Unit 3 Teenage problems
单元话题阅读理解练习
(2023·江苏扬州 · 统考二模)Born in the 2000s, what do you think of your generation Young, creative,
connected, global smart, maybe good-looking But what do other people think about your generation
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the phone than the world around you. They see you as the “face-down generation” and wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too
busy texting and taking selfies (自拍) to become successful in real life or “IRL”, as you would say
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoiled and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to do everything
for them. So today’s young people seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people volunteer to serve their communities than ever. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to
school.
So if you are one of them born in the 2000s, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking
up for the face-down generation.

D .Because they are not confident and feel shamed with themselves.
3 .In the writer’s eyes, today’steenagers .
A .are not creative because of the educational problem.
B .are willing to take part in many social activities.
C .are smarter and more good-looking than their parents.
D .are more successful and creative than their parents.

B .Mobile phones are harmful to teenagers’ growth and development.
C .Teenagers don’t need to change themselves to meet adults’ standards.

(2022·江苏苏州 · 校考一模)When you grow up, you have more responsibilities and also more freedom to spend time with other people. Though you may feel ready to make your own decisions about where and when to go, your parents will put limits on you. So you may find you are arguing with your parents more than you used to.
The reason why your parents do this is that they love you and want to protect you from danger.
Here are some tips for how to avoid and solve arguments with your parents:
● Discuss the rules ahead of time and not at the last minute. This way you will be able to tell whether they will say yes or no before you make plans. Your parents can also explain to you why each rule is in place. Ask them to give you the chance to explain how the rules make you feel and suggest what you think are right rules.
Your parents may be willing to listen to your ideas and use them when making rules that you both agree on.
● Try to remain calm when your parents say no to something. You will show your parents that you have
grown up by talking instead of shouting.
● Spend time with your family. Some teens argue with their parents over the amount of time they spend with
their friends. Chat with each other and make some special family time so that you can all enjoy the time you spend
at home. And you can also enjoy together such as going on a hike, taking a bike ride, or going to the beach.
5 .What do your parents probably do to make sure you are safe
A .Making their own decisions. B .Arguing with you.
C .Putting limits on you. D .Spending time with you.

C .To show how to spend time with family. D .To show how to remain calm in an argument.

① In order to protect their hearing from harm, the World Health Organization and International Telecommunications Union announced a non-binding(非强制性的)international standard for the production

(2023·江苏镇江 · 校联考一模)Schools help protect kids’ mental (心理的) health in many ways. Some states in the US let kids take mental health days. Should schools offer mental health days Here’s what some
students have to say.
Bibi Tooren, 11
Schools should give kids days off for mental health, because mental health is an important part of overall (整 体的) health. If you don’t feel well, it will have a big influence on your ability to focus. Kids get stressed with
long school days. Plus, kids don’t have much experience dealing with mental health crises (危机).
Nugg Canales, 8
Kids should get mental health days off from school. Sometimes, we need to stay at home and play games to calm our minds. Some schools don’t allow music, and I need soft music to make me feel good about myself and
the world. If you take a mental health day, you should not make up work because it adds stress to your life.
Hailey Young, 12
The weekend was created to give us time off, and we children need to learn to better manage our time. We hardly get our schoolwork done in the five schooldays we get. Plus, schools would need students to make up mental health days. They would probably do so during our real breaks: in summer vacation or winter vacation.
Another thing is that, for some kids, school might be safe.
Johnny Cabel, 9
I don’t think schools should give students days off for their mental health. Having too many days off can have a bad influence on grades. And many students’ parents have to go to work. If students get too many days off,
they might get left home too much. This could make some students’ mental health problems worse.
12 .Who thinks kids might have low grades in exams if they get mental health days off
A .Bibi Tooren. B .Nugg Canales. C .Hailey Young. D .Johnny Gabel.
13 .What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A .Taking advantage of the weekend. B .Giving kids a safe place like their school.
C .Making up mental health days they have got. D .Finishing schoolwork in the five schooldays.

A .The discussions about kids’ mental health crises.
B .The importance of offering kids mental health days.
C .Several suggestions for improving kids’ mental health.
D .Some opinions about whether kids should get mental health days off.

Have you ever been in a conflict (冲突) Do you know how to solve it Conflict resolution is a peaceful way of trying to deal with a conflict. Both sides in the conflict explain what they think happened to cause it. The
person who listens to both sides is called the mediator (调解人).
After both sides tell what they think happened to cause the conflict, they discuss ways to solve it. They try to come up with a “resolution” that both sides agree to. They cannot be angry during the communication. Everyone should use good listening and attending skills while talking. If voices get too loud or it appears that someone is angry, the mediator will speak up and have them treat each other with respect. After different suggestions are
shared in how to mediate the conflict, it is time for discussing the best solution(解决办法).
Here is an example of how conflict resolution works step by step in a school playground setting:
Someone says a student pushed him on the football field.
The person who was accused as the “pusher” says it was actually an accident.
The person who was pushed gets the mediator.
The mediator takes the two persons to a quieter place, away from others to talk.
The mediator calms them down and lets them know he understands their feelings.
Each person describes what happened.
The mediator repeats what he heard, so it is clear to everyone.
The mediator asks for ideas to solve the problem.
The two persons offer their own solutions.
The two persons have a discussion and come to an agreement.
The mediator makes sure the persons follow the solution.
The mediator offers praise for solving the problem.

(2022·江苏常州 · 校考二模)Mr. Gong was angry when he found out that his 12-year-old child had spent
13,272 yuan from March 17 to 21 when playing video games on his mobile phone. Gong made a complaint and
required the video company to return all the money. But “It’s in the air so far.” Gong told workers’ Daily.
This is not a single case in which children have paid a great deal of money to play online games. The Guangdong Consumer Council ( 消费者委员会) has received more than 10,000 similar complaints from local
parents in the first three months of this year.
Because of the increasing number of similar cases, the council talked with many online game companies in the province, strongly suggesting that they should introduce useful methods to protect the consumer rights of
children.
In fact, many online companies and mobile apps have provided a youth mode, announcing that parents can
control the content and limit the time their children spend in using the apps.
However, according to the consumer survey report by the Jiangsu Consumer Council. Some of the protection
modes of companies such as Huya, Douyu, Bilibili and Team Talk are far from useful.
For example users of all of the above companies can extend watching time by entering a password. Team Talk’s youth mode is no different from the usual mode, which means that children can watch all content. Wang Yihan, 16, from Fuzhou No. l High School, shared her experience. She said “Some apps would only send a notice to check whether the user is over 18 years old. The user can simply choose “Yes’ and star playing the game. It’s
no good.”
According to Guangdong Consumer Council, game companies are being advised to introduce different methods to check who the players are, including fingerprint, password or facial recognition ( 人脸识别) when
children pay to play online games.
23 .From the underlined sentence “It’s up in the air so far”, we can guess .

(2022·江苏泰州 · 校考三模)。Anger(生气)often makes us uncomfortable. Seeing your child’s anger can
be especially uncomfortable. In order to reduce this feeling, parents will often encourage children to “stop crying”
and say things like “It’s nothing to cry about.” It’s moments like these that plant the seeds(种子)of unhealthy anger. If a child never sees his or her parent express anger, he or she should never express anger, either. But if a parent always expresses their anger loudly, the child may think of anger as something that he is always afraid of.
So we should learn how to create healthier anger in our kids.
②The first thing you can do to create healthier anger in your children is to practice creating healthier anger in yourself. Once you’re better at experiencing anger and expressing it in a healthy way, you’ll be able to set a
good example for your kids.
③Stopping kids from expressing their feelings is wrong. You may feel bad when you believe you are wrong. When children express their feelings and are told that it’s nothing to cry about, they come to know that
they themselves are bad.
④We need to raise them in an environment where it’s safe to express feelings. Once you feel more comfortable with your own anger, you can teach your children why anger is a helpful feeling. When your kid expresses anger, help them find out what it is that has made them angry. Why did it make them angry How did it do that Then, you can teach them that those feelings are never wrong and our expressions of our feelings are in
our control.
⑤Anger is natural and common, and it can be experienced and expressed in a healthy way.
26 .From the first paragraph, we can infer(推断) .
A .expressing anger loudly is right not wrong B .parents should get angry with their children
C .parents have a great influence on their children D .children should express their anger like their parents
27 .Parents should be a good example for children by .
