Attention, parents! If your son or daughter signed up for soccer, then please listen up. As you know, there were five age groups planned for this year: 5-6, 7-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14 and up. Unfortunately, we did not have enough kids signed up for the youngest group to make enough teams. I’m a parent of a soccer player myself, so I know how you must feel. The good news is that there are a few parents who are willing to volunteer to run soccer camps on the weekend in a more informal way for the youngest players. You would need to sign some paperwork and arrange your own transportation and appropriate clothing for each weekend, but at least your kids will have the opportunity to play soccer every week. For more information, please contact the soccer coach Steve Wollinsky at 425-7660. You can also add your name to a sign-up sheet that is posted on a wall next to the bathroom. If you do so, please make sure to leave your phone number and email address as well. Thanks for everything.

Sarah Toumi, a young girl growing up in France, had a dream of becoming a leader who could make a positive impact on the world. Her desire to help others was awakened when she accompanied her Tunisian father to his hometown in the eastern part of Tunisia during vacations. During her time there, she organized homework clubs and activities for children. Toumi personally witnessed the destructive effects of desertification (沙漠化). She realized that within 10 years, wealthy farmers had become worse off. Toumi was determined to stop the progression of the Sahara Desert. Due to a decrease in average rainfall and an increase in severe droughts (干旱), approximately 75% of Tunisia’s agricultural lands are currently at risk of desertification.
Toumi understood the need for a shift in farming practices. She firmly believed that even small plots of land could bring significant returns if farmers were willing to adapt. This adaptation involved planting sustainable crops, using advanced water treatment technologies, and prioritizing natural products and fertilizers (肥料) over chemical alternatives.
In 2012, Toumi took a decisive step towards realizing her dream of fighting desertification. She moved to Tunisia and set up a program called Acacias for All, with the aim of putting her sustainable farming principles into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living without water. ”
By September 2016, over 130,000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with a survival rate of 60% reported by farmers. Toumi estimates that around 3 million acacia trees are required to protect Tunisia's farmland. She plans to plant 1 million trees by 2018. In the coming years, Toumi aims to expand the program to Algeria and Morocco.
24. How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her
A. They made her decide to leave the country.
B. They helped her better understand her father.
C. They destroyed her dream of being a teacher.
D. They inspired her to help others.
25. What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland
A. Cold weather. B. Soil pollution. C. Low rainfall. D. Forest damage.
26. Why did Toumi establish Acacias for All in Tunisia
A. To ensure access to primary education for children.
B. To promote the conservation of agricultural land.
C. To generate job opportunities for young people.
D. To persuade the farmers not to use fertilizers.

For many years, David James, a researcher studying insects at Washington State University, had a strong desire to study the migration (迁徙) patterns of West Coast monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶). However, it was difficult to track their route because the populations are too small to follow. Typically, only one out of every 200 tagged monarchs is recovered at the end of their journey, making it unlikely to find enough butterflies in the wild to tag. Understanding their migration route is important for conservation efforts, but James had no means to determine it until he received an unexpected phone call from Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.
The prison was looking for new activities to enhance the mental well-being of those serving long-term sentences. James collaborated with the prisoners to raise monarch butterflies, observing their complete transformation process. Once the adult butterflies were ready, they were tagged and released from the prison. Over a span of five years, nearly 10,000 monarchs flew from the facility. In other regions of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, researchers released a few thousand more.
The tags on the butterflies included email addresses, and shortly after the first butterflies took flight, James started receiving messages from people who had spotted them. The reports confirmed that the butterflies spent their winter in coastal California. Twelve of them were found at Lighthouse Field State Beach in Santa Cruz, while several others made their way to Bolinas and Morro Bay.
This research not only helps scientists identify suitable locations to plant milkweed and other essential vegetation for the West Coast monarch butterfly’s life cycle but also revealed a compassionate side among some of the prisoners. “They were genuinely concerned about causing harm to the butterflies,” James recalls. Witnessing the transformation of the monarch butterflies also had an impact on the prisoners. “This butterfly changed,” prisoners told James, “and maybe we can change too.”
28. What was the main challenge faced by David James in his study
A. The small population size of the butterflies.
B. The lack of suitable tagging equipment.
C. The difficulty in locating the butterflies’ wintering grounds.
D. The resistance from the prison authorities.
29. Why did James work with prisoners from Washington State Penitentiary
A. To raise awareness about the importance of monarch butterflies.
B. To provide the prisoners with a new activity for mental health improvement.
C. To study the behavior of monarch butterflies in a controlled environment.
D. To train the prisoners in butterfly tagging techniques.
30. Why are the butterflies tagged before being released
A. To guarantee their safety. B. To enable them to fly longer distances.
C. To track their travel routes. D. To distinguish them from other species.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The impact of the research. B. The findings of James’ study.
C. The release of the prisoners. D. The life cycle of the butterflies.
A 29. B 30. C 31. A

Today, many people spend a lot of time reading online. Whether reading news or e-books, people are spending more time eyeballing (盯住) screens. While online reading opens up a great deal of knowledge to people, there are some disadvantages too, such as eyestrain, headaches, as well as difficulty in focusing on the text. Now a new reading system, Bionic Reading, developed by Swiss typographic designer Renato Casutt, can help people overcome these issues, and most importantly, it aims to help people read faster online and develop a more in-depth understanding of written content.
The reading system improve the reading process by guiding the eyes through text with artificial fixation points. To make it short: some parts of the words are displayed in bold (粗体). As a result, the reader only focuses on the highlighted letters and lets the brain center complete the rest. Your brain can “read” faster than your eyes, so by essentially reducing the number of letters your eye needs to look at, you can read faster while still preserving the full context.
Cassult discovered the system by accident. He was working on designing a book in a foreign language and realized he could read it if he sectioned it off. He worked for six years to develop Bionic Reading and is still working to adjust it.
A preliminary (初步的) study was conducted by the Swiss Institute InnoSuisee, but more research is needed before it can be definitively shown that the system improves reading. Some people with ADHD (多动症) prove that Bionic Reading helped them focus and comprehend what they are reading. Other people don’t seem to notice a big difference compared to regular text. There’s also no evidence to suggest Bionic Reading is any better than regular text. The best way to know if the Bionic Reader helps you read better online is to try it yourself.
32. What is the main purpose of Bionic Reading
A. To point out people’s reading problems.
B. To teach people necessary reading skills.
C. To reduce readers’ screen time and eye stress.
D. To improve people’s reading speed and comprehension.
33. What does the underlined phrase “artificial fixation points” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Words displayed in capital letters. B. Useful expressions.
C. Difficult sentences in the text. D. Bold letters.
34. What do some people with ADHD think of the system according to the text
A. It is complex. B. It can be beneficial.
C. It needs to be improved. D. It has little effect on them.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. A reading project for ADHD. B. A research on language learning.
C. A system to help with online reading. D. A tool for treating reading disability
【答案】32 D 33. D 34. B 35. C

As a result, the reader only focuses on the highlighted letters and lets the brain center complete the rest.(简而言之:单词的某些部分以粗体显示。
根据文章第四段“Some people with ADHD prove that Bionic Reading helped them focus and comprehend what they are reading.( 一些患有多动症的人证明,仿生阅读帮助他们集中注意力,理解他们正在阅读的内容。)”

根据上文“Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. (无论我们生活在世界的哪个角落,语言都是我们日常生活的一部分。)”和下文“Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities. (语言和音乐在我们的文化中都扮演着重要的角色,以下是它们的一些相似之处。)”可知,上文指出语言是我们日常生活的一部分,后文说语言和音乐在文化中都扮演着重要的作用。由此可知,音乐和语言一样——是日常生活的一部分。D项:Similarly, music is part of many people’s lives.(同样,音乐是许多人生活的一部分。)
根据上文“Both language and music have their own systems of notation. Language uses alphabets to represent sounds and create meaning(语言和音乐都有自己的符号系统。语言使用字母来表示声音和创造意义)”可知,上文提到了语言使用的符号系统,空处承接上文,应该说明音乐所对应的符号系统。E项:while music uses notes to represent pitches and rhythms.(而音乐用音符来表示音高和节奏。)
根据下文“Listening to the language someone speaks can provide valuable clues about their geographical origin. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.(听别人说的语言可以为他们的地理来源提供有价值的线索。同样,我们知道世界各地的音乐风格是不同的,这让我们有机会通过他们的音乐来探索许多不同的文化,并为我们提供适合各种情况的音乐)”可知,本段描述的话题和文化相关。B项:Both vary with culture.(两者都因文化而有差异。)
How do you know that I am annoyed 符合语境,且下文“While you may be able to perceive it through my facial expressions, you can judge it with certainty through my words. (你当然可以从我的脸上看出来,但你也一定会通过我的话知道。)”承接C项,是对选项问题的回答。故选C。
【40题详解】
根据上文“When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. (当你感到快乐的时候,你可能想跟着快乐的歌曲唱歌跳舞来庆祝你的快乐)”可知,快乐的时候,想听令人快乐的歌曲。由此推知,下文陈述,当不快乐的时候,可能想听悲伤的音乐。G项:In contrast, you probably also listen to sad music when you are feeling down.

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.
“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”
“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to a party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake not toinvite Lucy to the party. ”“She never even talks to me! ”
Dad sighed and moved down the aisle ( 走廊). “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her old friends behind and now she has to try to make new friends. Your party will be a great chance for her to get to know everyone. ”
“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!" Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes (翻白眼).
“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!"
On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope (缰绳).
Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing (想象)various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy. The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

Lucy’s present was the very last to be opened. Worrying that it would ruin the party, Madison grabbed the present reluctantly. As soon as she opened the box, her eyes widened in surprise——inside was a delicately hand-made lead rope! Amazed at its beauty, Madison pulled it out of the box. “It’s a lead rope for your horse Star. I made it by myself!”Lucy added, “I heard you talking about your horse at school. That’s when I got the idea of making you a lead rope. ”
Deeply moved by what she said, Madison held the lead rope tightly in her hands. It was the most beautiful birthday present she ever received. She suddenly felt so guilty because she had been so mean to Lucy. Feeling a mixture of regret and gratitude, she blinked back her tears and said, “Thanks so much for this lead rope. I love it! Would you like to join us and be our friends ” Lucy nodded cheerfully——Madison put her arm around Luey’s shoulders, both smiling. With applause and laughter echoing through the house, Lucy joined the other girls to enjoy the party.

24 How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her

C. They destroyed her dream of being a teacher.
D. They inspired her to help others.
25. What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland
A. Cold weather. B. Soil pollution. C. Low rainfall. D. Forest damage.
