A lady was once heating up a pot of water on a gas stove with the intent of cooking pasta for her family for dinner.
A frog fell into the pot while it was sitting on the stove. Although it wasn’t his intention to be stuck in a pot of water, he didn’t try to escape. He was comfortable enough as he was.
The lady soon turned on the flame to begin boiling the water.
As the water’s temperature began to rise, the frog was able to adjust his body temperature accordingly, so he remained in the pot without trying to do anything to change the situation.
However, as the water approached its boiling point, the frog’s body temperature could no longer keep up. He finally tried to jump out of the pot, but with water temperature continuing to increase, he didn’t have it in him to make the leap.
It was too late for the frog to save himself.
Things don’t always go as planned in life, and they certainly don’t always go the way we want them to. But, no matter how bad a situation is, it’s important to be positive and face the problem head-on. More schools around the USA are using online classes when communities run into troubles like wildfires, storms or water shortages.
In Jackson, Mississippi, a problem with the public water system left the city without safe water for several days. As a result, schools had to go online for one week in May. The time in online learning did not last long for the 20, 000 students in Jackson. Earlier this month, children went back to in-person learning when the city said water was safe for normal use.
However, online learning caused problems for children and teachers. At home, children attending online classes often had their whole family in the house. Early in 2020, school officials had high hopes for online learning. Since then, the problems with it have become clearer. The change to online learning has caused many students to fall behind where they should be in their studies. And it has added to new worries about students’ health.
In 2018, two powerful storms hit the same area, causing schools in some places to close. Some students were out of school for weeks. There were attempts(尝试) at online learning, but many children did not have laptop computers or other technology. For this reason, most schools tried to move students to other in-person buildings.
“Schools now will look first to online learning,” said Gary Henry. He is head of the University of Delaware and has been part of a research team studying online learning. For a period of a few weeks, he said it could be a step to keep students on schedule. But the pandemic(疫情) showed that it was not a good way over a long period of time. “It’s a difficult start,” said Henry. “It’s better to have the kids in the classroom so you can see how they are doing, and provide timely support to them.”
8. How long did the students in Jackson attend online courses in May
A. For two days. B. For one week.
C. For two weeks. D. For one month.
9. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The disadvantages of online classes.
B. Added worries about students’ health.
C. A challenge school officials must face.
D. High hopes parents have for their children.
10. What did most schools do when two storms hit Jackson in 2018
A. They developed an online learning system.
B. They handed out computers to every student.
C. They tried their best to have in-person class.
D. They encouraged parents to work from home.
11. Which statement will Henry probably agree with
A The storms cause all the schools to close every year.
B. Many schools in Mississippi were burned in a fire.
C. Online tests are more popular among students.
D. In-person learning is better for students’ study.
B 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据第二段“As a result, schools had to go online for one week in May.”(结果,学校不得不在五月份开展一周的线上课。)
根据第三段“However, online learning caused problems for children and teachers.”(然而,线上学习为学生和老师造成了很多问题。) 故选A。
根据第四段“For this reason, most schools tried to move students to other in-person buildings.”(因为这个原因,大部分学校都尽力把学生移到其它可以面对面上课的教学楼里。)
根据最后一段“It’s better to have the kids in the classroom so you can see how they are doing, and provide timely support to them.”(让孩子们在教室里上课是更好的,这样你就能够看到他们在学习中有什么问题,并且及时给他们提供支持。)

Last Friday, a special thing took place at the National Theater of Korea. A robot called EveR 6 led an orchestra (管弦乐队) in a performance of Korean music. Robots have led orchestras in other countries, but this was the first time ever in Korea.
EveR 6 is a robot built by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH). It’s about as tall as a person, and has a human-like face that can show feelings. EveR 6 has joints (关节) in its neck, shoulders, etc. As a result, it can move its arms quickly in many different directions.
But EveR 6 doesn’t think on its own like some Artificial Intelligence programs. Instead, it has a limited group of movements that it has been trained to perform. To make these movements as natural as possible, EveR 6’s movements are learnt from real human conductors.
When EveR 6 moved its baton (指挥棒) for the first time a piece of music rang out. Every movement of the robot’s arms brought more instruments into the mix, and the orchestra’s music grew louder and more exciting. Mr White, a human conductor, was impressed with the way EveR 6 moved. “The robot was able to present such difficult moves much better than I had imagined,” he said.
But the robot still is not nearly ready to supersede a human conductor. Mr White says the robot’s greatest weakness is that it can’t hear, “Some people think that conducting is just about hand waving and keeping the beat,” says Mr White. But a good conductor needs to listen to the orchestra, so that he or she can correct and encourage the orchestra as it plays.
Mr White doesn’t think robots are likely to replace human conductors. But he believes robots could be helpful in situations like practice parts where the same thing needs to be done many times.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The effect of EveR 6.
B. The advantage of EveR 6.
C. The importance of EveR 6.
D. The basic information of EveR 6.
13. What does the underlined word “supersede” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Look forward to. B. Take the place of.
C. Show interest in. D. Make an impression on.
14. Which of the following may Mr White agree with
A. Robots could work in some fields of conductors’ work.
B. Robots are useless in practice parts of a conductor.
C. Robots’ role as a conductor will be overlooked.
D. Robots leave human no chance to be a conductor.
15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Health. B. Sports. C. Science. D. Education.
D 13. B 14. A 15. C
根据第二段“EveR 6 is a robot built by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH). It’s about as tall as a person, and has a human-like face that can show feelings. EveR 6 has joints (关节) in its neck, shoulders, etc. As a result, it can move its arms quickly in many different directions.(EveR 6是由韩国产业技术研究院(KITECH)制造的机器人。它和人一样高,有一张像人一样的脸,可以表达感情。任何动物的脖子、肩膀等部位都有关节。因此,它可以在许多不同的方向快速移动它的手臂。)”可知,第二段的主要内容是EveR的基本信息。故选D。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第五段中“Mr White says the robot’s greatest weakness is that it can’t hear, ‘Some people think that conducting is just about hand waving and keeping the beat,’(怀特先生说,这个机器人最大的弱点是它听不见,“有些人认为指挥就是挥手和保持节拍。”)”
根据最后一段“Mr White doesn’t think robots are likely to replace human conductors. But he believes robots could be helpful in situations like practice parts where the same thing needs to be done many times.(怀特先生认为机器人不太可能取代人类售票员。但他认为,在需要多次做同一件事的练习部分等情况下,机器人可能会有所帮助。)”可知,怀特先生认为机器人可以从事某些领域的指挥工作。故选A。
根据第一段“Last Friday, a special thing took place at the National Theater of Korea. A robot called EveR 6 led an orchestra (管弦乐队) in a performance of Korean music. Robots have led orchestras in other countries, but this was the first time ever in Korea.(5日,国立剧场上演了一场特别的演出。名为“EveR 6”的机器人正在指挥管弦乐队演奏韩国音乐。机器人指挥管弦乐队在其他国家也有过,但在韩国还是第一次。)”,可知,机器人属于高科技发明,所以文章来源于报纸的“科学”版面。故选C。

【答案】When Dudu went to the middle of the bridge, the bridge seemed to be broken. Dudu was so frightened that he closed his eyes, crying loudly. Anxiously but in a calm voice, Daddy shouted to him, “Don't be afraid, son. Now you are a true adventurer and run over before the bridge is broken. Run! Don't hesitate!” Dudu did as Daddy had said. He slowly opened his eyes, took a deep breath and flew at the fastest speed. He had just stepped onto the ground when the bridge became two parts and fell into the river. Daddy and Mama stunned and then hugged each other with relief. At this point, Daddy cried to Dudu again, “Well done, dear son! Now stay where you are. Don’t go any farther. We are going to find another tree trunk to replace this one.” When they came back, they carried a sturdy trunk and fixed it firmly across the river. Finally, Daddy and Mama appeared in front of Dudu.
Dudu and his families climbed up to the top of the mountain. They did what Daddy had described at home-bathing in the clear pool, tasting delicious wild fruits and fishing by the clear lake. When they were ready to sleep in the quiet night, Dudu said excitedly, “It’s really an adventurous day! So wonderful! I love it!”

9. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A The disadvantages of online classes.
11. Which statement will Henry probably agree with
A. The storms cause all the schools to close every year.
B. Many schools in Mississippi were burned in a fire.
C. Online tests are more popular among students.
D. In-person learning is better for students’ study.
D
When EveR 6 moved its baton (指挥棒) for the first time, a piece of music rang out.
A. Health. B. Sports. C. Science. D. Education.
