Natalie Doan, 14, has always felt lucky to live in Rockaway, New York. Living just a few blocks from the beach, Natalie can see the ocean and hear the wave from her house. “It’s the ocean that makes Rockaway so special,” she says.
October 29, that ocean turned fierce(激烈的).That night, Hurricane Sandy attacked the East Coast, and Rockaway was hit especially hard. Fortunately, Natalie’s family ran away to Brooklyn shortly before the city’s bridge closed.
When they returned to Rockaway the next day, they found their neighborhood in ruins. Many of Natalie’s friends had lost their homes and were living far away. All around her, people were suffering, especially the old. Natalie’s school was so damaged that she had to go to a school in Brooklyn.
In the following few days, the men and women helping Rockaway recover encouraged Natalie. Volunteers came with lots of clothing and toys. Neighbors offered their spare time to help others rebuild. Teenagers climbed stairs to deliver water and food to people trapped in powerless high buildings.
“My mom tells me that I can’t control what happens to me,” Natalie says. “but I can always choose how I deal with it.”
Natalie’s choice was to help.

For many people, moths are dust - colored pests that eat our clothes and disturb us by flying around lights after dark. Not for artist Joseph Scheer. The pictures he creates bring out the beauty of moths, with colors, shapes, and patterns that have never been seen before so clearly. “Digital tools let you see things you'd never see just looking with your eyes,” Scheer says. Scheer's pictures have been displayed around the world, and one reaction is heard everywhere: “People insist, ‘No, that can't be a moth,’” says Scheer.
Scheer's work began with a moth hunt in the state of New York. Scheer would leave the lights on and the windows open overnight at his university office, and then collect the moths that had flown in. When the building cleaners at the university complained, he moved the hunt to his friend Mark Klingensmith's yard. They set up two lights shining over a plastic container on a white sheet. Then moths appeared from the darkness, flew into the sheet, and fell into the plastic container. “We got a different species every night,” Scheer says. “The patterns and colors were unbelievable.”
After the hunt, they used a powerful scanner to get detailed pictures of moths. Small moths presented special challenges.
The scanner records so much information that a single moth can take 20 minutes to scan. A scan of just two small moths fills an entire CD. All that information means the size of the picture can be increased by 2, 700 percent but still keep all the details and appear perfectly clear. You'd need a microscope to see the details shown in Scheer's prints.
Scheer's work is not only a new form of art. He has also made a valuable contribution to the record of the moths around him. He has helped identify more than a thousand different species. “Not from Alaska or the Amazon,” Klingensmith says. “All from one backyard.”
8. What do people mean by “No, that can't be a moth”
A. Scheer is highly skilled at drawing B. They don't like the pictures of moths
C. The moths in the pictures are too strange D. The pictures seem too beautiful to be moths'
9. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. How Scheer caught moths B. Scheer's working environment
C. How Scheer found moths' beauty D. Scheer's friendship with Klingensmith.
10. The figures mentioned in Paragraph 4 show that ________ .
A. local moths have bright colors and clear patterns
B. a microscope should be used to prepare the pictures
C. clear pictures result from much detailed information
D. high quality paint must be used to create the pictures
11. What does the author think of Scheer's work
A. It is a common form of art. B. It benefits research on moths.
C. It'll get popular in Alaska or the Amazon. D. It needs to overcome regional limitations.
D
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language
In a recent Wall Street journal article, technology policy expert A lec Ross argued that, within a decade or so. We’ll be able to communicate with one another via small earpieces with built-in microphones. That’s because technological progress is extremely rapid. It’s only a matter of time. Indeed, some parents are so convinced that this technology is imminent that they’re wondering if their kids should even learn a second language.
It’s true that an increase in the quantity and accuracy of the data loaded into computers make them cleverer at translating “No es bueno dormir mucho” as “It’s not good to sleep too much.” Replacing a word with its equivalent (同义词) in the target language is actually the “easy part of a translator’s job”. But even this seems to be a discouraging task for computers.
It’s so difficult for computers because translation doesn’t—or shouldn’t—involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, humans have to interpret a mass of information at the same time. Think about all the related clues that go into understanding an expression: volume, gesture, situation, and even your culture. All are likely to convey as much meaning as the words you use.
Therefore, we should doubt whether a machine is able to translate the world around us. If people from different cultures can offend each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better Unless engineers actually find a way to breathe a soul into a computer, undoubtedly when it comes to conveying and translation meaning using a natural language, a machine will never fully take our place.
12. What does the underlined word “imminent” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Confusing. B. Approaching. C. Helpful. D. Advanced.
13. Why is it hard for computers to replace a word with its equivalent (同义词)
A. The real meaning of words can vary.
B. Their data is not adequate (充足的) enough.
C. Their accuracy needs big improvement.
D. A soul hasn’t been breathed into them.
14. What view does the author hold about translation
A. Some machines will translate our world properly.
B. Slight difference mean little in translation.
C. Proper translation can be tough for humans.
D. Cultures deserve more attention than words used.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. A new language translating machine
B. Will Language Barrier (障碍) Actually Fall
C. Who Will Be a Better Translator
D Translation will become easier

That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice’s bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird ” “Of course, you can,” said her mother. “But you need to wait because I’ve no time to visit a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. One day, when Dora was back home from school, she saw a cage in the living room. In the cage was a beautiful blue bird. Her mother was standing next to the cage, smiling. “Oh, a bird!” Dora shouted happily. She ran to it and looked at it happily. “It’s a birthday gift for you,” said her mother “Thank you, Mom. I love it so much!” said Dora excitedly.
The following day, Dora invited her friends to come over to see her bird. All of her friends said it was a really beautiful bird and Dora was very glad to hear that. She and her friends played with the bird for a long time that day. Her friends all wished they could have such a bird as their pet.
Sadly, a few weeks later, Dora became sick. The doctor told her parents that she got the flu and had to say at home. In order not to make her friends sick, her parents asked her friends not to come to play with her. Dora felt very sad. How she wished her friends would come and visit her! But she knew her parents were right. She’d better stay alone. Since Dora had no one to play with, she could only play with her bird. However, she felt that her bird didn’t seem to be happy either.

Dora watched her bird in silence.

She created a website page matching survivors in need with people who wanted to help. In the coming months, her website page helped lots of kids: Christopher, who received a new basketball; Charlie, who got a new keyboard. Natalie also worked with other organizations to bring much-need supplies to Rockaway. Her efforts made her a famous person.

D. Translation will become easier
B 13. A 14. C 15. B
根据第四段的“It’s so difficult for computers because translation doesn’t—or shouldn’t—involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, humans have to interpret a mass of information at the same time.”(这对计算机来说是如此的困难,因为翻译不——或者不应该——只涉及翻译单词、句子或段落。 故选A项。
根据第四段关键句“And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, humans have to interpret a mass of information at the same time.”(为了从一个特定的表达中推断出意义,人类必须同时解释大量的信息。)和最后一段关键句“If people from different cultures can offend each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better ”(如果来自不同文化背景的人在没有意识到的情况下会冒犯对方,我们怎么能指望机器做得更好呢?)
分析文章,结合第一段内容“Wouldn’t it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language ”(去外国旅行而不用担心用另一种语言交流的头痛,不是很好吗?)和第二段的“In a recent Wall Street journal article, technology policy expert A lec Ross argued that, within a decade or so. We’ll be able to communicate with one another via small earpieces with built-in microphones.( 在《华尔街日报》最近的一篇文章中,技术政策专家A lec Ross认为,在10年左右的时间里。

vote on“对……
故填be reached。
故填who/that。
空格处填the与其后的number of构成固定短语,the number of表示…… 故填the。
故填more likely。

Dora is a seven-year-old girl. One day, when she visited her friend Alice, she saw a beautiful bird in a cage on the balcony of the house. Alice told her it was her new pet. “How beautiful it is!” said Dora. “I also want to have such a bird as my pet.”

Paragraph 1:
Dora watched her bird in silence. She found her bird kept looking out of the window. In the trees outside, many birds were playing gladly. She thought that perhaps her bird didn’t like kept in the cage at all. Just as she missed staying with her friends, it also wanted to go out to play like other birds. But before she got sick, she didn’t think a lot about her bird. Now Dora realized she shouldn’t selfishly take away its freedom for her own enjoyment.
Paragraph 2:
When her mother came inside, Dora told her mother about her decision. She said, “Mom, can you set my bird free ” Her mother was surprised and asked why. “I’m sure it also wants friends,” said Dora. Her mother agreed. She opened the cage and the bird cheerfully flew out of the window and disappeared soon. A few days later, Dora could play with her friends again. How excited she was! And when she looked out at the birds in the trees, she knew her bird must be very happy at that moment.
