One afternoon when I walked out the supermarket, I found an old man who struggled with two bags of food. It was very cold. I guessed he must have a long walk. I stopped the car near him and put the window down to ask if he needed a ride. With a little hesitation, he did accept.
After he got settled in the car, my husband and I introduced ourselves, but he didn’t say a word. During the drive, we tried to make him more comfortable with some small talk. His home was more than two miles away, so it would have been a difficult walk for anyone, let alone an old man carrying bags.
When we pulled up outside his door, the first thing he asked is “How much money do you want ” “Nothing, we just wanted to help,” we answered. The shock and relief on this man’s face was actually sad, because we should be able to live in a world where it isn’t shocking to have someone help you out of the goodness of their heart without expecting something in return. He was overwhelmed. Tears in his eyes, he said “Thank you!” over and over to me after realizing we truly didn’t want anything, which made me feel proud.
My only words to him were, sir, I hope this helped you out and have a good week. These simple acts of kindness are the types of kindnesses that anyone, anywhere can do. It doesn’t cost a cent. Just be aware of the world happening around you. There is always someone who needs something - a door held, a bag carried...the opportunities are endless.

C. He decided to introduce himself to us. D. He wanted to show his kindness for us.
7. What can we learn according to the passage
A. Kindness doesn’t cost a cent. B. The acts of kindness should be great.
C. Helping others makes people sad. D. There is always a chance for kindness.

He Zehui, a Chinese nuclear (核能的) physicist, achieved great things in physics and became an outstanding scientist.
Her family is famous for producing three famous women scientists, including her two sisters. She graduated from Tsinghua University in 1936 with a degree in physics, and then went on to study at the Technical University of Berlin, where she was the top in her class, outperforming her future husband Qian Sanqiang-China’s “father of the atomic bomb”. In 1940, she earned a doctor’s degree in Engineering.
The couple made great discoveries in the field of uranium fission (铀核裂变) , which drew global attention and gained them worldwide recognition, marking a milestone in the development of China’s experimental fission physics. Many Western media called the couple the “Marie Curie and Pierre Curie of China”.
As one of the pioneers in nuclear science and technology in China, Professor He contributed a great deal to nuclear physics. He and her research group took the lead in building China’s first nuclear reactor and accelerator (加速器). She was awarded the first Award of the National Prize of Natural Sciences for making outstanding achievements in supporting the national program of nuclear weapon development.
Throughout her career, He went through many difficulties, and was always on the front lines of China’s science-related work. She published dozens of papers yet placed little value on personal fame. The world’s top physicists recognized her as a famous scientist, “Chinese Madame Curie”.
He passed away in Beijing in 2011 at the age of 97, nearly 20 years after Qian Sanqiang. She devoted herself to science, living a simple life, always instructing young researchers and maintaining the highest standards that she had always valued. She loved her country and science; to both she is now an example.

Dopamine (多巴胺) is often considered as the source of pleasure. But that’s not quite what it does. Dopamine is what makes us desire things. And it’s that desire that gives us the motivation to get up and do things.
In fact, your brain considers something more important than others mainly depending on how much dopamine it’s expecting to get. If an activity releases a lot of dopamine, you’ll be motivated to repeat it, over and over. So which behavior releases dopamine Any activity where you expect there’s a possible reward releases it.
And in today’s digital society, we are flooding our brains with unnaturally high amounts of dopamine on a daily basis, even if we don’t know it. Some examples of high dopamine behavior include: visiting social media websites, playing video games, etc.
And you might think, “Oh so what It’s not like it’s harming me in any way.” But you’d be wrong. Our bodies have a biologically balanced system. Whenever an imbalance occurs, our body adapts to it. Basically, your brain gets used to having high levels of dopamine and those levels become your new normal. Thus, you develop a dopamine tolerance. This can be a huge problem because the things that don’t give you as much dopamine don’t interest you any longer. That’s why people tend to prefer playing video games or surfing the Internet, compared to studying or working on their business.
But it is possible to make doing difficult things feel easier. Separate yourself from the unnaturally high amounts of dopamine, or at least expose yourself to it far less frequently. Only then will normal, everyday, low dopamine activities become exciting again and you’ll be able to do them for longer. That’s why you might want to limit your phone and computer usage, along with other high dopamine-releasing behavior.
We are all dopamine addicts to a certain extent. And that’s a good thing because dopamine motivates us to achieve our goals and improve ourselves. But it’s up to you to decide where you’re going to get your dopamine.
12. When is dopamine released
A. When tough things come into being. B. When we are encouraged to do things.
C. When we take pleasure in the behavior. D. When possible rewards can be obtained.
13. What can we learn from the passage
A. Dopamine does great harm to our body. B. It’s difficult for our body to keep the balance.
C. Video games produce more dopamine than study. D. Dopamine tolerance keeps us away from social media.
14. What is the purpose of the fifth paragraph
A. To explain why dopamine is harmful. B. To introduce the effects of dopamine.
C. To stress the importance of dopamine. D. To offer solutions to dopamine tolerance.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward dopamine
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Concerned. D. Negative.

Two fast friends were Willie Brown and his little dog Bounce. Willie could never think of taking a walk without Bounce. Cake and play were equally shared between them. Willie taught his dog many running tricks and often said that Bounce could do almost anything in the world but talk. There came a time, however, when Bounce really told Willie’s father something, though he could not talk. Let me tell you how he did this.
It was on a bright summer afternoon. Willie had strolled with Bounce down to the river, which was not more than two blocks from his father’s store. Willie began to throw stones into the water, and to watch the ripples as they made one circle after another. Bounce lay on the grass, watching the flies that buzzed around his nose, and catching any that came too near. There were some logs floating in the river near the store. Willie jumped upon one of them, to see if he could throw a stone across the river.
He drew back, and sent the stone with all his might. Just as it left his hand, the log turned, and he fell into the water. He was very much frightened, for he did not know how to swim, and there was no one to hear, though he called as loud as he could for help.
Poor little Bounce gave a great yelp of distress. If he had been a big water dog, he could have jumped in and brought his master out. He ran up and down the bank two or three times, barking, looking first at Willie and then around.
Suddenly he started running, as fast as he could.
