We live in a town with three beaches. There are two parts less than 10 minutes’ walk from home where neighborhood children gather to play. However, what my children want to do after school is pick up a screen — any screen — and stare at it for hours. They are not alone. Today’s children spend an average of four and a half hours a day looking at screens, split between watching television and using the Internet.
In the past few years, an increasing number of people and organisations have begun coming up with plans to counter this trend. A couple of years ago film-maker David Bond realised that his children, then aged five and three, were attached to screens to the point where he was able to say “chocolate” into his three-year-old son’s ear without getting a response. He realised that something needed to change, and, being a London media type, appointed himself “marketing director from Nature”. He documented his journey as he set about treating nature as a brand to be marketed to young people. The result was Project Wild Thing, a film which charts the birth of the World Network, a group of organisations with the common goal of getting children out into nature.
“Just five more minutes outdoors can make a difference,” David Bond says. “There is a lot of really interesting evidence which seems to be suggesting that if children are inspired up to the age of seven, then being outdoors will be on habit for life.” His own children have got into the habit of playing outside now: “We just send them out into the garden and tell them not to come back in for a while.”
Summer is upon us. There is an amazing world out there and it needs our children as much as they need it. Let us get them out and let them play.
4. What is the problem with the author’s children
A. They often annoy their neighbours. B. They are tired of doing their homework.
C. They have no friends to play with D. They stay in front of screens for too long.
5. How did David Bond advocate his idea
A. By making a documentary film. B. By organizing outdoor activities.
C. By advertising in London media. D. By creating a network of friends.
6. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “charts” in paragraph 2
A. records B. predicts C. delays D. confirms
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Let Children Have Fun B. Young Children Need More Free Time

Will the AI chatbots eat search engines’ lunch For more than 20 years, search engines have been the Internet’s front door. Google has dominated the field in most of the world. But nothing lasts forever, particularly in technology.
Just ask IBM, which once ruled business computing or Nokia, once the leader in mobile phones. Both fell behind because they didn’t follow big technological transitions. Now another tech innovation might announce a similar shift and a similar opportunity. ChatGPT has put itself on center stage, by letting people chat with an AI directly. ChatGPT can write essays in various styles, explain complex concepts, summarize texts and answer questions. And it can collect, process and combine knowledge from the web: for example, listing holiday spots that match certain criteria, or suggesting menus or schedules. If asked, it can explain its reasoning and provide details. Many things that people use search engines for today, in short, can be done better withchatbots.
Will ChatGPT help students cheat better Yes, but as with many other technology developments, it’s not a simple black and white situation. Decades ago, students could copy encyclopedia entries, and more recently, they’ve been able to search the Internet and explore into Wikipedia entries. ChatGPT offers new abilities for everything from helping with research to doing their homework for them. Many ChatGPT answers already sound like student essays. Ask the new artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT to write an essay about the cause of the American Civil War and you can watch it produce a persuasive term paper in a matter of seconds.
It can even pass a number of exams. It scored 60% on the United States Medical Licensing Examination, 70% on an exam for lawyers, 78% on New York state’s high school chemistry exam’s multiple-choice section, and ranked the 40th on the Law School Admission Test.
A high school teacher concluded ChatGPT already writes better than most students today. He’s torn between admiring ChatGPT’s potential usefulness and fearing its harm to human learning: “Is this moment more like the invention of the calculator, saving me from the boredom of long division, or more like the invention of the player piano, robbing us of what can be communicated only through human emotion ”
8. What is the reason why some tech companies fail to develop
A. The sharp rising market cost. B. The negative impact of local economy.
C. Their shift to other business fields. D. Their failure to keep pace with tech changes.
9. What is ChatGPT unable to do according to the text
A. Write various articles. B. Schedule a holiday trip.
C. Play the piano. D. Explain complex concepts.
10. What is the purpose of the percentages mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To explain a rule. B. To illustrate a fact.
C. To make a prediction. D. To clarify a concept.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards ChatGPT
A. Neutral. B. Positive. C. Critical. D. Ambiguous.
【答案】8 D 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据第二段中“Just ask IBM, which once ruled business computing or Nokia, once the leader in mobile phones. Both fell behind because they didn’t follow big technological transitions.”(只要问问曾经统治商业计算的IBM,或者曾经是移动电话领导者的诺基亚就知道了。
根据第二段中“ChatGPT can write essays in various styles, explain complex concepts, summarize texts and answer questions. And it can collect, process and combine knowledge from the web: for example, listing holiday spots that match certain criteria, or suggesting menus or schedules.”(ChatGPT可以写各种风格的文章,解释复杂的概念,总结文本和回答问题。
根据第四段“It can even pass a number of exams. It scored 60% on the United States Medical Licensing Examination, 70% on an exam for lawyers, 78% on New York state’s high school chemistry exam’s multiple-choice section, and ranked the 40th on the Law School Admission Test.”(它甚至可以通过一些考试。
根据最后一段最后一句“He’s torn between admiring ChatGPT’s potential usefulness and fearing its harm to human learning: “Is this moment more like the invention of the calculator, saving me from the boredom of long division, or more like the invention of the player piano, robbing us of what can be communicated only through human emotion ””(他在欣赏ChatGPT的潜在用途和担心它对人类学习的危害之间左右两难:“这一刻更像是计算器的发明,把我从长除法的无聊中拯救出来,还是更像是自动钢琴的发明,剥夺了我们只能通过人类情感交流的东西 ”)并结合上文对ChatGPT强大功能的具体介绍可知,作者一方面承认其强大的功能,另一方面又通过最后一段一位高中老师说的话,反思了ChatGPT的潜在危害,故作者的态度是不偏不倚的,是中立的(Neutral)。故选A项。
D
Many people believe that working to the maximum is the secret to success, but research has found that moderation(适度) also gets results on the job.
In a study led by Ellen Langer of Harvard University, researchers asked people to translate sentences into a new a made-up language. Subjects who practiced the language moderately beforehand made fewer errors than those who practiced extensively or not at all. High levels of knowledge can make people too attached to traditional ways of viewing problems across fields the arts, sciences, and politics. High conscientiousness is related to lower job performance, especially in simple jobs where it doesn’t pay to be a perfectionist.
How long we stay on the clock and how we spend that time are under careful examination in many workplaces. The young banker who eats lunch at his desk is probably seen as a go-getter, while his colleagues who chat over a relaxed conference-room meal get dirty looks from the corner office. “People from cultures that value relationships more than ours does are shocked by the thought of eating alone in front of a computer”, says Art Markman, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas, Austin. Social interaction has been shown to lift mood(情绪) and get people thinking in new directions and in ways that could help improve any post-lunch effort.
Markman also promotes off-task time. “Part of being a good thinker is experiencing things that are seemingly unrelated to what you are working on at the moment but give you fresh ideas about your work,” he says. “Also, there is a lot of research showing that a positive mood leads to higher levels of productivity and creativity. So, when people do things to increase their life satisfaction, they also make themselves more effective at work.”
12. What does Ellen Langer’s study show
A. It is worthwhile to be a perfectionist B. Translation makes people knowledgeable.
C. Simpler jobs require greater caution. D. Moderate effort produces the best result.
13. The underlined word “go-getter” in paragraph 3 refers to someone Who_______.
A. is good at handling pressure B. works hard to become successful
C. a has a natural talent for his job. D. gets on well with his co-workers
14. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. A good thinker is able to inspire other people.
B. Experience unrelated to your job is useless.
C. A cheerful mood helps make a creative mind.
D. Focusing on what you do raises productivity.
15. What does the text seem to advocate
A. Middle-of-the-road work habits. B. Balance between work and family.
C. Long-standing cultural traditions. D. Harmony in the work environment.
D 13. B 14. C 15. A
根据第一段“Many people believe that working to the maximum is the secret to success, but research has found that moderation(适度) also gets results on the job.(许多人认为工作到最大限度是成功的秘诀,但研究发现,适度的工作也会带来成果。)”和第二段中“In a study led by Ellen Langer of Harvard University, researchers asked people to translate sentences into a new a made-up language. Subjects who practiced the language moderately beforehand made fewer errors than those who practiced extensively or not at all.(在哈佛大学Ellen Langer领导的一项研究中,研究人员要求人们将句子翻译成一种新的虚构的语言。那些事先适度练习这门语言的受试者比那些全力练习或根本不练习的受试者犯的错误要少。)”可知,第一段提出主题,即适度的工作也会带来成果,接着第二段作者用Ellen Langer的研究来证明这一点,由此可推知,Ellen Langer的研究表明适度的努力会产生最好的结果。故选D。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词下文“while his colleagues who chat over a relaxed conference-room meal get dirty looks from the corner office.(而他那些在会议室吃饭时闲聊的同事们则在角落办公室里得到不屑的目光。)”
根据最后一段中“Also, there is a lot of research showing that a positive mood leads to higher levels of productivity and creativity.(此外,许多研究表明,积极的情绪能够提高生产力和创造力。 )”可知,积极的情绪能够提高生产力和创造力,由此可推知,愉快的心情有助于创造性思维。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“but research has found that moderation(适度) also gets results on the job.(但研究发现,适度的工作也会带来成果)”和第二段中“High conscientiousness is related to lower job performance, especially in simple jobs where it doesn’t pay to be a perfectionist.(高尽责性与低工作表现有关,尤其是在简单的工作中,追求完美并不值得。)” 故选A。

Ballet was a way of life in Kelly’s family. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a top college.Though Kelly’s mom always wanted her to follow in her sister’s footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet, her love for ballet had faded years before, and she was eager for a new challenge.
One day at school,as Kelly left the dance studio, she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers(拳击手)training inside the boxing ring. She was deeply impressed by how hard they hit and how fast they moved. In fact, she’d long been attracted to boxing.
She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack. On the familiar Oakwood High School Club Sign-up Sheet was the phrase:BOXING CLUB TRYOUT(选拔).That was what Kelly really wanted to do.She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep up with her sister, Kelly was ready to carve her own path.
The next day,she gathered her courage and told Serena about her new passion. At first, Serena didn’t understand and thought she was just joking. But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied, “You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet.Lean into your strength,Kelly.”
“But this is where I want to put my strength,” Kelly insisted,“and what exactly does ‘only for boys’mean, anyway Boxing is a sport for everyone!”
Gradually, touched by her determination and passion, Serena began to understand and support her.Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision,no matter what. But that was nothing compared to the preparations for the tryout, where she was required to show her footwork and punching(击打)abilities with other candidates. Boxing didn't come natural to Kelly, but she had made up her mind to stick with her choice.

The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then Kelly began her training for the tryout, keeping it a secret from her mom. Ballet was the Kelly way of life, so only her sister knew about boxing, and her mother would have stopped it. Because boxing didn't come naturally to Kelly, she just came to love it, so she often got knocked down during training and suffered. Now that you've made a choice, you can't give up. She has an unyielding spirit and must participate in the qualifiers.
The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted. Kelly was afraid to look at the published list for fear of losing out. Then a woman tapped her on the shoulder and told her she had been chosen. The voice sounded familiar to her. It was her mother. Her sister stood by smiling. Before she knew it, her mother told her she had known she had been boxing. Her mother very much support her. Now through the qualifiers, the family happily went home to celebrate. This really echoes the saying, "Interest is the best teacher".

There is an amazing world out there, and it needs our children as much as they need it. Let us get them out and let them play.
4. What is the problem with the author’s children
A. They often annoy their neighbours. B. They are tired of doing their homework.

A. Neutral. B. Positive. C. Critical. D. Ambiguous.
