In July 2020, Rex and Britnee Smith realized their two pet dogs, Jack and Jill, were no longer in their fenced backyard in Little Rock Arkansas. They went from door to door in their neighborhood, putting up posters, reaching out to animal shelters and vets’ offices and posting on social media. It was a sad time for the Smiths, especially for their 5-year-old daughter, who had a special bond with the dogs.
Eventually in December, the Smiths and their two children had to relocate about 300 miles away to McKinney, Texas. They still occasionally received calls from shelters or got pictures of dogs that could be theirs, but Jack and Jill were never located. While the Smiths had heard stories about dogs being found and returned to their owners via microchips, they never expected that to happen to them.
Then in late July 2023, the Little Rock Animal Village called Rex to inform him Jill had been found. He immediately called Britnee, who cried tears of joy. Britnee was a little nervous as they drove to pick up Jill, worried that she wouldn’t remember them or had changed to be more aggressive. But that wasn’t the case.
“It’s like she never left us,” Britnee recalled. “She came right into our arms.” The Smiths said they were unsure what happened to Jill in the three years away, although she’d been found just a few blocks away from their old house. “We wish she could talk,” Rex said. “We have so many questions to ask her.” Jill was overall healthy but had suffered some scratches. Her paws were raw, likely from the 100-degree Fahrenheit heat in Arkansas.
The Smiths immediately took her to the vet and dog spa where Jill had her nails clipped, her teeth brushed and her hair combed.
Now they’re still on the lookout for Jack.
4. What did the Smiths do after the loss of their dogs
A. They added a fence to their backyard.
B. They tried every means to look for them.
C. They did their best to comfort their daughter.
D. They moved house instantly to avoid sadness.
5. Why was Britnee anxious on the way to picking up Jill
A. Years of separation might make them feel distant.
B. The phone call might end up being fruitless again.
C. Jill might have suffered unimaginable abuse.
D. Her expectation might make her uncontrollable on the scene.
6. How was Jill when she got reunited with her owners
A. She looked sick and weak. B. She was beyond recognition.
C. She was physically injured. D. She was unable to make a sound.
7. What conclusion can be drawn about Jill from the text
A She was adopted several times.
B. She was with Jack in the past few years.
C. She was discovered near Britnee’s new home.
D. She was indeed greatly valued by her owners.

In the 1994 film Forrest Gump, there’s a famous saying, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” The surprise is part of the fun. Now blind box toys are bringing the magic of surprise to online shopping.
A blind box toy is hidden inside similar boxes but invisible from the outside. You don’t know what will be inside, although the toys typically come from pop culture, ranging from movies to comics and cartoons (动漫).
Blind boxes have become popular since they were first introduced from Japan to China in 2014. According to a 2019 Tmall report, the mini-series of Labubu blind box, designed by Hong Kong-born Kasing Lung, was named Champion of Unit Sales with 55,000 sold in just 9 seconds during the Singles Day shopping event. Most customers for blind boxes are young people aged 18 to 35.
According to The Paper, blind box toys are popular in part because of their cute looks. The typically site cartoon figures come in very small sizes, making them suitable for display almost anywhere. Even if blind boxes are not their top choice for decorations, the mystery and uncertainty of the process also attracts people. It’s the main reason why people buy blind boxes one after another.
“Expectíng the unknown is always a part of the box-opening process (过程),” said Miss Cao,24、who lives and works in Shenyang, speaking to Sina Nows. She said: “Until you open all the boxes, you cannot know what it is inside.”
Opening a blind box is a happy little surprise for our boring daily lives, something small but fun to wait for each day, week or month. When people open this simple little box, they may be disappointed, but the uncertainty is part of the fun. People will open more blind boxes and hope for a better result.
When someone remakes Forrest Gump, don’t be surprised if he says, “Life is like a blind box.”
8. What do we know about blind boxes from the text
A. They are popular only in China. B. They are visible from the outside.
C. They were first designed in 2014. D. They may bring surprise to our life.
9. Why do people buy blind boxes according to Miss Cao
A. Because blind boxes are fashionable gifts. B. Because blind boxes are educational gifts.
C. Because people prefer the colorful boxes. D. Because people enjoy box-opening process.
10. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to blind boxes
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.
11. What is the main idea of the article
A. The cultural effects of blind boxes. B. The origin of blind boxes.
C. The popularity of blind boxes. D. The problems with blind boxes.

We still don’t understand the influence of the mind’s power over the body, nor do we understand why there should be such power. All we can say for certain is that the mind does have power over the body in very many different ways.
If a man is told that he is at the North Pole and he believes what he is told, he’ll show physical signs which suggest that his body is reacting as though he were at the North Pole. He’ll go pale and shiver. When the film Lawrence of Arabia was shown, cinema managers around the world reported that the sales of ice cream rocketed. The endless desert scenes had made the moviegoers feel uncomfortably hot.
Hypnotists use the power of the mind over the body in order to use their influence. The hypnotist must only convince the patient that something is true, and the patient will act accordingly. If he convinces the patient that his arms are as heavy as lead, then the patient will be unable to lift his arms. If he convinces the patient that a piece of ice is a hot iron and he then touches the patient’s skin with the ice, a blister(水泡)will develop. The body will react to the suggestion and not to the reality, and signs of a real burn will appear.
12. From the passage, we can imagine that people watching a film about the North Pole would probably want __________.
A. an ice cream B. a cold shower C. a hot drink D. a hot iron
13. . A hypnotist is supposed to be able to control __________.
A. patients’ bodies B. people’s minds
C. patients’ diseases D. people’s movements
14. The phrase “the reality” refers to __________.
A. a real burn B. a hot iron C. the touch of ice D. the body’s reaction
15. A good title for this passage would be __________.
A. Mind and Body B. Physical Signs
C. Research on Mind D. The Power of the Mind

第二节(满分15分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea: the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake (地震) had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

The Smiths immediately took her to the vet and dog spa, where Jill had her nails clipped, her teeth brushed and her hair combed.
Now they’re still on the lookout for Jack.

A. Years of separation might make them feel distant.
B. The phone call might end up being fruitless again.

6. How was Jill when she got reunited with her owners

【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是根据第一段“We still don’t understand the influence of the mind’s power over the body, nor do we understand why there should be such power.

【答案】 I knew I should do something. I went to my piggy bank and was about to break it and take out the money when my mind came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. Thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the coins rolled all over the floor. “Yes, those children need help and need the money more.” I said to myself.
My grandfather was surprised by my behavior. When he realized what had happened, he touched my head and said, “Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you. ” He continued, “My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let’s buy that bike together now. ” “Thank you, Grandpa.” I was overwhelmed with happiness.
