3. What in your opinion is the most impressive thing about the festival
4. What else would you like to know about the festival and the writer's experience
I experienced the Naadam Festival in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region for the first time this year. The festival falls on the fourth day of the six month of the lunar calendar, usually lasting for three days. Naadam means "games" in Mongolian, and it is represented by three events: horse racing, wrestling, and archery, which are all so exciting to watch!
On the first day, I set off to the games early with my friend Burin. I saw a lot of people wearing fancy Mongolian robes. Some were feeding their horses, some were practising archery, and others were chatting or taking photographs. Burin told me that Mongolians travel every year from near and far to attend the festival, just as their ancestors had done for centuries.
MY AMAZING NAADAM EXPERIENCE
After the opening ceremony and some amazing performances, the wrestling competition began. Mongolian wrestling is different from the wrestling in the Olympic Games. There are no rounds, and wrestlers are not separated by weight. The wrestler loses if any part of his body above his knee touches the ground. After singing some songs, the competitors danced onto the green field, waving their arms in the air as if they were eagles. I was quite moved by their show of strength and grace.
I absolutely enjoyed the archery, too, but the horse races were my favourite part. However, I was surprised to see that the riders were boys and girls! I heard it is because children are lighter and the horses can run faster and farther. At first, I was a little worried about the children’s safety, but Burin said, "Don't worry. They’ve been riding horses all their lives. They’ll be just fine. "That was the moment I started to understand why people say "Horses are at the heart of Mongolian culture”. …
I’m finally back home now, feeling really tired, but celebrating Naadam with my friend was totally worth it. He invited me back for the winter to stay in a traditional Mongolian tent and eat hot pot. I can't wait!

Sample Writing
July 4, 2018
Today was my first fourth of July celebration, and I'll always remember it because it was so wonderful. The fourth of July is Independence Day in the US—the anniversary of the day the United States became its own country in 1776.
I began the day by packing my swimming suit and a towel. Then I went with my host family to a supermarket to load up on food and drinks. After that we were off to a friend's ranch out in the country for a barbecue and pool party.
It was all so amazing! While the adults cooked food on the barbecue, we played in the pool. Then we all ate and ate until we were completely stuffed.
Our friends had some old ice cream churners, so after lunch we all took turns churning homemade ice cream. Since the temperature outside was around 40 degrees, it seemed like the ice cream took forever! I would turn the handle on the churn until my arm was sore, and then someone else would take over. But it was all worth it, because when we were finished it was the most fantastic ice cream I have ever eaten! Then, someone asked me if I would like to try horseback riding. I was afraid at first, but they gave me a very gentle horse. It was so peaceful to ride the horse through the fields and forest. Finally, when it grew dark, we had a thrilling fireworks display.
Now I'm back home with my host family. Though I'm tired, I think this had to be the most exciting day of my life! I can't wait for next year!

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE FESTIVALS
Read the text again and underline the topic sentence of each paragraph that gives the main idea. And then work out the structure of the text.
Identify the main idea of a paragraph
Identifying the main ideas of paragraphs is necessary when analysing a text. Most paragraphs will have a “topic sentence” that tells you the paragraph's main idea. It is often the first sentence, but sometimes it is found elsewhere in the paragraph.
(Para.1) Festivals are celebrated all around the world. They have a wide range of origins, such as seasons of the year, religions, famous figures, and important events. Every festival has its different customs and unique charms. However, no matter how different they may seem, all over the world, the spirit of sharing joy, gratitude, love, or peace is common in all festivals.
WHY DO WE CELEBRATE FESTIVALS
Topic sentence:
Festivals are celebrated all around the world.
(Para.2)Of all the traditional festivals, the harvest festival can be found in almost every culture. This important agricultural festival takes place after all the crops have been gathered in. People celebrate to show that they are grateful for the year’s supply of food. In ancient Egypt, the harvest festival was celebrated during the springtime--- the Egyptian harvest season. It featured a parade and a great feast with music, dancing, and sports. Today, in some European countries, people decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and get together to celebrate over a meal. During the Mid-Autumn Festival in China, families gather to admire the shining moon and enjoy delicious mooncakes.
Topic sentence:
Of all the traditional festivals, the harvest festival can be found in almost every culture.
(Para.3) Customs play a significant role in festivals, but sometimes, they can change over time. With the development of modern society and the spread of new ideas, some traditions may fade away and others may be established. One example is the typical Chinese Spring Festival custom of lighting firecrackers to drive away the evil spirits and celebrate the new year. Nowadays, many big cities have given up this custom in order to avoid air pollution. Another example is Halloween, which slowly became an exciting festival for children, in spite of its religious origins.
Topic sentence:
Customs play a significant role in festivals, but sometimes they can change over time.
(Para.4) Festivals are becoming more and more commercial, with businesses taking advantage of the celebrations. Online shopping websites and social media apps have made it much easier for the public to spend more on gifts for their loved ones. Although some believe festivals should not be commercialized, others believe the increase in spending is good for the economy and public happiness.
Topic sentence:
Festivals are becoming more and more commercial, with businesses taking advantage of the celebrations.
Topic sentence:
Festivals are an important part of society.
(Para.5) Festivals are an important part of society. They reflect people’s wishes, beliefs, faiths, and attitudes towards life. They are occasions that allow us to relax and enjoy life, and forget about our work for a little while. They help us understand where we came from, who we are, and what to appreciate. And if you study festivals carefully, you may be surprised to find that different cultures actually have a lot in common after all.
Read the text again and fill in the blanks.
figures
joy

In pairs, discuss the following questions.
1. What do most festivals seem to have in common Why do you think people around the world find these things important
Festivals most often revolve around building family and community ties. Festivals are rarely celebrated alone. And even when someone is alone during a festival, the festival reminds them of people who used to be in their lives, but who are no longer present. This is important because people are at heart social creatures who desire to have relationships with others and to be a part of the group.
2. How do you feel about festival customs that have already faded away
3. What is the writer’s attitude towards the commercialisation of festivals
I feel sad, because these customs are part of our culture and history. They make our lives more interesting, and they remind us who we are.
The writer doesn’t directly say. Overall, he seems to think that it is a positive thing, as it helps the economy and makes it easier to buy gifts.

Rio Carnival

Assimilation(同化)
Tips
Letters such as "d", "n", "t", and "s" often take on a different pronunciation from when they are used as initial sounds than when they are used in the middle of a word or to link words in a sentence.
For example:
In a word like education, the "du" will become /d / or /dj /, instead of /d(j) / as in duty.
An ending "t" followed by a word beginning with "y" will often become /t / and be assimilated with the word that follows, as in last year /lɑ st j (r)/.
An ending "d" followed by a word beginning with "y" will often become /d / and be assimilated with the word that follows, as in did you /d d u /.
An ending "n" will often become /m/ if it is followed by a word beginning with "b", as in in bed.
An ending "s" may be pronounced / / with a beginning "s" or "sh", as in those shirts.
An ending "s" followed by a word beginning with "y" will become / / and be assimilated with the word that follows, as in as you / ju /.

Li Ming: I love Mid-Autumn Festival!
Betty: Why
Li Ming: Because on the day, we can have a happy and peaceful holiday and eat moon cakes, which make me excited.
Betty: What do you usually do on this day
Li Ming: As for me, I usually go shopping in the supermarkets where a lot of goods are on discount on the day. Then I visit my grandparents with some gifts and have a big dinner together. Next, all the family members make the moon cakes. I do like all of these things but personally speaking, I really love to make moon cakes with family. Finally, we eat moon cakes, admire the moon and chat with each other with a cup of tea.
Betty: Wow, that sounds great. Could you tell me when to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival
Li Ming: On the fifteenth day of August in Chinese lunar calendar.
