For Peter Tabichi, Sunday was a day of “firsts”—the first time he had travelled so far and his first time on a plane. But for Africa, it was the most influential “first” of all—the first time a teacher there was awarded the Global Teacher Prize.
“I feel great,” Tabichi said after accepting the Prize. The Prize, awarded by the Varkey Foundation, honors an outstanding teacher every year, and includes a $1 million prize.
You might already be able to guess how he plans to spend that prize. This is, after all, a man who chose to teach kids at a poorly-equipped, underfunded school in a remote Kenyan village and give 80 percent of his salary to the poor. Brother Peter, as he’s called, surprised no one by announcing that he planned to use the million dollars from his win to improve the school and offer food to the poor. The local community where food shortage is a major source of conflict could also benefit from that awarded money.
Tabichi teaches high schoolers science at a remote part of Kenya’s Rift Valley. Despite having one computer, a poor Internet connection and a student-teacher ratio of 58:1, Tabichi started a “talent nurturing club” and expanded the school’s science club. He helped students design’ research projects of high quality so that many now qualify for national competitions. His students have taken part in international science competitions and won an award from the Royal Society of Chemistry after using local plant life to produce electricity. Tabichi also gives struggling students one-to-one coaching in science, visiting students’ homes and meeting their families to identify the challenges they face.
Accepting the prize, Tabichi said: “This prize gives my students a chance. It tells the world that they can do anything. Africa will produce scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs whose names will be one day famous in every corner of the world.”
4. What can we learn about the Global Teacher Prize
A. It is presented annually. B. It offers a prize of $1 billion.
C. It is given to African teachers. D. It influences people worldwide.
5. What did Tabichi plan to do with the prize money
A. To set up a charity and help the community.
B. To build a school and pay students’ fees.
C. To have a trip and visit many scenic spots.
D. To better school facilities and feed the poor.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Tabichi’s determination to face the challenges.
B. Tabichi’s efforts to equip students with science.
C. Tabichi’s troubles in operating the science clubs
D. Tabichi’s passion for teaching gifted students science
7. Which of the following can best describe Tabichi
A. Professional and humorous. B. Talented and selfless.
C. Knowledgeable and sensitive. D. Generous and ambitious.
C
Children are often exposed to diet culture from a young age and its negative impacts can be long-lasting, according to Virginia Smith, author of a new book titled Fat Talk, Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture.
“Kids, at a very young age, start to become aware of body shaming,” Smith said. “The main factors of children’s future eating disorder (饮食失调) are kids’ being ashamed of their weight and their history of dieting in childhood.”
In Fat Talk, Smith argues that one way parents can fight back against this is to take a fresh look at the word “fat”. “We can understand ‘fat’ as just a neutral body descriptor, just like saying tall or short or brown hair, black hair…” Smith said. “If your child in a bigger body comes to you, and he says, ‘Am I fat ’ you should be honest with him and say, ‘You’re fat. And there’s definitely nothing wrong with that. We love your body just the way it is.’”
Another suggestion from Smith is for parents to change conversations with and in front of children at home. “We can say I’m not going to shame my body in front of my kids and I’m going to celebrate bodies in all shapes and sizes,” Smith recommended. David Anderson, a parenting expert, added, “So if you have a child who’s in a bigger body, talk about their strengths.” David continued, “Helping our children concentrate on how our bodies work, how they allow us to achieve our goals… these are things we can remind our kids about every single day.”
Often diet conversations about size can be unavoidable for children, but David said parents can act as a shield between children and some of the most harmful messages behind diet culture. But as children grow older, David encourages parents to be honest with kids about their own struggles and not to pretend they know everything and that kids know nothing about diet culture.
8. What might contribute to children’s future eating disorder
A. Body shape and peer pressure. B. Body image and parenting style.
C. Body change and food preference. D. Body shame and dieting experience.
9. What can be learned from paragraph 3
A. Kids should make peace with their body image.
B. Kids should take pride in being overweight.
C. Parents should teach their kids honesty.
D. Parents should give “fat” a positive definition.
10. What should kids focus on according to David Anderson
A. Their body functions. B. Their individual characters.
C. Their physical appearance. D. Their career achievements.
11. What does the underlined word “shield” in the last paragraph mean
A. Editor. B. Supporter. C. Protector. D. Connector.
D
Why do we laugh at movies like Office Space or shows like The Office What’s so funny about work
Steve from California shared. “During a meeting, my boss praised our colleague, saying how handsome he is. The team felt awkwardly surprised, until my boss corrected, ‘No — it’s great how hands-on he is!’ Everyone laughed, easing the tense atmosphere from the meeting. ‘Well, he is handsome, too!’ I defended jokingly, and we al laughed again!”
Office may seem like a serious place. But, according to a study, introducing some laughter into work life can contribute to our well-being and productivity. In fact, finding humor is one of the practices we teach students in our online course. The funny stories they shared remind us that a little playfulness goes a long way toward a more enjoyable work life.
Laughter serves to create and strengthen social bonds in humans — as well as in our chimp (黑猩猩) ancestors. One evolutionary theory claims that laughter first appeared in these ancestors as a response to signal that they are safe at present and a relief to others after something unexpected occurs. This also has implications in modern times, and it may explain why colleagues who laugh more together tend to enjoy a more safe or comfortable environment and a greater sense of unity among teams.
Feeling comfortable in our work environment can enable us to think openly and take risks — a basis for finding creative solutions at work, contributing to our productivity. According to one study, managers who use humor at work are more likely to reach their unit’s target goals. What’s more, employees who say that their manager “makes us laugh at ourselves when we are too serious” or “uses humor to take the edge off during stressful periods” are more likely to trust their manager, and feel a sense of belonging at work.
Of course, humor isn’t always called for — particularly if it’s a distraction from our tasks or keeps us from seeing and addressing real problems at work. But in many situations, sharing jokes with colleagues and finding humor in the chaos can make work a little more fun.
12. What can we learn from Steve’s sharing in the second paragraph
A. The meeting was always filled with laughter.
B. He helped relieve tension during the meeting.
C. The team was greatly frightened at his words.
D. The boss thought his colleague quite handsome.
13. What is the original function of laughter among our chimp ancestors
A. To create a comfortable atmosphere.
B. To better their bonds with humans.
C. To unite other members in the team.
D To inform partners of their present safety.
14. What is the benefit of a manager’s using humor at work
A. The company is likely to make more profits.
B. The company will attract more job applicants.
C. The employees will feel more included at work.
D. The employees are more likely to work overtime.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. How to Strengthen Our Sense of Humor
B How to Create a Fun Work Environment
C. How Humor Can Improve Our Work Life
D. How Important Being a Humorous Worker Is

High school sports. It’s about the biggest thing in our town of Verden, population six hundred. And sports are important in our family. Both of our sons were high-school athletes. So I shouldn’t have been surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ basketball team. But I was because she has Down syndrome (唐氏综合症). My wife Jennifer and I never told Lauren that she was different, treating her like our other children. We didn’t want her to feel that way.
“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” Lauren flew into my arms when I came in from work. “That’s nice, honey,” I replied without a second thought, figuring she meant outside—on the driveway. But Jennifer’s worried face showed I’d missed something. Jennifer spoke slowly, her tone steady. “She meant she’s joining the girls’ high-school basketball team, the Lady Tigers.”
The next afternoon, I parked in front of the school gym. Inside, Coach Durant greeted us, “We’re glad Lauren came out for the team. She matters to us!” Lauren stood alone at the other end of the court, shooting free throws. No other girl on the court smiled widely as Lauren did. After every shot, Lauren yelled excitedly, “Woo hoo!”, not caring whether she made the basket.
Mid-November, the season’s first game arrived. I settled into a seat with the rest of my family. Moments later, a train of girls went out of the locker room. Last in line was Lauren, grabbing a practice ball. But before Lauren took her warm-up shot, she searched the stands (看台). Spotting us, she tucked (抱) the ball under her arm and waved broadly.
The game got off to a good start but soon Verden was behind. Even though Lauren wasn’t playing, she was following the movement on the court attentively. She hit her knees each time the opposing team scored; she waved her arms each time Verden shot. Just less than two minutes were left, and Verden was behind by 17 points. Coach called a time-out (暂停). Then the announcer’s voice came. “Number thirty-three, Lauren Wray, in for the Lady Tigers.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Lauren was in the game.

The moment the game ended, Lauren rushed to meet us in the stands. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________名校联考联合体2023年秋季高一年级第二次联考

Often, diet conversations about size can be unavoidable for children, but David said parents can act as a shield between children and some of the most harmful messages behind diet culture.
A. Editor. B. Supporter. C. Protector. D. Connector.

And there’s definitely nothing wrong with that. We love your body just the way it is.’(如果你的孩子体型较大,他问你,‘我胖吗?’
根据第四段“David Anderson, a parenting expert, added, “So if you have a child who’s in a bigger body, talk about their strengths.” David continued, “Helping our children concentrate on how our bodies work, how they allow us to achieve our goals… these are things we can remind our kids about every single day.”(育儿专家大卫·安德森补充道,“所以,如果你的孩子体型较大,就谈谈他们的优势。”David继续说道,“帮助我们的孩子专注于我们的身体是如何工作的,它们是如何让我们实现目标的……这些都是我们每天都可以提醒孩子的事情。”)”可知,大卫·安德森认为,孩子们应该关注身体是如何工作,让人们实现目标的,即孩子们应该关注的是身体功能。故选A。
11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“Often, diet conversations about size can be unavoidable for children, but David said parents can act as a shield between children and some of the most harmful messages behind diet culture. But as children grow older, David encourages parents to be honest with kids about their own struggles and not to pretend they know everything and that kids know nothing about diet culture.(通常,关于体型的饮食对话对孩子来说是不可避免的,但大卫说,父母可以充当孩子与饮食文化背后一些最有害信息之间的shield。但随着孩子们年龄的增长,大卫鼓励父母对孩子们坦诚相待,不要假装他们什么都知道,孩子们对饮食文化一无所知)”可知,关于体型的对话不可避免,但是父母可以充当屏障,让孩子尽量远离饮食文化背后的有害信息,当孩子们长大,再对孩子们坦诚相待。由此可知,划线单词表示“屏障”,与protector意义相近。故选C。

D. To inform partners of their present safety.
14. What is the benefit of a manager’s using humor at work
A. The company is likely to make more profits.
B. The company will attract more job applicants.
C. The employees will feel more included at work.
D. The employees are more likely to work overtime.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The game got off to a good start, but soon Verden was behind.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The moment the game ended, Lauren rushed to meet us in the stands. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Lauren was in the game. As she stepped onto the court, a mix of excitement and uncertainty filled the gym. The opposing team’s players exchanged puzzled glances, unaware of what to expect. However, Lauren’s determination was evident. She wore a beaming smile, ready to face the challenge. The crowd fell silent as the ball was passed to Lauren. With a surprising move, she navigated the ball towards the basket, attempting a shot. The crowd erupted into cheers, embracing the unexpected joy of witnessing Lauren’s tough spirit on the court.
The moment the game ended, Lauren rushed to meet us in the stands. Sweaty but overjoyed, she hugged each family member. The Lady Tigers may not have won the game, but Lauren’s courage and enthusiasm had won everyone’s hearts. The gym echoed with applause, not just for a basketball player, but for a young woman who defied expectations and demonstrated the true essence of sportsmanship. Lauren’s journey with the team became a source of inspiration, reminding our town that everyone, no matter their abilities, deserves a chance to shine on the court.
