第一卷 选择题(50 分)
I. 完形填空((共 10 小题,每小题 1 分)
Mountain biking is a huge part of my life. It gets me out of my studio, and into the countryside. More importantly, riding as fast as I can leaves me no 1 to worry about anything that’s going on in my life. I’m too 2 because I have to pay attention to my safety all the time.
I’m in my sixties now, but I 3 cycling when I was a kid. In the summer, my friends and I would ride our bikes into the woods and see who was 4 enough to go down steep ( 陡峭的 ) hills and do big jumps. The 5 we had then weren’t made for that, and they often broke, so I used to draw pictures of bikes with big thick tyres (轮胎) that seemed 6 enough for what we were doing. They looked just like modern mountain bikes.
Later I was into skateboarding. I did that for about ten years until 7 hard surfaces started to hurt too much. Mountain biking seemed to be a safe way to keep fit, so I took it up again. I made a lot of friends and got involved (参与) in racing, which gave me a (n) 8 to train hard. I wanted to find out just how fit and fast I could get. 9 , I was very fast and I even won a couple of local races.
In the end, I 10 racing, mainly because I knew what it could mean to my career if I had a bad crash. However, I still like to do a three-hour mountain bike ride every week.

Lily Carter had no idea what present she wanted for her 14th birthday. But she’d always been interested in challenging sports, especially sports about water. So when her parents heard about an activity called coasteering —exploring rocks along the coast by climbing and swimming — they thought Lily would love it. They found a course offered at an activity centre called Porthdean, just along the coast from the family home, which was perfect. So after knowing that it was led by experienced teachers, they enrolled (使……加入) her in it.
Lily had seen a TV show about coasteering and was interested in doing it, although she’d thought only adults could take part. But then she discovered that there were also people of her age jumping from rocks into the sea, so she really wanted to go. She still asked her dad to go along too.Although Lily’s father wondered whether he would love coasteering himself, he knew how much Lily wanted someone to accompany her, so he agreed.
Lily and her dad drove to Porthdean, where they attended a lesson from their teachers to learn basic safety rules and skills. The group they joined was quite small, which meant they got lots of individual (一个人的)attention. Lily said,“The whole trip was wonderful although the water was very cold! But our teachers encouraged the whole group so much.We were ready to try all the challenges like jumping off high cliffs (悬崖)! The one I jumped off wasn’t that high, but Dad went much higher! After jumping, we actually felt like we had done lots of hard exercise in the gym! But I’ll keep the memories of that trip forever. What if you were really hungry and you didn’t know where your next meal was coming from Would you still be there, looking at the screen What if you were thirsty and you didn’t have any water, but you knew there was a clean river five miles away Would you just read an article about water The answer to all of these questions has to be“No”. You’d be out doing whatever it took to find food. You’d be well on your way to that river.
Our ancestors (祖先) lived like that every day. Men, women and children lived active lifestyles. They didn’t spend their days sitting. They spent their days moving. They were busy fighting with wild animals, hunting for food, looking for water, planting things and so on in order to survive (活下来).
The inventions have thrown away the need for us to exercise in order to live. Now, we only have to take a few steps to our fridge, or even worse, order our meals online, and we get plenty of clean water from one of the many taps (水龙头) we have in our homes. Many people sit all day at work, and then get home and sit on the sofa. Most of their relaxing activities, like watching TV and movies, surfing the Internet, and playing video games, need their sitting. We can rest all the time if we want. And that’s what many of us do.
However, this lifestyle is killing us slowly. Our bodies require movement.Exercise makes us strong. It reduces disease risk and makes us full of energy. Therefore, we should do exercise regularly. Simple exercise like walking, running or swimming can make a big difference. Staying active keeps us healthy. Let’s take action now.

C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
( ) 19. What does the author mainly want us to do in the last paragraph
A. Always stay active. B. Keep a balanced diet.
C. Have a positive attitude.
D. Try to do many challenging sports.
( ) 20. Which of the following is mentioned in this passage
A. How many inventions can change people’s lives
B. How do most people usually go to work
C. What are the advantages of doing exercise
D. How do most people feel about doing exercise
C
Many children have music classes when they attend school, and it’s thought that music can really help children learn other subjects. For example, one research project looked at what happened when a class of children were divided into groups and given a simple task to do, with one group listening to music while completing it, and the other completing the task in silence. And there was a difference between the two. The first group performed better than the second. So this seems to suggest that music can improve performance in certain areas.
So how exactly can you benefit (得益) from studying music According to some studies, musical training can develop the part of your brain that’s connected with language, so you can understand your own language better. It could also help with learning a second one. And that’s a very useful skill to have. What’s more, young people who have studied music also seem to score more highly in other areas such as maths. So it could be that these school subjects are connected in some way. For example, reading music includes learning about quarter and half notes (音符), which are basically fractions (分数), like in maths.
Music also lets you explore new ideas, think in a creative way, and act confidently. If you’re learning the guitar, for example, it can be really exciting when you’re able to start inventing your own pieces of music. And when you do that, you’re practising your listening skills because you
have to listen carefully to the music you’re making. This is especially important when performing with other people. It’s certainly important when you join a music group, for example.
One of the biggest benefits, of course, is that listening to music helps you feel relaxed and cheer you up. And creating music can make you feel the same way. That should always be in a relaxing atmosphere. And who knows Maybe your musical knowledge will open up a great career path for you in the future!
( ) 21. What does the research in Paragraph 1 show
A. Music is a help for better performance.
B. Music helps improve listening ability.
C. Music has a poor effect on our learning.
D. Music harms the learning of other subjects.
( ) 22. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. Children use music to improve grades.
B. Children should learn a second language.
C. Children understand their own language better.
D. Music helps learn languages and other subjects.
( ) 23. What does the underlined part“do that”in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Learn the guitar.
B. Explore new ideas.
C. Practise your listening skills.
D. Start making your own music.
( ) 24. What can we get from music according to the last paragraph
A. More happiness and relaxation.
B. More chances to try different jobs.
C. Better thinking and problem-solving skills.
D. Increased social connections and friendships.
( ) 25. Why does the author write the passage
A. To tell us the advantages of music.
B. To introduce different kinds of music.
C. To encourage teachers to use more music.
