Strangest Festivals around the World
Through the years, people have found many ways to celebrate important occasions in their lives. If you’re looking for an interesting and off-the-beaten-path tourist site, here are some most wonderful and unusual festivals from around the world.
Battle of the Orange, Ivrea, Italy
Each year in February, a battle takes place in this Italian town among thousands of tourists who throw oranges at each other during a 30-minute fight. The aim is to try and knock down other people by attacking them with oranges so that they cannot stand any longer.
Underwater Music Festival, Florida, America
Rather than being held at a typical concert hall, the Underwater Music Festival takes place on the seabed in July. Aiming to protect the sea lives, this unique custom features musicians playing music below water level. 100 feet deep in clear water, talented musicians wear diving equipment, performing free concerts for sea creatures and humans alike.
Rayne Frog (青蛙) Festival, Louisiana, America
The Rayne Frog Festival is held every fall in Rayne, Louisiana. The festival features all things frog: frog races, frog jumping, and the selection of the Frog Derby Queen. Besides music performance, it also holds a variety of frog-themed runs, fairs and other activities. If you are into frogs, there’s no other place you’d rather be in mid-November.
Night of the Radishes (萝卜), Oaxaca, Mexico
Night of the Radishes is a celebration that takes place every December 23rd in Oaxaca, Mexico. It features all kinds of radish sculptures. The tradition began when local radish growers began sculpting their works in order to attract customers. But radishes are just radishes after all, and the sculptures don’t last.

After I made it to the city center, I started to feel it might be easy for a foreigner to deal with the great size of Beijing. With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn’t go that far. Impressed with the cleanliness of the station, I bought a ticket and boarded the first subway that came along.
After a few minutes I asked in English a young man seated next to me where I should get off closest to the Friendship Hotel. Wearing a smart business suit and tie, he would surely speak English, wouldn’t he Unfortunately, he couldn’t understand me but seemed very friendly. I showed him the room card with all the information of the Friendship Hotel in Chinese characters . He looked at it, and then his eyes moved quickly to the carriage (车厢) subway map. Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand.
In Australia, raising fingers at someone is not usually nice, but this man wasn’t smiling. At the next station he showed me two fingers. Now in Australia, that’s really rude, but I got the message. When we stopped at the third station, he didn’t just point to the door, but got up, took me out of the train, and led me to the top of the stairs, and out onto the street. Then he stopped a taxi and told the driver where to take me.
All this came from a man who couldn’t speak my language, and I couldn’t speak his. I was now speechless, especially when he refused my offer of money. I felt a little embarrassed having even thought he would accept a tip.
This experience made it clear I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into misadventures.

Today’s grandparents are joining their grandchildren on social media, but the different generations’ online habits couldn’t be more different. In the UK the over-55s are joining Facebook in increasing numbers, meaning that they will soon be the site’s second biggest user group, with 3.5 million users aged 55-64 and 2.9 million over-65s.
Sheila, aged 59, says, “I joined to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts videos and photos of them. It’s a much better way to see what they’re doing than waiting for letters and photos in the post. That’s how we did it when I was a child, but I think I’m lucky I get to see so much more of their lives than my grandparents did.”
Interestingly, Sheila’s grandchildren are less likely to use Facebook themselves. Children under 17 in the UK are leaving the site—only 2.2 million users are under 17—but they’re not going far from their smartphones. Chloe, aged 15, even sleeps with her phone. “It’s my alarm clock so I have to,’ she says. “I look at it before I go to sleep and as soon as I wake up.”
Unlike her grandmother’s generation, Chloe’s age group is spending so much time on their phones at home that they are missing out on spending time with their friends in real life. Sheila, on the other hand, has made contact with old friends from school she hasn’t heard from in forty years. ”We use Facebook to arrange to meet all over the country,” she says. “It’s changed my social life completely.”
Parents have an important role to play if they want their kids to spend more time in real life. Peter, 38, who spends most of his time in front of a screen, is recently determined to set a better example to his kids. In the evening or at weekends, he would leave his smartphone home and take his kids out to nature.
28.What can we learn from Paragraph 1

B. Children spend more time with their grandparents.
C. More and more elderlies begin to use social media.
D. Social media have become more friendly to the elderly.
29.How does Sheila feel about social media
A. Worried. B. Satisfied. C. Excited. D. Disappointed.
30.What can be concluded from the passage
A. People tend to have less social life as they get older.
B. Young people are getting away from their smartphone.
C. More young people choose to meet their friends in person.
D. Social media actually help old people to meet their friends.
31.What’s the best title for this passage
A. Different Online Habits Across Generations
B. The Good Old Days Without Smartphones
C. The Next Generation of Social Media
D. The Use of Smartphones at School
D
People who are at your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they influence you on your decision or action, it’s called peer pressure. All of us, at some point in our lives, have had to deal with peer pressure.
Recent studies have shown that peer pressure might cause an upside to you. It can make you reflect on your actions and make changes to your ways to become a better one. Observing others working hard to reach their goals will definitely encourage you to make a great effort to achieve something positive. When a teen knows that his teammates are practicing hard to become better players then it will directly affect his own performance. He will put in twice the time and energy to raise the level of his game and ensure he has a place on the team.
Having a group that brings positive peer pressure can also help you pick up healthy habits that can shape both your personality and your future. For example, when a child knows that some of his friends regularly read storybooks, he may get into the habit of reading. Seeing that his friends exercise daily, even he may take up the habit.
Just as some influences can be positive, some can be negative too. Peer pressure sometimes can make a fall in your self-confidence. Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, or because they worry that others might make fun of them if they don’t go along with the group. The idea that “everyone’s doing it” can influence them to leave their better judgment behind. Besides, it is common for teenagers to think that nobody understands them and that the whole world is against them. The influence of peer pressure is such that it keeps them completely away from their family and friends who mean well. They just shut themselves off and fall into bad company.
It’s likely that you’ve experienced the impact of peer pressure in different areas, ranging from the clothes you wear to the music you listen to. Sometimes it can be hard to resist(抵抗) and you may feel forced to do something you’re uncomfortable with. So being aware of and carefully choosing the influence of peers that will lead to healthy and happy experiences is a lifelong process.
32.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. A quick reaction. B. A positive influence.
C. A serious challenge. D. A possible conflict
33.What can we learn from Paragraph 4 .
A. Peer pressure can get teenagers to become less self-confident
B. Peer pressure can provide a positive model for teammates
C. Peer pressure can get teenagers to make fun of their peers.
D. Peer pressure can help teenagers improve relationship with family members
34.What does the author advise us to do about peer pressure
A. Just follow the trends ranging from clothes to music.
B. Accept it all because it is hard to resist.
C. Stay clear-minded and choose the influence wisely.
D. Fit into a healthy and happy lifestyle.
35.Which section is the text probably taken from
A. Science B. History C. Opinion D. Entertainment

“Hey!”the voice called from behind me. “Are you a girl or a duck ” I ignored the comments because I knew they were from the mean girl, Betsy. I ran to my class, causing my slight limp (跛行) to become even more obvious. Already, I could see that things would be different here. At my old school, I had a group of friends to protect me. However, in this new school, I was on my own. I took my place in the first row of desks and I was grateful for alphabetic(字母的) seating. My last name came at the beginning of the alphabet and Betsy's last name came at the end of it. As the weeks went on, though, I made friends with two girls named Fran and Lisa who sat near me in class. Whenever Betsy made one of her comments, they would wave it off and tell me to ignore her.
Still, I hated that I didn't walk like everyone else. I didn't like not being able to run as fast or as straight as the other kids and I didn't like getting picked last for teams in gym class. Mostly, though, I really hated it when people like Betsy made negative remarks about how I walked.
One day, our teacher asked us to change seats. “My dear children,” our teacher spoke to us one morning, “you've been in the same seats for a full semester and you've become friendly with the students around you. Now it's time to change seats and make some new friends.” The class let out a collective moan (抱怨).As she assigned the new seating, Fran, Lisa and I looked at each other and waited for our names to be called. We didn't want to be separated. And we especially didn't want to sit anywhere near Betsy. Finally, Betsy sat directly behind me.
I knew this wasn't going to be good and I soon discovered I was right. Betsy often leaned into my back, “Quack, quack!” When I ignored her, she kicked my seat. When that didn't work, she poked (戳) me. This went on daily until one morning I simply refused to go to school. I told Mum what had happened at school.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右。2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Dear Philip,
I’m really sorry for not being able to meet up with you this Sunday morning as planned to polish the English speech draft.
Recently, I was given an unexpected opportunity to interview runners as a reporter for the upcoming 2023 Hangzhou Marathon. It’s a great honor for me, and I believe it will be a valuable experience for my future career. However, the interview is scheduled for the same time as our meeting, and I cannot reschedule it. I would appreciate it if you allow me to rearrange our meeting to next Sunday morning. If you are available that time, please let me know.
I apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写(满分25 分)
My mother sat me down and began to talk. “Look” she held my hand gently, “There will always be mean people like Betsy in this world. It is hard to change. But you can change the way you handle them. Have you ever heard of the saying, ‘Treat them with kindness?” I shook my head in confusion. “It's simple. Just show your kindness to the girl now and then. If she drops her pen, pick it up and hand it to her. Things like that. Just be nice to her.”
Then one day I did what my mother taught me and amazing things happened. Our teacher announced seriously that there would be an exam the next morning. As Betsy had difficulty in advanced literature, I offered to help her review. Betsy was surprised but grateful. She said shyly, “You're so nice. I truly regret making those rude remarks on you. Can we be friends?” I was glad that I had followed my mum's advice. It was just what I needed, and probably just what Betsy needed, too---treat others with kindness.
