Can Indoor Plants Really Purlfy (净化) the Air
Plants are very importan to human life. Through photosynthesis (光合作用), they transform carbon dioxide into fresh onygon. They____11____(believe) to remove toxin (毒素) from the air we breathe — but is this true
One famous NASA experiment____12____(publish) in 1989 has found indoor plants can clean the air by removing pollutants____13____cause cancer. Later research has found soil micro-organisms in the potted plant also____14____(play) a part in cleaning indoor air.
Based on this research, some scientists say house plants are effective natural air purifiers, and the bigger and leafier the plant, the better.____15____, however, say the evidence that plants can effectively accomplish this feat (功绩) is far from conclusive.
“There are no definitive studies to show that____16____(have) indoor plants can significantly increase the air quality in your home,” According to Luz Claudio, a professor of environmental medicine and public health. “There’s no question that plants are capable of removing volatile (易挥发的) chemical toxins from the air under laboratory conditions,” says Claudio. But in your home or office space, the idea that putting a few plants together____17____purify your air doesn’t have much hard science to support it.
Most research efforts so far, including the NASA study, placed indoor plants in small, sealed environments to assess how much air-purifying power they have. “But those studies aren’t really applicable to what happens in house,____18____in many cases, the air in your home completely turns over — that is, exchanges places with outdoor air — once every hour. In most instances, air exchange with the outside has a____19____(great) effect on indoor air quality than plants.” says Stanley Kays, a professor of horticulture (园艺学).
Disappointed as many people may be by what Kays said, the professor also believes_____20_____house plants are beneficial. Studies have shown plants can knock out stress and make people feel happier. More research shows spending time around nature has a positive effect on a person’s mood and energy levels.

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B,C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Should you listen to music when you work
Do you like to listen to music when you work
Ask this question at a party, and you’ll probably get ____31____ responses. Some will say they love it, claiming that it improves their performance; others will say they find it distracting (分散注意力的) and cannot work ____32____ with music playing in the background.
Interestingly enough, our research has found that both of these viewpoints can be true. It just ____33____ on what sort of work you’re doing.
In a recent study, we brought participants into our lab to perform a variety of tasks. They included a(n) ____34____ task-searching through word lists and crossing out words containing the letter “a” and a more difficult task—memorizing word pairs and ____35____ word to its partner. Some participants completed all of the tasks in silence, ____36____ others completed the tasks with instrumental music that was cither loud or soft, and either simple or complex, the latter meaning music with more instruments being played. Several key findings ____37____ from our study.
We found that participants who listened to simple music or no music performed about the same on the easy task. However, participants who listened to ____38____ music performed best on the easy task.
On the contrary, participants performed worse on the more difficult task when they listened to any music, regardless of complexity or volume, compared to those who didn’t listen to any music.
How should we ____39____ these findings
We suggest that people have limited mental resources from which both _____40_____ and tasks can draw. We can become _____41_____ and our minds may wander when these resources are not fully used. But we also can become over-excited and _____42_____ when these resources are used up.
Not surprisingly, we typically need to use fewer of our mental resources when we perform easy tasks, whereas demanding tasks require more brainpower. However, because we might be less _____43_____ during easier tasks, there’s a greater risk of drifting off. Music might give us the extra _____44_____ we need to overcome the monotony (单调). However, difficult tasks already demand lot of our resources. Listening to music can become too much.
So best _____45_____ should appear when we strike “sweet spot,” which may depend on the type of music and the type of task.

Every day when Glen Oliver orders his morning coffee at the drive-through window of a local cafe, he insists on paying for the order of the person behind him. He also asks the restaurant workers to tell the customer to have a great day, in case they’re not already having one.
Oliver has never made a big deal out of his own generous actions until a letter was published by a news website in November. He found out that he had not just bought someone his breakfast —he had saved a life.
According to the website, someone had written a letter stating that on July 18th, he was planning on committing suicide. The writer said that while he was at the drive-through window, he was planning on going home, writing a note and ending his life. When he went to pay for his coffee and muffin, however, the cashier told him that the man in the SUV in front of him had picked up the tab and told him to have a great day.
“I wondered why someone would buy coffee for a stranger for no reason,” said the writer. “Why me Why today If I were a religious man, I would take this as a sign. This random act of kindness was directed at me on this day for a purpose.”

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit(联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages. Often spoken by many people while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 Languages: the Americas about 1,000, Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number(中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the worlds languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction(消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico(150). Lipan Apache in the United States(two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.
53. What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times
A. They developed very fast. B. They were large in number.
C. They had similar patters. D. They were closely connected
54. Which of the following best explains "dominant" underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Complex. B. Advanced.
C. Powerful. D. Modern.
55. How many languages are spoken by less than 6, 000 people at present
A. About 6,800 . B. About 3,400
C. About 2,400 D. About 1,200.
56. What is the main idea of the text
A. New languages will be created.
B. Peoples lifestyles are reflected in languages.
C. Human development results in fewer languages.
D. Geography determines language evolution.
【答案】53. B 54. C 55. B 56. C
【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了随着社会的发展人类语言越来越少及其原因。
【53题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段中的When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit (联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other... when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
根据文章第二段中的dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.可知,英语、西班牙语和汉语正在快速替代其他语言。由此推知dominant languages意为“强有力的语言”。故选C。
【55题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的At present, the world has about 6,800 languages.和The median number (中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that. 可知,目前世界上大约有6800种语言,但是讲的人数少于6000人的占一半即3400。故选B。
【56题详解】
主旨要义题。根据文章第一段中的主题句Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going.可知,语言的产生和消失进行了几千年,但最近语言产生的少,消失的太多。故选C。
点睛:长难句解读
In recent centuries, trade, industrialisation, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
分析:dominant前的and连接两个并列句,all和前面的名词短语trade, industrialisation, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications是同位语。

The Essence of Travel: My Personal Perspective
In today’s fast-paced world, tourism is a hot topic that sparks passionate debate. To some, it’s a way to immerse oneself in foreign cultures and broaden one’s horizons. To others, it’s a waste of time and contributes to environmental degradation. In my view, tourism is a multifaceted experience.
My perspective is that tourism has the potential to be an enlightening and educational experience. It provides an opportunity to witness diverse customs, traditions, and ways of life. For instance, my travels to Japan exposed me to the rich tapestry of that country’s culture, from its art and history to its cuisine and etiquette. This immersion allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the Japanese people and their heritage, broadening my global perspective.
In conclusion, tourism is a complex phenomenon that can be both enriching and problematic. It’s about finding a balance between experiencing new things and being mindful of their impact.

According to the website someone had written a letter stating that on July 18th, he was planning on committing suicide.
When the writer arrived home, he couldn’t restrain his tears and started to think about the simple good deed that had affected him so deeply. “I decided at that moment to change my plans for the day and do something nice for someone. I ended up helping a neighbor take groceries out of her car and into the house.”
The writer says that in the months following that fateful event, he does at least one kind thing for others every day. “To the nice man in the SUV, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please know your kind gesture has truly saved a life,” he said. “On July 18, 2017, I had the greatest day.”
