Schools help protect kids’ mental (心理的) health in many ways. Some states in the US let kids take mental
health days. Should schools offer mental health days Here’s what some students have to say.
Bibi Tooren, 11
Schools should give kids days off for mental health, because mental health is an important part of overall (整 体的) health. If you don’t feel well, it will have a big influence on your ability to focus. Kids get stressed with
long school days. Plus, kids don’t have much experience dealing with mental health crises (危机).
Nugg Canales, 8
Kids should get mental health days off from school. Sometimes, we need to stay at home and play games to calm our minds. Some schools don’t allow music, and I need soft music to make me feel good about myself and
the world. If you take a mental health day, you should not make up work because it adds stress to your life.
Hailey Young, 12
The weekend was created to give us time off, and we children need to learn to better manage our time. We hardly get our schoolwork done in the five schooldays we get. Plus, schools would need students to make up mental health days. They would probably do so during our real breaks: in summer vacation or winter vacation.
Another thing is that, for some kids, school might be safe.
Johnny Cabel, 9
I don’t think schools should give students days off for their mental health. Having too many days off can have a bad influence on grades. And many students’ parents have to go to work. If students get too many days off,
they might get left home too much. This could make some students’ mental health problems worse.

Born in the 2000s, what do you think of your generation Young, creative, connected, global smart, maybe
good-looking But what do other people think about your generation
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the phone than the world around you. They see you as the “face-down generation” and wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too
busy texting and taking selfies (自拍) to become successful in real life or “IRL”, as you would say
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoiled and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to do everything

Does the face-down generation need a heads-up Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people volunteer to serve their communities than ever. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to
school.

Tom and Becky walked down a winding passage inside a cave, holding their candles high. They saw names and dates written on the wall with candle smoke by other visitors to the cave. Becky and Tom read some of them as they walked along. They were talking so much that it was a little while before they noticed they were now in a part of the cave that had no writing on the wall. They used candle smoke to write their own names on the rock and
walked on.
Soon they came to a place where a little stream of water was running. Over the years the cave wall had been shaped by the running stream, and it looked like a frozen waterfall. Tom went behind it and lit it up with his candle so that Becky could see it better. Behind the stone waterfall he found an opening in the rock, leading downwards. At once he wanted to explore it. Becky agreed and together they started to walk down into the earth. They wound this way and that, far into the cave, making smoke marks here and there to show the way back. This
was exciting. They would have a lot to tell their friends above when they returned.
In one place, they found a huge, open space full of shining stalactites(钟乳石), as long and thick as a man’s leg. They walked around it and left by one of the many passages that opened into it. The next place they found was full of bats. There were thousands of them. The candlelight woke them up, and they flew at the candle flames at once. Tom knew this was dangerous and took Becky’s hand to hurry her away. He pulled her into the first opening he found. And none too soon, one of the bats put out Becky’s candle with its wings as she ran away. The
bats chased them for quite a long way, but Tom and Becky ran into every new passage that they came to, and at
