Here are some beautiful classic road-tripping routes in California.
Pacific Coast Highway(PCH)
There are wonderful options including dramatic sea cliffs, sun-soaked surfing towns, playful harbor seals and the Golden Gate Bridge. You'd better avoid driving here in the spring and summer months, when the central and northern coastline can be socked in by fog and the rainy season can lead to landslides. Instead, September and October will yield the sunniest skies and some of the best weather as you spend a week checking this beauty off your bucket list.
Highway 49(Hwy 49)
That highway number is significant: It is in memory of the 49 people who came seeking for fortune in California's original Gold Rush. Today the route winds through Gold Country towns such as Placerville and Nevada City, past ghostly Old West mines and Victorian buildings. Hwy 49 comes mighty close to Yosemite National Park (15 miles) and Lake Tahoe (75 miles), both of which are good places for family camping.
Route 66
Enjoy your trip on America' s."Mother Road" which brought Dust Bowl refugees, Holly-wood starlets and hippies to California. Drive slowly from the desert to the Pacific Ocean, pulling up alongside retro relics, sleeping in a tipi hotel and fueling up in neon-lit diners.
Avenue of the Giants
The incredible 32-mile road at Humboldt Redwoods State Park is canopied by the world' s tallest trees. It' s one of the most justifiably celebrated drives in California. The best time is in the morning when sunlight glints off dew-drenched ferns. Among the majestic(壮观的) woods along the Avenue, there is an interesting four-sided hearth(灶台), designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan. Walking trails wind through all the woods for proper tree-hugging.

When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of my life. I was a total outsider, bullied(欺凌)at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.
Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.
After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one’ I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone' s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.

My First Marathon
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P. E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was " not athletic ".
The idea that I was " not athletic " stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) become untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted !
At mile 3, I passed a sign :" GO FOR IT, RUNNERS !"
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving !
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished ! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself ;move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a" marathon winner "

Dolphin (海豚) are not fish, but warm-blooded animals. They live in groups, and speak to each other in their own language. In this way they are like other animals, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals. Their brain is nearly the same size as our own, and they live a long time-at least twenty or thirty years.
Like some animals, dolphins use sound to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw. Strangely, dolphins seem to like man, and for thousands of years there have been stories about the dolphin and its friendship with people.
There is a story about sailors in the 19th century. In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learnt to look for a dolphin called Jack. From 1871 to 1903 Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. Then in 1903 a passenger on a boat called The Penguin shot and wounded Jack. He recovered (恢复) and or nine years more continued to guide all ships through the area-except for The Penguin.
Today, some people continue to kill dolphins, but many countries of the world now protect them and in these places it is against the law to kill them.
32. Dolphins are different from many other land animals in that they
A. live in groups

34. By telling the story of Jack the writer wanted to show that
A. dolphins are friendly and clever

D. dolphins should be protected by law

One of my sisters who had worked abroad for 10 years returned home for her vacation.
All the family members were happy. My parents gave her a simple celebration(庆祝) and prepared food for us to share.
While staying with them, an idea came to me. We could have a family outing on the beach ! All of my siblings(兄弟姐妹)agreed! It had been a long time since we went outing last time and it was the chance to do it again. We set off the next day.
The weather was nice and many people were enjoying the seawater. I ran towards the water and felt the coldness of it. My siblings placed our things in a big cottage(村舍). They brought many foods and planned to cook fish and pork meat. Everyone in the cottage was busy preparing for food while the children went to swim.I couldn’t swim though I was already a teenager. That was why I just played in the shallow(浅的) part of the sea.
On the other side of the beach, I saw a small fishing boat. I never tried to ride on it, but while I was looking at it, I was eager to(渴望) take a ride on the boat. Without a second thought, I went to the boat alone. I paid the fisherman for using his boat and started to push it towards the sea. In my mind, I would not go to the deep part. A few minutes later, I made it float(漂浮) on water and I enjoyed it ! I made it move forward and kept it afloat for several minutes. Suddenly, the seawater became disturbing(令人不安的) and large waves surrounded me, I couldn’t control the boat anymore.

My boat was pulled towards the deeper part. I was afraid and nervous ! I shouted loudly to ask my siblings for help. However, none of them heard me because they were too far away from me. I began to cry. Suddenly, a big wave came and I was thrown into the water. I didn’t know how to swim. I struggled in the seawater and kept on waving my hands. That was the last moment I could remember.
When I came to life, I was lying in hospital. My parents were beside me. I asked my mother what happened. She said my brother saw me while I was waving my hands. I was rescued by him and they immediately sent me to the hospital. I was grateful that I was still alive. My mother said we would have another celebration for another life given to me. I told them the celebration would never be held at the beach.
