Reuben Kozary, a student from ANU, Australia, had never traveled to China before. Before coming to Shanghai, he had only heard about life in China through friends, social media and classroom textbooks.
Reuben Kozary was very curious to see what life in China was truly like. Fortunately, he was chosen to go on a one-month exchange program to ECNU. After living in Shanghai for a month as a student, he can now say that being a student in China was one of the greatest experiences in his life.
A Warm Welcome came from ECNU. The reception he got from the Chinese was a warm one, and it wasn’t simply because of the weather. His Chinese language teachers and program coordinator were all so friendly and excited to meet new students. Teachers gave them a tour of the beautiful ECNU campus, which is filled with sports facilities and cafeterias. To top the first day off, the teachers even treated them to a delicious dinner at one of the four cafeterias on campus. He quickly learnt that Chinese people love to eat tasty food together!
The teaching style at ECNU is quite unique. Their language classes were taught entirely in Chinese, and students were not allowed to speak English. His teacher even told them, with a smile on her face, that if she caught them speaking English more than five times, they would have to buy ice-cream for the whole class. While this was daunting at first, it helped Reuben Kozary to improve his listening and speaking skills much quicker than when he was studying in Australia. Life outside of the classroom was full of adventure. Because of the central location of the ECNU campus and Shanghai’s extremely convenient subway system, the after-class travel possibilities were endless.
Although there was much more to say about his time in Shanghai, he can summarize by saying that this one-month ECNU exchange program had been a life-changing experience. He had made many new friendships, and been inspired by the Chinese and their culture.
4. What was Reuben’s first impression of life in China like
A. Cold and boring B. Warm and welcoming
C. Confusing and surprising D. Boring and unfair
5. How did the teachers at ECNU help Reuben improve his Chinese skills
A. By teaching in English B. By forbidding the use of English in class

Starting this fall, primary and middle school students in China will have at least one weekly course on labor education, according to a new curriculum (课程) standard released by the Ministry of Education (MOE).
Labor education ranges from household chores to on-campus labor and community volunteer services, generally 3 types according to the new standards: the first refers to everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home appliances (家电); next is productive labor, including agriculture, making traditional handicrafts (手工艺品), and applying new technologies such as 3D printing; the third type is service work, including volunteer work. The new curriculum also calls for a week of extracurricular and off-campus activities designed for labor education once every school year.
A recent study showed that primary and middle school students in China only spend an average of 12 minutes a day on chores, compared to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France. Many countries start students’ labor education at a young age. Finland begins to develop students’ life skills in primary school. Spinning, woodworking, cooking and other craftsmanship classes are offered. In Germany, pupils have two labor classes per week. Electronics, office technology, sewing, housekeeping, and career guidance are all taught there.
Adding labor education was out of concern that the country’s youngsters do too little housework and look down on physical labor jobs. Due to great academic pressure, schools tend to put their academic curricula on the top, and parents sometimes see household chores as distractions (分心). But, according to the MOE, labor education must be strengthened to help students develop social values, an interest in labor and finally an all-around development.
8. Which of the following belongs to productive labour
A. Maintaining home appliances. B. Doing some cooking.
C. Selling traditional handicrafts. D. Planting crops.
9. How much time do primary and middle school students in France spend on chores daily
A. Twelve minutes. B. Forty-two minutes.
C. Thirty minutes. D. Seventy-two minutes.
10. What is the fact about labour education in Finland
A. It is considered more important than academic learning.
B. The country starts labour education in primary school.
C. There are only a couple of labor education courses.
D. Students have two labour classes every month.
11. Why does the MOE demand labour education should be strengthened according to the last paragraph
A. It can help with their development of social values.
B. It can improve students’ performance on learning.
C. It can help exercise their special talents.
D. It can enrich students’ off-campus life.

It’s nearly exam time again. How to prepare well for an exam Suggestions run as long as the history of the exam. Besides those long-accepted traditional methods, many better learning strategies have long been scientifically explored, tested and recommended.
According to the current scientific research, some study methods popular with students aren’t actually very effective. Although highlighting text is one of the top tips, students are easy to get so absorbed in the highlighting that it’s not certain they are learning anything useful. “You need to do more than just highlight information with your favorite highlighters and colours. You need to go back and make flashcards of all the important concepts and test yourself on them.” That’s a point made by John Dunlosky, Professor of Psychology at Kent State University in the US. By repeatedly testing yourself on something over a period of time, say, weeks or months, students strengthen the pathways between neurons - or nerve cells - in the brain. And the more often they do this distributed practice, the easier it becomes to strengthen information.
Some prefer the cramming method - trying and learning lots of information in a short period of time. However, Dunlovsky commented that it doesn’t work on some subjects, such as language learning. It’s far more effective to join a conversation class and practise speaking every week than to practise for hours in front of the mirror the night before the oral exam!
Whatever the method is, making different types of associations with what you’re trying to learn is meant to be effective. Professor Dunlovsky recommends visual associations. Students are encouraged to develop a more vivid mental picture of what they’re reading. That’ll help quite a bit for some kinds of studies - maybe history and language and so on. As for spelling difficult words, students can try putting the first letters of a sentence together, like big elephants cause accidents under small elephants spells “because”.
12. What does the writer mean in the first paragraph
A. Tradition methods are out of date.
B. Long suggestions often work very well.
C. Modern methods are more widely accepted.
D. Advice on preparations for exams has never been stopped.
13. What would Dunlosky possibly agree
A. Repeated test can help remember better.
B. Creating mind map is very effective.
C. Highlighting is important to learn anything useful.
D. Practising before the night of the exam is of great use.
14. How does the writer develop the passage
A. By borrowing words from experts. B. By introducing the ideas of an expert.
C. By giving some typical examples. D. By criticizing some ineffective practice.
15. What would be the best title of the passage
A. Survival Skills in the Exams! B. Preparations The Earlier, the Better!
C. Various Methods Effectiveness Speaks! D. The Expert Guides You to Pass Exams!
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West. We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Upon Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track (足迹;踪迹) so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine (松树) trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

【答案】Paragraph 1
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Dad and I found it was so cute that we decided to run after it. After a while, we were completely lost in the forest. There was nothing left in our sight but the trees. “We may not be able to make it back to the farm house in time for supper.” I thought to myself. After a series of useless attempts to find a way out, we felt hungry and tired.
Paragraph 2
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. We got stuck in the forest. And an unexpected shower added to the difficulty of us in finding a way home, for all the tracks we had made disappeared because of the rain. I was almost breaking down when my father said, “Don’t worry, my son. I remember there is a river near the farm house. Find the river and we will be back home.” Finally, we found the river and got back to the house along it. Needless to say, we ate a late dinner.

Books to Read in Your 20s
The Kite Runner
By Khaled Hosseini
As a Middle Eastern and North African Studies student, I have a great interest in books about what takes place in this area. I first read this book in high school and really enjoyed it because of its accurate language. If any of you is interested in reading this book and hasn't yet, I highly recommend it.
Fire fly Lane
By Kristin Hannah
This is my favorite book. It is a story about friendship, love and life lessons. The story covers the lives of two best friends, Tully and Kate, from childhood to adulthood. I learned so much about friendship and life. So, read Firefly Lane! You'll laugh, you'll cry, and then you'll share this book to your best friend.
Half the Sky
By Nicholas Kristof
For any person of any age, Half the Sky is a must-read. It describes the struggle of women and the most pressing human rights problems of our time: the common oppression of women and girls.
The Little Prince

C. By giving extra homework D. By offering private advice
6. What does the word ‘daunting’ in the text imply
A. Exciting B. Relaxing C. Encouraging D. Frightening
7. What made Reuben’s life outside of the classroom adventurous
A. The convenient underground system B. The strict discipline at ECNU
C. The challenging Chinese lessons D. The delicious food at the cafeterias

D
