Six years ago, something unforgettable happened. My wife, Liz, and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary that year. It was a lovely event hosted by our sons for us. Many wonderful friends from the past surprised us with presents and congratulations. Our gift to each other was a driving trip out west. We drove from Ontario into Albertu, then southward into Glacier National Parkin Montana, and continued to Yellowstone National Park.
It was a cold spring day, and the Beartooth Highway had opened for the season just days before. Alongside the road, there was still a great amount of snow remaining. The scenery was so impressive that we made numerous stops to record memories with my camera. At roughly the highest point of the highway, I stopped at a lookout to catch the amazing views, with my wife in the centre of my camera lens.
There were not many vehicles on the road. Occasionally, cars with energetic young tourists passed by. And then we heard the sound of a motorcycle in the distance. The driver of the motorcycle, in rags, parked behind our car. As he approached us, his only words were, “Give me your camera and get over there with your wife.” I must admit I felt nervous that we might be robbed where we just created some beautiful memories. Surprisingly, he just took a picture of us, handed back my camera and rode off before we could express our gratitude. The photo he took is one of the most cherished and prized of our trip.
I learnt my lesson somewhere I least expected it. We should never judge a man by his appearance. If the motorcycle driver reads this story and remembers the situation, we would like to say “thank you” to him.
4. According to the passage, the trip was _________.
A. a gift for their wedding anniversary B. a suggestion from their friends
C. in late autumn six years ago D. taken by train to the west
5. Why was the author nervous when the motorcyclist offered to take a picture
A. The motorcyclist would break the camera.
B. He could lose the camera with memories.
C. The motorcyclist might not be good at taking pictures.
D His wife might not be satisfied with the view there.
6. Which of the following best describes the driver of the motorcycle
A. Kind and straightforward. B. Cautious and admirable.
C. Rich and skeptical. D. Creative and tolerant.
7. Which of the following can conclude the passage
A. There is no best, only better. B. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
C. Put yourself in others’ shoes. D. A contented mind is an everlasting feast.
C
As cities balloon with growth, access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to find. If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild.
Past research has found health and wellness benefits of nature for humans, but a new study shows that wildness in urban areas is extremely important for human well-being.
The research team focused on a large urban park. They surveyed several hundred park-goers, asking them to submit a written summary online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissions, coding (编码) experiences into different categories. For example, one participant’s experience of “We sat and listened to the waves at the beach for a while” was assigned the categories “sitting at beach” and “listening to waves.”
Across the 320 submissions, a pattern of categories the researchers call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important to visitors. These include encountering wildlife, walking along the edge of water, and following an established trail.
Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a weekend hike in the park. Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break.
“We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen, we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn, a senior author of the study.
8. What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text
A. Pocket parks are now popular. B. Wild nature is hard to find in cities.
C. Many cities are overpopulated. D. People enjoy living close to nature.
9. Why did the researchers code participant submissions into categories
A. To compare different types of park-goers. B. To explain why the park attracts tourists.
C. To analyze the main features of the park. D. To find patterns in the visitors’ summaries.
10. What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 5
A. Walking is the best way to gain access to nature.
B. Young people are too busy to interact with nature.
C. The same nature experience takes different forms.
D. The nature language enhances work performance.
11. What should be done before we can interact with nature according to Kahn
A. Language study. B. Environmental conservation.
C. Public education. D. Intercultural communication.
D
“Children who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk of becoming nearsighted, ”new research suggests.
In the study, researchers looked at about 1, 900 schoolchildren. The scientists found that the kids who had been instructed to spend more time outdoors over three years were 23 percent less likely to develop nearsightedness during this time than those who had not been instructed to spend more time outdoors. Moreover, among the kids who did become nearsighted during the study, the degree to which their eyesight worsened was slightly smaller among those who spent more time outdoors.
The researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was 7 at the start of the study, to attend one additional 60-minute class of outdoor activities during each school day for three years. The parents of these children were also encouraged to engage their children in outdoor activities after school, especially during weekends and holidays. The other half of the children, from another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years, 30.4percent of the kids in the intervention (干预) group had become nearsighted, compared with 38.5percent of the kids in the other group.
“It is not clear exactly why spending more time outside would benefit children’s eyesight, ”the researchers said. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light intensity (强度) found outdoors may increase the release of the chemical dopamine (多巴胺) of the eye. In turn, dopamine is known to restrain (抑制) the type of growth in the eye that is associated with nearsightedness.
Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. However, it’s important to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV (紫外线的) light, which can be damaging.
12. What did the children in the intervention group do during each school day
A. Attend an extra class of outdoor activities.
B. Continue to do their usual activities.
C. Spend one hour in doing eye exercises.
D. Participate in outdoor activities with parents.
13. What can be inferred about the chemical dopamine
A. It can contribute to poor sight. B. It can damage people’s brain.
C. It is beneficial to eyesight. D. It means low levels of light intensity.
14. What may be discussed in the following paragraph
A. How to design outdoor activities for kids.
B. How to prevent kids becoming nearsighted.
C. How to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light.
D. How to encourage adults to join in outdoor activities.
15. Which can serve as the best title for the passage
A. The More Time Outdoors, the Better
B. Kids May See Better if They Play Outside
C. All Kids Should Join in Outdoor Activities
D. Researchers Found a Cure for Nearsightedness

On a train to Smithville, a man happened to sit down next to a young man no more than 17 years old. Because the boy was tense, the man wondered what could be worrying him. Whatever it was, the boy’s tension was clear.
The boy kept staring out of the window, paying no attention to anyone else on the train. The man opened up a book and started reading. Now and then, he would look up and see the boy’s face pressed against the window. He sensed that the boy was fighting to keep from crying.
Finally, the boy asked the man, “Do you know what time it is And do you know when we are to arrive at Smithville ” The man gave the boy the time. Then the boy told the man the whole story of his life. “Four years ago,” he said, “I did something bad hurting my dad, so bad that I had to run away from home. I couldn’t face my father. So I left without even saying goodbye to him. Since then, I have worked here and there. I never stayed very long in one place. I’ve been pretty lonely. Until finally, I decided that I want to go back to my father and apologized to him.”
The man went on to ask, “Does your father know you’re coming ” And the boy responded, “He knows I’m coming, but I don’t know if he will be there. I sent him a letter. I didn’t know if he would still want me back. I wasn’t sure if he would forgive me. So in my letter, I told him that if he wanted me to come home, he could put a sign on a tree which is a few hundred yards before the railroad station in Smithville. I told him that I would look for a yellow ribbon(丝带)on one of the branches of that tree as the train passes. If there is a yellow ribbon on the tree, then I’ll get off.
D. His wife might not be satisfied with the view there.
6. Which of the following best describes the driver of the motorcycle
A. Kind and straightforward. B. Cautious and admirable.
C. Rich and skeptical. D. Creative and tolerant.
7. Which of the following can conclude the passage
A. There is no best, only better. B. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
C. Put yourself in others’ shoes. D. A contented mind is an everlasting feast.
A 5. B 6. A 7. B

8 What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text
B 9. D 10. C 11. B

根据第一段内容“As cities balloon with growth, access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to find. If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild.(随着城市的飞速发展,生活在城市地区的人们越来越难以接近大自然。如果你幸运的话,你住的地方附近可能会有一个袖珍公园,但在城市里找到相对天然的地方是罕见的)”可知,文章开头作者讲述了一种现象,在城市里,人们很难找到野生的自然。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“They surveyed several hundred park-goers, asking them to submit a written summary online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissions, coding (编码) experiences into different categories. (他们调查了数百名公园游客,要求他们在网上提交一份书面总结,描述他们在公园里与大自然有意义的互动。然后,研究人员检查了这些提交的信息,将体验分为不同的类别)”可知,研究人员按照公园游客提交的在公园里与大自然互动的活动把游客分类,再根据第四段“Across the 320 submissions, a pattern of categories the researchers call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important to visitors. (在这320份提交的作品中,一种被研究人员称为“自然语言”的分类模式开始出现。在对所有提交的内容进行编码后,有六个类别被认为对游客最重要)”可知,研究人员对参与者提交的内容进行了分类,以便在游客的总结中找到模式,并确定对游客最重要的自然体验。通过这样做,他们能够创造一种“自然语言”,帮助人们认识并参与对他们来说最满意和最有意义的活动。选项D准确地反映了这一目的。故选D。
10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段内容“Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a weekend hike in the park. Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break.
根据最后一段““We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen, we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn, a senior author of the study. (“我们正试图创造一种语言,帮助将人类与自然的互动带回我们的日常生活中。要做到这一点,我们还需要保护自然,这样我们才能与它互动,”该研究的资深作者彼得·卡恩说。)”可推断,彼得·卡恩认为在我们与大自然互动之前我们应该先要保护自然。故选B。

A 13. C 14. C 15. B

36. where
37. approaching
38. to encourage
39. an 40. was made
41. leaves 42. mixed
43. gradually
44. that 45. on
故填where。
tell sb. to do sth. 故填to encourage。
in an attempt to do... 故填an。
故填was made。
故填that。
故填on。

If not, then I’ll just keep on riding to wherever this train goes.” The two of them were now waiting for Smithville.

Now involved, the man stopped reading and also stared at the window. However, after a while, the boy’s face turned pale, seemingly feeling like sitting on pins and needles. The man noticed that and tried to comfort the boy. He said gently, “Don’t worry. Whatever happens, please remember that there is always light behind the clouds.” After hearing his words, the boy turned his head and looked at him. The man added, “I’m a father, too. Parents are always there and never let go of their children.” The boy nodded, eyes full of hope.
Paragraph 2:
A few moments later, the conductor came along and called out, “Next stop---Smithville.” The boy could not move. The man, however, looked as hard as he could. And then he saw it! He shouted so loud that all the people in the train turned around. “It’s there! Look! The tree is covered with yellow ribbons! Not just one there’s a whole bunch!” The father had every reason not to put up a yellow ribbon and yet he did.Only a father whose love is real could blanket the tree with yellow ribbons, each one of them proclaiming reconciliation.
