When she was just 9 years old, Hilde Lysiak became famous across the United States for reporting on different news stories.
Hilde Lysiak’s father was a reporter for New York Daily News. When she was young, he often took her to work with him, so she developed a strong interest in news reporting.
At age 8, Hilde Lysiak started her own newspaper, called Orange Street News (OSN). Her family lived on Orange Street at the time. Hilde Lysiak wanted to cover stories important to everyone in her town. Following the rules her father had taught her, she researched and reported stories in her monthly newspaper. She also set up her own website and reported on YouTube.
OSN suddenly became famous when a murder happened in town, and 9-year-old Hilde was the first person to report it. Soon, news organizations around the country were writing and reporting stories about Hilde. However, not everyone was happy about Hilde’s efforts. Some people criticized (批评) her parents for allowing her to report on something as unpleasant as a murder. Others criticized Hilde for “pretending to be a reporter”. Hilde was upset about the complaints (埋怨). She responded with a YouTube video, “I never began my newspaper so that people would think I was cute,” she said. “I want to be taken seriously. I am sure other kids do, too.”
That wasn’t the first time Hilde had found it hard for people to take her seriously, which was mainly because of her age. But she never let that stop her. Hilde continued reporting.
In 2019, Hilde wrote a book for young people, called Hilde Cracks the Case, which is based on stories that Hilde wrote. The book was then turned into a TV show called Home Before Dark. For now, Hilde says she has given up reporting. But her efforts have already inspired people around the world.

Keep your goldfish in a tank which contains plants could make them clever, according to new American research. Scientists at Penn State University, in Pennsylvania, discovered that fish benefit from being in “enriched environment”. They believed that their discovery could provide a view on how to make fish successfully repopulate(使重新入住)oceans and rivers.
Professor Victoria Braithwaite explained that a lot of fish don’t survive once they are freed into the wild. She said that now fisheries(鱼场)solve this problem by breeding(繁殖)huge numbers of fish in the hope that some will survive. The professor believes that part of the reason why so many fish die is that they are bred in “pretty boring” tanks where there is always plenty of food and they are totally unprepared for free. To test this imagination, Braithwaite bred 30 fish in two separate tanks.
One contained plants and rocks which were regularly changed to ensure that the fish would not become bored, while the other was empty. When the researchers placed the fish in a maze(迷宫), the fish raised in the enriched tank made fewer mistakes when trying to escape from the maze. The performance of the fish from the enriched tank continued to improve with each experiment, and they learned to solve the maze puzzles much faster than the fish raised in the standard tank, according to the researchers.
They found increased expressions of a gene in a region of the fish’ s brain that is connected with learning and memory, a sign of increased brain function and growth. Braithwaite had concluded that interacting with the environment can influence gene expressions in the brain. “If you want to make the environment more interesting for your fish, change things around a bit,” she said.
8. What did the scientists discover according to paragraph 1
A. Fish are more likely to die if there are different kinds in a tank.
B. Goldfish can be more easily fit in with a new environment.
C. Fewer and fewer fish can repopulate oceans and rivers.
D. Enriched environment is good for fish to live in.
9. Why can many fish die after they are freed into the wild
A. They may be attacked by other fish,
B. The water might have been polluted.
C. They used to live in uninteresting tanks.
D. There are not enough plants in the water in the wild.
10 How were the fish raised in the enriched tank in the experiment
A. They ate much less food.
B. They made more mistakes.
C. They tended to become less energetic.
D. They solved the maze puzzles much faster.
11. Which is probably Braithwaite’s point of view
A. Fish’s brains have something to do with what they often eat.
B. Fish can learn and memorize things better in a boring environment,
C. Interacting with other fish has no effect on gene expressions in the brain of fish.
D. Interacting with the environment has an effect on gene expressions in the brain of fish.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. D

第二节 (满分 25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it.
The dog was about twelve weeks old. It had no collar (项圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about posting an advertisement but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely.
By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart beat with fear for what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. The owner sounded extremely eager. My hand shook, and I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the paper.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.
By then we had named the dog. It was Kevin, so we called it Kevin. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did the housework, it was there to lend a hand.
There was only one problem with this seemingly perfect picture: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I wondered in my heart whether I had to call that number in the paper and see if our Kevin was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing for me to do.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But I had to make a decision.

The woman said, “Where is my dog I would like to have a look at it.”
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
But I had to make a decision. With mixed feelings, I finally picked up my mobilephone. With butterflies in my stomach, I dialed the telephone number. Secretly, I prayed no one would answer, but someone did. The voice on the other end was that of a young woman. After describing the dog to her in detail, she immediately wanted to come over. I said that my daughters loved it very much and meanwhile apologized for not having contacted her a few days before. 30 minutes later, the bell rang and Kevin was barking. I opened the door, forcing myself to face the case.
The woman said, “Where is my dog I would like to have a look at it.” I asked the woman to come in and she quickly bent over and hugged Kevin tightly. Kevin started wagging its tail and barking excitedly as if it had recognized someone familiar. Surprised and excited, the woman told me that she couldn’t sleep well without it and thanked us for keeping her dog for these days. She offered to give me some cash as a reward, but I refused. After she took Kevin away, I cracked a smile. I knew I had done the right thing—that puppy should return to its original owner.

OSN suddenly became famous when a murder happened in town and 9-year-old Hilde was the first person to report it. Soon, news organizations around the country were writing and reporting stories about Hilde. However, not everyone was happy about Hilde’s efforts.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
