Living life to its fullest
On the night of August 24, 2001, everything changed when my friend's car hit a wall with me inside. I lost most of my right leg, and I was left bleeding with several broken bones. At the hospital, although my body was weak, my mind was still very clear. I just kept telling myself to hold on. A week later, I made a deal with the doctors that once I could roll onto my side, I could leave. Two weeks later, I was allowed to go home.
Although I left the hospital, the fight was far from over. My left knee was badly injured, which resulted in different operations over the next few years.
And soon, more of my right leg had to be removed. This made it harder to wear my false leg, so I donated it to a nurse who couldn't afford one for herself. The joy of being able to provide this gift for someone else was greater than the happiness I felt on any day I was able to wear it myself.
People often tell me they're proud of me for staying strong. But in my mind, staying strong has always been my only choice. So, on the day I left the hospital, I made a promise to myself to always live life to the fullest. Now, I may not be able to do things the way everybody else does them, but still, I always find a way to do them. I soon settled into everyday life again, until one day I realized I wasn't living my life as fully as I wanted to.
After 13 years of thinking that I was confident, I had an unfamiliar feeling sweep over me. For the first time in my life, I was not only confident but I wanted to help those around me.
In 2014, I even started modeling. My dream is that one day a little girl will see me in a magazine and say, “Wow, she's beautiful, and she only has one leg. I could do that too someday, even though I have a disability.” My dream is simple: to inspire every man, woman, and child into knowing and believing that they are beautiful just the way they are.
4. How did the author feel after the car accident
A. She complained that life was unfair to her.
B. She was unable to accept the loss of her leg.
C. She kept a positive attitude toward life.
D. She felt lucky that she was still alive.
5. Why did the author feel happy in Paragraph 3
A. She was able to offer help to others.
B She could wear her false leg again.
C She had lived her life to the fullest.
D. She could do everyday things the same as everybody else.
6. Why did the author begin modeling in 2014
A. She wanted to be a famous magazine star.
B. She wanted to encourage others to be confident about themselves.
C. She wanted to challenge herself to be a speaker.
D. She wanted to prove that disabled people could also succeed.
7. What was the author's main purpose in writing the article
A. To stress the importance of having a dream.
B. To show how difficult the life is for disabled people.
C. To inspire others by sharing her past experiences.
D. To give advice to disabled people on how to make a living.
C 5. A 6. B 7. C
But in my mind, staying strong has always been my only choice. So, on the day I left the hospital, I made a promise to myself to always live life to the fullest.
The joy of being able to provide this gift to someone else was greater than the happiness I felt on any day I was able to wear it myself. 故选A。
I was not only confident but I wanted to help those around me.
My dream is that one day a little girl will see me in a magazine可知,作者的梦想是有一天小女孩能够在杂志上看到她,从而激励身有残疾的小女孩。

How clever can a computer be Maybe you can get the answer after reading the following passage about a newly-developed US computer program called Smarter Child.
If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid’s huge memory. It can remember many facts. For example, Smarter Child knows every baseball player in every team this season and the weather in every city across the US. He also knows every word in the dictionary. However, if you ask Smarter Child other private questions, you will get strange answers. A question about Smarter Child’s age returns, “I’ll be older than you after further study!”, and asking where he lives, you will get, “In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.”
Smarter Child uses the huge information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. To answer questions about spelling, for example, Smarter Child goes to www.ahdictionary.com. For the weather, he visits www.. He turns to www.the- for scientists and www. for a fantastic movie.
Some scientists believe that by joining many systems of the Internet, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the combined (结合的) knowledge of, say, Albert Einstein, Richard Nixon and Britney Spears could be born. However, Smarter Child has difficulty in discerning whether a behavior is right or wrong, which is obvious to any young child. If he wants to think and learn without any help from the programmers like boy-computer David in the movie Artificial Intelligence (AI), he must solve two problems.
The first is that computers find it difficult to read web pages because the files are sorted in different ways. That’s why programmers need to tell Smarter Child where to look for the weather. It would be a much more difficult task to let him find it by himself. Another problem is that while Smarter Child can deal with information more exactly and faster than any human, he needs programmers to make better systems that allow machines to solve problems of common sense, which is a huge challenge.
8. What may be unknown to Smarter Child
A. His age. B. The weather in New York.
C. A word in the dictionary. D. A player’s name of the Boston Redsox.
9. Which website can Smarter Child visit to answer the spelling questions
A. www. B. www.
C. www.the- D. www.ahdictionary.com
10. What does the underlined word “discerning” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Preventing. B. Copying. C. Inventing. D. Telling.
11. How is boy-computer David different from Smarter Child
A. He has a huge memory. B. He can think and learn independently.
C. He can make a weather forecast. D. He deals with information fast.
A 9. D 10. D 11. B
根据第二段“A question about Smarter Child’s age returns, “I’ll be older than you after further study!””(一个关于问Smarter Child年龄的问题答复是:“我再学习就会比你大了!”) 故选A。
根据第三段“To answer questions about spelling, for example, Smarter Child goes to www.ahdictionary.com.”(例如,要回答关于拼写的问题,Smarter Child可以访问www.ahdictionary.com。)
根据划线词所在句“However, Smarter Child has difficulty in discerning whether a behavior is right or wrong, which is obvious to any young child. ”(然而,聪明的孩子很难辨别一个行为是对还是错,这对任何小孩子来说都是显而易见的。)中的“has difficulty in”和“whether a behavior is right or wrong”可推知,Smarter Child 在分辨一个人的行为对错方面是有困难的,故“discerning”意为:辨别。
根据第四段“If he wants to think and learn without any help from the programmers like boy-computer David in the movie Artificial Intelligence (AI), he must solve two problems.”(如果他想在没有程序员帮助的情况下思考和学习,就像电影《人工智能》中的电脑男孩David一样,他必须解决两个问题。)

While Ellard Hunting and fellow researchers were out studying the weather at a field station in England, they noticed something unexpected on their instruments. Though there was no storm coming, the scientists’ electric field monitors recorded a strange increase in atmospheric electric charge(电荷) .
Nearby, honeybees that lived in on-site hives were swarming (蜂拥) as they tried to find a new home. When the team took a closer look at their data, they discovered that the swarming honeybees had created an atmospheric electric charge. The researchers shared more details about their findings in the journal Science.
“This is the first report of biology as a source of space charge.” says Hunting, a biophysicist at the University of Bristol in England. Scientists had known that individual bees carry a small charge while flying through the air, caused by the friction of their body parts against the air and each other. It’s similar to how rubbing a balloon on a piece of cloth creates static electricity (静电). Scientists believe a bee’s charge helps pollen (花粉) stick to it and signals to other bees which flowers have already been visited. But until now, researchers had never recorded such a high voltage (电压) among swarming honeybees.
In terms of electricity generation, a bees warm’s charge isn’t so impressive:It would take about 50 billion bees to power an LED light. But compared to the charges produced by common weather events, the bees’ charge density was six times greater than an electrified dust storm and eight times greater than a thunderstorm cloud.
Scientists hope to continue exploring how biology influences physics and are curious to know if something similar is happening with other wildlife, such as birds and bats.
12. What were the researchers doing when something unexpected on their instruments happened
A. Studying weather events. B. Testing their instruments.
C. Recording insects’ behavior. D. Looking for honeybees’ new home.
13. What’s the function of a bee’s charge
A. To help the bee fly fast. B. To signal to other bees.
C. To find pollen more easily. D. To avoid losing their way.
14. What will the scientists continue to study next
A. The wide application of biology. B. Measures to protect birds and bats.
C. The influences of dust storms on wildlife. D. Whether other wildlife can produce electric charge.
15. Where is the text from
A. A novel. B. A fiction. C. A magazine. D. A leaflet.
A 13. B 14. D 15. C

It was the middle of winter some 30 years ago. I was a young father with three little children depending on me. My college education, however, wasn’t helping me to find a good job in our depressed area. My work as a teacher had dried up and now I was working in a saw mill (锯木厂) for just above the minimum wage.
As I got ready to go to work I wrapped band-aids (创可贴) around my fingers and put more in my pockets. Cutting and piling wood for 8 hours a day had caused my fingers to split and bleed at their tips in the cold, dry, winter air. Then I walked down to my car in the snow and hoped it would start.
That day at work was harder than normal. The machines kept breaking down. And we had to rush to catch back up as the wood piled up. On top of it all the heaters in the building weren’t working and we could see our breath as we spent hours chopping, piling, carrying, and packaging the hard wood flooring to be shipped out.
When the work day finally ended, I walked tiredly toward the time clock, took off my work gloves and inspected my aching fingers. The splits were worse than ever and I had bled through the band-aids again. I tried to straighten out but my bad back cramped (绞痛) up as I did. I started my car and drove back home. I looked at the snow and blinked back tears. I wondered how long I could keep doing this, if things would ever get any better, and why life was so hard.
I tried to put a smile on my face as I opened my front door, but instead one appeared naturally. My daughter ran up to me, yelling “Daddy”, and wrapped her little arms around my neck. I lifted her up and my heart exploded with love.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
My tired body didn’t feel so tired any more.

“Happy birthday!” my wife greeted me warmly.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My tired body didn’t feel so tired any more. My aches and pains disappeared into her hug. And the joy in my heart chased the sadness away. In that moment I knew I could go on and that things would get better. In that second I remembered again that I was here for love. I kissed my little girl’s cheek, held her tight, and thanked God for my life as hard as it was.
“Happy birthday!” my wife greeted me warmly. My wife had prepared a rich meal. My heart was filled with happiness and warmth. I realized that it was worthwhile to work for my family. I think we all have bleeding fingers and band-aid days in our lives here. But with love we can make it through them all. After all, work may give us a living, but it is love that gives us a life.

C. She had lived her life to the fullest.
A To stress the importance of having a dream.
B. To show how difficult the life is for disabled people.
C. To inspire others by sharing her past experiences.
D. To give advice to disabled people on how to make a living.
C
D
15. Where is the text from
A. A novel. B. A fiction. C. A magazine. D. A leaflet.
