When rescuers were called to rescue a “little owl (猫头鹰)”, they did not expect to find one that was too fat to fly. A concerned citizen first found the poor bird lying helplessly. Even Rufus Samkin, one of the rescuers, believed the bird to be injured. There were no wounds to be found, however, causing experts to believe the female owl was simply too wet to fly.
But it was only after a thorough drying-off and complete check up that they noted the real issue. The rescuers weighed the owl and guessed that she was “simply extremely fat” and couldn’t take off. Experts began to wonder how she got so fat. Because it’s rather unusual for wild birds to reach such a state, they decided to keep her a few weeks and monitor her.
In the end, the rescuers believed that it was simply a case of “natural fatness”. December 2021 was quite warm, which meant that there were many insects for the bird to eat. Indeed, the owl was discovered in a field that was “filled with field mice” due to the climate. “It’s been very mild here, and the owl is able to find food easily,” Samkin explained. “With the sudden food, she ate much and got very fat. She had a lovely time, but went too far.”
The researchers then put the owl on a “strict diet”, so she could shrink to a more “natural weight”. She was even put on a bit of exercise and encouraged to fly around. In the end, she was sent flying off into the countryside at a much healthier and happier weight. Hopefully, this owl won’t come upon another feast of field mice—unless she wants another few weeks at the fat camp.
4. What did rescuers think of the owl at first
A. She got hurt. B. She fell ill. C. She was too hungry. D. She was too wet.
5. Why was the bird unable to fly
A. She was too young. B. She lost her wing.
C. She was overweight. D. She was very tired.
6. What helped the owl have enough food
A. Less hunting. B. The good harvest. C. More wasted food. D. The warm weather.
7. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on
A. The fat camp. B. How to help the owl.
C. Where to free the owl. D. The need to drive mice away.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. B

【导语】本文为一篇记叙文,一位热心市民报警请求救助一只躺在地上的猫头鹰。当猫头鹰被就救助之后,研究人员发现其飞不起来的原因竟然是“肥胖”。
【详解】1. 细节理解题。根据文章第一段“A concerned citizen first found the poor bird lying helplessly. Even Rufus Samkin, one of the rescuers, believed the bird to be injured.(一位关心的市民首先发现这只可怜的鸟无助地躺着。就连救援人员鲁弗斯·萨姆金(Rufus Samkin)也认为这只鸟受伤了)”可知,起初救援人员认为猫头鹰是由于受伤才飞不起来的。故选A项。
2. 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The rescuers weighed the owl and guessed that she was “simply extremely fat” and couldn’t take off. Experts began to wonder how she got so fat.(救援人员称了这只猫头鹰的体重,猜测它“只是太胖了”,无法起飞。专家们开始怀疑她是怎么变得这么胖的)”可知,是肥胖导致了这只猫头鹰无法飞行。故选C项。
3. 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“December 2021 was quite warm, which meant that there were many insects for the bird to eat. Indeed, the owl was discovered in a field that was “filled with field mice” due to the climate. “It’s been very mild here, and the owl is able to find food easily,” Samkin explained. “With the sudden food, she ate much and got very fat. She had a lovely time, but went too far.”(2021年的12月相当温暖,这意味着有很多昆虫可供鸟类食用。事实上,这只猫头鹰是在一个由于气候原因“田鼠遍地”的地方发现的。“这里非常温和,猫头鹰很容易找到食物,”萨姆金解释说。“由于突如其来的食物,她吃得很多,变得很胖。她玩得很开心,但太过分了。”)”可知,由于天气温暖,猫头鹰有许多食物吃。故选D项。
4. 主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“The researchers then put the owl on a “strict diet”, so she could shrink to a more “natural weight”. She was even put on a bit of exercise and encouraged to fly around. In the end, she was sent flying off into the countryside at a much healthier and happier weight.(然后,研究人员让这只猫头鹰“严格节食”,这样它就能瘦到更“自然的体重”。她甚至还做了一些运动,并被鼓励飞来飞去。最后,她以更健康、更快乐的体重飞到了乡下)”可知,文章最后一段主要说明了研究人员如何帮助这只猫头鹰减肥并返回大自然。故选B项。

According to a large study of activity levels and arthritis (关节炎) pain, there seems to be no link between the amount of exercise people do and whether they develop painful osteoarthritis in their knees. But the research couldn’t rule out that high-impact forms of exercise like running bring on the condition.
Osteoarthritis is more common as people get older and is sometimes called a “wear and tear” condition. Arthritic knees often have obvious damage to their cartilage which covers and protects the ends of bones.
Earlier studies have found conflicting (矛盾的) results on whether exercise can make arthritis more likely. So Lucy Gates at the University of Southampton in the UK and her colleagues joined together the results of six such studies, which over 5,000 people took part in who firstly had no knee pain or other sign of arthritis.
At the beginning, people were asked about how much exercise they did, including playing sports, walking and cycling. They recorded the general time spent exercising each week, and their activities were graded by their metabolic equivalent, or MET (代谢当量) scores, a standard way of dividing activities into different types according to how much they raise a person’s metabolic rate.
At the end of the studies, which lasted from five to twelve years, people were also asked if they had developed knee pain or arthritis. The probability of developing arthritis wasn’t associated with activity levels, either by how much time people spent exercising each week or by their total time and MET scores.
“There’s more work to be done on telling apart risk and different types of activity,” says Gates. “The next step is to figure out how different weight-bearing activities might change things. We can’t say there’s no relationship there,” says team member Thomas Perry at the University of Oxford.
8. What is the finding of the large study
A. Too much exercise leads to arthritis.
B. Arthritis is common among old people.
C. Sports-loving persons are in better health.
D. Exercise may not be responsible for osteoarthritis.
9. What made Lucy Gates and her colleagues do the large study
A. Their love for exercise. B. The goal to treat knee pain.
C. The results of earlier studies. D. Their care for those 5,000 people.
10. How did Lucy Gates and her colleagues do the large study
A. By studying the cause of pain knees.
B. By tracking and recording for a long time.
C. By asking people to fill in online questionnaires.
D By grading and recording people’s metabolic rates.
11 In which column of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Education. B. Jobs. C. Sports. D. Arts.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. C

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了人们一直认为运动会导致膝盖疼痛,然而研究表明并非如此。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段首句“According to a large study of activity levels and arthritis (关节炎) pain, there seems to be no link between the amount of exercise people do and whether they develop painful osteoarthritis in their knees.(根据一项关于活动水平和关节炎疼痛的大型研究,人们的运动量和他们是否患上膝关节骨关节炎之间似乎没有联系)”可知,一项大型研究表明,人们的运动量与是否会患骨关节炎似乎没有关系。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Earlier studies have found conflicting (矛盾的) results on whether exercise can make arthritis more likely. So Lucy Gates at the University of Southampton in the UK and her colleagues joined together the results of six such studies…(早期的研究在运动是否会使关节炎更容易发生的问题上发现了矛盾的结果。因此,英国南安普顿大学的露西·盖茨和她的同事们将六项此类研究的结果结合在一起…)”可知,以往的关于运动是否让人更有可能患上骨关节炎的各项研究,得出的结论互相矛盾,所以Lucy Gates和她的同事们进行了新的研究。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“At the beginning, people were asked about how much exercise they did, including playing sports, walking and cycling. They recorded the general time spent exercising each week…(一开始,人们被问及他们做了多少运动,包括运动、散步和骑自行车。他们记录了每周锻炼的总时间)”及第五段“At the end of the studies, which lasted from five to twelve years, people were also asked if they had developed knee pain or arthritis.(研究持续了5到12年,在研究结束时,人们还被问及他们是否患有膝盖疼痛或关节炎)”可知, Lucy Gates和她的同事们通过长时间的跟踪和记录来完成这次研究。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“According to a large study of activity levels and arthritis (关节炎) pain, there seems to be no link between the amount of exercise people do and whether they develop painful osteoarthritis in their knees. Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes are all natural disasters.
The earthquake of 26 December 2004 resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. It was a massive (大规模的) underwater quake and occurred in the Indian Ocean. This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean. It destroyed coastlines and communities and brought death and destruction (破坏) to many people. The survivors needed fresh water, food and shelter as well as medical help. People from all over the world collect money to help them.
The surface of the Earth has not always looked as it does today; it is moving continuously although very slowly and has done so for billions of years. This is one cause of earthquakes, when one section of the Earth crashes with another. Scientists can predict (预测) where this might happen and the area between plates is called a fault line. However, earthquakes do not always happen on fault lines, which is why they are so dangerous and unpredictable.
All the disasters are very dangerous and continue to kill thousands of people each year, but they are nowhere near the most dangerous disaster to ever happen on earth. One type of event in the earth’s history has regularly killed millions of beings: asteroid impacts (小行星撞击). About once every million years the Earth is hit by a piece of rock and ice from space large enough to cause massive destruction (including earthquakes, volcanoes and ice ages) and sometimes to kill entire species. Sixty-five million years ago more than half the earth’s species were killed by such a disaster, including all the dinosaurs. Disasters on the Earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest threat to humans is likely to come from space.
12. What did the Indian Ocean earthquake cause
A. A hurricane. B. A typhoon. C. A volcanic eruption. D. A tsunami.
13. What can scientists predict about earthquakes
A. The possible time. B. The possible place.
C. The possible damage. D. The possible frequency.
14. Where will the most dangerous natural disaster come from according to the author
A. The ocean. B. The poles.
C. Outer space. D. Deep under the surface.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. How natural disasters happened
B. Where natural disasters happened most
C. When people should avoid natural disasters
D. What kind of natural disasters are most destructive
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A
【解析】

This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean.(2004年12月26日的地震是人们记忆中最严重的自然灾害之一。这是一场发生在印度洋的巨大水下地震。这引发了一场席卷印度洋的巨大海啸)”可知,印度洋地震造成了巨大海啸。故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“Scientists can predict (预测) where this might happen and the area between plates is called a fault line.(科学家可以预测这可能发生的地方,板块之间的区域被称为断层线)”可知,科学家能预测地震可能发生的地方。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段的“Disasters on the Earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest threat to humans is likely to come from space.(地球上的灾难可能看起来很危险,但对人类最大的威胁可能来自太空)”可知,作者认为最危险的自然灾害将来自太空。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean.(这引发了一场席卷印度洋的巨大海啸)”以及第三段“This is one cause of earthquakes, when one section of the Earth crashes with another.(当地球的一部分与另一部分碰撞时,这是地震的一个原因)”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讲述了自然灾害的形式、发生原因和影响,所以A项“How natural disasters happene(自然灾害是如何发生的)”是本文最好的标题。故选A项。

Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U. S. education system. He could read, yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve was failing. He had been falling since first grade. Steve was a big boy, looking more like a teenager than a twelve-year-old, yet, Steve went unnoticed…until Miss White came.
Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful lady. For the first time in his young life, Steve couldn't take his eyes off his teacher, yet, still he failed.
In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone camping there, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see whether he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one cared. Strangely, Steve never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
"Steve!" Startled he turned to look at her.
"Pay attention!" She began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
"You all did pretty well," she told the class, "except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…" She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face.
"…The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!"
She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.
After that, Steve still wouldn't do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.
"Just try it! ONE WEEK!" He was unmoved.
"You're smart enough! You'll see a change!" Nothing fazed him.
"Give yourself a chance! Don't give up on your life!" Nothing.
"Steve! Please! I care about you!"
Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him Someone, so beautiful and perfect, CARED ABOUT HIM !

Determined, he headed for the woods.
Paragraph 2
The following Monday, Miss White, gave a quiz on the weekend homework. Steve hurried through the test, and was the first to hand in his paper. With a look of surprise, Miss White took his paper.

B By tracking and recording for a long time.
C. By asking people to fill in online questionnaires.
D. By grading and recording people’s metabolic rates.
11. In which column of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Education. B. Jobs. C. Sports. D. Arts.

Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes floods, volcanoes, droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes are all natural disasters.

"Steve!" Startled, he turned to look at her.
