It is a bright cold day in April and Paul Blachut is busy as usual. From behind the bar of a restaurant, he has a good view of the river. He can see that, along the shore, many visitors are cooling their feet in the river.
Among those are a mother and her two teenage daughters. They’re standing on the edge of the riverbank, playing with an inflatable (充气的) tube when, suddenly, the girls lose their footing and are caught in the river’s current. It all happens so fast. The girls desperately grab on to the tube, which their mother is sitting in, dragging her into the river, too. Now all three are being carried away by the fast current.
A bystander races to the restaurant and shouted for help. Despite having no lifesaving training, Blachut rushes to the riverbank, quickly pulling off his T-shirt. Then he jumps into the river. He doesn’t care about the cold; all he can think about is saving the women.
As Blachut gets closer to them, he can tell that the mother seems to be in the most trouble; her head is now submerged. He recalls how a lifeguard saves people in a movie so he tries this, but in vain. Without hesitation, Blachut dives under the drowning woman, pushing her upward and using that momentum (冲力) to push her toward the shore. Then he dives into the current again, swims quickly downstream and manages to get hold of one of the teenagers, and get her out in the same way he did her mother. He is out of strength and luckily, the girl’s sister is helped out by someone else.
Several onlookers express their admiration for Blachut following the incident, but he is modest about his role. “The whole rescue only took two or three minutes” he says today, adding that he is happy to have received high praise from his boss for his courage. Indeed, it was a job very well done.
4. What might Blachut be
A. A visitor. B. A waiter. C. The boss. D. A lifeguard.
5. What happens to the mother of two teenagers
A. She loses her footing while playing. B. She is dragged into the river by accident.
C. She jumps into the river to save her daughters. D. She loses control of the tube and flows with it.

C. The slow speed of the river current. D. Blachut’s ability to make quick decisions.
7. In which section of a newspaper may the text appear
A. Health. B. Travel. C. Inspiration. D. Entertainment.

“With the passing of Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, China and the world have lost one greatest agricultural scientists,” Kenneth Quinn, president of the World Food Prize Foundation, said. Quinn, also vice chairman of the Yuan Longping International Rice Development Forum, shared his memory of the “father of hybrid rice” in an interview with Xinhua on Sunday.
Quinn first met Yuan in October 2004, when Yuan traveled to Des Moines in the U.S. state of Iowa to receive the World Food Prize. As they walked out of the airport , Quinn received a call and stepped aside to speak. When he turned back a minute or two later, he lost Yuan. “I had never before ‘lost’ a laureate(贵人),” he said. After a desperate search, he found Professor Yuan surrounded by a group of smiling graduate students from Iowa State University who so admired him that they wanted to take him off for a meal and conversation.
Quinn admired Yuan as a teacher. “He always had time to answer questions and speak with young scientists and students. The American high school students we sent to his research center each year always returned filled with knowledge and a deep desire to learn more.”
In Quinn’s eyes, Yuan was incredibly humble, never seeking fame, and focused only on hard work and results that could help lift people out of poverty. With a ‘down to earth’ attitude, Yuan greatly reduced hunger and provided farmers with surplus income through his discovery of hybrid rice.
Learning of Yuan’s passing away on Saturday, Quinn issued a statement to send his deepest sympathy to Yuan’s family and colleagues in China, as well as his admirers across the world. “Professor Yuan Longping, who was truly beloved in his country and by all of us who knew him, will be greatly missed. His legacy will provide inspiration to generations far into the future, in China and across the world,” Quinn said in the statement.
8. How did Kenneth Quinn feel when he found Yuan in a group of students
A. Confused. B. Amazed. C. Annoyed. D. Frightened.
9. How did Yuan Longping deal with young people
A. He cared about the development of the youth.
B. He sent young students abroad for further study.
C. He was too busy to answer the students’ question.
D. He was generous to help young people out of trouble.
10. What does the words “down to earth” mean in paragraph 4
A. Realistic . B. Stubborn C. Flexible D. Critical
11. What is the purpose of the text
A. To introduce the “father of hybrid rice”.
B. To share the stories of Yuan Longping.
C. To remember Professor Yuan Longping
D. To inspire the young to become a pioneer.

Jason M. Allen was almost too nervous to enter his first art competition. Now, his award-winning image is stirring debates about whether art can be generated by a computer, and what, exactly, it means to be an artist.
In August 2022, Allen, a 39-year-old game designer who lives in Pueblo West, Colorado, won first place in the “digital arts/digitally-operated photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. His winning image, titled Théatre D’opéra Spatial, was made with Midjourney—an artificial intelligence system that can produce detailed images when fed written prompts (提示).
Allen’s winning image looks like a bright cross between a classic and modern painting. It’s one of three such images he entered in the competition. Allen posted excitedly about his win on Midjourney’s Discord server on August 25, along with pictures of his three entries; it spread quickly on Twitter days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen’s win because of his use of AI to create the image. “He just ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’,” one Twitter user wrote. “We’re watching the death of art unfold before our eyes.”
However, to get the final three images he entered in the competition, Allen said, he took over 80 hours. First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in nice dresses and space helmets. Over time, with slight adjustments to his written prompts, he created 900 repeating processes of what led to his final three images. He gave the final touch to those three images in Photoshop. Then he ran the images through another software program called Gigapixel AI that can improve resolution (分辨率) and had the images printed at a local print shop.
Allen is glad that the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is getting so much attention. “Rather than hating the technology or the people behind it, we need to recognize it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said.
12. What do we know about Theatre D’opera Spatial
A. Its beauty is widely accepted. B. Its creation is an easy process.
C. It shows the death of traditional art. D. It has caused a lot of arguments.
13 What did Allen do to create his entries
A. He searched for smart written prompts. B. He edited his final images in Photoshop.
C. He fed Midjourney with famous paintings. D. He developed the software named Gigapixel.
14. What is Allen’s attitude to the debate over Al-created art
A. Worried. B. Uncaring. C. Positive. D. Annoyed.
15. What might be the best title for the text
A. AI Beats Out Human Artists in the Art Field
B. AI Won an Art Contest and Artists Are Angry
C. An Artist Wins State Fair Art Contest and Laughs
D. The Artist From Pueblo West Is Defending His Work.

The boy sat on his chair, with his hand above the keyboard. He thought about what to write.
He recalled that the competition deadline was merely a week away. But he still had not even started on his piece. He looked at the brochure again. “WRITING COMPETITION!” the title read. His mom had encouraged him to enter the writing competition, and now he was taking it on as his personal task for the holidays.
As the boy reflected on his previous writing efforts, he realized how hopeless his task of winning was. Every story he ever wrote was based on other stories. He had little imagination, and unfortunately, imagination was the key to writing.
Suddenly, he had a brainwave. This time, he came up with an original and imaginative story.
The words shot towards him like a storm of leaves. Words were coming easily, flowing through him, faster than he could type. He typed faster than he ever had before. He continued to type, amazed at how easy writing this story was. The boy could not stop writing. He looked at the word count and saw the number “248” staring right back at him. He was not even halfway yet.
Then he heard the call of his mother saying time for bed. He continued writing the piece, ignoring her. He had to make up for the time he had lost thinking about a topic to write. Finally, he finished. The word count now read “498”.
“Perfect,” he thought, “just under the word limit.” He knew this was the story that would win.
He went onto Google and searched for the competition. He found the page but there was no “Enter” button.
Confused, he then re-read the page again. It read COMPETITION CLOSED.
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

13. What did Allen do to create his entries
D 13. B 14. C 15. B
根据第三段“it spread quickly on Twitter days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen’s win because of his use of AI to create the image. “He just ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’,” one Twitter user wrote. “We’re watching the death of art unfold before our eyes.”(几天后,这张照片在推特上迅速传播,许多艺术家对艾伦的获奖感到愤怒,因为他使用了人工智能来创作这张图像。一位推特用户写道:“他只是‘按了几个按钮就做成了一件数字艺术品’。”“我们正在目睹艺术的死亡在我们眼前展开。”)”可推断,《太空歌剧院》这部AI作品引起了许多争论。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“He gave the final touch to those three images in Photoshop.

所以“AI Won an Art Contest and Artists Are Angry(AI赢得了艺术比赛,惹怒人类艺术家)”作为文章标题最为合适。

根据前文“Smiling is not laughing.(微笑不是大笑)”以及后文“When you smile, happy changes begin to take place naturally, both internally and externally.(当你微笑时,快乐的变化开始自然发生,无论是内在还是外在)”可知,空处是一个过渡句,起到连接前后文的作用,根据后文句意,可知是在讲微笑的好处,所以B项“It has a lot of benefits.(它有很多好处)”符合文意。故选B项。
根据本段首句“Learn to laugh at yourself.(学会自嘲)”可知,本段主要讲述不要对自己太严厉,再根据前文“Most of us take ourselves too seriously.(我们大多数人都太把自己当回事了)”以及后文“Learning to laugh at yourself takes some of the pressure off.(学会自嘲可以减轻一些压力)”可知,空处应该是对前句的进一步解释,所以G项“So our ability to find the humor in difficult situations can be limited.(所以我们在困境中找到幽默的能力是有限的)”符合文意。
根据前文“Share stories from the past. Do you remember one time in high school that you and your best friend wore false hair and matching clothes around your neighborhood Or, how about when your best friend sat on a painted bench by accident (分享过去的故事。你还记得高中的时候,你和你最好的朋友戴着假发,穿着情侣装在附近闲逛吗 或者,当你最好的朋友不小心坐在一张彩绘的长椅上 )”可知,E项“These reminders can make us feel silly and childlike.(这些提醒会让我们觉得自己又傻又幼稚)”可知是对前文的总结。故选E项。
【19题详解】
根据前文“When you try something new — whether it’s to draw or learn to roller skate — your original attempts will likely be clumsy and even ridiculous.(当你尝试新事物时——无论是画画还是学溜冰——你最初的尝试很可能是笨拙的,甚至是荒谬的)”以及后文“So taking up something new is likely to result in laughs.(所以学习新事物很可能会带来笑声)”可知,空处应该是一个过渡句,所以A项“That is funny.(这很有趣)”中that代指前文提到的最初的尝试的事,符合文意。故选A项。
分析设空,空处位于段首,应该是本段的中心句,是对本段的高度总结,根据后文“We are heavily influenced by the people we are with, so by hanging out with funny people, we can add more laughter into our days. That positive and silly energy will immediately rub off on us and it can cause us to want to feel happier and sillier throughout our days.(和我们在一起的人对我们的影响很大,所以和有趣的人一起出去玩,我们可以给我们的生活增添更多的笑声。这种积极和愚蠢的能量会立即影响到我们,让我们每天都想要更快乐、更傻)”可知本段主要讲我们身边的人,所以D项“Surround yourself with funny people.(和有趣的人在一起)”符合文意。故选D项。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
Paragraph 1:
After a few seconds, the boy eagerly checked the deadline of the COMPETITION on the website.

Paragraph 2:
His mother came up and comforted him.

Possible version 1:
After a few seconds, the boy eagerly checked the deadline of the COMPETITION on the website. Hardly had he opened the webpage when the capitalized letters COMPETITION CLOSED leapt into his eyes again. How could that be The deadline was a week away. “No!!!” silent screams exploded inside him. He rubbed his eyes, got closer to the screen and fixed his eyes on the letters. The Cruel capitalized letters just stood out as if naughtily winking at him. Unwilling though he was, he was forced to accept the irreversible fact that the competition had closed. Noticing mom leaning against his room door gazing at him with affection, he couldn’t fight back tears of grievance, bursting out crying loudly.
His mother came up and comforted him. “Dear, it’s OK. You’ve written an award-winning story which is original and imaginative. That’s the biggest gain in the process.” mom said gently, patting him on the shoulder. Mom’s heartwarming comfort dispersed his shame, but still he regretted, “Mom, I should have started earlier and met the deadline! All my efforts have gone to waste.” As he recollected the struggle in choosing the topic and writing the imaginative story, mom wiped his tears, ruffled his hair and asked him to go to bed. Tossing and turning in bed, he was drawn to the fact that less procrastination, more satisfaction.
Possible version 2:
After a few seconds, the boy eagerly checked the deadline of the COMPETITION on the website. The day before yesterday! He could barely believe his eyes. Great sorrow overwhelmed him so suddenly that he bent over the keyboard with tears rolling down his face and his heart sinking. How could he make such a huge mistake Reflecting on his passing spare time of the holidays, he suddenly realized it was his procrastination and carelessness that led to his failure in catching the deadline. Now he had no chance to enter the competition despite his great desire to win. Lost in deep regret, he couldn’t help bursting into tears.
His mother came up and comforted him. “You missed the opportunity, but more opportunities are coming in your later life. What you should do is draw a lesson from the incident.” The boy straightened his body, stared into his mother’s eyes, and sobbed that he was so sorry. If only he had started earlier and stayed focused! If only he had taken it more seriously! “Mom, under no circumstances will I waste my time or procrastinate my work till the next day.” the boy promised in a trembling but determined voice. “It is gratifying that you know what to do. Do remember to plan ahead and take action as planned.” his mother added, her face beaming with satisfaction.
