The input Dad has on my career is incomparable. My earliest memories are of Dad sitting in the kitchen playing the guitar, listening to his favourite song by his favourite singer, and encouraging his little girl to poke (戳) keys randomly on the piano. Even watching Top of the Pops, he would get so passionate about music in it. We weren’t a religious family, but there was something spiritual about Dad’s connection with music.
Music also became a source of comfort for me. I failed to do well academically at school and had no friends. Being at school consumed so much of my emotional energy. Instead of going to school to learn stuff, I felt as though I was simply trying to get people to like me. Things were better, but the only time I truly felt happy was when I was at home listening to music with Mum and Dad or writing songs on the piano —and the older I got, the more powerful music felt.
Dad was always my biggest supporter. When I started giving live performances at the local bar, he was the one who drove me there and back. Freeing up that time wasn’t easy for an actor. His job might mean three weeks in the Czech Republic or working with George Lucas on The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones in Hollywood.
Dad has been involved with some amazing stuff, but Daddy Pig is the one that’s had the biggest impact all over the world. When I was flying to Australia for my first tour, I was trying to find something to watch on the little screen and I noticed they had Peppa Pig. If I’m missing home and family, I always put it on. Daddy Pig is a fairly real version of my dad —he loves chocolate cake, he’s funny and usually breaks things when he’s trying to mend them. Mum and Dad were friends with one of the producers of the show and I often wonder if he looked at my dad and thought, “That’s him …that’s Daddy Pig.”

A. By picking her up in a tight schedule.
B. By doing a demanding job as an actor.

D. By giving live performances at the local bar.
6. Why did the author mention Peppa Pig
A. It’s her favourite childhood cartoon.
B. She saw her father through Daddy Pig.
C. She took pride in this world famous cartoon.
D. It’s a cartoon about her hometown and motherland.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author’s Dad
A. Funny and honest. B. Strict and hardworking.
C. Famous and patient. D. Supportive and influential.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. B 7. D

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段“My earliest memories are of Dad sitting in the kitchen playing the guitar, listening to his favourite song by his favourite singer, and encouraging his little girl to poke (戳) keys randomly on the piano. Even watching Top of the Pops, he would get so passionate about music in it. We weren’t a religious family, but there was something spiritual about Dad’s connection with music.

根据文章最后一段“If I’m missing home and family, I always put it on. Daddy Pig is a fairly real version of my dad —he loves chocolate cake, he’s funny and usually breaks things when he’s trying to mend them. (如果我想家了,我就会放这部动画片。猪爸爸是我爸爸的真实版——他喜欢巧克力蛋糕,他很有趣,通常在修补时会把东西弄坏。)”可知,作者提到《小猪佩奇》里的爸爸是因为作者在想家时,看到猪爸爸就像是看到了自己的爸爸,因为猪爸爸是她爸爸的真实版,故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Dad was always my biggest supporter. The world has faced a food crisis of unprecedented(前所未有的) proportions in 2022—the largest in modern history, as conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis and rising costs have combined to pose great risks for hungry people across the world. As many as 828 million people go to bed hungry every night. The number of those facing acute food insecurity has risen from 135 million to 345 million since 2019. A total of 49 million people in 49 countries are suffering hunger, according to figures from the United Nations’ World Food Programme.
“We are facing an unprecedented global food crisis and all signs suggest we have not yet seen the worst. For the last three years, hunger numbers have repeatedly hit new peaks,” WFP Executive Director David Beasley said. He warned that things can and will get worse unless there is a large-scale and coordinated(协调一致的) effort to address the causes of this crisis.
There are many reasons for prevailing high levels of food insecurity. These reasons include conflicts, climate changes and weather extremes, economic slowdowns and downturns. In addition, these drivers often do not act alone. For instance, conflicts are often accompanied by economic downturns, which affect livelihoods and the ability of people to earn resources, leading to increasing poverty levels and higher prevalence(流行) of food insecurity.
Unfortunately, the main reasons for high levels of food insecurity have not improved this year. People in the Horn of Africa are facing a fifth consecutive(连续的) failed rain season in parts of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, which will constrain their production, and is likely to push many people deeper into food insecurity.
Moreover, there is uncertainty about the weather. And climatic shock affecting any major producer or exporter will introduce additional uncertainty into production and consequently prices, which in turn impact the ability to purchase food, particularly of the most vulnerable people.
8. How does the author lead in the topic
A. By making a comparison. B. By sharing personal experience.
C. By giving opinions with evidence. D. By listing facts and accurate figures.
9. What can we know from David Beasley’s words
A. This global food crisis won’t last longer.
B. It’s certain that the global food crisis will get worse.
C. We need to work together to deal with the global food crisis.
D. There will be another new peak of hunger numbers in three years.
10. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Characters. B. Operators. C. Factors. D. Activities.
11. What is the best title for the passage
A. The Issue of Food Safety B. The Unprecedented Food Crisis
C. Conflicts Causing Food Shortage D. Efforts Put into the Study of Food Insecurity
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. B
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍了世界面临着前所未有的食物危机,并分析了其产生原因。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。第一段第一句中的“The world has faced a food crisis of unprecedented(前所未有的) proportions in 2022”点明本文主题,即2022年世界面临着前所未有的粮食危机比例。接着作者在下文中通过“As many as 828 million people”“from 135 million to 345 million”“A total of 49 million people in 49 countries”等数据和实例来支撑自己的观点。由此可推测出作者是通过罗列事实和精确的数据来引入主题的。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段最后一句“He warned that things can and will get worse unless there is a large-scale and coordinated(协调一致的) effort to address the causes of this crisis.(他警告说,除非有大规模协调一致的努力来解决造成这场危机的原因,否则事情可以并且将会变得更糟。)”可知,如果不努力解决产生危机的原因,全球食物危机将会变得更为严重,由此可推测我们应该共同努力来应对全球食物危机。故选C。
【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据前一句“These reasons include conflicts, climate changes and weather extremes, economic slowdowns and downturns.(这些原因包括冲突、气候变化和极端天气、经济放缓和衰退。)”
D
Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, chances are that we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, make our eyes look bigger, and lips fuller. With a couple of taps on our mobile phone, we can get a quick fix and present the “best” version of ourselves to the world. However, the problem is, when we simply edit our imperfections away, we’re also changing the way we look at ourselves.
Last month, researchers published the article Selfies—Living in the Era of Filtered (过滤的) Photographs. The article analysed photo editing apps’ bad influences on people’s self-respect and their possibility to cause appearance anxieties. The researchers also warned that such apps make it difficult to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. “These apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty,” the article reads.
In the past, people may have compared their looks to those of famous people. But for today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. “From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look,” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance.
“Now you’ve got this daily comparison of your real self to this fake self that you present on social media,” Renee Engeln, a professor of psychology, told the HuffPost website. Engeln further pointed out that when people spend too much time making such comparisons, they may become “beauty sick” and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like. “Because between you and the world is a mirror. It’s a mirror that travels with you everywhere. You can’t seem to put it down,” she told The Washington Post. So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, “Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos ” Instead, we should think, “I feel good; I have my health.”
12. Before uploading a photo to social media, we will probably _________.
A. have an operating to make our eyes look bigger
B. use some cream to smooth our skin
C. use an app to fix our photo
D. edit our perfections away
13. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. In many ways, photo editing apps are beneficial to people.
B. Photo editing apps are likely to cause people’s anxieties about their appearance.
C. Photo editing apps can make people more beautiful.
D. Photo editing apps help people judge realistic beauty.
14. When it comes to appearance, why do many young people suffer an identity trouble
A Because they compare their looks to those of famous people.
B. Because beauty standards are set by social media.
C. Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their own likes and dislikes.
D. Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their appearance.
15. According to Engeln, what should we do
A. We should feel good about what we actually look like.
B. We should spend more time making comparison of our real self to fake self.
C. We should take a mirror with us everywhere.
D. We should try to look as good as ourselves in the filtered photos.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. A
【解析】

细节理解题。根据第一段第一句“Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, chances are that we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, make our eyes look bigger, and lips fuller.(在把自己的照片上传到社交媒体之前,我们很可能会用一款应用程序来润泽皮肤,让眼睛看起来更大,嘴唇更丰满。)”可知,在上传照片到社交媒体之前,我们可能会使用一个应用软件来美化照片。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段第二句“The article analyzed photo editing apps’ bad influences on people’s self-respect and their possibility to cause appearance anxieties.(这篇文章分析了照片编辑应用程序对人们自尊的不良影响,以及它们引起外表焦虑的可能性。)”可知,修图应用软件很可能会让人们对自己的外貌感到焦虑。故选B项。

【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, “Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos ” Instead, we should think, “I feel good; I have my health.(所以当我们照镜子时,我们不应该对自己说:“我看起来和过滤后的照片一样好吗?”相反,我们应该这样想:“我感觉很好;我有我的健康。”)”可知,根据恩格尔恩的观点,我们应该认可自己真实的外表。故选A项。

A Hearty Welcome
Chase counted his new year gifts one more time as he put a robot-shaped eraser into each envelope. “Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two.”
“Do you have one for everyone in your class ” Mom asked.
“Yep!” Chase said. “I’m ready for the party tomorrow!”
When Chase got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms. Robins and looked around shyly.
“This is Eva,” said Ms. Robins. “Will someone volunteer to show her around today “Chase raised his hand since he liked showing the new kids around and helping them feel welcome.
“Thanks, Chase, “Ms. Robins said. “Now let’s get down to our work.”
That’s when Chase realized he didn’t have a new year gift for Eva. No one else would have one either. Chase pictured his classmates’ desks covered with gifts while Eva’s desk was empty. He felt sad about that.
At a break, he was careful not to mention the party as he showed Eva around the playground. At lunchtime, he walked Eva to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. Eva had brought a packed lunch. so Chase showed her where she was supposed to sit and introduced her to some of the kids at her table.
While eating, Chase suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts with the new year gifts they exchanged. This won’t be a New Year’s Day for Eva with no gifts. But as he sat down at his table, an idea flooded into his head. He whispered it to the kids around him. Soon everyone at the table was nodding and whispering.
When they were back in the classroom after lunch, Chase told Ms. Robins about their plan. Ms. Robins smiled. “That’s very thoughtful, “she said. “Let’s go for it.”
It was math time, so Chase invited Eva to study with him. He made sure Eva sat with her back to the room so she wouldn’t notice.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Meanwhile, her new classmates were busying working on something. They were going to give Eva their “hearts”. Quickly but quietly, Ms. Robins, with an exquisite paper bag she fetched from her office, was walking around the classroom to collect the candy hearts. Growing heavy with the paper bag was the students’ welcome for their new classmate. Sitting beside Eva, Chase felt his heart racing and palms sweating. In order not to ruin the new year surprise for Eva, he pretended to be discussing math problems with her to occupy her attention. The stone in his heart finally dropped when Ms Robins tiptoed towards him and placed the paper bag on his hands.
“Here’s your new year gift, Eva. It’s from everyone.” said Chase. Surprise written on Eva’s face, she turned around and was greeted by the sunny smiles on her classmates’ faces. “Open it,” I encouraged. No sooner had she opened the paper bag than everybody cheered, “Happy New Year”. The candies which were made in the shape of hearts blurred her eyes. If only she had been able to express how much this precious gift meant to her. Springing from her seat, she stepped forward and bowed to her new but considerate classmates, who not only erased her anxiety but also planted the seed of hope in her heart. What a hearty welcome!

4. What can we learn about the author’s father
A. He was good at writing songs.

D. He was passionate about watching TV series.
5. How did the author’s father support her career
A. By picking her up in a tight schedule.
B. By doing a demanding job as an actor.
C. By watching her musical performances.
A Funny and honest. B. Strict and hardworking.
C. Famous and patient. D. Supportive and influential.
C

A. Because they compare their looks to those of famous people.
