Three years ago, Jasminka Jost was looking for a place for her young son, Vigo, to be active. She had tried playing soccer, but Vigo, who has autism (孤独症), had trouble focusing on the game. Jost needed a safe space for Vigo with coaches who specialized in meeting his needs. That’s when friends referred Jost and her family to the River City Inclusive Cym (RCIG), which offers workout classes for children, teens and adults with disabilities.
The gym has been in operation since 2016, renting space in a traditional gymnastics gym before moving to its current location on Patterson Avenue in April 2022. There’re six hour — long classes per day from Monday through Saturday, each with a maximum of seven attendees and each featuring one coach per participant.
“Our classes consist of an obstacle course,” says Mike McGrath, the founder of RCIG. “There’re four different sections of the gym, and we spend 15 minutes in each section. There’re monkey bars, swings, ropes for climbing and swinging, slides ropes for climbing and swinging, slides, and more. That can sound frightening, but we start from where they’re comfortable. If they just need to touch the rope at first, that’s OK, but our goal is to gradually build their skill level and participation.”
Vigo, now 6 years old, looks forward to classes every week. There’re classes for older kids and young adults, too. Christine Schwab has been bringing her niece. 20-year-old Brennan, for two years and says that the classes have improved her social and motor skills. “The coaches at RCIG were great at getting her to take the extra step — and to believe that she could,” Schwab says. “As a loved one, it’s amazing to see.”
Jost adds the gym is a good place to meet other people facing similar challenges. “Even beyond the classes, there’s a deep sense of community and belonging.” she says. “Vigo has made a lot of little friends, and it’s an opportunity to meet other parents. It’s a place we can all go and just be ourselves.”

After waking up, you may feel frustrated that you cannot recall the dreams you had last night. Artificial intelligence (AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn text into images. They can do this by learning from both text and images. This time, researchers have trained an AI system called Stable Diffusion to re-create images based on people’s brain scans.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, the US, which consisted of brain scans from four participants as they each viewed a set of 10,000 photos. The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI).
The AI system then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the FMRI data — when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. Through this method, the AI system learned how human beings would react when seeing different photos.
Finally, the researchers tested the AI system on additional brain scans from the same participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, an airplane, a clock and a train. If the person looked at an airplane, the AI system would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text-to-image” model and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”. The final images were with about 80 percent of accuracy.
The new study created a novel approach that incorporates (合并) text and images to “decipher (破译) the brain”, Ariel Goldstein said. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thoughts and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive reality.
8. What can AI system Stable Diffusion do
A. Build images from brain scans. B. Turn text into concrete images.
C. Scan the brains of people. D. Make our brains more active.
9. How does the author introduce the study in Paragraph 5

C. By making the definition. D. By explaining the reason.
10. What do we know about the study result
A. It was astonishing. B. It was confusing.
C. It was convincing. D. It was disappointing.
11. Where can we most likely read the text
A. In a diary. B. In a text. C. In a guidebook. D. In a magazine.

The San Francisco-based company, called Living Carbon, has created poplar (杨树) trees that are genetically engineered (改变基因结构) to grow larger and suck up more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than standard trees do. In February, workers planted rows of these poplars in southern Georgia. The company intends to plant 4 to 5 millions trees by the middle of next year, which they say will help with the worsening climate crisis.
When plants photosynthesize (进行光合作用), they convert carbon into sugar and nutrients that are eventually consumed by all living organisms. But they also produce a harmful byproduct, which must be broken down during the energy-intensive process of photorespiration (光呼吸), said Yumin Tao, the company’s vice president of biotechnology.
“This is not only wastes energy but also loses much fixed carbon in the form of CO2, which gets released into the air again,” Tao added. “It’s a wasteful process many plants do.” Living Carbon has reduced photorespiration in its poplars, instead channeling the energy into growth, he says.
The trees have three genes inserted to achieve this, including one from squash and one from green algae. But the company has yet to show its modified trees can capture more carbon in a real — world setting. Its only publicly available data comes from a study in a greenhouse that lasted for only a few months and has yet to be peer reviewed. “Their claims seen bold based on very limited real-world data,” says Andrew Newhouse, a conservation biologist at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
Still, the study reported the modified poplars grew as much as 53% larger in five months compared to the unmodified ones, capturing 27% more carbon dioxide. Now, the company hopes its other field trials in locations like Oregon and Pennsylvania will show similar successes. It’s currently focused on planting on private lands, where fewer roadblocks exist.
“We specially focus on land where trees otherwise wouldn’t be planted, like abandoned mine lands-areas where there isn’t an existing, rich ecosystem that’s allowing for a large amount of carbon removal right now,” says Maddie Hall, Living Carbon’s CEO.
12. Why does the company want to plant genetically modified poplars
A. To help with the worsening climate crisis.
B. To better study them to gain more accurate data.
C. To replace ordinary poplars with genetically modified poplars.
D. To find suitable places for genetically modified poplars to grow.
13. What is Andrew Newhouse’s attitude to the company’s findings
A. Disapproving. B. Ambiguous. C. Skeptical. D. Supportive.
14. What can we learn about the genetically-engineered poplars
A. They are very resistant to carbon. B. They have a growth advantage.
C. They have two genes inserted. D. They photosynthesize even faster.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. A Company Is Trying to Engineer Trees Genetically
B. Poplar Trees Might Be Planted All Around the World
C. Genetically Modified Trees Are Taking Root to capture Carbon
D. Research Is Being Conducted to Use Trees to Remove CO2

I looked around the crowded waiting room at the hospital and sighed. Would the doctor be able to see my eight-year-old son next I couldn’t stop shaking as the wound in his forehead was deep.
We were at the hospital because another child had thrown a rock at Luke during the break as he was running around the corner.
Luke received four stitches (缝针). I fought back the urge to cry. For the next two days, his eye was swollen shut and black and blue. I felt like I’d had a mini nervous breakdown. Every time I tried to sleep or tend to do some housework, horrible thoughts crept into my mind. What if he’d lost his eye What if he’d had brain damage His doctor assured me he was going to be fine, but the what-ifs kept coming. Fear had taken over, and then the fear turned to anger. I was angry with the child who’d thrown the rock. I just couldn’t shake it. What was she thinking She should have known better.
Several days later, Luke’s teacher called me that evening to see how he was feeling, telling me Katie felt terrible and heartbroken over what had happened. I asked the teacher to make Katie understand she couldn’t do that and remind her of the dangers of throwing rocks. The teacher agreed, which made me feel better.
I noticed that as Luke started to heal physically, I wasn’t as angry. I thought about Katie and Luke. I wanted to stand up for my son, protect him, but I didn’t want to mistreat Katie because I learned from the teacher Katie really was a nice kid and that she was just trying to remove the rock so no other children would trip on it.
Last night, Luke’s teacher stopped by and dropped off a get-well card that Katie had made. Luck and I read it several times, and I couldn’t help but feel a little choked up. It was a sincere apology.

A. By analyzing some data. B. By giving the example.

【答案】One possible version:
Will ChatGPT replace humans
Will ChatGPT replace humans My answer is simple and clear: No, it’s absolutely impossible.
For one thing, I don’t think ChatGPT has the ability to create like a human. Even though it can answer questions and write articles, it actually produces contents only based on what it has been fed. For another, it lacks real feelings and emotions. When it comes to offering personalized service, in no sense can a cold machine beat a warm person.
My final conclusion is: Just like the Internet and smart phones ChatGPT will serve us instead of replacing us. And if used properly, it will make our lives easier, better and more pleasant.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
I wanted this to be a teachable moment for Luke to learn about forgiveness. I wanted to let go of my own anger, too. I asked Luke if he was ready to forgive her. After all, his opinion counted the most. He thought about it for a moment, smiled and said, “Yes.” He knew she hadn’t done it on purpose. Children are so resilient and so honest. They don’t hold onto resentment as adults do sometimes. Their hearts are pure, so we wrote Katie a letter together, reading, “We know it was an unfortunate accident. We forgive you, and we hope you forgive yourself.”
The next morning, Luke and I waited for Katie with the letter at the school gate. Finally came Katie. When she spotted us, she paused and forced a smile. Luke trotted beside her with wild little hops, handing her the letter. No sooner had she unfolded it than a relieved and happy smile bloomed on her face, which made Luke feel much better. She skipped to give me a big hug. I hugged her back. We didn’t have to say anything else; we all knew it was forgiveness that was the most important step in healing.
