Hyperbole and a Half, by Allie Brosh.
The book, based on Brosh’s wildly popular website, contains simple vignettes and comic drawings about her young life. The adventures she describes are mostly inside her head, where we hear and see her deep thoughts most of us are too shy to let out in public.
You will finish reading it in three hours, tops. But you’ll wish it went on longer, because it’s so funny and smart.
The Magic of Reality, by Richard Dawkins.
Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist at Oxford, has a gift for making science enjoyable. This book is as accessible as the TV series Cosmos is for younger audiences—and as relevant for older audiences. It’s an interesting, well-illustrated(图文并茂) science textbook offering attractive answers to big questions, like “How did the universe form ” and “What causes earthquakes ”
What If ,by Randall Munroe.
The subtitle of the book is “Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions,” and that’s exactly what it is. People write Munroe with questions that cover all fields of science: physics, chemistry, biology, etc.
Munroe’s explanations are funny, but the science supporting his answers is very accurate(精确的). It’s an entertaining read, and you’ll also learn a bit about things like ballistics, DNA, the oceans, and the atmosphere.
1. What does the writer think of Brosh’s book
A. Interesting. B. Strange.
C. Priceless. D. Boring.
2. What is Dawkins good at as an evolutionary biologist at Oxford
A. Making TV series. B. Drawing pictures.
C. Answering big questions. D. Making science attractive.
3. What kind of questions do people mainly like to ask Randall Munroe
A. Funny questions in daily life. B. Scientific questions.
C. Serious entertaining questions. D. Questions hard to answer.

On any given day, you can find most 10-year-old boys throwing a ball around outside, riding bikes or playing video games. But Braden Baker is different.
Braden is a hearing damaged 5th-grader and has to wear hearing aids (助听器). Unluckily, Braden’s dog Chewy found his hearing aids on the floor and destroyed them-not once but twice and they had to be replaced. But at $3,500to $6,000 a pair, Braden’s carelessness was costly.
Braden’s mother Ashley sat Braden down and had a long talk about taking better care of his hearing aids, explaining how much they cost.“I told him that he was lucky to get another pair and that some people couldn’t afford a new pair, ”Ashley said.
Those words stuck in Braden’s mind, who realized not every child who needed hearing aids could afford them. Recently the 10-year-old boy decided to start a GoFundMe page to raise money for those who aren’t so lucky.
Braden made a video to explain why he wanted to raise money. Ashley said, “We weren’t sure how it would turn out. He began with a goal of$1,000.We woke up the next morning and found it had raised$400.”
This encouraged him to start making more videos. Fast-forward a few months and Braden’s GoFundMe page has raised over $15,000, which Braden donated to the Oticon Hearing Foundation. That money will be used to help other families buy hearing aids for their children.
The project has not only taught Braden the value of money, but according to his mom, “he’s learned that if you put a small idea into action, amazing things can happen.”

Set 40 kilometers northeast of the city of Ambatondrazaka, the Zahamena National Park's landscape consists of (……组成) valleys surrounded by a flowing mountain range.
It has an overall land coverage of 64, 300 hectares, but only 42, 000 hectares is open to the public due to strict conservation (环境保护) reasons. It receives an average yearly rainfall level of about 6 feet and experiences frequent rain showers even during the dry season between April and October.
One really interesting thing about the Zahamena National Park is that the unique territory of its highland has paved the way for the development of several ecosystems that exist at the same time in this park. This is the reason why the types of wildlife living in one area are different in another, which makes it quite exciting to explore.
This protected area is divided into two parts, with a separate piece of land in the middle where many small villages are situated. These villages are inhabited (居住) by the members of the Sihanaka and Betsimisaraka ethnic groups.
The Zahamena National Park gets its name from the local Zahana Mena tree, an uncommon type of hardwood that grows in the lower regions of this protected area. It is characterized by its resilient (坚韧的) wood that can be rather challenging to cut, join, shape and carve even with modern tools.
Established as a strict natural highland reserve in 1927 (and one of the first of its kind in all of Madagascar), the Zahamena National Park was officially given its national park status (地位) in 1997 and was eventually opened to the public. Due to its remarkable territory and unique biodiversity, this national park was later listed as a key part of the collective UNESCO World Heritage Site called the Rainforests of the Atsinanana in 2007.
8. What can we learn about the Zahamena National Park
A. It is surrounded by the city of Ambatondrazaka.
B. It receives little rainfall during the dry season.
C. It is partially open to the public.
D. It is divided into three parts.
9. What has contributed to several ecosystems in the Zahamena National Park
A. The strict conservation rules. B. The unique weather conditions.
C. The special territory of its highland. D. The influence of several local villages.
10. What is the Zahamena National Park named after
A. An ethnic group. B. A type of local tree.
C. A traditional tool. D. A nearby city.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. A brief introduction to the Zahamena National Park.
B. A complete guide to visiting the Zahamena National Park.
C. Details of Zahamena National Park's great efforts in conservation.
D. Reasons for Zahamena National Park becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Electronic timing is older than most people imagine and was used for the first time more than a hundred years ago at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Initially, the well-known company Ericsson was tasked with developing the technology, but it was the Swedish inventor Ragnar Carlstedt who eventually created the final product.
At the same time, Carlstedt introduced another invention: the finish line camera. The 1, 500-meter Olympic final was extremely close with Arnold Jackson from Great Britain winning by only 0.1 seconds. But it was impossible to decide on the silver medal since the two Americans Abel Kiviat and Norman Taber finished side by side. For the first time in history, the outcome of an Olympic event had to be settled based on a photo finish when Kiviat was judged to be “slightly ahead”.
The significance of these two inventions led a major newspaper to write: “Electronic timing at the Olympic Games. Simultaneous (同时发生的) timing and photography of contestants. A brilliant idea!”
The next step in timekeeping was the photo-finish camera with a time stamp imprinted on each picture, which was introduced at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. The 1948 Olympics saw the introduction of another invention with the continuous slit camera (狭缝摄影机), where a film behind a narrow slit rolls (滚动) with the same speed as the runners. Four years later the clocks were connected to the slit camera giving a solution of 1/100 s. But it was not until 1972 that official times were recorded to the 100th of a second.
The next big step in the eighties was to make the camera digital to speed up the feedback (反馈). But the idea behind the slit camera was kept and is still the basis of all timing systems for athletics used today. The only difference is that now there is a very narrow sensor array ( 阵列传感器) instead of the moving film.
After a century technology has reached the point where the whole timing system can be stored in a smartphone. So in a way, the circle was closed when SprintTimer, a sports timer and photo finish app, was developed in the same place and precisely a hundred years after Ragnar Carlstedt.
12. What do we know about electronic timing
A. It was created in recent years.
B. It was first introduced at the Olympics.
C. It was developed by the well-known company Ericsson.
D. It was perfected by the Swedish inventor Ragnar Carlstedt.
13. What does paragraph 2 focus on
A. The increasing need for a finish line camera.
B. The excellent performance of Arnold Jackson.
C. The significant role of Carlstedt's another invention.
D. The intense competition of the 1,500-meter Olympic final.
14. How was the digital camera in the eighties different from the slit camera
A. It avoided the use of a moving film.
B. It rolled with the same speed as the runners.
C. It made a 100th-of-a-second record possible.
D. It adopted a new idea for all timing systems used today.
15. What does the underlined part “the circle was closed” in the last paragraph mean
A. Further improvement was discontinued.
B. The problem was back to the origin.
C. A new invention was created.
D. The issue was resolved.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D

12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Electronic timing is older than most people imagine and was used for the first time more than a hundred years ago at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. (电子计时的历史比大多数人想象的要久远,100多年前,1912年斯德哥尔摩奥运会首次使用电子计时。)”可知,100多年前,1912年斯德哥尔摩奥运会首次使用电子计时。B选项“It was first introduced at the Olympics.(它最初是在奥运会上引入的。)”与原文信息一致。故选B。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“At the same time, Carlstedt introduced another invention: the finish line camera. (与此同时,卡尔施泰特介绍了另一项发明:终点线摄像机。)”以及“For the first time in history, the outcome of an Olympic event had to be settled based on a photo finish when Kiviat was judged to be “slightly ahead”.(这是历史上第一次,奥运会比赛的结果必须根据照片来决定,当时基维亚特被判“略微领先”。)”
根据第四段中“The 1948 Olympics saw the introduction of another invention with the continuous slit camera , where a film behind a narrow slit rolls ( 滚 动) with the same speed as the runners.(1948年奥运会推出了另一项发明,即连续狭缝相机,在窄缝后面的胶卷以与运动员相同的速度滚动。)”以及倒数第二段中“The next big step in the eighties was to make the camera digital to speed up the feedback . (80年代的下一个重大进展是使相机数字化,以加快反馈。)”以及本段中“But the idea behind the slit camera was kept and is still the basis of all timing systems for athletics used today. The only difference is that now there is a very narrow sensor array instead of the moving film. (但是狭缝相机背后的想法被保留下来,并且仍然是今天用于田径计时系统的基础。唯一的区别是现在使用了非常窄的传感器阵列,而不是移动的胶片。)”可知,狭缝摄影机和数码相机的区别在于,狭缝摄影机是胶卷以与运动员相同的速度滚动进行拍摄,而数码相机不是移动的胶片而是使用了非常窄的传感器阵列。故选A。
【15题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词前面的句子“After a century technology has reached the point where the whole timing system can be stored in a smartphone.(一个世纪后,技术已经达到了整个计时系统可以存储在智能手机中的地步。)”可知,一个世纪后,整个计时系统存储在了智能手机中,根据划线词后文的内容“ when SprintTimer, a sports timer and photo finish app, was developed in the same place and precisely a hundred years after Ragnar Carlstedt.( 当时SprintTimer,一个运动计时器和照片整理应用程序,在同一个地方被开发出来,正好是Ragnar Carlstedt100年后。)”

“What’s that squeaky noise ” Meg asked her eight-year-old daughter, Haley. She looked down at the girl’s shoes and noticed her sneakers’ soles had been torn open. Meg and Haley were on their way home from school, and it had just stopped raining. Water on the road had leaked into Haley’s damaged shoes, making a squishy noise.
Meg immediately took her daughter to a shoe store to buy her a new pair of sneakers. She had some money for groceries but thought getting Haley a new pair of shoes was more important. “How about these ” asked Haley, who was checking shoes in the section only for boys. “Mama, I want these limited-edition sneakers. Buddy loves a TV show and always tells me how he wishes to wear such shoes.”
Meg frowned. Not only did she not have money to afford two pairs of shoes, but she wondered why Haley was too interested in getting her classmate Buddy a new pair. Sensing her mother’s hesitation, Haley continued, “Buddy is from a very poor family, mama. Poorer than us. His shoes are torn and look miserable. Everybody laughs at him. Please, can we buy these shoes for him You can buy mine later.”
Meg thought for a while and decided it would be best if she bought her daughter shoes for now. “You will fall sick if you keep wearing your wet, torn shoes. I’m sorry, honey, but you need a new pair.” Haley sighed heavily and agreed. She was not excited to see the new pair of sneakers her mom had bought for her.
As Meg and Haley left, Bob, the shoe store owner who knew Meg well, walked to the entrance and sighed. He had overheard everything and knew what it was like to live in poverty. He wanted to help Haley fulfill her mission of helping Buddy but didn’t know how. Moreover, the pair of shoes Haley wanted to get for Buddy was a limited-edition collection, which had been ordered by someone else. He could not simply give them away.

【答案】Possible version1:
Suddenly, Bob remembered something and climbed downstairs where old shoes were stored. Wriggling his way through the sections where old limited-edition shoes were stocked, he searched high and low and finally rested his eyes on the shoe box at the top of the shelf. There it was; the pair bore much resemblance to what Buddy desired but were an older version. He gingerly brought it down and dusted the ash off. Then he contacted Haley’s mother and explained his motive. “I want to surprise the girl. Is that OK if I drop off the shoes before six tomorrow morning ” “Sure. Thanks, Mr. White. I’m glad you could help!” Meg said gratefully.
The next morning, Haley was shocked to find a shoe box lying outside her house. She rubbed her sleepy eyes and caught sight of the note stuck on the box. It read, “Hope Buddy loves them!” Curious to know what was inside, Haley hurriedly opened the box and stood stunned the next minute. Though a bit different, the shoes were what would make Buddy exhilarated. Cradling the shoes in her arms, she cried in joy. Meg, who had been hidden behind the door to eye her daughter’s reaction, shed tears, too. She was convinced that something else illuminated her that day — two golden hearts.

Ashley said “We weren’t sure how it would turn out.

D. It is divided into three parts.
