And I think the British are quiet and gentle. I love the lifestyle there. Going out for afternoon tea was fun, and I always did that with my friends. And I really love the old buildings. We don’t have anything that old in the United States, so it is pretty amazing! By the way, I also went to Australia once. The buildings there aren’t so attractive either. Chen Guanghui is a guardian for black-necked cranes(黑颈鹤) in the Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve of Zhaotong city, in southwest China’s YunnanProvince. Whistling(吹口哨) is the secret language Chen uses to communicate with the black-necked cranes, a type of migratory bird under first class protection in China. She says different whistles signal different things. When she whistles in an increasing tone, she tries to tell the cranes: ask your companions to come back for lunch, and they would chirp(吱喳叫)to spread the message right away.
Living near the Dashanbao Nature Reserve, a major winter habitat(栖息地) for the rare species, Chen started to take care of them in 2003, a mission she took over from her mother, whose devotion dates back to the 1990s.
“In the first few days, I remembered they ran away as soon as I approached them. I was very upset and asked my mom to come back, and I was worried they would starve,” says Chen. “I initially tried everything, even singing folk songs to attract them, but failed. Later, I used special whistles and gradually formed close bond with the cranes. ”
“I treat them as if they were my own children, and I’m always concerned about them, especially during snowy days when they can’t get food. I feel uncomfortable and anxious when I hear them chirp and usually rush to prepare corn for them. ” It’s never been an easy job, and Chen has sustained quite a few injuries over the years, even falling into frozen marsh(沼泽)while trying to save a trapped crane in 2008. However, she never gave up. With love and responsibility, she has persisted in caring for the cranes for about 20 years.
Thanks to the joint protection efforts of Chen and staff members at the nature reserve, now more than 1,900 black-necked cranes overwinter in the area each season every year, up from about 300 when the nature reserve was established.
24. How does Chen Guanghui communicate with black-necked cranes
A. By singing folk songs. B. By imitating chirps of birds.
C. By making hand gestures. D. By blowing special whistles.
25. What do the underlined words “a mission” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Rescuing injured animals.
B. Restoring habitats for rare species.
C. Looking after black-necked cranes.
D. Building Dashanbao Nature Reserve.
26. How did Chen Guanghui feel about her initial attempts at the work
A. It is inspiring. B. It is frustrating. C. It is interesting. D. It is exciting.

Taking good care of your teeth may be linked to better brain health, according to a study published in the July 5, 2023, online issue of Neurology. “Our study found that gum (牙龈) disease and tooth loss were linked to brain shrinkage (萎缩) in the hippocampus (海马体), which plays a role in memory and Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔兹海默病),” said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi, Ph.D. of Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan.
The study involved 172 people without memory problems. Their average age was 67. Participants had dental exams and took memory tests at the beginning of the study. They also had brain scans to measure the volume of their hippocampus at the beginning of the study. This was measured again four years later. For each participant, researchers counted the number of teeth and checked for amount of gum disease.
Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with mild gum disease, having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage, which is the same for people with severe gum disease having more teeth. After adjusting for age, researchers found that for people with mild gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less tooth was equal to nearly one year of brain aging. By contrast, for people with severe gum disease the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1.3 years of brain aging.
“These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the teeth,” Yamaguchi said. “The findings suggest that controlling the progression of gum disease through regular dental visits is crucial, and that teeth with severe gum disease may need to be removed and replaced with appropriate false ones.”
Yamaguchi said future studies are needed with larger groups of people. The limitation of the study is that it was conducted in one region of Japan, so the results may not be applied to other locations.
28. What is Yamaguchi’s study mainly about
A. Causes of gum disease. B. The symptoms of brain shrinkage.
C. Ways to take good care of one’s teeth. D. The connection between the teeth and the brain.
29. How did researchers reach the conclusion
A. By making comparisons. B. By referring to previous studies.
C. By conducting a survey among dentists. D. By proving experts’ theory in experiments.
30. What do the research findings indicate
A. Gum disease is increasing among people.
B. Keeping teeth healthy is of great importance.
C. Removing natural teeth is bad for dental health.
D. Doing a routine dental checkup can avoid gum disease.
31 What is expected of the future studies according to Yamaguchi
A. Exploring treatments for gum disease.
B. Seeking new methods to improve brain health.
C. Involving people from other places in the research.
D. Applying the research to relieve Alzheimer’s disease.
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. B 31. C

【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. By contrast, for people with severe gum disease the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1.3 years of brain aging.(研究人员发现,牙齿的数量和牙龈疾病的数量与大脑左侧海马体的变化有关。 故选A项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the teeth(这些结果突出了保护牙齿健康的重要性,而不仅仅是维护牙齿)”可知,研究结果表明保持牙齿健康非常重要。故选B项。

Most autonomous vehicles test-driving in cities navigate (导航) by using 3-D maps marking every edge of roadside with almost centimeter-level accuracy. But few places have been mapped in such detail, which has left most areas like smaller towns inaccessible to those driverless cars.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) now have developed a new navigation system that guides autonomous vehicles without such accurate maps. This technology can help driverless cars travel almost anywhere.
The navigation system maps out a course down unfamiliar roads much as a human driver would by continually scanning its surroundings, with a laser sensor (激光感应器), to measure how close it is to the edges of the road. Meanwhile, the car also follows a tool like a smart phone map app that provides directions to its destination, as well as information about the rules of the road, such as speed limits and the positions of stoplights. Teddy Ort, a roboticist at MIT, test-drove a car equipped with this navigation system on a one-way road. It slowly traveled one kilometer without any human assistance.
This system assumes that a car has a clear path down the road, but it can be paired with other existing computing technology to discover in-road obstacles (障碍), says Ort. The researchers also plan to build a version of this system which can spot markings painted on streets, so that the car can drive on two-way roads. "Self-driving cars with this navigation system may need other sensors to work in different conditions,” Alexander Wyglinski, and electrical engineer at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. "Since laser sensors don’t work well in rain or snow, these cars might need additional imaging technologies to drive safely in bad weather. "
32. What may be a problem for most driverless cars
A. They fail in test-driving.
B. Their maps are out-dated.
C. They run in limited areas.
D. Their guides are unreliable.
33. What can we infer about the MIT navigation system
A. It includes accurate maps.
B. It removes in-road obstacles.
C. It works by detecting the road.
D. It features a smart phone app.
34. What is the purpose of Paragraph 4
A. To confirm the test-drive results.
B. To indicate further research areas.
C. To recognize scientists’ achievements.
D. To show the creativity of driverless cars.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. Autonomous cars beat human drivers on country roads.
B. Navigating self-driving cars may work in different conditions.
C. Smart mapping technology adds to the functions of self-driving cars.
D. A new navigation system helps autonomous cars drive remote roads.
【答案】32. C 33. C 34. B 35. D

Worldwide, at least 13% of people between the ages of 10 and 19 live with a diagnosed mental health disorder, according to the latest State of the World’s Children report. ____36____ . It also shows that adolescent mental health is highly complex, understudied and underfunded.
Psychological distress (困扰) among young people seems to be rising. One study found that rates of depression among US adolescents (aged 12 to 17) increased from 8. 5% of young adults to 13. 2% between 2005 and 2017. Another evidence is that the coronavirus pandemic worsens this trend in some countries. For example, in a nationwide study from Iceland, adolescents (aged 13 to 18) reported significantly more symptoms of mental ill health during the pandemic than did their peers before it. ____37____ .
However, there is only one-third of investment in mental-health research that is directed mainly at young people. Moreover, scientists involved tend to work inside their own fields. ____38____ , which means effective forms of prevention and treatment are limited.
____39____ . Alexander Daros at the Campbell Family Mental Health Institute in Toronto and colleagues report an analysis of 90 randomized controlled tests. They found that helping young people to improve their emotion-regulation (情绪调节) skills, which are needed to control emotional responses to difficult situations, can enable them to deal better with anxiety and depression.
Along with the report, the studies also stress the part that funders must urgently play, and why researchers and communities must work together on more studies about young people, ____40____ . Together, we can all do better to create a brighter, healthier future for a generation of young people who are facing more challenges than ever before.
A. Luckily, researchers have begun to investigate ways
B. genuinely involving young people as co-investigators

The Most Impressive School Activity
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
It’s hard to believe that I am so close to reaching the end of high school. Looking back, I find the past days has witnessed plenty of memorable activities. However, the one that stuck me as the most impressive was the coming-of-age ceremony.
To honor the students who had turned 18, a grand ceremony was held in the 2nd term of the senior year. We students, wearing traditional dress, gathered at the stadium as scheduled. First, our principal sincerely extended her congratulations on us becoming a grown-up. Then followed the Confucian-style coming-of-age ceremonies-Ji Li (for girls) and Guan Li (for boys). Finally, we made a solemn vow to shoulder the responsibilities of an adult, which was definitely the highlight.
Personally, the ceremony exerted a profound influence on us students. Not only did it fully expose us to traditional Chinese culture, but it motivated us to embrace the new identity and live up to our promise.

My dad and I had been looking forward to the Stale cross-country race of my senior year of high school, which would be the climax (顶点) of my existence.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. I always listened for his voice, which rang above the crowd-telling me to relax my arms, calling out my time. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy canals of Arizona. Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of the dairy farm, we made our way across the city. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A dream passed on from one generation to the next.
Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal - too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton, cracked with the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I gazed out at the crowd; dozens of familiar faces from church and school flickered across my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement etched across his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race began.
For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The scorching sun beat upon my back, blinding me with its brilliance. Nothing was going to stop me, though.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 However, without warning, my strength was running out. My lungs fought to take in enough air, and my feet transformed into cement bricks. Neck and neck with one of my greatest rivals, I could see the finish line. I had begun the final sprint into glory when my knees buckled and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make them hold my weight. They were as weak as jelly. Even though I knew my dreams of victory had been destroyed, I had to finish the race. With all of the strength left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled, inch by inch, across the finish line. Shame pulsed through my veins as Dad squatted down and pulled me into his arms.
I whispered “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” He gave me a gentle smile and said, “You could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your best.” Lifting my face, I saw my dad’s eyes, in which I saw the sweat, the time, and the work we had put into our dream. The miles we had run together, all for this race, flashed across my mind. “But we worked so hard. What about our dream” I asked. In that second, the world stood still. He reached over for my hand, holding back his own tears, and said, “Don’t you know that you are my dream come true ”

“In the first few days I remembered they ran away as soon as I approached them.

31. What is expected of the future studies according to Yamaguchi
A. Exploring treatments for gum disease.
B. Seeking new methods to improve brain health.
C. Involving people from other places in the research.
D. Applying the research to relieve Alzheimer’s disease.

B Their maps are out-dated.
