二、阅读理解
(2022上·福建莆田·九年级统考期末)Scientists are not alone in the fight against the novel coronavirus (新型冠状病毒), as new technologies and creative products are giving them a hand. Here are some examples.
Big data
Our smart phones send data to telecom companies around the clock, telling these companies where we have been and where we are going. Chinese telecom companies provide government with this data. They use the data to track (追踪) traffic flows among different provinces and cities. By tracking how many people are coming and going out of Wuhan, telecom companies can send warnings to areas that are being visited by large numbers of people from Wuhan.
Drones
Drones (无人机) have played a major role in disinfection (消毒) and preventing cross-infection (交叉感染) in crowded places like hospitals, railway stations and airports.
Police officers use drones to give warnings. For example, if people gather in large groups or do not wear masks, drones with cameras can record and send images of these people in real time to control rooms. The drones will then warn these people.
Robots
Robots are good helpers on the frontlines. They are used at hospitals to offer medical advice, deliver drugs or meals, act like guides, perform disinfection and do other repetitive work. In this way, robots can not only help greatly reduce the burden (负担) for medical workers, but also reduce the risk of cross-infection. They have also been used in public places like train stations and airports to check temperatures.

(2022上·福建福州·九年级校考期末)A businessman and inventor has been working on a great project that includes pulling a huge iceberg (冰山) all the way from Antarctica (南极洲).
Because of its special climate (气候), the United Arab Emirates (UAE) depends heavily on desalinated water (淡化水), which is bad for the environment. For the last six years Abdulla Alshehi has been working on a project to pull a 2km×500m iceberg from Antarctica, using modern technology to move it 5,500 miles to the Arabian Gulf, hoping to provide drinking water for millions of people for up to five years, as well as change the weather in this area.
In 1975, French scientists came up with the plan, but the plan failed two years later, as a result of technological difficulties.
Alshehi wants to pull a huge iceberg, using a belt (带子) to prevent it from falling apart during the long journey. He expects it to lose about 30% during the 10 months it would take to pull the iceberg to the Arabian Gulf, but the remaining would still leave more than enough.
How to keep the iceberg from turning into water fast is another big challenge. Alshehi said, “The iceberg is expected to reach in winter, and the iceberg is as deep as 300 meters in the sea —the deeper you go, the colder the ice is.”
More experiments will be done later this year, with a smaller iceberg going to be pulled for a short way by boat. If that works out well, preparations will be made to have a huge one moved.
25.The weather in the UAE is probably ________.
A.very dry with little or no rain
B.often rainy with strong winds
C.different from that of other places
D.too cold because of too much snow
26.To perform the project, the key point might be ________.
A.high costs B.changes in climate
C.technology support D.people’s agreement
27.What will happen if this project works successfully
A.More countries will do the same thing.
B.The world climate will be influenced.
C.People of the UAE would pay more for water.
D.The UAE will pull another iceberg several years later.
28.What can we know about the iceberg that Alshehi will choose
A.The iceberg may break up easily on the way.
B.Most of the iceberg will turn into water on the way.
C.The best time for the iceberg to arrive in the UAE is this winter.
D.The underwater part of the iceberg may be hundreds of meters below sea level.
29.The underlined word “one” in the last paragraph refers to “________”.
A.experiment B.iceberg
C.boat D.project
(2022上·福建福州·九年级校考期末)
What do you see in the picture It might look like a bunch of corn kernels (一堆玉米粒). But in fact, it is the most clear photo of the sun that we’ve ever seen and each of those “kernels” is the size of France.
The photo, as well as many others, was taken by the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii, US. The photos were released earlier this year.
The high quality of the photos was made possibly by a 4-meter-wide mirror inside of the telescope. It’s the world’s largest solar telescope mirror, according to EarthSky. “It is really the greatest leap (飞跃) in humanity’s ability to study the sun from the ground since Italian astronomer Galileo’s time,” said astronomer Jeff Kuhn of the University of Hawaii, US.
The greater quality of the images will allow scientists to study the sun more deeply and discover more of its mysteries. For example, scientists can more accurately predict what we call “space weather”. The movement of plasma (等离子体) on the sun’s surface can change the sun’s magnetic field (磁场). When this happens, a “solar storm” can break out. These storms release powerful bursts (迸发) of electromagnetic (电磁的) energy that can affect us here on Earth by damaging power grids (电网) and satellites.
By predicting solar storms more accurately, we can take steps to protect ourselves from them. “What we need is to understand the underlying physics behind space weather, and this starts at the sun, which is what the Inouye Solar Telescope will study over the coming decades,” said Matt Mountain of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), which manages the DKIST.
30.What do we know about the photo
A.It’s as big as France.
B.It was taken last year.
C.It’s the most recent picture of the sun.
D.It is the clearest photo of the sun ever taken.
31.What do we know from Paragraph 3
A.The telescope mirror makes the picture clearer.
B.Humans can only study the sun from the ground.
C.The study of the sun has not progressed since Galileo’s time.
D.The telescope uses the oldest solar telescope mirror in the world.
32.The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refers to ________.
A.a solar storm in space
B.the bursting of electromagnetic energy
C.the changing of the sun’s magnetic field
D.the movement of plasma on the sun’s surface
33.According to Matt Mountain, we study the sun to _______.
A.protect ourselves and our satellites
B.learn more about space weather
C.prevent solar storms more accurately
D.predict what will happen to the sun in the future
34.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.Each “kernel” is France in the picture.
B.The world’s largest solar telescope mirror is 4 meters long.
C.Scientists can study the sun more deeply with these photos.
D.We needn’t take steps to protect ourselves from solar storms.

What will astronauts eat when a space trip takes years
“Lots of fresh vegetables.” says Dr. Janet Williams, whose team have spent the 55 10 years learning how to grow plants in a space station. And it’s a good thing that she has 56 started her work.
As usual, astronaut George White looked 57 the closed plant room. He had planted Dr. Williams’s quick—growing seedlings(幼苗)in it, but none of the stems(茎)was showing. He opened the room to check and found the problem. The roots(根)weren’t growing 58 and the stems weren’t growing upward. On Earth, gravity helps a plant’s stems and roots to find “up” and “down”. 59 there was almost no gravity in the space station.
Dr. Williams advised to give the plants more 60 , as plants also use sunlight to find their way. And it worked. Then Dr. Williams 61 the next problem: Can we grow food on a space journey Many plants died in the space station. Dr. Williams thought 62 knew why: the space plants were hungry for air. Plants live by taking up CO2 from the air. Since a plant uses it up in, the air around, the plant needs moving air to 63 more CO2 close to its surface! Dr. Williams tried a new greenhouse that had a fan to keep the air 64 . The plants loved it. They flowered and even produced more seeds. “And this, ” says Dr. Williams, “is good news for long-term space travel.”
