Over the last century, engineers all over the world have made efforts to achieve great success in bridge design.
Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge
No bridge is as long as the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in the world. The164.8-kilometre-long bridge built in 2011 in China operates as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The trip from Ningbo to Jiaxi ng that previously took 4. 5 hours has been reduced to two thanks to this bridge.
Rio-Niterói Bridge
Completed in 1974, the Rio-Niterói Bridge in Brazil is the second-longest bridge in all of Latin America connecting the cities of Rio and Niterói across the Guanabara Bay. The Rio-Niterói Bridge is technically known as a “box-girder (箱形梁)” bridge, made of special concrete. It receives an astonishing 140,000 (or more) vehicles (车辆) per day, making it better known in the world.
Hartland Covered Bridge
The Hartland Covered Bridge is the world’s longest covered bridge. The 1,282-foot-long bridge was opened in 1901 and has been on Canada’s list of National Historic Sites since 1980. Although it was at first built without a roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge
The newly-built Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China was named “world’s longest bridge over water” by Guinness Book of World Records in 2011, a title previously held by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. What a day! I started at my new school this morning and had the best time. I made lots of new friends and really liked my teachers. I was nervous(紧张的)the night before, but I had no reason to be. Everyone was so friendly and polite. They made me feel at ease. It was like I’d been at the school for a hundred years!
The day started very early at 7:00 a.m. I had my breakfast downstairs with my mom. She could tell that I was very nervous. Mom kept asking me what was wrong. She told me I had nothing to worry about and that everyone was going to love me. If they didn’t love me, mom said to send them her way for a good talking to. I couldn’t stop laughing.
My mom dropped me off at the school gate about five minutes before the bell. A little blonde(金黄色的)girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving(招手)at me. She ran over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight away. We spent all morning together and began to talk to another girl called Stacey. The three of us sat together in class all day and we even made our way home together! It went so quickly. Our teacher told us that tomorrow we would really start learning and developing new skills.

My greatest regret in life is that I failed to tell my superb teachers how much they contributed to my early education.
Ruth Hammerman taught English to the eighth-graders. She was the first to show me the rules of what Evelyn Waugh called our “rich and delicate language.” She was a no-nonsense instructor. Unlike common teachers, she diagramed (用图表展示) sentences so we could know the grammar rules. She never seemed to be tired of the simple pleasures of sharing her learning.
Under her influence, I had the strong belief that language needs to be well-spoken and properly written. Yet over the years I never made the effort to find her and to express my thankfulness for what she did for me. Two years after being in her class, I began the study of Latin and French, and the foundation (基础) she provided in English grammar served me well. Sadly, I never looked back.
In high school I took advanced French in a class taught by Richard Miller, the finest teacher I have ever experienced at any level. Mr. Miller brought to his subject a surprisingly deep understanding and new analysis (分析). Reading “Phèdre”, Racine’s classic play, he asked us to note there were 1,654 lines in it, and then pointed out the care Racine devoted to structure. Years later I made the same point — giving Mr. Miller credit — in a college French class, and my professor was surprised by my understanding of the play. Mr. Miller taught us to enjoy literature with particular points of view. Yet I never made the effort in later years to tell him what he meant to me.
Mr. Miller is certainly long dead. If she is alive, Miss Hammerman would likely be in her 90s. In preparing this article, I tried to find her but was unsuccessful.
I am certain my act is common. People often forget to express love and thankfulness to their teachers. I ought to have told Miss Hammerman and Mr. Miller how much they did for me. I suppose they knew their work was effective because they believed in what they were doing. Now I appreciate how special they were.
28. What is the most beneficial part to the author in Miss Hammerman’s class
A. Grammar. B. Writing. C. Speaking. D. Reading.
29. What is special about Mr. Miller’s French class
A. He asked students to count lines.
B. He stressed the importance of play.
C. He analyzed literature in a new way.
D. He showed great devotion to students.
30. What does the underlined phrase “my act” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Preparing the article. B. Looking for the teachers.
C. Failing to thank teachers. D. Copying teachers’ points.
31. What best describes the two teachers according to the text
A. Creative. B. Frank. C. Humorous. D. Strict.

Celebrated on June16th, World Sea Turtle Day is a day dedicated to one of the world’s oldest and most fascinating creatures. Unfortunately, this is also a day to remind everyone of the sea turtle’s endangered status.
Sea turtles have been around since the time of dinosaurs. They typically live to between 30 and 50 years of age, spending most of their lives at sea. Part of the reptile(爬行动物) family, sea turtles can hold their breath for up to five hours. This comes in handy since some species can dive as deep as 1,000 meters below the water’s surface before needing to come up for air. Sea turtles also like to get around, often migrating very long distances. One species can migrate over 12,000 km from nesting beaches in Japan all the way to feeding grounds near Mexico.
Female sea turtles return to the beach they hatched on to nest. Some species lay up to 250 eggs in a single nest, and each egg takes around 60 days to incubate(孵化). However, it’s estimated that only one in a thousand baby turtles can survive to adulthood.
Although it is worth having a day to celebrate these magnificent animals, World Sea Turtle Day also has a more serious purpose: to raise awareness of their difficult situation. Sea turtles are threatened with extinction. Plastic trash is a big problem because the turtles often mistake bags and other plastic items for food like jellyfish. In fact, half of all sea turtles have consumed plastic at some time in their lives.
Rising global temperature is another threat facing turtles. Turtle eggs that lie on warm sand are more likely to result in female turtles, which affects the animal’s diversity. Also, trash-covered beaches can make it hard for baby turtles to reach the sea.
However you want to celebrate World Sea Turtle Day, take some time to spread the word about what we can do to protect these ancient animals. Reducing the amount of plastic we use is just one small way we can help make sure sea turtles stick around for another 100 million years.
32. Which of the following best explains “comes in handy” underlined in Paragraph 2
A. is useful B. is interesting C. is close D. is difficult
33.What can we infer from the whole passage
A. Turtles are a species which hates going around.
B. Turtles’ rate of survival is low though they are productive.
C. Turtles came into being long after the extinction of dinosaurs.
D. Turtles, belonging to reptile family, spend most of their lives on land.
34. According to the passage, which of the following is not the problem sea turtles are facing
A. Turtle eggs lying on warm sand tend to result in female turtles.
B. Sea turtles often mistake plastic bags and other plastic items for food.
C. Sea turtles are captured by fishermen for food or for other purposes.
D. Baby turtles will have difficulty in reaching the sea when they are on trash-covered beaches.
35. What’ s the main idea of the passage
A. The factors of causing sea turtles to die out.
B. Raising the awareness of protecting sea turtles.
C. A brief introduction of sea turtles’ living habits.
D. How sea turtles lay eggs.

The MP3 has become a new fashion on campus. I had long dreamed of owning a MP3. The more MP3 owners were on campus, the stronger my desire (渴望) became. Finally, during one of my monthly visits home, I begged my parents to let me buy one, “Dad, Mom, I ... I want to buy a MP3 ... , the one for …”
I swallowed (吞咽) the rest of my words. Did I really need to explain what a MP3 was Surely everybody knew!
At first there was no response from my parents. But my little brother replied eagerly, “Me too!”
Then finally my dad spoke, “What! What is it for This little stuff breaks down soon after you get it! It’s an absolutely useless expense (花费) …”
Then, I had an idea. When the summer vacation came, I lied to my parents that I couldn’t stay at home, because the school had supplementary (附加的) programs. As a result, I earned my money for a new MP3 through my part-time job.
I was at home the night before my new school when Mom came into my room. She sat on my bed, and patted me on the shoulder. Then she handed me a small box. “Take this. Don’t tell your father ... Now, study hard, okay ” she said softly.
“Mom, how did you ... ” I asked.
“It’s from my own savings. Your father doesn’t know.” I sat alone for a long time with my new MP3, weeping (哭泣) silently.
When I went back to school, I decided to give up my part-time job so that I could study harder for my parents, for my dream. My motivation (动机) to study has never been so strong.

【答案】 Protect Endangered Animals!
Nowadays, a number of animals are in danger of dying out.The reason for this is that many people hunt them for their furs and skins to make profits. Besides, the habitats of the animals are being destroyed, making their population decrease rapidly.
As students, we should prevent people from killing them. What’s more, we mustn’t buy things made of these endangered animals. As the saying goes,“No buying, no killing.”
Only by living in harmony with animals can the earth become a good place to live on.

One afternoon, I was in my dorm when a classmate told me that my father was waiting for me downstairs. I rushed out of the door, ran downstairs anxiously, and saw my father standing there. At the sight of me, he managed an embarrassed smile and handed me a box, saying, “Son, I bought this for you since I overheard that it’s an efficient device for study. You will treasure it and use it for a good purpose, won’t you …” Swallowing the rest words, he just turned around and left for work hurriedly. Seeing him off, I dragged my legs to my dorm with the small box in hand.
I sat down and unwrapped the box. Gasping in astonishment, I found a totally brand new MP3 inside. It was neatly packed and the price tag was still attached. I gazed at it for a while, tears in eyes. The tired faces and weathered hands of my parents appeared before my eyes. How could I repay them After putting the MP3 away carefully, I headed for the classroom determinedly. I knew no matter what challenges I met, my parents would always be there for me with their deep love and wholehearted support. I also knew the progress I made in my study was the best present for them.
