When I was 19 years old, I was at a dance club. As we were walking to my car one cold night, a man walked up to us. Behind him was a woman carrying a small child. The child had a jacket on but it wasn’t buttoned up(扣上). The man began to tell us he wanted to borrow some money for the night to get his wife and kid into a hotel. He had a job but no place to live in and was waiting for the first paycheck. He said he could get our mailing address and mail the money back.
The guy I was with reached into his pocket to give this man a $20 bill. As the other man was extending(伸出) his hand out to take the money, I put my hand on my new friends’hand and said, “ Can I talk to you for a minute?”
I told him that every day people asked my mother for money on her way to work. She said they made more money than she did, simply begging for money. These people were scamming those with soft hearts. And if they were truly worried about their child suffering from the cold, they would have at least buttoned his jacket or covered him with his blanket.
My new friend looked at me with disappointment and said, “Michelle, I know there are people out there that make use of others. I also know there are people out there that are one paycheck away from being homeless. If I give $ 20 to 10 people and only one of them really needs it and uses it for the right thing, it is worth it.”
I am now 37 years old and have never forgotten what he said to me. I don’t even remember his name. But I do remember that that experience changed the way I look at different situations.
24. Where did this story happen
A. Near a hotel B. Behind a mailbox
C. In the dance club D. Outside a dance club
25. What do we know about the stranger according to the passage?
A. He would spend the cold night at an expensive hotel.
B. He might be just lying in order to get some money.
C. He was careless and didn’t take good care of his child.
D. He had been begging for a long time near the dance club.
26. Why did the author put her hand on her new friends’ hand?
A. She wanted to tell him to give some more money to the stranger.
B. She believed her mother had already given the stranger some money.
C. She wanted to warn him not to be cheated by the stranger.
D. She asked her friend to pay more attention to the baby instead.
27. Which of the following can replace the underlined word(划线单词) “ scamming ” in the 3rd paragraph?
A. caring B. cheating C. loving D. understanding
C
"Long time no see.” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation (直译) of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on . To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective (警探) named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed(混合) in the pot together, and they change the color and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness.
28. What did the writer himself feel surprised at
A. “Long time no see.” is used as a standard American English greeting.
B. So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.
C. The Chinglish expression “Long time no see.”
D. Finding out Americans use the expression every day.
29. What do the underlined words “melting pot” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Confucius’ words. B. American changing cultures.
C. A kind of cooked dish. D. Culture mixture.
30. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Detectives translated the phrase “Long time no see.”
B. Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.
C. The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.
D. Hollywood made “Long time no see.” popular.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Some American expressions can be used in China.
B. Americans have a strong interest in Chinese culture.
C. American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.
D. Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.
D
When comparing U.S. and Chinese schools, despite(尽管)many differences, one finds a number of unexpected similarities.
Students in both countries, in some ways, have much in common. This includes their experiences with popular culture like technology and social media, mutual care for the environment, and the fact that all were terribly influenced by COVID-19.
Students in both countries belong to what might be described as a “TikTok culture,” although this Chinese app is likely more popular in the U.S. than in China itself. The Chinese term kuaicanshi yule, which means fast-food type entertainment, is the better expression, one that conveys “snackable content” for often meme-oriented, fast moving fashion that compete for short attention spans. Whatever the app or device, students have been much influenced by technology, positively and negatively. In fact, Chinese students do face more controls from their schools about their use of social media, although many are good at finding ways to avoid them.
Furthermore, many students in both countries are attracted to similar styles, in both fashion and food, in music and film, with Chinese and American students often being similarly up-to-date on the latest hits, including television series.
Finally, what both have most in common is the strong wish to live a good life, be successful and secure. The U.S. and China approach these wishes in different ways educationally, but both could learn from each other. This is especially true given the fact that we all live in an increasingly globalized world, and must learn to work together to solve not only global problems like climate change and disease outbreaks, but unfortunate frictions(摩擦;冲突)between the U.S. and China. Indeed, with the last point in mind, a significant weakness in the educational systems of both countries is that neither really understands the other. This is not a new problem, but solving it needs serious attention.
32. What can we learn about the students in the U.S. and China from Paragraph 2
A. They show no interest in traditional culture.
B. They have chances to experience social media.
C. They are satisfied with their living environment.
D. They were hardly influenced by COVID-19.
33. What do Chinese students face about using social media in school
A. Rules to control. B. Supports from parents.
C. Agreement from schools. D. Risk to leave.
34.What do U.S.and Chinese students have in common
A. Schools stop them from using social media.
B. They have little interest in television series.
C. They achieve their wishes educationally similarly.
D. They can't fully understand each other educationally.
35. Which of the following can be the best title
A. U.S.and Chinese Schools
B. U.S.and Chinese Students
C. Similarities between U.S. and Chinese Students
D. Differences between U.S. and Chinese Schools

Ways to make a great first impression
You’ve heard it a million times already, but it really does take but a few seconds to make that all-important first impression. Here are some easy ways for you to impress your classmates or teachers.
● 36
Before you shake hands with somebody, make sure that your hands are clean. The handshake should not be too strong or weak. Most people use their right hands, unless they have a reason to use the left. 37
● Be on time
When meeting someone for the first time, arriving on time is as important as breathing. You may have an excuse, but that will leave the person who hardly knows you with a bad impression. 38 It’s better to be hanging around the place than be stuck in traffic.
● Introduce yourself and ask for names
Make sure you properly introduce yourself. Ask for their name in a polite way. 39 This will increase the chances of their remembering your name in the future. Always remember to stand up when greeting someone and be sure to introduce them to anyone you’re with.
● Make good conversation
To get the most out of your discussion, try to find something common between the two of you. 40 A person will feel more comfortable with someone they can relate to (产生共鸣).

C. Repeat the name and use it later in conversation.
D. As a general rule, plan to arrive about 30 minutes early.
