If you’re feeling in the mood for grilled food but don’t have a barbecue, then deciding what product to purchase can be a bit difficult. So to help you get a better understanding of just some of the choices available, here’s our guide to buying a new BBQ.
Charcoal vs Gas
The first decision is how your BBQ is going to be powered. There are essentially two main choices: the traditional way with charcoal, or the quick and convenient way with gas. For those who get frustrated with the process of lighting coals and waiting for them to reach the desired temperature, then gas is the easy option. It’s clean and gets up to temperature in an instant. But for many, the main fun of a barbecue lies in the back-to-basics cooking that hot coal brings natural barbecue fire. You’ll also find a far greater range of charcoal barbecues.
Size
For anyone who likes to throw a garden party with a busy barbecue at the centre of the action there are some vast grills (烤架) available. But unless you’re regularly feeding the masses, then these BBQ beasts can be impractical. Smaller meals are better suited to smaller equipment, so be realistic about the size that best suits you.
Open grill or lid
While facing the barbecue selection of your nearest retailer, you’ll notice that some of them have lids. These will usually be round and will make you pay more than the lidless options. But if you want the benefit of being able to cook larger items over a longer period of time, such as a whole chicken, then a lid will be essential.
1. Which BBQ is suitable for Jack, who likes back-to-basics cooking and often invites friends to the garden party
A. Gas barbecue in small size. B. Gas barbecue in big size.
C. Charcoal barbecue with big grills. D. Charcoal barbecue with small grills.
2. What is the difference between the open grill and the one with a lid
A. The open grill costs more. B. The open grill looks superior.
C. The open grill is more reliable. D. The open grill is less suitable for larger items.
3. Which column of the magazine is the passage most likely selected from
A. Lifestyle. B. Business. C. Culture. D. Sports.

Mitchel Wu creates interesting stories using toy photography, a relatively new art form. He’s taken photos for an impressive list of clients, including Disney, Marvel, Hot Wheels, and Hasbro. There’s no limit to creativity, and Mitchel proves it through his unique work, providing a one-of-a-kind experience for clients worldwide.
While toy photography dates back to the 1800s, it didn’t gain popularity until the 1970s. Around this time, a man by the name of David Levinthal became the father of miniature(微型画)photography.
Over time, it evolved into a global phenomenon mostly involving action figures and pop culture imagery. It’s a diverse art form containing many themes and story ideas. Many artists draw inspiration from popular sources such as Disney movies, Star Wars, and Pokemon characters. With toy photography, the viewers, completely immersed in the story, feel like they’re actually there, in a different land.
“For me, toy photography is really all about storytelling,” Mitchel says. “Storytelling is what makes an image impactful, so my goal is to have my image just stop you in your tracks and make you think ‘Wow, what’s going on here ’”
Mitchel was a wedding photographer in the beginning. In 2015, he realized that he needed to find something else. Right around the same time, his nephew who photographed toys as a hobby said, “Uncle Mitch, why don’t you bring your camera and shoot some toys ”
Once he tried it out, he got hooked immediately. His nephew lent him a couple of Stormtrooper action figures, and from the very first click of the shutter(快门), he found it was something incredible.
What began as a hobby quickly became a new-found career for Mitchel. It’s yet another story that motivates us to pursue our dreams because you never know where they’ll take you.
It seems the only limits are the ones you create for yourself. Mitchel tries to keep breaking those limits and learn new techniques in his exciting career path. His story shows that you can create your path in life by following your heart and using your imagination.
4. Which of the following is true according to the first three paragraphs

D. Toy photography was widely recognized more than 200 years ago.

6. What does toy photography mean to Mitchel
A. It brings him a great fortune.
B. It only serves to limit his creativity.
C. It is a way of telling his own stories.
D. It enables him to follow his new passion.
7. What message does Mitchel’s story convey
A. Great hopes make great men.
B. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
C. The longest journey begins with the first step.
D. Behind one minute on stage is ten years of practice.

Climate change is an ongoing and ever-present threat to the Earth and all living things upon it. Unchecked industrialism and the burning of fossil fuels have resulted in the creation of harmful greenhouse gases. Human greed has led to massive deforestation and clearcutting of forests to make way for farmland. Pollution blocks our rivers, lakes, and oceans. The point of no return may be fast approaching.
After decades of harmful actions, many governments and businesses are now struggling to find ways to lessen some of their destructive effects and reach net-zero, which means not adding to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. One of the ways they proposed was the extensive tree-planting. The UK government, for example, has set out its plan to plant 30,000 hectares of trees annually so as to absorb carbon dioxide.
However, according to Oxfam, a British charity devoted to helping people in poor countries, those plans never bore fruit. It issued clear and strong warnings against them—the area needed for a tree-planting project of this scale to successfully lower carbon emissions to net-zero is estimated at 1.6 billion hectares, which is an area five times the size of India. That means the project would intrude(侵占)on the land presently needed to grow enough crops to feed the world’s expanding population.
Such a massive campaign of turning farmland into forest could give rise to a global interruption to agriculture, and cause food prices to rise by as much as 80% by 2050. In a world where millions of people are already going hungry, this could have disastrous results. By trying to save the planet, governments and businesses may cause many millions of people to die of starvation. This paradox (悖论)perfectly illustrates the phrase “damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.”
8. The author mentions the UK government to show _________.
A. the outbreak of climate disasters has its economic reasons
B. there is still some doubt whether the UK can reach net-zero
C. countries and companies are trying to deal with climate change
D. net-zero makes sense only when all countries make joint efforts
9. What is Oxfam’s attitude towards the extensive tree-planting
A. Confident. B. Critical. C. Favorable. D. Unclear.
10. What is the paradox associated with the plans for tree-planting
A. A vast area of the forest would burn down instead.
B. Bigger forests could result in a population explosion.
C. India would lose 1.6 billion hectares of agricultural land.
D. Planting trees could lead to the starvation of millions of people.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The Catch-22 of Net-zero
B. New Responses to Climate Change
C. Planting Trees for a Better-fed World
D. The Control of Greenhouse Gas Emission
D
The complexities of human relations are difficult enough for adults to identify—and they have at least some idea of the rules. Children have yet to learn those rules. Infants (婴儿) are, nevertheless, able quickly to identify close relationships between other people, and thus to build up a map of the social world around them.
How this comes out has puzzled sociologists for decades. In a paper just published in Science, Ashley Thomas of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology proposes a partial answer: saliva (唾液) shared by kissing, for example, or the common use of an eating or drinking tool.
The researchers came to the conclusion based on a series of studies. They selected two groups of several dozen youngsters. One was a set of babies aged between eight and ten months. The other was a group of toddlers aged between 16 and 18 months.
Each infant was shown a video of an adult interacting with a puppet (木偶) followed by another video of that puppet in trouble while the same adult, and also a stranger, looked on. When the interaction in the first video appeared to involve the sharing of saliva—puppet and adult taking constant bites from an orange in turn—both sets of infants looked mainly at that same adult in the second video, and not the stranger. When the interaction in the first video was friendly but less thick, such as passing a ball back and forth, the infants had equal expectations of both adults when shown the second video.
The conclusion was reconfirmed by subsequently replacing the puppet with a different one and repeating the second test. In this case the children showed no consistent expectation about which adult would intervene to relieve the puppet’s trouble.
Conducting her experiment by video enabled Dr. Thomas to cast her search for trial participants beyond Massachusetts. She nevertheless decided, in this first instance, to limit things to the United States. Future runs, she hopes, will reach beyond that country’s borders.
12. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Adult’s identifying human relations.
B. Children’s learning interpersonal rules.
C. Babies’ getting to know new things around them.
D. Infants’ recognizing relationships between people.
13. Which can best describe the research process
A. Well-designed. B. Time-consuming.
C. Tightly-scheduled. D. Risk-taking.
14. What can the tests illustrate
A. Infants tend to believe in adults blindly. B. Saliva sharing is indicative of closeness.
C. Infants are competent to show sympathy. D. Saliva sharing acts as a comfort for infants.
15. What was Dr. Thomas’s expectation for the future tests
A. An extension of age group. B. More advanced equipment.
C. A broader regional coverage. D. Diverse experimental methods.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The student syndrome (综合症) is a phenomenon where a large number of students put off doing things until right before the deadline (最后期限). ____16____ Since it involves unnecessary delay, it usually leads to negative results for those who display it. They will feel stressed and overwhelmed, and the task seems to be never finished.
To avoid the student syndrome, you should figure out what’s causing you to delay in the first place, and then use some techniques. ____17____
Break your tasks into small and manageable steps. For example, if you need to write an article, you can start with small steps, such as figuring out the title, creating a rough description, and finding five appropriate academic sources. Keep it in mind that if the project in question is large, then you generally shouldn’t worry about figuring out all the steps to it from the very beginning. ____18____ Then find new steps as you make progress along the way. This helps you avoid feeling upset and getting stuck.
____19____ For example, if you have a single deadline for completing a large research paper, set additional deadlines along the way for completing specific parts of it. These additional deadlines to be met will make the very large research paper more manageable and less frightening.
Find your productivity cycles. People’s ability to complete certain tasks is different based on a great many factors such as the time of day. For example, it may be the case that you’re best able to concentrate on difficult tasks early in the morning, before you’ve started dealing with emails or minor administrative aspects of your job. ____20____
Follow these techniques and you are unlikely to wait until the last minute.
A. Establish specific goals for yourself.
B. Set intermediate (中间的) deadlines for yourself.
C. They can help you take action in a timely manner.
D. This phenomenon can be considered to be a form of delay.
E. You should take this into account when scheduling your work.
F. Instead, start by finding the first few steps that you need to take.
G. You should change your environment to make it easier for yourself to get started.

Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch (女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition (试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye ” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you ” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!

【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

Each infant was shown a video of an adult interacting with a puppet (木偶), followed by another video of that puppet in trouble while the same adult, and also a stranger, looked on.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C

【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Future runs, she hopes, will reach beyond that country’s borders.( 她希望,未来的研究将超越国界。)”可知,Thomas博士希望未来的试验能覆盖更广泛的区域。故选C项。

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced.

As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
A few days later, the big day for the play arrived. The performance was a great success. Molly’s performance as the witch was as impressive as Maye’s as the princess, and the applause from the audience continued, which made Molly cry with joy.
