一、阅读理解
My 14-year-old son has been fascinated by fantasy adventure novels since elementary school. When asked why during a chat, he explained that those stories get imagination going, making himself think more broadly about the world. The chat with him inspires me to recommend four wonderful books to teens.
Kiki Kallira Breaks a Kingdom
Kiki Kallira has always been a worrier. When her anxiety has been getting out of control, one thing that always makes her feel better is drawing. Kiki keeps drawing and her sketchbook is full of fanciful characters of Indian legends her mother has told her since childhood. When her drawings come to life, she enters the fantasy world she created to save her real world.
Clarice the Brave
Themes of friendship, family, and overcoming previous prejudices are at the heart of this animal adventure tale. A young mouse, Clarice, gets separated from her brother Charles after a fight in the ship. Clarice finds herself on a lifeboat while Charles remains on the ship. As struggling to find each other across the sea, they learn the true meaning of bravery.
The Phantom Tollbooth (收费亭)
When Milo gets bored, he goes through a tollbooth that mysteriously appears in his room which magically leads him to meet new friends like Tock and go on the adventure-filled exploration of a lifetime. Full of humorous and figurative puns (双关语), the tale interests today’s young readers.
Circus Mirandus
Micah wants to help his dying grandfather reconnect with the magical Circus Mirandus that he remembers from his youth. Roland was the first in his family to go to college, looking forward to working his way up the corporate ladder. But his part-time job as a PE teacher gave him other ideas after he witnessed children ended their schooling due to poverty, and among them, there were many children with athletic talent. Then Roland’s Cheetah’s track club was born.
Roland used to be strong. Yet in his early forties, his knees brought him trouble both physically and economically. He hobbled (跛行) across the track, shouting encouragement, pausing to give instruction, and gathering the small athletes together for organized drills and stretches. The ages of the kids ranged from 8 to 18. The only cost was 15 dollars for T-shirts and shorts.
Roland had a firm belief. “None of these kids has to be what their circumstance tells them to be,” he said. And indeed, as the years went by, he’d watched former awkward learners in his school become doctors and lawyers, and coaches. Roland often shouted on the field, “A third place earns points. A sixth place pushes teammates ahead of you. Any effort works.”
A good road trip could strain any family. But the Cheetahs went on such a trip. At a national competition in Chicago, teams from Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York stepped off chartered buses, wearing matching travel clothes, and accompanied by not only coaches, but also team doctors. The Cheetahs arrived in crowded minivans, and then ten kids packed together into one room. The volunteer coaches shared a room with Roland and the few parents. They were rudely named “the team with the mismatched water bottles”.
But that strengthened everyone’s determination to win. On the day of the race, the kids rose early for breakfast. There was free bacon and eggs plus paid dessert. All the kids chose free food. “My gut doesn’t like sugar anymore,” one kid said. Other boys laughed and nodded. “We are so full of sweet optimism that we can’t stomach the artificial sugars.”
The Cheetahs finally won their share of medals and prize money at the national competition. With the money, Roland wanted to treat kids to sweets while his kids wanted to save it for surgery on Roland’s knees.

When wildlife biologist Angela Ziltener went on deep-sea dives, she often observed something extraordinary. A group of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins lined up and took turns rubbing (擦) their bodies against corals or sea sponges (海绵动物) along the seafloor. After observing dolphins for over a decade, the University of Zurich scientist and her team found that the sea mammals may be using those corals and sponges to self-medicate (自我治疗).
The dolphins brush up against soft gorgonian corals and other specific sponges. The sea mammals slide into the branches multiple times, and push body parts like their heads against more compact corals and sponges. Some dolphins even pull leather corals from the seabed, hold them in their mouths, and wave them around until a yellow and green substance oozes out and stains their bodies. The corals may make antibacterial substances that give the dolphins healthy skin, according to Science News.
The researchers suspected that the dolphins might use the corals and sponges to self-medicate, since the gorgonian coral is known to produce a thick liquid that is beneficial to dolphins. The team also noticed that the animals also rubbed their bodies against leather corals and a kind of sponges called Ircinia. Like the gorgonian coral, these creatures are known to produce bioactive substances, although the effects of those substances on dolphins are unclear. Scientists believe that additional experiments are needed to confirm the relationship.
Overall, the dolphins often queued up behind one another, waiting their turn to rub against the corals. “It’s not like they’re fighting each other for the turn,” Ziltener says to Science News. When a group of 360 dolphins visited corals located in the Northern Red Sea, the researchers also noticed that those less than one year old would watch adults brush themselves against the corals.
More research is needed to confirm their findings. Ziltener tells Popular Science that while more studies are needed, the finding reveals the importance of conserving coral reef systems.
8、Which scene related to bottlenose dolphins does Ziltener consider extraordinary
A. They swim in very large groups.
B. They are spotted in the Indo-Pacific region.
C. They help each other in healing processes.
D. They use corals and sponges as bath brushes.
9、Which can replace the underlined part “oozes out” in Paragraph 2

As COVID-19 continues to influence consumer behavior, the use of non-plastic payment methods is rising. But does this spell the end of the plastic credit card era
Since the first Diners Club credit card was unveiled in 1950, much has changed. Recent technological developments and in-store consumer preferences could suggest times are changing. For some years now, various founders of financial institutions, as well as industry experts, have foreseen plastic credit cards or any other means of physical payment methods including cash will not be around much longer. They based their predictions on the light-speed growth of digital payment.
At the beginning of the global pandemic (大流行病), governments took measures to protect their citizens, leading to lockdowns of varying degrees. The fear of contracting the virus through high-traffic ATMs and the refusal of merchants to accept cash can only be seen as a great addition to an already declared war on cash. Meanwhile, the urgency to spend a minimum time period in stores in order to avoid interactions led consumers towards digital solutions.
Furthermore, options like QR codes (二维码), NFC, and PINs have been around for a while but a true market breakthrough seems to only have happened since the beginning of the pandemic. According to Worldpay, without these telecommunication innovations, the shift in people’s payment behavior is out of the question. 86% of contactless adapters built into smart devices have seen themselves proceed with contactless payment. This trend will help to wipe out cash and plastic credit cards.
From a different perspective, countries like France, Italy, and Germany had almost 150 million smartphone users in 2019 alone. And it’s been reported that 80% of the transactions (交易) will be done via Internet-backed devices by 2025. And this figure will keep rising as more and more cheap smartphones are pouring into the global market. It is expected that e-wallets are going to be the most preferred payment method by then.
So, will there be a comeback for our beloved plastic spending power I would put away my cash and plastic cards, switch on my phone instead of inserting cards, and present QR codes at a self-checkout instead of queuing behind a mass of people. I believe that many people think the same way.
12、What are the predictions in the financial circle about
A. The Diners Club credit card will make a comeback.
B. Consumers’ preferences will be varied around the world.
C. The era of traditional payment will come to an end soon.
D. New technologies will cause the decline of physical stores.
13、What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The worldwide efforts to fight against the pandemic.
B. The economic slowdown caused by the pandemic.
C. The impact of the health crisis on ways of payment.
D. The public’s tendency to shop online during lockdowns.
14、What set the stage for the trend in payment methods according to Worldpay
A. The fast update rate of smart devices.
B. The existing digital payment technologies.
C. Many physical stores’ excellent online service.
D. The acceptance of digital payment among customers.
15、What’s the author’s attitude towards the comeback of plastic credit cards

Meredith was upset. The single mom worked a late shift but never managed to sleep past 6:00 am because of the garbage collectors! “Don’t make any noise!” she screamed out of her window. “People are trying to sleep!”
“Sorry, Madam,” Jason, the garbage collector, said. “We’re trying our best to avoid producing noise. And we’re just doing our job!” Meredith stared at him and shut her window angrily. Jason emptied the heavy garbage cans into the back of the truck. “You idiot,” Meredith said. She never expected that very soon she’d be very grateful to the young man she had just screamed at.
A week later, Meredith woke at 5:55 am because of the stomach pain. She got up and headed for the bathroom, but on her way she started feeling dizzy and sick and broke into a cold sweat. “David!” Meredith cried for her six-year-old son. “David, help me!” When David got up and reached her, Meredith was lying on the floor. “Get help,” she whispered to him. The little boy saw his mom was lying on the floor unconscious and started crying.
He wondered whom he could turn to for help. They were new in town and had no family there. And at that time, neighbors were all sleeping. Just then, the garbage truck came to collect garbage. David then rushed outside and cried anxiously, “Help! Help!” Hearing it, Jason and his teammate quickly got to David! After knowing what had happened, Jason called an ambulance and comforted David.
Soon, the ambulance arrived. The medical workers checked Meredith and found the unconsciousness was caused by anemia (贫血). They gave her first aid and claimed that Meredith would recover soon. But she needed to go to hospital and be treated with injections. Then, Meredith was taken away.
David cried sadly for his mom. Jason accompanied him, patting him on the shoulder and saying, “Don’t be afraid, and your mom will be back soon.” The six-year-old boy nodded as if he could understand. Jason couldn’t bear to leave the little boy alone at home. After asking for leave of absence, Jason stayed to take care of David.
Paragraph 1:
Then, Jason followed David into his room.
