Habit is a behaviour you do regularly (有规律的). As a professor who studies how to help students become better readers and writers, I can tell you that research shows habits have a loop (循环). Here are the things you need to make a studying loop:
●A set time to study every day.
●A cue (提示) to start studying.
●An environment that helps you stick to your studying routine (常规).
●A prize for studying.
When you do things at the same time every day, it is easier to remember to do them. To determine how much time you should set aside each day to study, multiply (乘) your grade level by 10 minutes. That means if you’re in third grade, you would plan to spend about 30 minutes per day studying. Spending more time than that on a regular basis can cause stress, anxiety and possibly destroy healthy sleep habits.
Studying at the same time every day is one cue. but you may need something more specific when first forming your habit. This can be a calendar reminder you set on your phone. or something as simple as a card with the word “study” printed on the front.
To help yourself study, you need a place set up for work and not for doing other things. Do not study on your bed— 4that’s for sleeping— 4or in front of the television, or anywhere it’s difficult to hold and use the materials you need. Best option: a table or desk with good lighting. Your study place should limit distractions (干扰). That includes other people’s conversations and all media: TV, video games, social media, texts or music.
The prize. That said, after you finish studying, you can give yourself a little gaming or social media time as your prize. With time, the studying itself will become its own prize. Improving your knowledge and skills will give you a sense of achievement and make you more confident and happier at school. But while forming your study habit, a really fun prize will help you stick with it.

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — officials in Canada’s Atlantic Coast province of Nova Scotia said Saturday a wildfire that forced thousands of people to leave their homes over the past week is now largely controlled because of rain.
David Steeves, a technician of forest resources, said the fire in the Halifax area is about 85% controlled, sits at 9.5 square kilometre and is unlikely to grow thanks to the firefighting efforts and long - awaited rain. The blaze that broke out Sunday in the Halifax area raced through a number of other places, burning up about 200 buildings — including 151 homes — and forcing the evacuation (疏散) of more than 16, 000 people. Meanwhile, at the provincial wildfire centre in Shubenacadie. north of Halifax, about 20 Canadian Armed Forces soldiers stood in the pouring rain outside a light armored vehicle (装甲车). Lt. Col. Michael Blanchette said the soldiers had arrived on a “fact-finding task” to see what support was needed in the effort to fight the fires.
In Shelburne County, meanwhile, 6, 700 people - about half the city’s population — remained out of their homes as the blaze that forced their evacuation continued to burn out of control.
Dave Rockwood, a spokesman for the Department of Natural Resourees, said it remained to be seen that there would be no further growth and that firefighters could use more direct ways to control it. It’s still there, the Vietnamese school where my brother and I used to go. Even with a new coat of paint and the high wire fence, the school I knew ten years ago remains the same.
Every day at 5 p.m., instead of flying kites with our friends, my brother and I had to go to Vietnamese school. No amount of kicking, screaming, or arguing could stop my mother, who was determined to have us learn the language of our culture. She held us by the collar and walked with us the seven long, hilly blocks from our home to school, leaving our tearful faces before the front of the school.
We all sat in little chairs in a big empty room, which had a slight smell of old clothes that had been stored for a long time. I hated that smell. There was a stage far to the right, with an American flag on one side and the flag of the Republic of Vietnam on the other side.
Although the school mainly taught language - speaking, reading, dictation - the lessons always began with an exercise in politeness. With the entrance of the teacher, the best student would tap a bell and everyone would get up, and say in Vietnamese, “How are you, teacher ”
The language always made me embarrassed. More often than not, I had tried to separate myself from the loud voice that followed me whenever I went to the American supermarket outside our area. The voice belonged to my grandmother, a small old woman who could shout louder than anyone on the street. Her Vietnamese was quick, it was loud, it was not beautiful.
In our area, the comings and goings of hundreds of Vietnamese on their daily tasks sounded crazy. I did not want to be thought of as being mad, as talking stupid. When I spoke English, people nodded at me, smiled and encouraged me. Even Vietnamese people would laugh and say that I’d do well in life.
My brother was even stricter than I about speaking English. He was especially cruel towards my mother, scolding her for her poor English. Bits of Vietnamese were often mixed in her conversation.
After two years of struggle, I finally divorced my culture. I was permitted to stop Vietnamese school. I thought of myself as American. At last, I thought I was one of you; I wasn’t one of them.
Sadly, I am only an American.

Children returned to school after a big wildfire in Northern California. But the influence is so huge that it will be some time before the life of students there returns to normal.
Eight schools were lost to the wildfire. Government officials were not sure how many of their nearly 3,500 students would report to temporary (临时的) schools. Some families have left California. Others are staying with friends. It is too far for some of them to drive to one of those schools every day.
There are not enough classrooms for middle and high schools. So for the l3 days before the start of the traditional winter break in the school year, students will learn through independent study. They will be given homework online and be able to visit a special drop-in center in Chico, California. Children going there can get help from teachers or visit other classmates.
Loren Lighthall, a spokesman for one school there, said studying will be less important than dealing with pain and reconnecting with friends. “They don’t have their school, they don’t have their work, they don’t have their friends, they don’t have books and we’re asking them to do homework ” Light hall said. “It’s less important at this point. Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their treat dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog’s life, describes a person who has an unhappy life.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. The hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
Husbands and wives use doghouse when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at her husband for forgetting their wedding anniversary. She might tell him that he is in the doghouse and treats him badly. However, the husband may decide that it is best to leave things alone and not create more problems. He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie.
Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.

For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use — getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.
29.How did the researchers reach their conclusion
A.By analyzing a mass of data.
B.By conducting genetic research.
C.By comparing various levels of activity.
D.By tracking the subjects for many years.
30.What does the study show about depression
A.Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B.Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
C.Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D.Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
31.What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean

Jazmin Sanchez’s parents moved to Florida from Mexico shortly after they married in 1987. Over the years, they worked hard picking fruits and vegetables at farms and saved so they could provide Jazmin and her two sisters with opportunities.
“They told me that I could do anything I wanted in life, as long as I had an education and a passion,” said Jazmin, a student studying public health at the University of South Florida (USF). “I don’t want them to have to work as much as we do,” said Alida, Jazmin’s mother. “I want them to be able to choose careers that they love.”
