We were hoping to get to Miami by 7:00 p.m., but the storm started moving faster than we had thought. We just can’t take any chances, so we’ll have to stop in Havana City and continue on tomorrow morning. There is also a chance that the storm will move closer to us, and we might experience some strong wind and rain. We know it seems nice and calm now, but that could change at any minute. For this reason, we need everyone to leave the deck and walk to your rooms at once. This is for your own safety. Do not run; we don’t want anyone getting hurt. Please don’t worry. We’ve done this trip from Mexico City hundreds of times, so you’re in good hands. If you need help, please look for our staff or dial 811 on the phone in your room.

My wife, Eleanor, and I took the train from Paris to Strasbourg, where we were met by our driver and guide and the minibus which goes along with the boat. We stopped off in Barn for an hour on the way. Then we were taken to Nancy where the boat was kept.
After the other passengers arrived, we had our first dinner on the boat. After dinner we walked into downtown Nancy, a village with a large square and wooden houses.
Monday, October 6
Rained last night, cloudy in the morning, 69°F
We spent about two hours in Nancy, then sailed on the Canal de la Marne au Rhine. Kind of a lazy day. Eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, after dinner we watched a tape on Baccarat, which we will visit tomorrow.

Tuesday, October 7
Light rain, 64°F
This morning we drove over to Baccarat and toured its museum and the church, which has this unbelievable lamp that is going on a world tour the next day. We did lots of shopping, then walked across the bridge to see a very, very modern Catholic church with special Baccarat windows.
We drove to the top of the Voges Mountains and started down the eastern side. Later we drove to Sorrenbourg to see the 13th century church at the Cordeliers. It contains the largest window by Marc Chagall --- 24 feet wide by 40 feet high.
Wednesday, October 8
Cloudy, 65°F
Today we sailed from Schneckenbush to Saverne. We went through two caves, an extremely unusual part of the journey. This river scenery is very different. We were in a mountain valley with grassland on one side and a forest beginning to show some color on the other.

It’s not easy being a teenager nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.
Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he tell you what’s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ll calm up. Instead, let him try to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’re always there for him if he seeks advice or help. Show respect for your teenager’s privacy(隐私). Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations.
Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long tell him he can talk for l5 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least all equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job.
24. The main purpose of the text is to tell parents .
A. how to get along with a teenager
B. how to respect a teenager
C. how to help a teenager grow up
D. how to understand a teenager
25. What does the phrase “clam up” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. become excited B. show respect
C. refuse to talk D. seek help
26. The last paragraph is about how to teach a teenager ________.
A. to use the phone in a proper way
B. to pay for his own telephone
C. to share the phone with friends
D. to answer the phone quickly
27. What should parents do in raising a teenager according to the text
A. Not allow him to learn driving or take drugs.
B. Give him advice only when necessary.
C. Let him have his own telephone.
D. Not talk about personal things with him.
C 25. C 26. A 27. B
根据第一段“It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.”(给孩子成长所需要空间,同时温柔地让他知道,当他需要你的时候,你仍在他身边,这是很重要的。)
根据画线词前的“If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he tell you what’s on his mind. (如果你的孩子不愿意讨论一些事情,不要坚持让他告诉你他在想什么)”可知,如果孩子不愿意讨论某件事,不要坚持让他说出心里所想的。那么,相对应的,如果你越坚持,他反而越不会说出来,由此可画线短语的意思是“拒绝谈论”,故选C。
【26题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段第一句话“Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family.”(教你的孩子家庭电话是为整个家庭服务的。) 故选A。
根据文章第一段的“It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.”(给孩子成长所需要的空间,同时温柔地让他知道,当他需要你的时候,你仍在他身边,这是很重要的。)以及第二段的“Instead, let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’re always there for him should he seek advice or help.”(相反,让他尝试自己解决问题。
C
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note — “Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery” — and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically (魔术般) appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊) . Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.
28. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer to __________.
A. show his magical power B. pay for the delivery
C. satisfy his curiosity D. please his mother
29. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house
A. He wanted to have tea there. B. He was a respectable person.
C. He was treated as a family member. D. He was fully trusted by the family.
30. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist
A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now. B. It has been driven out of the market.
C. Its service is getting poor. D. It is not allowed by law.
31. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box
A. He missed the good old days. B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.
C. He needed it for his milk bottles. D. He planted flowers in it.
C 29. D 30. B 31. A
根据第一段“As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer. (作为一个5岁的男孩,我目不转睛地盯着固定在他腰带上的硬币兑换器。有一天送货时,他注意到了这一点,便从他的硬币兑换机里掏出25美分给了我。)”可知,因为作者当时才5岁,对硬币兑换器感兴趣,感到好奇,所以为了满足小男孩的好奇心,Mr. Basille从他的硬币兑换器里拿出25美分给了他。故选C项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn't freeze.(各家各户和送奶工之间关系密切。Basille先生甚至有我们家的钥匙,当外面太冷的时候,我们就把盒子放在室内,这样牛奶就不会结冰。)”可判断,Mr. Basille完全得到作者家人的信任,所以才会有男孩家的钥匙。故选D项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Big companies allowed the production cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Beside, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service. (大公司允许生产更便宜的牛奶,因此让送奶工很难竞争。此外,牛奶到处都可以买到,而提供送奶服务可能并不实际。)”可知,家庭送奶不再存在是因为送奶工无法提供比大公司更便宜的,更大量的牛奶,送奶工难以与之竞争,所以送奶服务已经被挤出市场。故选B项。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段的“Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. (最近,我在农村看到的一个旧牛奶盒勾起了我童年的回忆。)” 可知,最近,作者在乡下看到一个旧牛奶盒,使作者想起了童年时牛奶工送奶到家的场景。所以作者把一个旧牛奶盒带回家是因为他怀念过去的美好时光。故选A项。
D
The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named “Drive LAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.
Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated and inactive.
Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.
These include custom-made navigation (导航) tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Phil Blythe explains: “For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country driving is important for keeping their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.”
“But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.”
Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains, “The Drive LAB is helping us to understand what the key stress points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to solve these problems.”
“For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We’re looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that.”
“We hope that our work will help with technological solutions to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”
32. What is the purpose of the Drive LAB
A. To explore new means of transport. B. To design new types of cars.
C. To teach people traffic rules. D. To find out older driver’s problems.
33. Why is driving important for older people according to Phil Blythe
A. It keeps them independent. B. It helps them save time.
C. It builds up their strength. D. It cures their mental illnesses.
34. What do researchers hope to do for older people
A. Ensure their safety with the help of technology.
B. Improve their diving skills.
C. Provide advice on repairing their cars.
D. Organize regular physical checkups.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. A New Model Electric Car B. Keeping Older Drivers on the Road
C. A Solution to Traffic Problems D. Driving Services for Elders
D 33. A 34. A 35. B

根据第一段“The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named “DriveLAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.”(纽尔斯卡大学的智能交通队将一辆电动汽车转变成立一个叫做DriveLAB的可移动实验室,其目的为了了解到老年司机所面临的挑战,发现其关键点。)
根据第四段中“Phil Blythe explains: “For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.””(Phil解释道:“对于很多老年人来说,尤其是那些独自居住或者是住在农村的,开车对于保护老年人的独立很重要,让他们能自由地出去,而不必去依赖其他人”。) 故选A。
根据第六段中“The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems.”(正在帮助我们了解到,对于老年司机来说,什么是关键点,以及我们应如何使用技术来解决这些问题。)及最后一段“We hope that our work will help with technological solutions to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”(我们希望我们的工作将有助于提供技术解决方案,以确保高龄驾驶人在驾驶时更安全。)
Keeping Older Drivers on the Road

How to Remember What You Read
Reading is important. But the next step is making sure that you remember what you've read! ___36___You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images(形象)may fly right out of your head. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read.
● ___37___
If the plot, characters, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won't be able to remember what you read. It's a bit like reading a foreign language. If you don't understand what you're reading, how would you remember it But there are a few things you can do... Use a dictionary; look up the difficult words.
● Are you connected
Does a character remind you of a friend Does the setting make you want to visit the place Does the book inspire you, and make you want to read more With some books, you may feel a connection right away. ___38___ How willing are you to make the connections happen
● Read it; hear it; be it!
Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some character into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He'd make faces in the mirror, and change his voice for each character. ___39___
● How often do you read

Sunday, October 5
Clear, 69°F
It was pleasant to sit out on deck (甲板) and watch the scenery go by at about 3pm.
Tuesday October 7

If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for l5 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least all equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job.
24. The main purpose of the text is to tell parents .

A. become excited B. show respect
