How does a brilliant teacher get that way The question of how they developed has as many answers as there are inspired instructors. One example is an original and charming woman who has become one of the best ever at taking disadvantaged students to a new level.
Jackson was born in Altoona. Her father was a construction worker. When she was in the eighth grade, her father died. Her principal,Mrs.Brown, said not to worry about schoolwork for a while. That upset her.Her father would not have wanted her to do anything but her best.He always said,“Don’t let your first failure be the reason for your next.”
Jackson was an accomplished shooting guard in basketball and a star sprinter on the track team, running the quarter-mile in 57 seconds. She thought she might become a sports broadcaster. She gave no thought to teaching until a friend took her to an introduction to a program, which placed novice instructors in schools full of low-income children.Jackson liked the idea of giving back,as well as the chance to have some of her student loans forgiven.
She is a big sports person, and that is how she connects with lots of kids. She couldn’t motivate children until she knew what was bothering or pleasing them.“Students learn from people who love them,” she said.“They will be motivated and inspired to learn if they know deep down that you care about them.” In class she gave basketball tickets to students who were doing their work.At weekly drawings they could win sticky notes, pencils or other small prizes.
She helped create after-school clubs.A tall student said to her,“I’m a baller.I heard you play ball.”There was a basketball league in Paterson, but the school didn’t have a team.Jackson started one with support from local business executives. The student,Essence Carson, went to Rutgers University, was a first-round draft(运动员选拔制) selection for the WNBA’s New York Liberty and now plays for the Connecticut Sun.

As energy costs rise across Europe, some people are taking an opportunity to head off to warmer climates in order to cut down on bills.Greece is one of a number of countries trying to draw visitors in for the winter—with a $20 million advertising campaign.
Famous for its sun, golden beaches and medieval city, the island of Rhodes in the south Aegean Sea is a magnet(磁铁)for northern Europeans.More than three million flock to the island every summer, but some also come in the winter.
In order to capitalise on the energy crisis, the Greek government launched a series of winter tourism campaigns aimed at attracting European visitors seeking an alternative to the bitter cold and high energy bills.Places like Santorini,Crete and Rhodes were high on the list,as temperatures there remain in the high teens.
However, the campaign to advertise Greece abroad hasn’t attracted as many visitors as expected.“The campaign from the ministry is in the right direction—I think they’re doing things right,”says Dionissis Tsiligiris, tourism marketing director for the Rodos Palace hotel and convention centre in Rhodes.“But when it comes to winter tourism,Spain will always be the first choice,”Tsiligiris continues.Hotels and tour operators there just have more exposure. So competing for winter tourism is very difficult,as it’s a smaller market.
While it’s true that fewer people travel abroad than in the summer, entering the winter market could seem quite easy when you have the two key ingredients—almost guaranteed sun and well-established tourist facilities. But what’s making it difficult, according to Ashley Quint, senior holiday designer at a UK travel agency,is the message the government is sending.“Tourist boards and local governments can over-complicate things sometimes and the message doesn’t necessarily come across. In this case, there needs to be a simple and clear message. In addition, broadening it out a little bit may be better, because we see very little here.”
It seems that making Greece a winter destination for travellers to enjoy and save might need more than just the attraction of warmer weather.
8.Why do some Europeans go to warmer countries for winter
A.To avoid energy expense.
B.To decrease the heating fee.
C.To enjoy sunshine and beaches.
D.To explore winter travel options.
9.What mainly results in the disappointing result of Greece’s campaign
A.Ministry’s poor marketing.
B.Operator’s limited exposure.
C.Tourists’ common preference.
D.Government’s inappropriate policies.
10.What should Greece’s campaign focus on according to Ashley Quint
A.Sending the message globally.
B.Getting ideas easily understood.
C.Beating the potential competitors.
D.Advertising key tourist resources.
11.What might be the best title for the passage
A.Greece Ready to Take Winter Tourist Market
B.Greece Confident to Win the Tourism Campaign
C.Greece Eager to Draw Winter Tourists to the Sun
D.Greece Determined to Be a Winter Tourist Destination

The new radio programme from Self-help expert Glennon Doyle unexpectedly disturbed me.In a session of We Can Do Hard Things, she focuses on boundaries and their importance to our mental happiness.I heartily agree with her, because saying a polite but firm “no” is one of the basics for a happy life.I was, however, interested when she raised the idea that perhaps,as well as learning when to confirm our boundaries,we also need to stretch them. When does a boundary become a cage that locks us away
Isn’t it always the case that just as you think you’ve got an area of life nailed;somebody comes along to show you that that’s not the case As I listened,I started to see boundaries that might cause more problems than they were solving.
There was the work boundary that said that unless a project fell exactly into my topics,I wouldn’t take it—which meant that I turned down work that was otherwise interesting and rewarding.
There was the boundary that said I wasn’t to buy anything until I’d reached my savings goal—which resulted in me having to restart my laptop 20 times a day.
And then there was a boundary around relationships that set out exactly how I should be treated and what I wanted in them.Helpful to some extent,it blocked me from allowing someone to express their love for me,even if it wasn’t quite what I had predicted.
Had I been doing boundaries wrong all the time Did I need to figure them all out again I’ve spent the past few weeks looking at the boundaries I’ve secretly put in place, and I’ve let myself lower some that have been my protection over the years. Then I’ve come to the conclusion that, when it comes to boundaries,I’m a beginner again, and that’s fine.In fact, being back at the beginning is a blessing because it means there are still lessons to be learnt and adventures to be had and that is something for which I can only be grateful.
12.What has really interested the author in Glennon Doyle’s programme
A.The importance of confirming our boundaries.
B.The benefits of boundaries to our happiness.
C.The urgency of maintaining our boundaries.
D.The necessity of reassessing our boundaries.
13.What can be concluded as to the author’s views on boundaries
A.We should favour savings goals over boundaries.
B.Boundaries tend to keep us from potential friends.
C.Boundaries are very likely to relieve boredom at work.
D.We should stick to boundaries despite inconvenience.
14.How did the author feel about boundaries after the adjustments
A.Relaxed. B.Depressed.
C.Pressured. D.Amused.
15.What is probably the best title for the passage
A.Just When You Think You’ve Got Things Sorted
B.Just Where You Believe There’s No Way Out
C.How Can We Live a Life Without Boundaries
D.How do We Become Victims of Boundaries
Ⅱ.七选五
Many hear endlessly how good exercise is for our health, but you might be surprised to know just how good. 1
It helps you breathe better.
Frequent exercise improves the volume of oxygen you can use in your body. This is what makes you fit and the benefits aren’t limited to sport. 2 Attending some professional courses can build core strength and improve shape, and so strengthen breathing muscles.
Physical activity enhances your mental health.
Doing something active releases “happy” brain chemicals that make you more positive. The more you do it,the better you’ll feel. But you do need to work up a bit of a sweat. If you’ve had a bad day, treat yourself to a little bit of exercise. 3
 4
The way your guts (内脏) feel often impacts on your mental and physical health.Walking, running and yoga strengthen abdominal (腹部的)muscles, increase the heart rate and encourage your muscles to move digestive waste through your body more efficiently and digest food more quickly.
Keeping active keeps you young.
There may not be an elixir (灵丹妙药) of youth just yet,but keeping fit comes close.Just 15 minutes of exercise a day for eight years can increase your lifespan by three years. The more you do,the longer you could live. 5 It can be low-intensity exercise—swimming,a long walk on a running machine at the gym,or a low-intensity workout via special APPs.
A.It aids your digestion.
B.It gives you a better appetite.
C.Increased muscle strength helps too.
D.Here are the benefits you can get from exercise.
E.This is because physical activity delays cell ageing.
F.People think this will catch our attention and inspire our action.
G.Power walking or rope skipping is a brilliant stress reliever.
