Fathers Day is a day to thank fathers for all the love and support they give to their children. It is celebrated on different dates in different countries. Some countries like the US, the UK, Canada and India celebrate this festival on the third Sunday of June.
Many men didn't like the creation of Father's Day though. They laughed at the holiday's sentimental attempts to celebrate Father's Day with flowers and gift-giving, and they laughed at the creation of such holidays as a commercial trick to sell more products - often paid for by the father himself.
During the 1920s and 1930s, in the US there was a movement to promote the combination of Mother's Day with Father's Day to be a new holiday, Parents' Day. Every year on Mother's Day, Parents' Day supporters would gather in New York City's Central Park to remind the public that both parents should be loved and respected.
However, this attempt failed due to the Great Depression. Struggling retailers(零售商)and advertisers made more efforts to make Father's Day a"second Christmas" for men, promoting goods such as neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards.
When World War II started, advertisers began to argue that celebrating Father's Day was a way to honor American troops and support the war. By the end of the war, Father's Day may not have been a federal holiday, but it was a national event. In 1972, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed an announcement making Father's Day a federal holiday at last. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than SI billion each year on Father's Day gifts.
4. Why didn't some men like the idea of Father's Day?
A. They thought it was a"second Christmas"for men.
B. They hated flowers and gift-giving.
C. They had to pay for the gifts.
D. They thought it was too sentimental for men and it was a commercial trick.
5. Why weren't Father's Day and Mother's Day combined as one holiday
A. Because of the Great Depression.
B. Some men were not in favor of it.
C. Some women were not in favor of it.
D. Businessmen made their efforts to prevent it.
6. What made Father's Day a national event
A. Parents' Day supporters movement.
B. The Great Depression.
C. The presidential re-election campaign.
D. Advertisers promotion during World WarⅡ.
7 What is the best title for the passage
A. Father's Day: Its Orign and Development.
B. Father's Day: the Same as Christmas.
C. Father's Day: the Great Man.
D. Father's Day and Mother's Day

When World War II started advertisers began to argue that celebrating Father's Day was a way to honor American troops and support the war.
7. What is the best title for the passage
A. Father's Day: Its Orign and Development.
B. Father's Day: the Same as Christmas.
C. Father's Day: the Great Man.
D Father's Day and Mother's Day
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. D 7. A

【分析】本文是记叙文。文章介绍了父亲节的起源,以及父亲节在美国从一个全国性的活动发展为法定节日的过程。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据题干中的关键词some men like the idea可定位到文章第二段,由第二句“They laughed at the holiday's sentimental attempts to celebrate Father's Day with flowers and gift-giving, and they laughed at the creation of such holidays as a commercial trick to sell more products - often paid for by the father himself. ” 他们嘲笑这个用鲜花和礼物来庆祝父亲节的充满感情的尝试,嘲笑这样的节日是为了卖更多产品的商业把戏—通常是由父亲自己支付。可知,有些男士不喜欢父亲节,是因为他们觉得对他们而言父亲节太过感性,并且他们认为这只是商家的促销手段,故选D项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。由第三段“in the US there was a movement to promote the combination of Mother's Day with Father's Day to be a new holiday, Parents' Day” 在美国,有一场运动提倡将母亲节和父亲节结合起来,成为一个新的节日——父母节,和第四段“However, this attempt failed due to the Great Depression.” 然而,由于大萧条,这一尝试失败了。所以是由于经济大萧条,商人以父亲节为契机促销商品,导致父亲节和母亲节难以合并为一个节日来庆祝,故选A项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“When World War II started, advertisers began to argue that celebrating Father's Day was a way to honor American troops and support the war. By the end of the war, Father's Day may not have been a federal holiday, but it was a national event.”

The number one thing you'll probably do is book your flight if you want to travel to another country. But in some countries, you won't be able to fly directly.
Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, as a 109-acre area in the middle of Rome, doesn't have its own airport, but visitors can easily get there via Italy's capital.
Similarly, San Marino, the fifth smallest country in the world, is also surrounded by Italian land. It has a population of a little more than 33,000 and sits just nine miles from Federico Fellini International Airport in Rimini, Italy.
The second-smallest country in the world is Monaco, with a population of more than 38, 500. To get there, you'll have to go through France's Nice Cote d' Azur Airport, which is just a 25-minute car ride away from Monaco. Perhaps that's why developers didn't bother creating anything like a short flight.
Interestingly enough, the third and fourth smallest countries, Nauru and Tuvalu have their own airports, but the fifth and sixth smallest don't We already mentioned San Marino, and to get to Liechtenstein, you'll have to go through Switzerland's St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport, 24 miles away from the capital.
No such luck trying to fly into Andorra, which only requires a 25-mile drive to get from one end of the country to the other. Situated in a mountain range valley, Andorra has too much difficulty in building an airport runway. But for visitors there is no difficulty in going Andorra. Both Spain and France have access to Andorra. The closest way to Andorra's capital is Girona-Costa Brava Airport in Spain.

A. Five. B. Sⅸ. C. Seven. D. Eight.
13. Which country is the sixth smallest country

B. The fifth smallest country in the world has a little less than 33, 000 residents.
C. To get to Liechtenstein, you'll have to go through Italy's airport.
D. Visitors can arrive at Andorra through Spain or France.
15. Why CANNOT we fly into Andorra
A. It is difficult to build an airport in a mountain range valley.
B. It only requires a 25-mile drive to get from one end of the country to the other.
