After I made it to the city center, I started to feel it might be easy for a foreigner to deal with the great size of Beijing. With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn’t go that far. Impressed with the cleanliness of the station, I bought a ticket and boarded the first subway that came along.
After a few minutes I asked in English a young man seated next to me where I should get off closest to the Friendship Hotel. Wearing a smart business suit and tie, he would surely speak English, wouldn’t he Unfortunately, he couldn’t understand me but seemed very friendly. I showed him the room card with all the information of the Friendship Hotel in Chinese characters. He looked at it, and then his eyes moved quickly to the carriage (车厢) subway map. Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand.
In Australia, raising fingers at someone is not usually nice, but this man wasn’t smiling. At the next station he showed me two fingers. Now in Australia, that’s really rude, but I got the message. When we stopped at the third station, he didn’t just point to the door, but got up, took me out of the train, and led me to the top of the stairs, and out onto the street. Then he stopped a taxi and told the driver where to take me.
All this came from a man who couldn’t speak my language, and I couldn’t speak his. I was now speechless, especially when he refused my offer of money. I felt a little embarrassed having even thought he would accept a tip.
This experience made it clear I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into misadventures.

Today’s grandparents are joining their grandchildren on social media, but the different generations’ online habits couldn’t be more different. In the UK the over-55 s are joining Facebook in increasing numbers, meaning that they will soon be the site’s second biggest user group, with 3.5 million users aged 55-64 and 2.9 million over-65s.
Sheila, aged 59, says, “I joined to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts videos and photos of them. It’s a much better way to see what they’re doing than waiting for letters and photos in the post. That’s how we did it when I was a child, but I think I’m lucky I get to see so much more of their lives than my grandparents did.”
Interestingly, Sheila’s grandchildren are less likely to use Facebook themselves. Children under 17 in the UK are leaving the site - only 2.2 million users are under 17 -but they’re not going far from their smartphones. Chloe, aged 15, even sleeps with her phone. “It’s my alarm clock so I have to,’ she says. “I look at it before I go to sleep and as soon as I wake up.”
Unlike her grandmother’s generation, Chloe’s age group is spending so much time on their phones at home that they are missing out on spending time with their friends in real life. Sheila, on the other hand, has made contact with old friends from school she hasn’t heard from in forty years. ”We use Facebook to arrange to meet all over the country,” she says. “It’s changed my social life completely.”
Parents have an important role to play if they want their kids to spend more time in real life. Peter, 38, who spends most of his time in front of a screen, is recently determined to set a better example to his kids. In the evening or at weekends, he would leave his smartphone home and take his kids out to nature.

D. Social media have become more friendly to the elderly.
9. How does Sheila feel about social media
A. Worried. B. Satisfied. C. Excited. D. Disappointed.
10. What can be concluded from the passage
A. People tend to have less social life as they get older.
B. Young people are getting away from their smartphone.
C. More young people choose to meet their friends in person.
D. Social media actually help old people to meet their friends.
11. What’s the best title for this passage
A. Different Online Habits Across Generations B. The Good Old Days Without Smartphones
C. The Next Generation of Social Media D. The Use of Smartphones at School
D
People who are at your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they influence you on your decision or action, it’s called peer pressure. All of us, at some point in our lives, have had to deal with peer pressure.
Recent studies have shown that peer pressure might cause an upside to you. It can make you reflect on your actions and make changes to your ways to become a better one. Observing others working hard to reach their goals will definitely encourage you to make a great effort to achieve something positive. When a teen knows that his teammates are practicing hard to become better players then it will directly affect his own performance. He will put in twice the time and energy to raise the level of his game and ensure he has a place on the team.
Having a group that brings positive peer pressure can also help you pick up healthy habits that can shape both your personality and your future. For example, when a child knows that some of his friends regularly read storybooks, he may get into the habit of reading. Seeing that his friends exercise daily, even he may take up the habit.
Just as some influences can be positive, some can be negative too. Peer pressure sometimes can make a fall in your self-confidence. Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, or because they worry that others might make fun of them if they don’t go along with the group. The idea that “everyone’s doing it” can influence them to leave their better judgment behind. Besides, it is common for teenagers to think that nobody understands them and that the whole world is against them. The influence of peer pressure is such that it keeps them completely away from their family and friends who mean well. They just shut themselves off and fall into bad company.
It’s likely that you’ve experienced the impact of peer pressure in different areas, ranging from the clothes you wear to the music you listen to. Sometimes it can be hard to resist(抵抗) and you may feel forced to do something you’re uncomfortable with. So being aware of and carefully choosing the influence of peers that will lead to healthy and happy experiences is a lifelong process.
12. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. A quick reaction. B. A positive influence.
C. A serious challenge. D. A possible conflict
13. What can we learn from Paragraph 4 .
A. Peer pressure can get teenagers to become less self-confident
B. Peer pressure can provide a positive model for teammates
C. Peer pressure can get teenagers to make fun of their peers.
D. Peer pressure can help teenagers improve relationship with family members
14. What does the author advise us to do about peer pressure
A. Just follow the trends ranging from clothes to music.
B. Accept it all because it is hard to resist.
C. Stay clear-minded and choose the influence wisely.
D. Fit into a healthy and happy lifestyle.
15. Which section is the text probably taken from
A. Science. B. History. C. Opinion. D. Entertainment.

“Hey!” the voice called from behind me. “Are you a girl or a duck?” I ignored the comments because I knew they were from the mean girl, Betsy. I ran to my class, causing my slight limp (跛行) to become even more apparent (明显). Already, I could see that things would be different here. At my old school, I had a group of friends to protect me. However, in this new school, I was on my own. I took my place in the first row of desks and I was thankful for alphabetic seating (按字母顺序排列座位). My last name came at the beginning of the alphabet and Betsy’s last name came at the end of it. As the weeks went on, though, I made friends with two girls named Fran and Lisa who sat near me in class. Whenever Betsy made one of her comments, they would wave it off and tell me to ignore her.
Still, I hated that I didn’t walk like everyone else. I didn’t like not being able to run as fast or as straight as the other kids and I didn’t like getting picked last for teams in gym class. Mostly, though, I really hated it when people like Betsy made negative comments about how I walked.
One day, our teacher asked us to change seats. “Class,” our teacher addressed us one morning, “you’ve been in the same seats for a full term and you’ve become friendly with the students around you. Now it’s time to change seats and make some new friends.” The class let out a collective moan (集体抱怨). As she assigned the new seating, Fran, Lisa and I looked at each other and waited for our names to be called. We didn’t want to be separated. And we especially didn’t want to sit anywhere near Betsy. Finally, Betsy sat directly behind me.
I knew this wasn’t going to be good and I soon discovered I was right. Betsy often leaned (倚靠)into my back “Quack, quack!” When I ignored her, she kicked my seat. When that didn’t work, she poked (戳) me. This went on daily until one morning I simply refused to go to school. I told Mum what had happened at school.

Paragraph 2: Then one day I did what my mother taught me and amazing things happened.

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. C

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“So being aware of and carefully choosing the influence of peers that will lead to healthy and happy experiences is a lifelong process.(因此,意识到并仔细选择同伴的影响将带来健康和快乐的经历,这是一个终生的过程)”可知,作者建议读者要保持清醒、选择积极的同伴影响。故选C项。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Betsy often leaned (倚靠)into my back, “Quack, quack!” When I ignored her, she kicked my seat. When that didn’t work, she poked (戳) me. This went on daily until one morning I simply refused to go to school. I told Mum what had happened at school.

Paragraph 2: Then one day I did what my mother taught me and amazing things happened.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
One possible version
My mother sat me down and began to talk. “Look,” she held my hand “there will always be mean people like Betsy in this world. That is hard to change. But you can change the way you cope with them. Have you ever heard of the saying ‘Treat them with kindness’ ” I shook my head. “It’s simple. Just show your kindness to the girl now and then. If she drops her pen, pick it up and hand it to her. Things like that. Just be nice to her.”
Then one day I did what my mother taught me and amazing things happened. Our teacher announced seriously that there would be an exam the next morning. As Betsy was not good at study, I offered to help her review. Betsy was surprised but grateful. She said shyly, “You’re so nice. I truly regret making those rude remarks on you. Can we be friends ” I was glad that I had followed my mom’s advice. It was just what I needed. And probably just what Betsy needed, too.
