进行评分,这些食品在调查的第一部分中已经超过了规定的日期代码,问题只包括过期日期代码;第二部分重复了这个练习,但使用了日期代码和日期标签,其中包括10种不同的措辞变化之一。)”
根据文章第三段“Biosensors which detect microorganism growth and change colors accordingly — are popular in some European markets, but are not as common in the U.S.; for the survey, the researchers chose biosensors with the colors green (fresh), blue (less fresh) and purple (past fresh).(生物传感器可以检测微生物的生长并相应地改变颜色,在一些欧洲市场很受欢迎,但在美国并不常见;在这项调查中,研究人员选择了绿色(新鲜)、蓝色(不太新鲜)和紫色(过去新鲜)的生物传感器。)”以及第四段“Survey results showed an increase in discard intentions with the “Use by” and the “Best if used by date label, implying that foods with these date labels were more often discarded and replaced. Rickard also said the innovation of the biosensor technology impressed the U.S. survey participants, and when it was presented to participants as green, it led to significantly lower discard rates.(调查结果显示,带有“截止日期使用”和“截止日期使用最佳”标签的食品的丢弃意图有所增加,这意味着带有这些日期标签的食品更经常被丢弃和更换。Rickard还说,生物传感器技术的创新给美国调查参与者留下了深刻的印象,当它以绿色的形式展示给参与者时,它大大降低了丢弃率。)”可推断出,生物传感器可以检测微生物的生长并相应地改变颜色,所以当生物传感器颜色发生变化时,它是在向消费者传递食物新鲜度的信息。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“One of the unintended consequences of a more uniform approach to date labels, the researchers note, is a potential increase in food waste depending on the wording of the label, as well as an increase in the re-purchasing of perishable items high in protein, fat and cholesterol (胆道醇).(研究人员指出,对日期标签采用更统一的方法会产生一个意想不到的后果,那就是根据标签的措辞可能会增加食物浪费,同时也会增加重新购买富含蛋白质、脂肪和胆道醇的易腐食品的次数。)”

In this situation, if you see a patient with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征) in trouble, are you willing to help him
Last week, I took an early flight to Paris, and it was during this flight that I experienced a lifelong and touching experience.
When it was announced on the broadcast that the plane was about to land and passengers were required to prepare, a teenage boy with Down syndrome who was traveling with his family had become upset and would not return to his seat. In spite of the cabin crew’s warnings over the loudspeaker that it was almost time to land, the boy completely disregarded all this and still went his own way. in terms of such a situation, the pilot was forced to circle above the airport temporarily, delaying the landing and angering people on the already tense flight.
Though the boy’s parents and adult brothers and sisters tried to persuade him to get off the floor and back into his seat, he was opposed to their advice resolutely. They seemed to be in despair.
Finally, the crew sought professional assistance from the passengers. Although I am a doctor. I was helpless in that situation. Subsequently, Murphy, 42-who had been a teacher for about 20 years-glanced at the boy, stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane.

D

I am a doctor and often attend important academic conferences around the world, but I’m scared to fly in an airplane. As is known to all, traveling on an airplane can be a very tiring task even in the best of circumstances. Especially when the plane arrives above the destination and encounters some special reasons that prevent it from landing safely, the feeling cannot be described in words.
She found the boy in the passage between rows of seats, lying on his belly. So she also lay down on her stomach to face him. She began chatting calmly with him, asking his name, his favorite books and his favorite characters.
