On October 27, 2021, my friend and I boarded the first flight of our journey from Vancouver Island, to Peru, South America.
Twenty-four hours and four airports later we landed in Cusco, Peru, a city of about one million ing from Vancouver Island, Where the highest point is about 7, 000 feet above sea level, we knew that we were now at a much higher altitude -- over 11, 000 feet -- and needed time to get used to the scarcer oxygen(缺氧) levels! We followed the advice of other travelers and the locals: drink lots of coca leaf tea and rest for a couple of hours before any activity.
We were soon hiking through the ruins and surrounding ancient castles of Cusco. Leaving Cusco the next day, we stopped at the Moray Ruins, which were used for farming by the Incas. Their size and unique design should be considered a lesson in historical engineering skills. This Inca site is one of the least known tourist destinations, but it’s one of the most interesting places to visit.
Arriving in the beautiful Sacred Valley, we stayed at Willka T’ika for the next week. This place is wonderful. We enjoyed delicious vegetarian meals, all made with local produce by loving Quechua people.
You can’t go to Peru without visiting historic Machu Picchu. The “road” up to the ruins is made up of an endless series of switchbacks(急转弯), resulting in cold sweats. It was worth the ride, though.
It was too soon before we were leaving Peru. We learned the unique history of Inca, Quechua
culture, and the farming methods still widely practiced. The best thing we took away returning home
to Vancouver Island was how simple and caring the people are and how deeply they love the earth
and everyone they meet.

A. To have a good rest. B. To follow the local culture.
C. To feel better at a greater height. D. To avoid getting thirsty on the way.
25. What does the author think of the Moray Ruins
A. They’re no longer used for farming.
B. They’re known to most travel lovers.
C. They’re not as interesting as expected.
D. They’re an example of creative engineering.
26. Which can best describe the author’s trip to Machu Picchu
A. Dangerous but worthwhile. B. Dangerous and very tiring.
C. Enjoyable and interesting. D. Comfortable and wonderful.
27. How does the author’s trip to Peru influence him
A. It helps him understand his own culture.
B. It encourages him to be more caring.
C. It teaches him to accept all the differences.
D. It allows him to experience modern farming.

Like people from most countries, the people of the British Isles speak kinds of dialects. A dialect is a different version(版本) of a main language. It has different words and has something to do with the culture of the place in which it is spoken. It is usually spoken with a certain accent. Although it may be different, however, a dialect is usually not so different that an outsider can’t understand what is being said.
Speakers of dialects in Britain are often proud of them. For this reason, when you visit an area with a dialect, particularly when it is a place visited by tourists, gift stores will sell books about the local words.
The dialects of Northern Ireland have a great many words that other Britons have never heard of. An unusual example I recently learned from this part of the world is “boke”, which means “vomit(呕吐)”. The nearly poetic words of the Cockneys(伦敦东区的人) of the East End of London are famous throughout the world because they can be so clever and humorous. Here is a piece of rhyming slang(押韵俚语):A“whistle and flute” is cockney for “suit”.
It’s true that there are fewer dialects in Britain today than there were a hundred years ago, and far fewer than there were 200 years ago. The reason is quite clear: The modern world and its opportunities for communication have made the differences between people much smaller. When people speak and listen to more people from a much larger area than their mothers and fathers did, the differences between the ways they speak get smaller.
This means that there are now far fewer problems understanding each other when Britain people from the outer Hebrides of Scotland speak with people from Cornwall in th e southwest of the country. Also, English speakers from all over the world can generally understand each other. Of course, if dialects had not become less important, it would have been much more difficult for English as a second language to be such a big success all over the world.
28. How do people in Britain usually feel about their dialects
A. They often ignore them. B. They are ashamed of them.
C. They consider them useless. D. They take pride in them.
29. How are dialects in Britain changing according to the text
A. The number of dialects is getting smaller.
B. There won’t be any dialects in the near future.
C. There are fewer dialects in Northern Ireland than in other parts.
D. There were more dialects 100 years ago than there were 200 years ago.
30. What is the result of the change in dialects spoken in Britain
A. It has made the British culture much less attractive.
B. It has created more opportunities for communication.
C. It has played its part in helping English become a world language.
D. It has caused people more problems in understanding each other.
31. What is the best title for the passage
A. Dialect Speakers in Britain. B. Dialects Spoken in Britain.
C. The Future of British Dialects. D. The Influence of British Dialects.
D
Rescuers in the Turkish city of Izmir have pulled a young girl out alive from the ruins of a collapsed housing complex four days after a strong earthquake hit Turkiye and Greece. Health ministry officials said the girl was in good condition but would be kept under observation. She asked for a special meal of meatballs and a yogurt drink on her way to the hospital, the state-operated Anadolu Agency reported.
32. How did rescue workers and people watching feel when the girl was rescued
A. Sorrowful. B. Worried. C. Pitiful. D. Excited.

Summer passed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adapted to the Sunshine State.
School was coming, and I was afraid of it. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends Would If it in Would I survive in this strange new world Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn’t know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading. I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
Then one day, a tall boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team. I knew him—he was the star player! “Hey,” he said. “You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practicing. The subjects, especially English, really bother us. Do you think you could help us ” “Yes. Oh, definitely yes. I could, and I would,” I replied with surprise. We made the deal with an exchange of smiles.

Dear Alice,
Our school English paper will hold an essay competition whose theme is Natural Disasters. I’d like to invite you to take part in it.
It is well-known that many natural disasters happen every year in America, causing great damage. You can introduce the main natural disasters, such as hurricanes and snowstorms and tell some common knowledge about them. For example, you can discuss how they happen, what harm they may cause, and what you can do in face of disasters. The measures you take may benefit us, as we also face many natural disasters.
The deadline is June 8th, 2020. Looking forward to your article.
Yours,
Li Hua
七、读后续写(共25分)
Something gradually changed after that. We got along quite well. We were often seen study in the library as a group or walk to classes together. I tried to help whenever possible and shared my learning experience with them. I was really excited when I found learning methods which were suitable for them. With our joint efforts, their English performance improved significantly. The basketball players expressed their heartfelt gratitude to me after seeing their grades.
Meanwhile, the basketball players taught me how to play basketball. I learned a lot of basketball skills from them and became better and better at the sport, which made me have the confidence to take part in basketball games with them sometimes. Through basketball, I made more friends. Gradually, I became more outgoing and had the courage to communicate with others on my own initiative. Not only did I help the basketball players, but they changed me.

The fire is said to have started inside the local store and it has spread to the surrounding apartment buildings, As we speak fire fight ers and the police are helping those who could not make it outside without assistance, Though many seem to be safe, there is not much relief left to the people of Battery Park. According to the fire department, the fire began early last night after the bakery closed. There seems to be a problem with the water system in the area and it is stopping the fire prevention system from turning on. Many have come from local areas with food and water to help. As far as we know, no one has been injured yet by the fire because most people have known to leave the building hours ago, but as these lucky people stand outside of their burning homes, they do not feel calm. This will be an August that the people of Battery Park will not forget any time. Now back to you in the studio.
