A 32-year-old Australian runner has set a new world record for continuous daily marathons as a woman.
Erchana Murray-Bartlett set out from Cape York, the tip of Australia, in August 2022. She then ra n a marathon every day for 150 days— a 3,900-mile journey that ended in Melbourne on Monday, January 16,2023.
By running the entire north-south distance of Australia, Murray-Bartlett beat the record held by British runner Kate Jayden, who ran a marathon for 106 continuous days last year. In addition to the new Guinness World Record, Murray-Bartlett was running to raise money for a conservation charity, the Wilderness Society. She raised $70,000 during her journey across Australia.
“Yesterday was everything,” she said. “When I stood on the start line on August 20 I could never have imagined what the next 22 weeks would bring... I can’t put into words how good crossing that finish line felt, and to be honest, I think I’ll be processing for a few weeks, months, and even years to come.”
Murray-Bartlett has been running professionally for many years. When she missed out on qualifying. for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she decided on a new goal: running the length of Australia and setting a new female record for continuous marathons.
To state the obvious: it wasn’t always easy. Murray-Bartlett experienced three injuries during the first 3 weeks of the journey. But she didn’t give up, and her body adapted as she ran along her country’s coasts, rainforests, dirt roads and highways. She ran through heavy rain and intense heat.
The journey also served to raise awareness of Australia’s extinction(灭绝) crisis. Many of the island nation’s plants and animals are found nowhere else — yet 500 of them are threatened with extinction. Throughout the trip, Murray-Bartlett highlighted her country’s biodiversity on social media. When she finally crossed the finish line on Monday evening, she learned she’d raised nearly double her fundraising(募捐) goal.
4. What’s one goal of Murray-Bartlett’s running
A. To enter the next Olympics. B. To go on running professionally.
C. To collect money for protecting wildlife. D. To help bring back lost plants and animals.

C. There were many challenges during the journey.
D. The journey raised awareness of extinction crisis.
7. Which words can best describe Murray-Bartlett
A. Energetic and frank. B. Tough and determined.
C. Positive and adventurous. D. Considerate and generous.

The old saying “Use it or lose it” doesn’t seem to be true when it comes to someone’s ability to preserve and use a foreign language, a new study has showed.
The research team tasked almost 500 British people who had taken French GCSE or A-level between the 1970s and 2020 with completing a French vocabulary and grammar test. They included a survey of whether participants had used their French knowledge over the years since their exams, and excluded (排除) anyone who had studied a language later on in life.
They found that participants who had taken their exam 50 years ago and not used French ever since performed as well as as recent school leavers and those who occasionally used French.
Lead researcher Monika Schmid said: “The knowledge of language is surprisingly stable over long periods of time compared to other subjects such as maths, history or science. This is likely because of the way language is stored in memory. Vocabulary is memorized in the same way that facts, dates and names are, while this memory may become weaker over time, and grammar is learned in a similar way to riding a bike, a kind of muscle memory, which is much more stable. Vocabulary knowledge on the other hand, exists in a highly connected network, which means that we need only be reminded of a word that sounds similar to a foreign language word for our brain to recall it.”
“Many people are not willing to revisit languages they once learnt as they fear they will be forced to relive some of the more ‘boring’ elements of the courses, such as grammar, but our work suggests that this would not be necessary. We hope that it might encourage more people to pick foreign languages back up if they know it would only take a short amount of time in refresher lessons to go back to their original level,” Schmid added.
8. What did the researchers ask the participants to do
A. Take a French exam.
B. Conduct a survey in French.
C. Learn French from recent school leavers.
D. Talk about their French GCSE experience.
9. What can help us recall a foreign word
A. A fact related to it. B. Our muscle memory.
C. A similar-sounding word. D. The grammar of the language.
10. What can we infer from Schmid’s words in the last paragraph
A. One is able to quickly and easily to learn a new language.
B. Years of use promises fluency in a foreign language.
C. The boring elements of a language course are important.
D. It is easier than one thinks to pick a foreign language back up.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Language Tests Taken at School Matter
B. If You Don’t Use a Language, You Lose It
C. Knowledge of Foreign Languages Lasts a Lifetime
D. When You Grasp the Grammar, You Learn the Language

Housing officials say that lately they are noticing something different: students seem to lack the will, and the skill, to deal with ordinary conflicts. “We have students who are mad at each other and they text each other in the same room,” says a teacher. “So many of our conflicts are because kids don’t know how to solve a problem by formal discussion.”
And as any pop psychologist will tell you, bottled emotions lead to silent discontent (不满) that can boil over into frustration and anger. At the University of Florida, emotional conflicts occur about once a week, the university’s director of housing education says, “Over the past five years, roommate conflicts have increased. The students don’t have the person-to-person discussions and they don’t know how to handle them.” The problem is most dramatic among freshmen; housing professionals say they see improvement as students move toward graduation, but some never seem to improve, and they worry about how such students will deal with conflicts after college.
Administrators guess that reliance on cell phones and the Internet may have made it easier for young people to avoid uncomfortable encounters. Why express anger in person when you can vent (发泄) in a text “Things are posted on someone’s wall on Facebook like: Oh, my roommate kept me up all night studying,” says Dana Pysz, an assistant director at the University of California, Los Angeles. “It’s a different way to express their conflict to each other, consequently creating even more conflicts as complaints go public.” In recent focus groups at North Carolina State University, dorm residents said they would not even deal with noisy neighbors on their floor.
Administrators point to parents who have fixed their children’s problems in their entire lives. Now in college, the children lack the skills to attend to even modest conflicts. Some parents continue to interfere (干涉) on campus.
12. What is the main reason for many roommate conflicts
A. Students are not good at reaching an agreement about the problems.
B. Students are not satisfied with each other.
C. Housing directors are not responsible for them.
D. Students are not strong-willed.
13. What do we learn from the second paragraph
A. Students, especially freshmen, should bottle up their dissatisfaction.
B. Students in Florida sit down and have a person-to-person talk once a week.
C. Not all students are able to handle conflicts by the time they graduate.
D. The number of conflicts among roommates has decreased in the past five years.
14. What is the attitude of Dana Pysz when he mentions roommates reveal their conflicts in the media
A. Disapproving. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
15. What should parents do according to the passage
A. They should be involved in their children’s life on campus.
B They should deal with their children’s problems in their whole lives.
C. They should constantly contact the administrators of the college.
D. They should teach their children the skills to tackle the conflicts.

Lead researcher Monika Schmid said: “The knowledge of language is surprisingly stable over long periods of time, compared to other subjects such as maths, history or science.
A 9. C 10. A 11. C

根据第二段中的“The research team tasked almost 500 British people who had taken French GCSE or A-level between the 1970s and 2020 with completing a French vocabulary and grammar test.(研究小组要求近500名在20世纪70年代至2020年间参加过法语GCSE或a -level考试的英国人完成法语词汇和语法测试。)” 故选A项。
根据第四段中的“Vocabulary knowledge on the other hand, exists in a highly connected network, which means that we need only be reminded of a word that sounds similar to a foreign language word for our brain to recall it.(另一方面,词汇知识存在于一个高度连接的网络中,这意味着我们只需要被提醒一个听起来与外语单词相似的单词,我们的大脑就能记住它。)”
根据尾段““Many people are not willing to revisit languages they once learnt as they fear they will be forced to relive some of the more ‘boring’ elements of the courses, such as grammar, but our work suggests that this would not be necessary. We hope that it might encourage more people to pick foreign languages back up if they know it would only take a short amount of time in refresher lessons to go back to their original level,” Schmid added.(“许多人不愿意重新学习他们曾经学过的语言,因为他们担心他们会被迫重温课程中一些更‘无聊’的元素,比如语法,但我们的研究表明,这是没有必要的。我们希望如果他们知道只需要很短的复习时间就能回到原来的水平,这能鼓励更多的人重新学习外语,”施密德补充道。)”可知,施密德认为,如果他们知道只需要很短的复习时间就能回到原来的水平,这能鼓励更多的人重新学习外语,由此可知,一个人只需要很短的复习时间就能够重新学习这门外语。故选A项。
根据首段中的“The old saying “Use it or lose it” doesn’t seem to be true when it comes to someone’s ability to preserve and use a foreign language, a new study has showed.(一项新的研究表明,当涉及到一个人保存和使用外语的能力时,“非用即废”这句老话似乎并不正确。)”可知,本文介绍的是一项研究表明,“非用即废”这句老话在一个人保存和使用语言的能力方面似乎不正确,结合下文中对该研究的过程的介绍以及对研究结果的分析以及第四段中的“The knowledge of language is surprisingly stable over long periods of time, compared to other subjects such as maths, history or science. This is likely because of the way language is stored in memory.(与数学、历史或科学等其他学科相比,语言知识在很长一段时间内的稳定性令人惊讶。)”
D
Why express anger in person when you can vent (发泄) in a text “Things are posted on someone’s wall on Facebook like: Oh my roommate kept me up all night studying,” says Dana Pysz, an assistant director at the University of California, Los Angeles.
B. They should deal with their children’s problems in their whole lives.
C. They should constantly contact the administrators of the college.
D. They should teach their children the skills to tackle the conflicts.
A 13. C 14. A 15. D

根据首段中的“So many of our conflicts are because kids don’t know how to solve a problem by formal discussion.(我们的很多冲突都是因为孩子们不知道如何通过正式的讨论来解决问题。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段中的“The problem is most dramatic among freshmen; housing professionals say they see improvement as students move toward graduation, but some never seem to improve, and they worry about how such students will deal with conflicts after college.(这个问题在大一新生中最为突出;住房专业人士说,随着学生临近毕业,他们看到情况有所改善,但有些人似乎从未改善过,他们担心这些学生毕业后将如何处理冲突。)”
根据倒数第二段中的““Things are posted on someone’s wall on Facebook like: Oh, my roommate kept me up all night studying,” says Dana Pysz, an assistant director at the University of California, Los Angeles. “It’s a different way to express their conflict to each other, consequently creating even more conflicts as complaints go public.”(加州大学洛杉矶分校(University of California, Los Angeles)的副主任达纳·皮兹(Dana Pysz)说:“Facebook上有人的留言墙上会贴着这样的内容:哦,我的室友让我整晚都在学习。”“这是一种向彼此表达冲突的不同方式,因此,随着投诉的公开,会产生更多的冲突。”)”可知,Dana Pysz认为将冲突发布到Facebook上会产生更多的冲突,由此可知,Dana Pysz不支持将冲突发布到媒体上。故选A项。
根据尾段“Administrators point to parents who have fixed their children’s problems in their entire lives. Now in college, the children lack the skills to attend to even modest conflicts. Some parents continue to interfere (干涉) on campus.(管理人员指出,有些父母一辈子都在解决孩子的问题。现在在大学里,孩子们缺乏处理即使是适度冲突的技能。一些家长继续干涉校园事务。)”可知,有些父母一辈子在帮着孩子解决孩子的问题,到了大学还继续干涉孩子的校园事务,正式由于家长的过渡干预导致孩子们自己解决冲突的能力缺失,由此可推断,家长应该教给孩子处理冲突的技巧,而不是一味的去干预。故选D项。
