Lifesaving heart operation
When Tal Golesworthy was told he needed a lifesaving heart operation in 1993,he said no.Golesworthy has Marfan syndrome (马凡氏综合征).
Back in 1993,when he was living in the west of England, his doctor told him that the aorta(主动脉) in his heart was so enlarged that it would unavoidably burst unless he underwent a major operation.
“They talked through the options,” says Golesworthy,“but I was not interested. The operation really didn’t look attractive.” What he particularly didn’t like was having to be on blood thinners after the operation, something that would prevent blood clots (血栓) but presented its own risks:“I was riding motorbikes then, and skiing,so my whole lifestyle would have been affected.” By 2000,however,his condition had worsened.Realizing something had to be done,Golesworthy put his years of experience as a research and development engineer to good use.He decided he would fix himself.“Learning new stuff and developing new ideas, that was my job,” Golesworthy says.
The aorta,he thought, needed support on the outside. And wrapping something around the outside of the aorta would require a special operation. So Golesworthy subjected himself to 30 hours in an MRI scanner and used 3D printing to create a physical exact copy of the part of his heart.“Luckily,I’d done a lot of work with technical materials,” he says.
Strong determination coupled with an original yet practical solution won him the support of two leading surgeons and helped him raise the money to develop his idea.In May 2004,at the age of 47,he became the guinea pig for his own invention. The operation was a success.
4.Why did Tal Golesworthy refuse the operation at first
A.A better solution was on the way.

(2023·福建宁德重点中学高三上学期一模)
A 2020 study in the journal Science concluded that marine heat waves have increased more than 20-fold as a result of climate warming. The authors found that in the first decade after satellites began recording ocean temperatures (i.e.,after 1981),there were 27 large marine heat waves, with an average duration of 32 days and an average peak temperature anomaly of 8.5℉;in the 2010s,there were 172,which lasted 48 days on average with an average peak temperature almost 10℉ above normal.
Much remains unclear about marine heat waves. For example, explains Nicholas Bond, research scientist at the University of Washington and Washington’s state climatologist, there is the question of why so many persist for weeks or months.“There must be something else going on that helps maintain them,” he says.He notes that one explanation is that as the ocean surface warms,it radiates heat into the atmosphere that prevents cloud cover from forming, exposing the seawater to increased sunlight and further warming.
However, enough is known about marine heat waves for scientists to be gravely concerned about their potential impacts.Of special note is the fact that those impacts can last long after the heat waves have disappeared. After three years of the Blob, the waters of the northeastern Pacific began to cool in 2016;but years later, scientists are still determining the extent to which the region’s ecosystem is likely to return fully to its pre-Blob status.Similarly, notes Scannell, who is a data scientist with Jupiter Intelligence,Inc.,following the 2010—11 Western Australia event,“lots of kelp(巨藻) forests died, and it takes literally decades for those ecosystems to bounce back.”
Eric Oliver,a scientist from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia,Canada, expressed his own opinion about the potential impact of the heat waves in tropical waters.“I think that’s really a tough issue,” he says.Life in the tropics,he notes,is adapted to “quite a narrow range of temperatures. So that’s where things can get really messy. We can have complete shifts in tropical systems.”
8.What can we infer from the figures listed in paragraph 1
A.The problem of marine heat waves is becoming worse.
B.The satellites enable scientists to record ocean temperature precisely.
C.Climate change is the main cause of the marine heat waves.
D.Marine heat waves have been found by scientists for about 30 years.
9.What does the 2nd paragraph mainly talk about
A.Various factors that lead to marine heat waves.
B.The possible impacts of a warm ocean surface.
C.The possible reason why marine heat waves last long.
D.Scientists’ efforts in exploring the causes of heat waves.
10.What do we know about the impact of the marine heat waves
A.The impact will disappear shortly after the sea water cools.
B.It takes long before the ecosystem makes a complete recovery.
C.Scientists have known enough to restore the impact.
D.The northeastern Pacific and Western Australia are the worst cases.
11.What is Eric Oliver’s attitude towards the heat waves in tropic waters
A.Concerned. B.Indifferent.
C.Doubtful. D.Optimistic.

Rising sea levels and the potential impacts to huge coastal populations worldwide rank near the top of concerns when it comes to consequences of a worsening climate emergency. But a lesser-known danger poses an equal or arguably more urgent threat to millions around the world living at much higher altitudes:flooding from glacial lakes.
With average temperatures rising around the world in recent decades,a number of these lakes high above population centers in South America and Asia have become swollen and unstable as the reserves of snow and ice that feed them melt ever faster.
For the first time,an international team of researchers has quantified(量化) this threat. It reports that 15 million people are in the path of potential floods from these swollen bodies of water.“Understanding which areas face the greatest danger from glacial flooding will allow for more targeted and effective risk management actions, which in turn will help minimize loss of life and damage to infrastructure(基础设施) downstream,”said Rachel Carr, head of physical geography at Newcastle University.
In 1941,a glacial lake outburst flood,or GLOF,from Lake Palcacocha killed thousands in the town of Huaraz below and largely inspired the beginning of research into the phenomenon.Dams and other infrastructure were put in place to relieve the threat from the lake in the 1970s,but its volume is now over 30 times greater, requiring new improvements to safely drain and release water pressure.
Lead researcher Caroline Taylor says the researchers also found that understanding the danger requires more than just counting lakes and measuring their volume.“Instead,it is the number of people, their distance to a glacial lake and importantly, their ability to cope with a flood that determines the potential danger from a GLOF event.”
In recent years,a warning system was set up at Lake Palcacocha that could give residents of Huaraz enough time to get out of the way of an incoming flood.Meanwhile, other threatened villages with no such alert system continue to rely on hope and luck.
12.Why does the author mention rising sea levels in the first paragraph
A.To make a comparison.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To provide an example.
D.To support his argument.
13.What can we learn about GLOF from the passage
A.Effective risk management will rid people of the danger.
B.An international team first figured out the dangerous areas.
C.Threatened villagers without warning systems can easily get hurt.
D.A GLOF in the 1970s determined the start of study into the danger.
14.Which factor decides the potential danger according to Caroline Taylor
A.The number of the unstable lakes.
B.The volume of the unstable lakes.
C.The ability to handle a flood.
D.The degree of climate change.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Glacial Lakes:a Potential Danger.
B.GLOF:an Overlooked Threat.
C.Climate Change:the Cause of GLOF.
D.Warning Systems:a Solution to GLOF.

Shannan Hearne’s oldest dream was to own a ranch (牧场).In February 2020,her dream finally came true when she opened the gates of Sun and Moon Ranch. 1
With large areas of grasslands and plenty of sunshine and fresh air, there was no safer way for frightened neighbours to get out of the house. 2 Sure, you can sign up for riding lessons or board your horse. But you can also drop by to play with the chickens, goats, and dogs,or join the younger ranchers playing on the big pile of freshly dug dirt.Hearne now saw the ranch as something more than a business—it would be a place the community could call home.
3 Many of them came not just for free cookouts, but for the chance to find peace of mind.“I had a vision for the space able to help cure those in need,” says Hearne. One of those people, now 15,was born without fingers on one hand. His grandmother brought him to Sun and Moon for riding lessons.Learning to control a horse with one hand helped him better manage his disability, and he grew closer to his grandmother over their shared love of horses.“ 4 And I believe this is especially true for children or anyone who struggles with any sort of psychological issues,” Hearne says.
Another boy became selectively silent because of his autism(自闭症). 5 Taking the reins(缰绳),literally, helped him do so in his daily life too.“I could see how the empowerment of riding was helping him feel once again in control of the world around him,”says Hearne.
A.The ranch,Hearne realised,should be for everybody.
B.As the pandemic deepened, locals began to gather there.
C.Soon Hearne’s dream began to grow into something bigger.
D.Locals desired to put up a tent there when they felt worn out.
E.Lesson by lesson,Hearne watched him slowly come out of his own world.
F.He went from not answering questions to literally talking our ears off.
G.There is something empowering about controlling a thousand-pound animal.
