When I first met George, I was in my early 30s. My children were just entering school life, allowing me to escape from endless housework. At 65 George had recently left work and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, we loved painting and we met at a local TAFE painting class. Thus began a friendship that was to last for 25 years—until the day he died.
George was an energetic man who lived life to the full. He loved his family, his friends, and was loyal and outspoken. As the only male in a painting class full of women, George quite enjoyed it. He ruled the roost(栖息处)and we were his hens. He looked after all his hens.
He took to painting with passion and devotion. He carefully housed his expensive painting tools in a box—a red metal tool box—built to bear hard knocks. Not fancy, but smooth and shiny and very red.
In 2004, I learned that he was very ill and went to visit him. "He's very confused and may not recognize you, "Penny, his daughter, warned. But as I bent over, George opened his eyes. "Betty!" he said, and with surprising strength, held my hand. "I've always been hoping to leave my box to you. I'm afraid I can't paint anymore, and you have the best talent and are most likely to use it," he said. With tears in my eyes, I accepted the gift. He died two days later.
Today I still use much of his equipment kept in the box. The box is still in good shape, very red. The original shop sticker is still firmly in place although the price has worn off. But that's all right because to my mind some things, like friendship, are beyond price.
24. Why did George go to painting class
A. He wanted to please his children. B. He wanted to enjoy school life again.
C. He wanted to make new friends. D. He wanted to develop a worthwhile hobby.
25. What's the author's purpose of writing the text
A. To introduce a popular hobby. B. To describe a precious friendship.
C. To remember a red tool box. D. To appreciate her friend's help.
26. Which word can describe George according to the text
A. Honest. B. Brave. C. Caring. D. Lucky.
27. What can we learn from the text
A. The tool box is well kept by the author.
B. George took the red tool box back in the end.
C. George was shy and didn't talk much in the class.
D. The author thought their painting class was boring.

Until now the usual way we identify dogs is with micro-chipping(微芯片). But a company from South Korea has developed an app, PetNow. On this phone, I've got the new app, which is now using the dog's nose print to identify a dog, just like you can use a fingerprint with a human to make identification.
"Now show me your nose, buddy." I take pictures of the dog's nose. "Then who is the dog Is it Emma, Lenard, Karl, or Ethan "
The app analyses the data in the cloud and tells me that this is Emma. It's showing me that Emma's been reported as missing and where she was reported missing. I can share my location with the owner, so they can be reunited.
Unlike a micro-chip, which could be cut out of a stolen dog, you can't really remove a dog's nose without spoiling the dog. And by using the phone's camera to scan, anyone in theory can check a stray dog without any specialist equipment.
Recently, I've spoken to PetNow to find out why they'd settled on nose prints for dog recognition. There may be paws or ears, but some dogs really hate showing up, sharing their paws or their ears. Nose is actually exposed all the time. And after a dog become six months old the nose print stays there their entire life, so we believe that it is the best part for identification.
PetNow hopes its app will become mandatory in South Korea to help reduce the number of dogs that are abandoned by pet owners. To do that they will need the support of government and a huge marketing push, so that everybody including people who don't own a dog must install the app and know how to use it.
28. Which can be inferred from the passage
A. Dogs' prints are very similar. B. Micro-chipping a dog is out of date.
C. The app requires specialist equipment. D. The app can map out a lost dog's original place.
29. Why did PetNow settle on nose prints for dog recognition
A. Because a micro-chip can be cut out.
B. Because some dogs hate showing up.
C. Because their nose is easy to be photographed.
D. Because their nose print never changes since they were born.
30. Which of the word best explains the underlined word "mandatory" in the last paragraph
A. Safe. B. Required. C. Professional. D. Easy.
31. What's the best title of the passage
A. Taking Pictures for Dog's Nose B. PetNow Saves Abandoned Dogs
C. Nose Print Technology on the Way D. PetNow Identifies Dogs with Nose Print
D
Harvard researchers have created a tough, low-cost, biodegradable(可生物降解的)material inspired by insects' hard outer shells(壳). The material's inventors say it has a number of possible uses and someday could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The material, made from shrimp(虾)shells and proteins produced from silk, is called "shrilk". It is thin, clear, flexible and strong.
A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability. Plastic's toughness and flexibility represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and 1960s. Decades later, however, plastic's very durability(耐用性)is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags, or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then thrown into a landfill where they will stay for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years
Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill(废弃物填埋场), but its basic components are used as fertilizer(肥料), and so will enrich the soil.
Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said. Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature, found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost, and its mass production possible if it is used for products demanding a lot of material.
Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab. The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet, so they're exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They're also developing simpler production processes, which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products inside the home. They're even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers, to give it new properties.
32. What is the first paragraph mainly about Shrilk
A. Remarkable design. B. Major features.
C. Interesting name. D. Smart inventors.
33. What has become a concern about plastic
A. Using it properly. B. Producing it cheaply.
C. Developing its properties quickly. D. Evaluating its contributions fairly.
34. According to the inventors, Shrilk has great potential partly because
A. it can help plastic last longer B. it can be found in living things
C. its raw materials are enough in nature D. its mass production has been realized
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. A Possible Alternative to Plastic B. The Harm of One-time Products
C. Benefits of Insects in Scientific Research D. Recent Progress in Environmental Protection

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
"Surprise!" was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying "HAPPY BIRTHDAY", and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, "Thank you! I love you guys!"
"You're welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn't only get you this because you turned twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades."
"Of course I will.” I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn't even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn't pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn't get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing A's and B's on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn't believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.
注意:
1. 续写短文的词数应为150 左右;

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
One possible version:
Dear Sir/ Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a freshman in our school. Learning the English Reading Club is recruiting new members, I am writing to apply to be one of them.
Reading classics can not only give me a deep insight into history and culture, but broaden my horizons. The club, therefore, becomes what I’m eager to join. For one thing, challenging to read books in the original will definitely improve my English level. For another, I can make more like-minded friends, participate in its activities and contribute my ideas.
I would appreciate it if you could consider my application. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They said they had noticed that I never paid attention to them since they bought the phone for me. It was like I had my own little world. So they thought we didn't communicate as much as before. What’s more, being addicted to the phone made me pay little attention to the teachers and led to my bad performance in the test. They regretted having given me a phone, which made me ignore the family and study.
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong. A week later I tried going a whole day without a phone and it didn’t go that badly. From that day, I had a different opinion towards phones. Phones really take you away from the rest of the world. I' m not saying that phones are bad and not to use them, but you do have to spare some time to spend with your family and not get stuck with your phone all day.
听力录音稿
Text 1
W: What do you usually do during the winter holiday
M: I often travel around with my friends. But this year I must spend the time reviewing the lessons.
Text 2
M: I never knew you had such a lovely voice. You are like a professional singer.
W: Thanks. I wouldn’t say I’m professional, but I did receive some training at school. My music teacher used to be a professional singer.
Text 3
M: Mom, I just finished my paper. Can you check it before I hand it in
W: Sure, let’s take a look. Sweetie, It’s amazing.
Text 4
W: Have you finished the physics homework I didn’t finish it until 11 p.m. last night.
M: What I didn’t even know we had homework! I’m going to be in a lot of trouble.
Text 5
W: Do you have a registration card, sir
M: Yes. Here you are.
W: Please register your information here and pay for it. And I’ll make a medical record for you.
Text 6
W: You seemed to be upset today. Your father is a little worried about you.
M: You see, I’ve been offered a new job. I can’t decide whether to take it.
W: Oh, that’s easy. If it’s better than the present one, go for it.
M: But the boss and people around here are very nice and the work is challenging.
W: What about the salary
M: They say I will get a big sum.
W: Have you discussed it with your wife
M: Yes, she leaves it to me.
W: As I say it, the work is well worth a try. After all, you can get a higher salary.
M: I have to think about it.
Text 7
W: Good morning, Paul!
M: Good morning. You are so early today.
W: Yes, traffic was much less today, so I made it to the office earlier.
M: I see. How long does it take you to reach the office every day
W: Well, about an hour or so.
M: Wow, that’s quite a long journey. Do you drive a car
W: No. I take public transportation. It’s safer.
M: You are right! But I get up a little late. That gives me no other choice but to travel by motorcycle.
Text 8
M: Are your children ever naughty in public
W: Yes, they are. But I don’t punish them in public. If my children are crying because they want a toy from the store,
I will take them somewhere quiet until they are calm.
M: So you wouldn’t give them what they want
W: No. If they know they can get whatever they want by crying, they’ll just get worse and worse.
M: Oh, I see. But don’t you think you’ll lose more time to wait for them to calm down
W: Yeah. But I think it’s worth it because my children will be better behaved in the future.
M: What if you’re on an airplane
W: I’ll try to plan ahead and I need to prepare lots of snacks and fun things. Maybe they just feel bored and want to play but they can’t.
M: So it’s better to prevent bad behavior by making sure the kids don’t get bored. Well, you’re really a good parent.
W: Oh, I’m trying to be one.
Text 9
W: Ok, honey, time to take down the Christmas tree.
M: Do we have to It really looks nice in that corner.
W: Come on! The tree is falling apart, and it’s messing up the room.
M: But it makes the place feel so much like Christmas. I’d really hate to take it down.
W: But Christmas was two weeks ago! It’s been there only because we’ve been too busy to get rid of it.
M: I know, but it seems like such a shame to have to take it away.
W: Don’t you see the cat keeps playing with the lower branches
M: I know, I know. But it reminds me of the great Christmas we just had. All of us were here – my parents, your parents, the kids, and the cousins. The food was good, and everybody got what they wanted.
W: Ok, I`ll make a deal with you. We`ll leave it up until Sunday. OK
M: Fine.
Text 10
It was July the 25th, 1865. Doctor James Barry was dead. But when the people prepared his body, they were shocked to discover Doctor Barry was NOT a man but a woman. Why Doctor Barry lived as the opposite sex for more than 50 years made people curious.
Dr. James Barry was actually born Margaret Bulkley around 1789, at a time when women were blocked from most formal education. Margaret was an excellent student and would become a doctor. Her uncle, James Barry, was impressed by young Margaret, knowing her intelligence could take her far. He helped Margaret to pursue an education. In 1806, her uncle, James Barry, died.
