Just a 20-to 30-minute drive from the city center, the park puts the best landscapes in the Texas Hill Country on full display, holding 6 miles of hiking trails, both paved and unpaved. I still remember that busy autumn evening as I hurried with my eldest daughter, Athena, to get to her classroom on time for the parent-teacher night. We walked in and all eyes were on me. A few adults quickly quieted their kids’ whispers. A classmate yelled to my daughter, “What’s wrong with your mom’s face ” Shocked, I started to explain my condition, but my six-year-old daughter looked at him and said, “It’s my mom’s birthmark! Don’t be rude!” I was extremely proud of how she handled that situation.
I was quite young when I realized I looked different because of my large facial birthmark. I always thought I would be alone because of it. Being compared to Batman’s evil Two-Face made me believe I could never find love. But I was lucky enough to meet my husband, who saw me for who I am inside. When I had my first daughter, I was overjoyed, but I began to worry if the world would judge my children. I always worried I might pass my condition onto my children; I didn’t want them to grow up feeling judged. Unfortunately, my facial difference has impacted my children. My daughters get disinvited from birthday parties or sleepovers, or I learn certain kids are no longer friends with mine after their parents saw me at school.
When my kids were young, I explained how my special purple skin was rare and we talked about acceptance and never judging others on how they look. When my girls kiss my purple-skinned cheek, I feel “normal” around them and their unconditional love. With time going by, both my daughters have become my strongest supporters. Thanks to them, I’ve begun to feel more self-confident as I try to be a good role model.
Their worldviews are similar to mine. We see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more accepting heart. As the saying goes, your daughters will grow up to be your best friends. I know that will be the case for me!
24. What happened when the author went to attend the parent-teacher night
A. Athena was praised by others for her bravery and optimism.
B. Athena defended her mother against her classmate’s rudeness.
C. Some parents criticized their kids because of their misbehaviour.
D. The author felt shocked at her daughter’s response to her classmate.
25. According to paragraph 2, which of the following views might the author agree with
A. Friendship needs to be watered by love.
B. We should treat our children as best friends.
C. We should accept other people’s differences.
D. Our ability to handle difficulties can be developed.
26. How are the daughters influenced by the author’s birthmark
A. They have to drop out of school.
B. They have the same physical condition as me.
C. They have difficulty maintaining friendships.
D. They feel worried because they are often judged.

As people become more aware of the importance of eco-friendly power sources, we have devoted much time to inventing creative devices. A newly developed paper battery promises to make a big difference to single-use electronics.
The battery is crafted from sustainable materials, which not only strengthens its eco-friendliness but also makes it cost-effective to produce. This combination of biodegradability (可生物降解) and affordability makes it attractive for a wide range of applications. Another standout feature of this paper battery is its flexibility in terms of shape and size. Unlike traditional batteries that are available in fixed sizes, this paper battery can be tailored to meet diverse requirements.
In reality, the paper battery is enough to power an LCD alarm clock. “While it won’t be charging up your computer anytime soon, there’s lots of potential for low-powered sensors. We present a printed paper battery developed to power single-use disposable electronics and to reduce their environmental impact to the lowest level,” write the researchers in their published paper.
The battery is based on a metal-air electrochemical cell. Made from sodium chloride salt-diffused (氯化钠盐扩散的) paper, it can measure as little as one square centimeter, and is based on printed inks. All that’s needed, then, is a small amount of water, as little as two drops. This dissolves the salts within the paper, and then activates the battery as they travel. The battery starts producing power around 20 seconds after water is added, according to the experiments carried out by the team.
Although the performance decreases over time as the paper dries out, it can be topped up to some extent with more water. The researchers say they want to improve the efficiency of the battery in the future, and get it working for longer. “With a rising awareness of the e-waste problem and the emergence of single-use electronics for applications, there is a growing need for low environmental impact batteries,” write the researchers.
28. Which is a feature of the paper battery
A. It is made from single-use materials. B. It is costly to put together.
C. It can be used to charge up your computer. D. It can be produced in diverse shapes.
29. What can we learn about the paper battery according to the text
A. It can be applied to any electronics.
B. It is able to supply energy to our cell-phones.
C. Its power can be refilled by adding some water.
D. It has reduced the environmental impact to the lowest.
30. What’s the main idea of paragraph 4
A. What the paper battery consists of. B. How the paper battery works.
C. Where the paper battery can be applied. D. Why the paper battery is popular.
31. What is most likely to be the focus of future research according to the researchers
A. How to get rid of impacts of single-use electronics.
B. How to improve the efficiency of the paper battery.
C. How to reduce the demand for single-use electronics.

A culture’s values can be mirrored by its humor. Humor has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who, in “On Nature”, disliked humor, “Laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising from sudden thought of feeling far better than others.” He thought humor to be a negative quality of human narrow-mindedness.
However, Mordechai Gordon, Ph. D of Education, insists, “Humor allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing rather than serious.” I agree with Gordon. Learning to look at the world through humor is important.
In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humor as a way to express their feelings, how else would Americans keep from clawing their eyes out (伤心欲绝) and going the way of lemming (盲目跟从) Television shows a joke “The Daily Show” have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by metaphorically (隐喻地) airplane-ing (用鼻子吸食大麻) politics into our mouths. They make politics fun.
Of course, politics is only one type of humor. Social humor helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image. On the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group “The Pussycat Dolls”, describing their hit song “Don’t Cha” as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture.
A study from Loyola University of Maryland has shown that humor is one determining factor for selecting a mating partner. Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner.
Of course, humor is not always used for good purposes. Humor can be linked to vulgarity (粗俗) and racism, but, like everything else, it has potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one another.
Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn’t aware of.
With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity and sometimes at humanity.
32. Hobbes believes that humor ______.
A. was for people to view the world from another angle
B. resulted in narrow-mindedness of human beings
C. had the power to mirror personal glory and national values
D. was only a way to laugh at others to make oneself feel better
33. The fourth paragraph is developed mainly ______.
A. by comparison B. by process C. by example D. by classification
34. What is the author’s attitude towards political humor
A. Worried. B. Disappointed. C. Curious. D. Appreciative.
35. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A. The author is determined to face life with a sense of humor.
B. The author feels helpless and sad about getting older.
C. Never be the one who laughs at other people.
D. Chaplin wasn’t aware of being laughed at.
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. D 35. A

A Girl with Stage Fright
It was obviously going to be one of those days. Students were preparing for a singing contest actively. Paul, a music teacher, made comments on the students' performance at the end of a rehearsal(彩排). A girl named Lisa did the poorest preparation. Paul was very annoyed and entirely frustrated with her. He doesn't recall how he closed the rehearsal, but he's sure the words he chose were not words that would lift the girl's spirits but rather satisfy his selfish need to punish her for the poor performance.
The moment Paul dismissed the students, Lisa, the very reserved freshman girl, made a path straight toward him. She looked him right in the eye and said, "I hate you!" Paul was taken aback and frightened by the passion and honesty in her voice. Though entirely shocked, he was somehow able to collect himself and stay calm. He looked her right in the eye and said, "Well, that's a shame, but it's my duty to remind you and inspire you. " She didn't react, but rather stormed away, her anger unchanged.
Several days later, they had the occasion to speak in private. Lisa asked if Paul remembered the time she told him that she hated him. How could he forget She went on to admit quite openly and honestly that it was herself, not him, who she hated. The moment got heavy and she began to tell him of her fear and pressure when standing on the stage. She believed that no matter how well she prepared, she would perform terribly on the stage. Paul became aware that she had serious stage fright and also realized that maybe he had done something improper several days ago. Then he talked to her patiently and sincerely, hoping to help her build the confidence.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 开头已给出。
The day before the contest, she was practising for the singing competition alone.

However the next morning, when she stood on the stage, her face turned pale.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The day before the contest, she was practising for the singing competition alone. She thought about how to sing every key and practiced it time and time again, so that she could prepare herself well enough. At that moment, Paul came to her and told her that actually he himself was also a person with stage fright when he was young. But he believed that as long as he practiced hard, he would win. Finally, he did beat the stage fright. Hearing that, Lisa knew that she would be another Paul.
However, the next morning, when she stood on the stage, her face turned pale. Looking around, she saw Paul sitting in the audience, smiling at her. Lisa remembered what Paul told her, and she believed that she had got well prepared. Gradually, she found herself lost in singing her song and forgot all the bad feelings. After her performance, the whole audience applauded for her. She won.

While the Alamo is a separate attraction, you will get to enjoy the architectural wonders of Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. They’re all connected by a hike and bike trail, with plenty of stops along the way to picnic, climb trees, and refill water. Admission is free!
Eisenhower Park
We see the world a little differently and with a kinder more accepting heart.

D
