One Saturday Maria and I had a 30-mile bike ride. It seemed perfect. We started at 7: 00 a. m. in beautiful spring weather. At10: 30 a. m., when we stopped for a rest, we both felt wonderful. And then a brisk wind came. That was when our perfect day began to change.
By noon, we knew a serious thunderstorm was coming. Dark clouds rolled from the south-west. The wind was picking up. There was no way to stay out of the storm. We would have to wait for it to stop, but where
Then things went from bad to worse. The temperature dropped suddenly. I looked up and saw the sky now turned dark green. Trees and crops were destroyed by the wind. No animals were in sight.
Then a blue car stopped beside our bikes. The driver shouted, "Get in!" She looked frightened, and so did we. We did as she said. That was when the hail(冰雹) started. Ice, the size of golf balls, hit the windows of the car.
She drove fast to the north. Maria and I looked back at the black sky. Maria screamed, "Tornado(龙卷风)!"It was so close that I could see trees, doors, and all kinds of other things that this "monster" swallowed(吞).
My heart moved up to my throat and was beating so hard. I thought it would jump out of my body. I had never been so frightened. We would never run faster than the tornado! The driver turned to us and said calmly, "There's an overpass(立交桥)ahead. We'll stay under it for protection."
When we parked, we jumped out of the car and ran to the wall of the overpass. Before I could count to 20, there came a loud noise. It sounded like a train passing overhead. Then, suddenly, it was over. We had made it.
Soon we were all laughing with relief. We were shaken but excited. What a story I would have to tell at school!

A bit of rain and wind in summer can be nice. But bad storms are a bit different.
Some of the worst storms are typhoons. Every year, about 80 typhoons hit different places around the world. The strongest ones are usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.
Why When lots of seawater gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates(蒸发)into the air. This makes the air hot, too. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then, cooler air around it rushes in to fill the space that is left. Once the air gets warmer, it starts to move more quickly and make wind. The wind goes in circles, and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 meters a second, typhoon begins.
A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye”. This is right in the middle of a typhoon and is calm. The eye of a typhoon can be about 40 kilometers wide. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast, and there are not many clouds in the eye. The other part of a typhoon is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest winds and hardest rains are.
Typhoons are very dangerous. They blow away houses and cars. And they can also kill people! Typhoons' hard rains are bad for farmers' fields. What should you do when a typhoon hits
Close all windows and stay away from them. If you're told to go to a safer place, do so right away.
Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bike!
Listen to the radio or watch TV for important information.
Cut away parts of trees that can be broken off by wind to stop them from doing more damage.
39.Maybe is one of the countries which are not often hit by typhoon.
A. America B. Australia C. China D. England
40.The speed of the wind depends on .
A. how old the air is B. how warm the air gets
C. how many mountains there are D. how much seawater there is
41. the eye of the typhoon, it moves.
A. The nearer the air is to; the slower B. The stronger the air is from; the faster
C. The nearer the air is to; the faster D. The farther the air is from; the slower
42.Which is the safest place when typhoon comes
A. In the eye of the typhoon. B. Under a big tree.
C. Inside your strong house. D. In a cave outside.

A young lady was driving a family car home with her father when they were caught in a heavy storm. Sand and stone were beating against the car window heavily. The young lady was a little afraid and asked her father, “What should I do, stop or keep driving ” Her father said calmly, “Keep driving.”

The young lady noticed that some cars and big trucks were pulling over to the side of the road. The young lady asked her father again if they should stop. But her father said nothing. So, she had to keep on driving. Ten minutes later, the storm started to become small and she could see a little more clearly.
After a couple of kilometers, she drove out of the storm. Moreover, the sun came out and the road ahead was dry. Her father told her to stop and get out of the car. “But why now, Father ” she asked in surprise. Her father said, “When you get out, you can look back at all the people in cars and big trucks that gave up and they are still in the storm. Now, your storm is over because you didn’t give up. “Don’t give up, even if you face the stronger. If you keep going, soon your “personal storms” will be over. Lightning is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena (现象). It is also one of the most deadly phenomena. A bolt of lightning is six times hotter than the surface (表面) of the sun and gives out 30, 000 amps of electricity (电). It can travel at 100, 000 kilometers per hour and has the ability to hit a target up to 40 kilometers away. About 1,000 people around the world are killed by lightning every year.
Only about ten percent of people struck (击中) by lightning will actually die, but the others are actually very badly injured (受伤), with burns, broken bones, blindness, deafness, paralysis, or memory loss. However, when the electricity passes through their brains (大脑), it can occasionally have unusual and even positive effects (积极作用). Some blind (瞎的) people have got their sight back after being struck by lightning. One woman said a psychological test showed her intelligence (智力) had greatly improved (提高) and one man said he could no longer feel cold at all and could go out in temperature below zero in just a T-shirt!
So what should you do to stay safe in a thunderstorm The most important rule is to stay inside, but do not go near phones, electrical appliances, plumbing or water. If you are stuck outside, do not take shelter under a tree. Instead, roll (卷) yourself up into a ball on the ground as small as possible.
