Mia Samolinski attended the same school as Anthony Zhongor, an 18-year-old freshman, but the two had never met. That night, their paths crossed in the most remarkable way.
Mia had just gotten into her car and was about to drive away, but she hit the gas instead of the brakes. Security footage (录像) shows the car rushing over a sidewalk, hitting a trash can, and then plunging (突然前冲) into the dark, cold water of the bay in just a few short seconds. People rushed to look in the water, but only one person jumped in after Mia, and it was Anthony.
“She went pretty deep in there,” the teenager recalled. “She was striking the door and the window, trying to break the window, of course, and that got me nervous and scared for her, so I just took my clothes off and went into the water.”
Mia’s car began to sink rapidly, but she couldn’t get the doors or windows open. Anthony tried to get the doors open from the outside, but couldn’t quite manage it. As the seconds ticked by, the teenage hero realized he could use his own body weight to push down the heavy front end of the car, making the back end stick out of the water. Mia climbed into the back and managed to escape through the rear hatch She and Anthony swam to the shore together. As soon as they were safe, tearful Mia thanked Anthony sincerely for saving her.
Like so many heroes, Anthony did not set out to save a life that night. But he was in the right place, at the right time. “It doesn’t matter who it was, he or she was suffering,” he said, “I couldn’t watch anybody suffering in front of me.”
4. What led Mia into the accident
A. The brake’s failing.
B. Her wrong operation.
C. Her awkward driving skill.
D. The complex traffic situation.
5. How did Anthony help Mia escape from the car
A. He opened the back door.
B. He broke one of the windows.
C. He kept the back of the car out of the water.

B. Creative and gifted.
C. Lucky and friendly.
D. Generous and careful.
7. What message does the last paragraph mainly convey
A. Heroes are never accidental.
B. Heroes come from teenagers.
C. Heroes are not born but made.
D. Behind every hero hides a tragedy.

It’s known that reading is good for a child’s vocabulary and literacy skills, teaching them math or science concepts and helping them learn history. Apart from those, reading has another benefit. Have you read a story and felt tears well up because of a character’s suffering If so, that is because you have empathy (共鸣) for the character — and empathy can be learned through various fictions. “It’s a magic eye that sees into other people’s hearts,” explains author Cressida Cowell.
Research shows that human brains react differently to stories and facts. “Many more areas of your brain light up when you’re enjoying a story,” explains Miranda McKearney from EmpathyLab, an organization that builds empathy through reading. “Your brain thinks you are in the story… This means you experience the characters’ thoughts as if they are real.”
Empathy helps you to read people’s emotions and work out the best way to respond. This skill, called emotional intelligence, can make it easier to communicate and connect with people. Research has shown that building empathy can lead to greater kindness and tolerance. One study found that children who read the Harry Potter novels — which tell stories about humans fighting against the evil — were less likely to behave unfairly towards powerless groups including refugees (难民).
This theory has been put into practice by St Michael’s Primary School. After reading The Boy at the Back of the Class — a story about a boy who is a refugee escaping from the war — students in that school were inspired to do a 10-mile walk for the non-profit organization Refugee Action. Their empathy also spurred them to raise 1,000 for people who were forced to leave their homes because of war.
Reading encourages children to empathise with others, which could potentially lead to several beneficial learning outcomes, new research suggests. For society to develop, creative, communicative and empathetic individuals really matter.
8. Why do readers cry about a character’s experience
A. They have magic eyes. B. They want to show empathy.
C. They understand his feelings D. They have the same experience.
9. What does the author show by referring to the Harry Potter novels
A. The process of building empathy.
B. The benefits of developing empathy.
C. The definition of emotional intelligence.
D. The results of the school’s activity.
10. What does the underlined word “spurred” mean in paragraph 4
A. Reminded. B. Permitted. C. Persuaded. D. Encouraged.
11. What might the author advise children to do
A. Read to learn empathy.
B. Become empathetic to others.
C. Put themselves in others’ shoes.
D. Read as many books as possible.

Since the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was passed in 1973, it has helped hundreds of species avoid extinction in the United States. The strong conservation policy has been used as a model in other countries. But it’s not as successful as it could be, a new study finds.
Researchers have discovered most species are not being protected until their numbers have become so low that their chance of recovery is slim.
“The ESA is an incredibly powerful, ambitious law for protecting our endangered wildlife. Yet, for decades, the agency primarily responsible for operating the ESA — the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) — has been starved of resources,” lead author Erich Eberhard says.
“As a result, we are very slow to give species the protection that they deserve. We typically wait until species are extremely rare and thus at extreme risk of extinction, and then, when a species is finally listed, the USFWS is straining its resources to try to recover it.”
In 1993, a study found that few species received protection under the ESA until their populations became very small. For the new study, researchers repeated the methods used in the earlier research to see whether protections have become better since the problem was first noted. They also looked at trends in “wait times” — the amount of time between when a species is identified as potentially needing protection and when it actually receives protection under the ESA.
“Our analysis suggests that, in the nearly 30 years since attention was first brought to this problem, we have not become more active in protecting endangered species,” says Eberhard.
The researchers found that the population sizes of species when they first became protected under the ESA are not statistically different from those in the 1993 study. They also discovered that there are long wait times between when a species is identified as likely needing protection and when they actually receive them.
“I can say that our study paints the current state of the ESA as a bit of cautionary (告诫的) tale for the strong conservation policy,” says Eberhard.
12. What problem does the USFWS have protecting endangered species
A. It takes ineffective measures. B. It is lacking in resources.
C. It can’t get timely information. D. It is an irresponsible organization.
13. What is the purpose of the new study
A. To try out new ways to protect endangered species.
B. To find out the exact number of endangered species.
C. To check the time needed to save endangered species.
D. To see if endangered species have been better protected.
14. How can the study help with animal conservation
A. It found out many more endangered species.
B. It pointed out the direction for the USFWS to act on.
C. It proved the role of the public in conservation.
D. It showed some effective ways to protect animals.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. The USFWS Needs Stronger Laws
B. The ESA Has Achieved Great Success
C. New Conversation Laws Are on the Way
D. Endangered Species Act Isn’t Working Well

I’ve learned a lot in my many years in the gym, and beginner-me would be shocked by the things present-me does during the workouts. ___16___. And I’ve broken pretty much every other rule besides.
Rest days are a convenient tool for making sure you’re not overworking yourself, but that’s all. Organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine recommend leaving 48 hours between intense strength-training periods for a given muscle. ___17___, it’s meant to be a general recommendation for beginners and for people who are exercising just to stay healthy. Once you’re talking about athletes or enthusiasts, they acknowledge that training most days of the week is fine, if your program manages tiredness effectively.
The “10% rule” is a not-terrible guideline for figuring out how quickly to improve your training. ___18___. As running coach Jason Fitzgerald told us, “While the saying is to only increase weekly mileage (英里数) by 10%, this may be either too conservative or even too aggressive depending on where you start from.” If you’re a beginner and your mileage is overall very low; if we took the rule seriously, you wouldn’t be able to increase from zero to any other number.
___19___, but none of them are necessary. Creatine (肌酸) is one of the best-known muscle-building supplements (补充剂). It’s understood to be effective, but here’s the thing: That it does something for most people doesn’t mean it does very much. Likewise, protein powder is a helpful way to get more protein in your diet, but you don’t need to use a supplement. ___20___.
A. But if you look at where they get that number
B. You can just eat more protein-containing foods
C. There are a few supplements that can help you in your fitness journey

E. But it’s a suggestion, not a rule to be strictly obeyed

G. With the benefit of experience, I now do exercises I used to think one should “never” do

Two days ago, Zaib refused to take her lunch.
“Zaib, Honey! Is everything alright Why you didn’t take your lunch Didn’t you feel any hunger ” Rohana, her mother asked.
“I didn’t like it. A friend of mine was having dairy chocolate. I want these”, Zaib said in an offended mood.
“No problem. We will get these next week, I promise”, she tried to convince her.
“No, I need them today.” she said in an angry manner and rushed towards the room.
Rohana wasn’t having her salary for two months because her company had fallen into crises. Now, she was a bit tense about her daughter’s demand and wondered what to do.
Next day, Zaib didn’t eat anything and rushed to school. The girl with dairy chocolate was none other than her cousin, Saddaf. For the whole day, she was upset, thinking about her mother. She thought her mother didn’t love her deep, and that was why she didn’t meet her demand. When school bell rang, she decided to go to Saddaf’s house.
In Saddaf’s room, they did their homework, and then played. Her aunt Mrs. Saba prepared meal for both of them. “Aunt Saba is much better than Mummy”, she thought. Mrs. Saba told her that her mother had to work till late at night, so she could stay with them that night. She gladly accepted this offer.
Next day, she thought aunt Saba would pack some dairy chocolate in her lunch box, but Mrs. Saba just asked her to take breakfast. Neither did she ask her to bring her lunch box nor did she fill her box with chocolates. Her home was nearby, so she asked aunt Saba to drop her at her home where she might meet her mummy and bring her lunch. Saba aunt ordered her driver to do so.
D. He managed to push the car to the shallow end.
6. Which of the following best describes Anthony
A. Brave and helpful.
B. Creative and gifted.
C. Lucky and friendly.
D. Generous and careful.
7. What message does the last paragraph mainly convey
A. Heroes are never accidental.
B. Heroes come from teenagers.
C. Heroes are not born but made.
D. Behind every hero hides a tragedy.
B 5. C 6. A 7. A

根据第二段中的“Mia had just gotten into her car and was about to drive away, but she hit the gas instead of the brakes. (Mia刚上车,正要开车离开,但她没有踩刹车,而是踩了油门)”可知,Mia踩的是油门,而不是刹车,也就是说是她的操作失误导致了这起事故。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“As the seconds ticked by, the teenage hero realized he could use his own body weight to push down the heavy front end of the car, making the back end stick out of the water. Mia climbed into the back and managed to escape through the rear hatch (后备箱盖). She and Anthony swam to shore together.
根据第二段中的“People rushed to look in the water, but only one person jumped in after Mia, and it was Anthony. (人们争先恐后地往水里看,但只有一个人在Mia之后跳了进去,那就是Anthony。)”和最后一段中的“‘It doesn’t matter who it was, he or she was suffering,’ he said, ‘I couldn’t watch anybody suffering in front of me.’(‘不管是谁,他或她都在受苦,’他说,‘我看不得任何人在我面前受苦。’)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“Like so many heroes, Anthony did not set out to save a life that night. But he was in the right place, at the right time. “It doesn’t matter who it was, he or she was suffering,” he said, “I couldn’t watch anybody suffering in front of me.”(像许多英雄一样,Anthony那天晚上并没有出发去拯救一条生命。但他只是在正确的时间出现在了正确的地点。“不管是谁,他或她都在受苦,”他说,“我看不到任何人在我面前受苦。”)可知,Anthony成为英雄绝非偶然,而是Anthony不忍他人受苦、心地善良的必然结果。因此,最后一段主要传达的信息是英雄从来都不是偶然的。故选A。

C 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据第一段中“Have you read a story and felt tears well up because of a character’s suffering If so, that is because you have empathy (共鸣) for the character — and empathy can be learned through various fictions. (你是否读过一个故事,因为一个角色的痛苦而热泪盈眶?如果是这样,那是因为你对角色有同理心——同理心可以通过各种小说来学到)”可知,读者因为角色的经历而流泪是因为他们对他有同理心,能理解角色的感受。故选C项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Research has shown that building empathy can lead to greater kindness and tolerance. One study found that children who read the Harry Potter novels — which tell stories about humans fighting against the evil — were less likely to behave unfairly towards powerless groups including refugees (难民). (研究表明,建立同理心可以带来更大的善良和宽容。一项研究发现,读过《哈利波特》小说的孩子不太可能对包括难民在内的弱势群体做出不公平的行为,小说讲述了人类与邪恶作斗争的故事)”可知,此处在讨论建立同理心的好处,因此提到《哈利波特》小说是以阅读过它的孩子们的实例来佐证这些好处。故选B项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“After reading The Boy at the Back of the Class — a story about a boy who is a refugee escaping from the war — students in that school were inspired to do a 10-mile walk for the non-profit organization Refugee Action.
根据最后一段中“Reading encourages children to empathise with others, which could potentially lead to several beneficial learning outcomes, new research suggests. For society to develop, creative, communicative and empathetic individuals really matter.
C. New Conversation Laws Are on the Way
D. Endangered Species Act Isn’t Working Well
B 13. D 14. B 15. D

D. Or they may keep you at the same mileage for weeks at a time
E. But it’s a suggestion, not a rule to be strictly obeyed
F. And finally, drinks can give you more energy in the gym
G. With the benefit of experience, I now do exercises I used to think one should “never” do
G 17. A 18. E 19. C 20. B
根据空前内容“Organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine recommend leaving 48 hours between intense strength-training periods for a given muscle.(美国运动医学学院等组织建议,对某块肌肉进行高强度力量训练的间隔为48小时)”可知,美国运动医学学院等组织建议,对某块肌肉进行高强度力量训练的时间间隔为48小时。根据空后的“it’s meant to be a general recommendation for beginners and for people who are exercising just to stay healthy(它意味着对初学者和那些只是为了保持健康而锻炼的人的一般建议)”可知,A项“但如果你看看他们是从哪儿得出那个数字的”符合此处的语境。A项中的that number指的是上文中的“... 48 hours between intense strength-training periods for a given muscle.”。故选A。
空前一句“The ‘10% rule’ is a not-terrible guideline for figuring out how quickly to improve your training.(“10%规则”是一个不糟糕的指导方针,它可以帮助你理清如何快速地提高训练(水平))”指出,“10%规则”是一个不糟糕的指导方针,它可以帮助你理清如何快速地提高训练(水平)。根据下文内容“As running coach Jason Fitzgerald told us, ‘While the saying is to only increase weekly mileage (英里数) by 10%, this may be either too conservative or even too aggressive depending on where you start from.’(正如跑步教练Jason Fitzgerald告诉我们的那样,‘虽然俗话说每周只增加10%的里程数,但这可能过于保守,甚至过于激进,这取决于你从哪里开始。’)” 所以E项“但这(只)是一个建议,而不是一条需要严格遵守的规定”符合语境,选项中的it指代上文中的“the ‘10% rule’”,且下文的例子“If you’re a beginner and your mileage is overall very low; if we took the rule seriously, you wouldn’t be able to increase from zero to any other number.(如果你是初学者,你的里程总体上很低;如果我们认真对待这个规则,你就不能从0增加到任何其他数)”也进一步论证了E项的内容。
由空前内容“Likewise, protein powder is a helpful way to get more protein in your diet, but you don’t need to use a supplement.(同样,蛋白粉是一种从饮食中获得更多蛋白质的有效方法,但你不需要使用补充剂)”可知,(补充)蛋白粉是一种从饮食中获取更多蛋白质的有效方法,但你不需要使用补充剂。

These days more and more genetically modified crops have entered the market, which are favored by many consumers.
On the one hand, genetically modified crops have many advantages compared with conventional crops. For one thing, they can increase production, which can help tackle the crisis of global food shortages. And for another, the combined effect of fewer pesticides and lower production cost results in lower food prices overall. On the other hand, their disadvantages are also obvious. They may cause damage to people and the environment, affecting crop variety and destroying the balance of nature.
As for me, I believe genetically modified crops could benefit human beings, if we do our best to avoid their harmful effects.

Then she went to kitchen to take her lunch box, returned to aunt’s car. Staring at the box on her way to school, she felt very disappointed and upset, because she thought her lunch must be ordinary as usual. She admired her cousin very much and wanted to live in aunt’s house, where she could eat her favourite chocolate.
During lunch time, she opened the box unwillingly. When she opened her lunch box, she saw a heart-shaped chocolate surprisingly. She blushed to admit it, but she bitterly regretted her mood and attitude to her mummy.
