Chinese writer Can Xue, along with Japanese author Haruki Murakami, was reportedly named as the fourth-ranked candidate(候选人)to have the highest chance of winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2019.
Can, whose real name is Deng Xiaohua, was born in Changsha, Hunan in 1953. Not raised as a writer, she spent almost 20 years while being a worker, tailor and medical practitioner (从业者).Yet she never gave up on her passion, and in 1985 published her first novel Yellow Mud Street. Like her other works, it made use of symbolism. The book became known as the autobiography of her inner world. Such a work was not easily accepted or understood by Chinese readers during that period. But Can never stopped pursuing her own style.
Other representative works include Old Floating Cloud and The Barefoot Doctor. Some have been translated in other languages, while others have been selected as textbooks at world-class universities in the US and Japan. Her novel The Last Lover has been honored with the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in US, widely considered a prelude award for the Nobel.
Sharing a stylistic similarity with Franz Kafka, Can has been called the "Chinese Kafka" by permanent Nobel Literature Committee judge and renowned sinologist Goran Malmqvist. Malmqvist even believed Can could achieve more than Kafka, as she has already created more than 7 million words of literary composition.
Can responded she was unworthy of that level of praise, and she is just standing on Kafka's shoulders.
Though not understood by many Chinese, Can still writes in a way that combines Western and Chinese culture. But Can said many Western readers thought her works novel enough, as she praised the virtues of introducing Chinese culture to the West.

The language Centers first Trivia Night tested students' knowledge on different languages and their histories last Friday at Douglass commons.
"We have decided to conduct this event when the weather is bad so that students who have nowhere to go and stay on campus can come and find a comfortable shelter during a cold winter day," Language Center Director, Teresa Valdez said. According to Valdez, the idea for Trivia night came a year ago from a junior and team-member called Elizabeth de Los Reyes. The event engaged students' interest in languages and showed the high-quality services that the Language Center provides.
Participants competed in small groups that each represented a different language and country. There were five teams in total: Russia, China, Japan, Spain and France. The competition consisted of four rounds with each round consisting of three questions relating to the following topics literature, language, geography, culture and history.
After a few warm-up questions about how people greet each other in different languages, what continent Turkey is found in, and who is the first man to fly to the moon, the questions became increasingly difficult. Each round offered an increasing amount of points a team could receive. The final question was worth 20 points. If a team did not answer it correctly, the points were taken from the total.
In the meantime, students enjoyed pizza, snacks, and drinks while sharing their linguistic (语言的) interest. Most of the participants knew two or three languages. Others knew more, such as first-year Bartek Jezierski from Poland, who can speak English, Polish, German, Spanish, and Russian.
The winners from first to third place were France, Japan and Russia respectively. All five teams were given some prizes—a blue shopping bag, a cup and stuffed toys. However, students believed the most important prize of the evening was the process of the competition—how students from diverse backgrounds and cultures were able to participate in a friendly competition, and shared their mutual (相互的) love of languages.
8. What is one of the purposes of Trivia Night?
A. To attract students to learn languages.
B. To help the students suffering from coldness.
C. To collect opinions from the students on its services.
D. To select the best students for the Language center.
9. How many questions were there in the competition in total?

10. Which of the following can best describe the atmosphere of the competition?
A. Quiet. B. Relaxing. C. romantic. D. Depressing.

The endangered pandas in Qinling Mountains might face a new threat (威胁): the loss of their food, bamboo, which makes up 99% of their meals.
Adult pandas spend most part of the day eating bamboo and have to take in at least 40 pounds a day to stay healthy. However, a new study published in Nature and Climate Change warned that they may soon find their food gone because most of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains might disappear by the end of the century as a result of rising temperature worldwide.
A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has studied the effects of climate change on the bamboo in Qinling Mountains. They have found that bamboo is very sensitive to climate changes. “80% to 100% of the bamboo would be gone if the average temperature increases 3.5 degrees worldwide by the end of the century.” said Liu Jianguo, one of the report’s authors.
He added, “This is how much the temperature would rise by 2100 even if all countries will keep their promises in the Paris Agreement. But you know what is happening around the world.”
In recent years, China has been trying its best to protect the endangered pandas by setting up more and bigger natural reserves.
“But it is far from being enough and the endangered pandas need cooperation from the rest of the world, because their future is not just in the hands of the Chinese,” said Shirley Martin from World Wildlife Fund but not a member of the team.
The Qinling Mountains, in the southwest of China, are home to about 260 pandas. That is about 13% of the China’s wild panda population. In addition, about 375 are living in research centers and zoos in China.
12. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Lots of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains will probably disappear.
B. Qinling Mountains cannot provide enough bamboo for the pandas.
C. Pandas in Qinling Mountains are just threatened by the loss of food.
D. Pandas have already eaten 99% of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains.
13. What does Liu Jianguo mean
A. China needs more help from World Wildlife Fund.
B. Bamboo is sensitive to the changes of temperature.
C China is making great efforts to protect the pandas.
D. It is difficult to control the temperature rise within 3.5℃.
14. How many wild pandas are there in China
A. About 260. B. About 635.
C. About 2,000. D. About 2,635.
15. Which can be the best title for the text

A friend of mine, named Jack, received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Jack came out of his office, a street urchin(顽童) was walking around the shining car.“Is this your car, sir ” he asked. Jack answered, “Yes,my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised.“You mean your brother gave it to you and it cost you nothing Sir, I wish...”He hesitated(犹豫).Jack thought of course he knew what the boy wanted, but what the boy said surprised him greatly. “I wish,” the boy went on,“that I could be a brother like that.” Jack looked at the boy in surprise, and then he said again,“Would you like to take a ride in my car ” “Oh yes, I’d love to.” the boy answered.
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Sir, would you mind driving in front of my house”
Jack smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Jack was wrong again.“Will you stop where those two steps are ” the boy asked.

Paragraph 2:
Jack got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He got out and ran up to the steps. After a while, the boy pushed a wheelchair with a younger boy sitting in it. It’s clear that the younger boy was his brother, who was unable to walk. As his brother saw the car, his eyes were shining.
“The car belongs to this gentleman. One day, I will give you a car too.” The boy said to his brother. Jack stood there, stunned. It dawned on him that he was totally wrong.“Could you please take us for a drive together My younger brother loves cars very much.” The boy said. Without any hesitation, Jack agreed.
Jack got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. Although they followed a normal route, the little boy was in high spirits as if he found himself in heaven. But to his surprise, the boy didn’t enjoy the view. He only focused attention on his brother. Deeply moved, Jack realized the best Christmas present was the concern from the bottom of the brother’s heart rather than a car. Jack told them it was Christmas Eve, so this was a gift for them.
He got out and ran up to the steps.( 他下了车,跑上台阶。) Jack got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car.( 杰克下了车,把男孩抱到汽车的前座上。)
1.高级词汇:belong to; dawn on sb. ; without any hesitation; be in high spirits; to one’s surprise; focus on
It’s clear that the younger boy was his brother, who was unable to walk.
As his brother saw the car,his eyes were shining.(as引导的时间状语从句)
Although they followed a normal route, the little boy was in high spirits as if he found himself in heaven.(although
Deeply moved, Jack realized the best Christmas present was the concern from the bottom of the brother’s heart rather than a car.(deeply moved

4. When did Can Xue publish her first novel

A. 3 B. 4. C. 12. D. 20.
10. Which of the following can best describe the atmosphere of the competition?
A. Quiet. B. Relaxing. C. romantic. D. Depressing.
11. What did students value most in the competition?
A. Some snacks and drinks.
B. Various prizes for winners.
C. The course of the competition.
D. The services provided by the language center.

C. China is making great efforts to protect the pandas.
D. It is difficult to control the temperature rise within 3.5℃.
14. How many wild pandas are there in China
A. About 260. B. About 635.
C. About 2,000. D. About 2,635.
15. Which can be the best title for the text
A. The Disappearance of Bamboo B. Necessity to Change Pandas’ Food
C. Efforts Made to Save Pandas D. A New Threat Faced by the Pandas
