W: Most young people like to enjoy playing on their smartphones in their spare time. But Li Ruxue is different. He often does some research in a forest and isolates himself from the outside world. In his college years, Li actively took part in field research with his teachers. After graduation, he joined a gibbon protection organization, where one of his major responsibilities was picking up gibbon feces. Through analyzing the DNA from the feces, researchers can protect them better. So over the past four and a half years, Li has followed gibbons and collected their feces for researchers. Though the work is a bit tiring, it’s meaningful for him. He has never regretted his choice or felt alone. Like Li, Chu Wenwen has also worked to protect animals. As her father is engaged in wildlife research, Chu has long been surrounded by wild animals. After graduating from university in 2017, she decided to follow in her father’s footsteps. She thinks she is lucky to live in such a great era when young people can fulfill their aspirations, and the country strongly supports the nature conservation.
Both Li Ruxue and Chu Wenwen set an example to our young generation. We should do our part like them and take part in the action of protecting animals.

由文章第一段“National Non-Fiction November is the perfect time to pick up a true life story(11 月是阅读真实生活故事的最佳时机)”和The Fossil Hunter部分中“Discover pioneering fossil hunter Mary Anning, who once searched the cliffs and seashores for rocks and shells. (探索化石猎人先驱玛丽·安宁,她曾在悬崖和海岸寻找岩石和贝壳。)”可知,这本书讲的是Mary Anning的故事;Nina部分中“Meet Eunice, who sang before she could talk, and journey with her from the piano chair of her childhood to the huge concert halls where she performed as Nina Simone. A year ago, I sold my car and replaced it with an e-bike. Writing about climate change, I knew I was doing something good for the planet. Passenger vehicles are responsible for much of our greenhouse-gas emissions (排放). An e-bike’s small battery means less electricity, fewer emissions and fewer resources. They are clearly better for the planet than cars.
I had viewed replacing my car as an unwise choice. Living in Colorado, e-biking would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. In my opinion, it was not going to be fun.
However, I quickly learned that, as the saying goes, there is no bad weather, only bad gear. It was wearing gloves, warm socks, and a ski jacket when riding that prevented me from feeling cold. And even though it was 90 degrees outside, I didn’t sweat, thanks to my bike’s pedal-assist system. Honestly sometimes I didn’t even pedal (踩踏板), I just used the throttle (油门), sat back, and enjoyed my ride.
Then the savings caught my eye. Considering car payments, insurance, and gas, a car-centered lifestyle is expensive. According to American Automobile Association, owning and driving a new car in America costs $10,728 a year. My e-bike, by comparison, costs $2,000. After counting in all costs, about $50,000 will be saved over the next five years.
The actual experience of riding to work has been equally surprising. Biking to work was not unpleasant-it was truly enjoyable. Not only did I arrive to work more satisfied for having spent the morning in fresh air rather than traffic, but also I cycled my bike after a busy day at work and rode home down a street covered with changing fall leaves. I felt more connected to the natural surroundings around me.
Of course, it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars completely. There’s no need to sell your car to reduce carbon emissions greatly. Making short trips on an e-bike instead of in a car would likely save money, cut emissions, and improve health and happiness.
24. The reason for the author to replace the car with an e-bike is
A. to save money. B. to build up strength.
C. to explore the nature. D. to protect the environment.
25. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 3
A. skill B. shelter C. kit D. system
26. What can we know about e-bike
A. It costs higher than a car. B. It offers a pleasant experience.
C. It makes no difference to humans. D. It can keep riders warm in winter.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards e-bike
A. Positive. B. Confused. C. Traditional. D. Curious.
D 25. C 26. B 27. A
根据文章第一段“A year ago, I sold my car and replaced it with an e-bike. Writing about climate change, I knew I was doing something good for the planet. Passenger vehicles are responsible for much of our greenhouse-gas emissions (排放). An e-bike’s small battery means less electricity, fewer emissions and fewer resources. They are clearly better for the planet than cars. (一年前,我卖掉了我汽车,换上了一辆电动自行车。写关于气候变化的文章,我知道我是在为地球做一件好事。乘用车是温室气体排放的主要来源。电动自行车的小电池意味着更少的电力、更少的排放和更少的资源。它们显然比汽车对地球更好。)”可知,作者这样做的原因是为了保护环境,保护地球,故本题选D。
【25题详解】
词义猜测题。根据文章第三段中“It was wearing gloves, warm socks, and a ski jacket when riding that prevented me from feeling cold.(骑行时戴手套,穿暖和的袜子和滑雪服,才使我不觉得冷。)” A. skill技能,B. shelter避难所,C. kit装备,D. system系统。
根据文章第五段“The actual experience of riding to work has been equally surprising. Biking to work was not unpleasant—it was truly enjoyable. (骑车上班的真实经历同样令人惊讶。骑自行车上班并不是不愉快,而是真正的享受。)可知,骑电动自行车给我提供了良好愉悦的体验,故本题选B。文章第四段中“According to American Automobile Association, owning and driving a new car in America costs $10,728 a year. My e-bike, by comparison, costs $2,000. After counting in all costs, about $50,000 will be saved over the next five years. (根据美国汽车协会的数据,在美国拥有和驾驶一辆新车每年要花费10728美元。相比之下,我的电动自行车要花2000美元。算上所有成本后,未来五年将节省约5万美元。)”可知,它的花费比汽车低,故排除A。第五段“The actual experience of riding to work has been equally surprising. (骑车上班的实际经历同样令人惊讶。骑自行车上班并不是不愉快,而是真正的享受。我不仅因为在新鲜空气中度过了早晨而不是在车流中度过而更加满意,而且在忙碌了一天的工作之后,我骑上自行车,沿着覆盖着落叶的街道骑车回家。我觉得自己与周围的自然环境更加亲近了。)”可知,第五段描写骑电动骑行车是很一段很精彩很享受的经历,所以它对人们是有影响的,故排除C。第三段中“It was wearing gloves, warm socks, and a ski jacket when riding that prevented me from feeling cold. (骑行时戴手套,穿暖和的袜子和滑雪服,才使我不觉得冷。)”可知,让作者暖和的是一系列装备,并不是电动自行车本身,故排除D。故选B。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是文章最后一段“Of course, it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars completely. There’s no need to sell your car to reduce carbon emissions greatly. Making short trips on an e-bike instead of in a car would likely save money, cut emissions, and improve health and happiness. (当然,期望电动自行车完全取代汽车是不现实的。没有必要为了大幅减少碳排放而卖掉你的车。骑电动自行车而不是开车短途旅行可能会省钱、减少排放、改善健康和幸福。)”可知,作者呼吁大家在短途出行中用电动自行车代替汽车,而且整篇文章描述了我在用电动自行车代替汽车之后的好的体验通过自己的亲身经历突出电动自行车的好处。可知,作者对于电动自行车的态度是支持的。故本题选A。
C
It’s funny, really: emotions are the very essence (本质) of being human, and yet we don’t devote much time to truly thinking about them. Most of us mistake the value of feelings or shy away from those with seemingly negative meanings. We don’t really consider what these feelings might be trying to tell us.
Emotions show up in all parts of our lives, but sometimes expressing them can come with a lot of shame. But when we refuse to face how we truly feel, we risk not recognizing the signs that our needs are not being met.
This special edition is devoted to deepening an all-around understanding of our emotional experience, from the powerful ways joy can help fight against burnout (倦怠), to the inspiration (启发) we can get from connecting with other generations.
Many of us will have first-hand experience of wanting to hide away from so-called negative emotions, but we want to stress the fact that there is no such thing! From our columnist Michelle Elman’s personal experience with survivor’s guilt (内疚), to dealing with guilt-inspiring situations, and reviewing our ideas of anger, there should be no shame in whatever it is you are feeling!
Every emotion has value and the ability to teach us something. Recognizing varieties of our moods allows us to appreciate different sides of life, and truly value all parts of the human experience. Without moments of joy, we couldn’t experience and appreciate the beauty of the world; without moments of sadness, we couldn’t grasp the limitless value of love and satisfaction.
So wherever you are on the emotional stage, know it won’t last forever, and there should be no shame or hiding. Allow yourself to feel it all.
As Yogi Berra so artfully put it: “Whatever you do, you should do it with feelings.”
At this special edition Happiful, creating a happier, healthier society is at the top of our mission. To find out more about us, visit /pledges.
28. What if we avoid facing our true feelings
A. We may meet with burnout.
B. We may feel ashamed all the time.

29. What can we learn from the special edition mentioned in the passage
A. secrets to our experiences. B. understanding of burnout.
C. strategies useful to our life. D. ways to communicate with others.
30. Which of the following opinions might Michelle Elman agree with
A. “I will never forgive myself.” B. “I am so ashamed. I got mad again.”
C. “You are crying What a fool!” D. “You are allowed to feel sad at this time.”
31. What is the purpose of this passage
A. To advertise a useful special edition.

Today, there are more humans on Earth than ever and nature is in freefall. In just 50 years, wildlife populations have dropped on average by 69 percent. In the same period, our population has doubled, and demand for non-living and living material from Earth has grown six times. The biggest contributors to biodiversity (生物多样性) loss are habitat destruction and over-development of species, both driven by completely unsustainable consumption (不可持续的消耗) and caused by increasing human numbers. It is important that we address this over-consumption, and that means thinking seriously the influence our species’ population growth is having on the breakdown of the natural world.
December’s biodiversity summit (峰会) in Canada didn’t meet the challenges we face. Only two of the 23 topics are intended to address consumption and speak of “greatly reducing overconsumption”. But the message is unclearly defined and unquantified (未被量化的), short of necessary facts for any real application. Given all the goals of the former biodiversity protection plan were missed, it is truly impossible to imagine that governments will gather the bravery to catch the chance.
In November last year, our population reached 8 billion and there are predictions that it will reach 10.4 billion in the 2080s. The goal of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity is for us to live “in harmony (和谐) with nature” by 2050. Let me make it clear: there is no doubt that the 1.7 billion more people predicted will make this greatly harder to achieve. However much we try to reduce our consumption and our influence, every plan and rule that moves us forward will have a gradually lower influence.
And let me say it again: it isn’t about any particular humans among those billions, this is about us as a species of resource-consuming organism.
We must now ensure governments deal with their tasks with great efforts instead of any short-sighted, short-term solutions. Tolerating (忍受) the cruel idea that economic growth is the answer to our problems, and totally ignoring unsustainable population growth, must end. Or we all die.
32. What’s the function for the first paragraph
A. To conduct a survey. B. To explore the reason.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To discuss a problem.
33. What can we learn from the summit in Canada
A. It is far from contenting the author. B. It has pointed the way to our future.
C. It clears up many people’s confusion. D. It helps deal with the consumption issues.
34. How does the author present his idea in paragraph 3
A. By giving examples. B. By showing data.
C. By making comparisons. D. By defining a concept.
35. The author advises us to ________.
A. Tolerate existing issues and wait.
B. Put population growth in second place.
C. Expect economic growth to solve the problem.
D. Let governments adopt effective solutions wisely.
C 33. A 34. B 35. D

When my son Ryan was six years old and in first grade, his teacher, Nancy, talked to his class about developing countries and how they could help people, particularly children, in other parts of the world. She explained that besides not having toys or enough food, some of them didn’t even have clean water. When Ryan heard people died because they didn’t have clean water, he was deeply affected. He came home that day and insisted he needed seventy dollars for class the next morning.
We thought it was very nice that he wanted to do something important, but we didn’t take it seriously. After all, Ryan was only six years old-and we just ignored it.
The next day, Ryan came home very upset because he hadn’t been able to take the seventy dollars to school. People were dying, and he insisted he needed that money.
Mark and I discussed it, then explained to Ryan that seventy dollars was a lot of money. If he was really interested in doing something, however, he could earn it by doing some chores.
He happily agreed and worked and worked and worked. With every two dollars he earned, he got to throw his money into a cookie tin. He never stopped working. He did chores for the neighbors and his grandparents, picked up brush after an ice storm-and it all went right into the cookie tin!
After four months, Ryan was nearing his goal. And we took him to a Canadian nonprofit organization providing clean water for people in developing countries.
However, Nicole, the chief director, thanked him and told him it would cost a lot more than $70 to build a well-in fact, it would cost $2,000.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Ryan wasn’t concerned and replied simply, “That’s okay. I’ll just do more chores!”.

News about what we were doing got out, and soon we were getting calls from the media.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ryan wasn’t concerned and replied simply, “That’s okay. I’ll just do more chores!”. Obviously, little did he know how much money $2000 means to him, and even to us. However, we were so glad that he was so determined to make a difference and decided to make joint efforts to realize his dream. The next days witnessed each family’s efforts. My son cleaned the floor for his uncle, my husband delivering packages, I babysitting for friends.
News about what we were doing got out, and soon we were getting calls from the media. With them interviewing us and posting the story online, people from all over were inspired to embrace his dream. We began to receive donations at least once a week. Finally, as a result of those donations, together, we all saw the amazing well that has allowed children in the developing world to have fresh, clean water every day. Ryan’s dream has changed the lives of so many people and Ryan has also shown me what the power of dreams can do.

Considering car payments insurance, and gas, a car-centered lifestyle is expensive.
D. Curious.

So, wherever you are on the emotional stage, know it won’t last forever, and there should be no shame or hiding.
C. We may think about negative emotions too much.
D. We may fail to know whether our needs are being satisfied.
B. To help cure annoying emotional disease.
C. To discuss how to understand our feelings.
D. To concentrate on the importance of emotion.
D

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Ryan wasn’t concerned and replied simply, “That’s okay. I’ll just do more chores!”.
