“I absolutely knew that I could be a physician,” says Patrice Harris.“But never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be president of the American Medical Association(AMA).” Harris is the first African American woman ever to be elected president of the AMA.
Harris grew up in a small town, and becoming a doctor felt like a dream for her.“Even though I knew I wanted to be a physician,” she said,“I had no idea how to get there.” Harris worked extremely hard to achieve her dream. She said,“In life, none of us get through without any setback. What’s important is to learn from these challenges.” Harris completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at West Virginia University. When Harris was in her third year of medical school, she decided to specialize in psychiatry(精神病学),the study and treatment of mental illnesses.“Some of my patients had what I thought were very interesting disorders,” she said.“And there was something new every day.”
In 2007,Harris won the Psychiatrist of the Year Award and widely recognized as a top doctor. But it is not awards, she said, but rather treating and caring for her patients that has motivated her throughout her career.“That interaction with my patients is very fulfilling, because every opportunity that I have to help a patient in need is so meaningful, and it shows me why I originally wanted to go into the profession of medicine,” Harris said.

A 293-million-mile journey of the NASA Perseverance rover(探测器) to Mars ended successfully on February 18,2021,with a picture-perfect landing inside the Jezero Crater. The car-sized,six-wheeled rover, nicknamed Percy,is the US space agency’s biggest and most advanced explorer to date. Its primary mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial(微生物的) life on Mars.
Landing on Mars is extremely tricky. The Red Planet’s gravitational(引力的) pull causes approaching spacecraft to go faster to high speeds, while its thin atmosphere—just 1 percent that of Earth’s—does little to help slow it down as it approaches the surface.
The scientists had to reduce Percy’s 12,000 mph speed to a safe landing speed of less than five mph—in just six and a half minutes. The target entry angle also had to be a precise 12 degrees—any steeper, and the spacecraft would burn up;any flatter, and it would get lost in space. It is no wonder that the final approach is often referred to as the “seven minutes of terror”.
Upon attaining a manageable speed,Percy briefly flew over the Martian surface to seek out the perfect landing spot. Its complex map-reading system rapidly scanned the area and matched it with maps in its database to find the best location.
“Perseverance is the smartest robot ever made, but confirming that microbial life once existed carries an unusually large burden of proof,” said Lori Glaze, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division.“While we’ll learn a lot with the great instruments we have aboard the rover,it may very well require the far more well-equipped laboratories and delicate instruments back here on Earth to tell us whether our samples (样本) carry evidence that Mars once harbored life.”

A.The speed reduction.
B.The atmosphere analysis.
C.The location search.
D.The time management.
9.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.Ways to find the precise entry angle.
B.Consequences of wrong entry degree.
C.Factors to survive “the seven minutes”.
D.Reasons for the necessity of speed reducing.
10.What does “it” refer to in paragraph 4
A.The spot.
B.The area.
C.The system.
D.The surface.

A.Instruments aboard the rover are not quite reliable.
B.Perseverance is able to collect enough evidence needed.
C.Man still has a long way to go to prove life was on Mars.
D.Samples of Mars will be returned soon to our labs on the Earth.

Human speech contains more than 2,000 different sounds, from the common “m”and “a” to the rare clicks of some southern African languages. But why are certain sounds more common than others A ground-breaking,five-year study shows that diet-related changes in human bite led to new speech sounds that are now found in half the world’s languages.
More than 30 years ago,the scholar Charles Hockett noted that speech sounds called labiodentals, such as “f” and “v”,were more common in the languages of societies that ate softer foods. Now a team of researchers led by Dami n Blasi at the University of Zurich,Switzerland, has found how and why this trend arose.
They discovered that the upper and lower front teeth of ancient human adults were aligned(对齐),making it hard to produce labiodentals, which are formed by touching the lower lip to the upper teeth.Later, our jaws changed to an overbite structure(结构),making it easier to produce such sounds.
The team showed that this change in bite was connected with the development of agriculture in the Neolithic period.Food became easier to chew at this point. The jawbone didn’t have to do as much work and so didn’t grow to be so large.
Analyses of a language database also confirmed that there was a global change in the sound of world languages after the Neolithic age, with the use of “f” and “v” increasing remarkably during the last few thousand years. These sounds are still not found in the languages of many hunter-gatherer people today.
This research overturns the popular view that all human speech sounds were present when human beings evolved around 300,000 years ago.“The set of speech sounds we use has not necessarily remained stable since the appearance of human beings, but rather the huge variety of speech sounds that we find today is the product of a complex interplay of things like biological change and cultural evolution,” said Steven Moran,a member of the research team.
12.Which aspect of the human speech sound does Dami n Blasi’s research focus on
A.Its variety.
B.Its distribution.
C.Its quantity.
D.Its development.
13.Why was it difficult for ancient human adults to produce labiodentals
A.They had fewer upper teeth than lower teeth.
B.They could not open and close their lips easily.
C.Their jaws were not conveniently structured.
D.Their lower front teeth were not large enough.
14.What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A.Supporting evidence for the research results.
B.Potential application of the research findings.
C.A further explanation of the research methods.
D.A reasonable doubt about the research process.
15.What does Steven Moran say about the set of human speech sounds
A.It is key to effective communication.
B.It contributes much to cultural diversity.
C.It is a complex and dynamic system.
D.It drives the evolution of human beings.

Four Ways to Make You a More Patient Person
We could all use a little more patience, especially in the fast-paced world we live in.Think about it for a minute. 1 We expect packages delivered the day we place the order. We expect immediate results in the gym.Maybe it is time we slow down and practice a little patience. Here are four ways to be the patient person you never thought you could be.
Make yourself wait.A study published in Psychological Science shows that waiting for things actually makes us happier in the long run.Start with something small like waiting a few extra minutes to drink that milkshake and then move on to something bigger. 2
Stop doing things that aren’t important. We all have things in our lives that take time away from what is important.Take a few minutes and evaluate your week.Look at your schedule from when you wake up to the time you go to sleep. 3 It’s time to learn to say no to those things that cause stress and make us impatient.
Be mindful of the things making you impatient. Most people have several tasks in their head, and they jump from thought to thought without taking the time to finish one task first. 4 This will help you slow down and focus on one task at a time.
5 Taking slow deep breaths can help calm the mind and body. This is the easiest way to help ease any impatient feelings you are experiencing.
A.Calm your mind and body.
B.Relax and take deep breaths.
C.The world works in a fast pace.
D.You will gain more patience as you practice.
E.We all want instant satisfaction and things without waiting.
F.Take out two or three things that you do that aren’t important but take time.
G.The best way to change it is to write down what makes you impatient.
