We didn’t always live on Mango Street. Before that we lived on Loomis on the third floor, and before that we lived on Keeler. Before Keeler it was Paulina, and before that I can’t remember. But what I remember most is moving a lot. Each time it seemed there’d be one more of us. By the time we got to Mango Street we were six—Mama, Papa, Carlos, Kiki, my sister Nenny and me.
The house on Mango Street is ours, and we don’t have to pay rent to anybody, or share the yard with the people downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise, and there isn’t a landlord striking the ceiling with a broom. But even so, it’s not the house we’d thought we’d get.
We had to leave the flat on Loomis quick. The water pipes broke and the landlord wouldn’t fix them because the house was too old. We had to leave fast. We were using the washroom next door and carrying water over in empty milk gallons. That’s why Mama and Papa looked for a house, and that’s why we moved into the house on Mango Street, far away, on the other side of town.
They always told us that one day we would move into a house, a real house that would be ours for always so we wouldn’t have to move each year. And our house would have running water and pipes that worked. And inside it would have real stairs, not hallway stairs, but stairs inside like the houses on TV. And we’d have a basement and at least three washrooms so when we took a bath we wouldn’t have to tell everybody. Our house would be white with trees around it, a great big yard and grass growing without a fence. This was the house Papa talked about when he held a lottery ticket and this was the house Mama dreamed up in the stories she told us before we went to bed.
But the house on Mango Street is not the way they told it at all. It’s small and red with tight steps in front and windows so small you’d think they were holding their breath. Bricks are crumbling (坍塌、崩裂) in places, and the front door is so swollen (肿胀) you have to push hard to get in. There is no front yard, only four little elms (榆树) the city planted by the curb. Our back is a small garage for the car we don’t own yet and a small yard that looks smaller between the two buildings on either side. There are stairs in our house, but they’re ordinary hallway stairs, and the house has only one washroom. Everybody has to share a bedroom—Mama and Papa, Carlos and Kiki, me and Nenny.
Once when we were living on Loomis, a nun (修女) from my school passed by and saw me playing out front. The laundromat (投币自助洗衣店) downstairs had been boarded up (封住) because it had been robbed two days before and the owner had painted on the wood YES WE’RE OPEN so as not to lose business.
“Where do you live ” She asked.
“There,” I said pointing up to the third floor.
“You live there ” There. I had to look to where she pointed—the third floor, the paint peeling, wooden bars Papa had nailed on the windows so we wouldn’t fall out. “You live there ” The way she said it made me feel like nothing. “There. I lived there.” I nodded.
I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn’t it. The house on Mango Street isn’t it. For the time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa. But I know how those things go.
4. The size of the family ______ each time they moved house.
A. rose and fell B. slimmed down C. mounted up D. stayed the same
5. Which of the following does NOT fit the description of the family’s dream house
A. Spaciousness. B. Convenience. C. Comfort. D. Quietness.
6. The narrator’s dream house and the house on Mango Street are compared in the following details EXCEPT ______.
A. size B. garage C. yard D. stairs
7. What can we infer from the passage
A. I believed that we were less likely to leave Mango Street for a new house any time soon.
B. The conversation I had with the nun raised my self-esteem.
C. The laundromat’s owner set up a notice board by design for promotion.
D. We had to leave the flat on Loomis because we were suffering from a leaking pipe in the washroom next door.
C
Art may not be a uniquely human patent. Apes (猿), monkeys, elephants, dolphins and even rabbits can be encouraged to express themselves via pencil and paper.
New research on the artistic efforts of apes suggests that their work varies according to changes in the world around them. The new study, published in the journal Animals, focuses on hundreds of drawings produced by five female apes at Japan’s Tama Zoological Park, where keepers provided them with crayons and paper over many years as part of a behavioural enrichment programme.
One of the apes, named Molly, was especially productive. She only started drawing on her 54th birthday, but from that point on, until her death five years later, she produced about 1,300 pictures. She drew almost every day, creating more complex pictures than her companions. “I don’t know if we can describe her as a genius,” says Sueur, a biologist in the park. “Such differences are often observed between individuals of a species, with some smarter than others.” Sueur and his colleagues identified individual differences between the apes’ artistic styles, in terms of their preferred colors, the types of shapes they drew and the space they filled on the paper. Only Molly routinely filled most of the space available.
Molly’s style changed with the season too. In summer and winter, greens dominated her pictures, but she switched to pinks and purples in spring and autumn. Appealingly, she opted for red whenever another female in the group was giving birth, which may indicate that her paintings are something more than purely abstract.
“We’ve tried not to overinterpret,” says Sueur. “It could be earlier representational art.” The biologists suggest that apes may provide clues to the development of artistic skills in humans. Like children, and unlike other species known to put pen to paper, the apes needed no reward to participate in the task, suggesting that they enjoy it for its own interest.
8. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A. Female animals are talented at the creation of art.
B. The artistic style of animals remains unchanged.
C. Some animals can develop artistic skills like humans.
D. Animals are capable of creating masterpieces through efforts.
9. How does Sueur think about Molly
A. Talented. B. Human-like. C. Open-minded. D. Competitive.
10. What might be the influence of the research
A. Help people know better about apes.
B. Gain a new perspective of the evolution of art.
C. Better protect the friends of humans-animals.
D. Appeal to humans to learn from apes.
11. What can be concluded from apes’ acquiring artistic skills
A. Work hard, play hard. B. Well begun is half done.
C. Look before you leap. D. Interest is the best teacher.

Some in the Western media are sensationalizing the tepid response of Chinese consumers to new iPhone products, and some previously went so far as to suggest that China was imposing a ban on iPhones.
This doesn’t make sense. As a market economy, Chinese consumers have the right to choose from a competitive phone market.
At an event held on Wednesday, Apple Inc introduced its new series of iPhones, which come with new chips and new titanium shells and a USB-C charging cable. The iPhone 15 series comes after Huawei started selling its Mate 60 series and the Mate X5.
The launch of the two brands’ new phones generated different reactions from Chinese netizens. For example, the iPhone 15’s launch event was not on the most-searched lists of many popular Chinese online platforms such as Sina Weibo. In contrast, Huawei’s Mate 60 series was trending on Chinese social media platforms during its launch in late August.
Some researchers point out that there is absence of groundbreaking technological features in the new iPhone series; instead, they have been relying on brand loyalty to sell its smartphones. They also say that Huawei’s strong comeback gives users more choice, and will force Apple out of its comfort zone to improve its technology, although it has been the most purchased smartphone in China for years. According to market research company Counterpoint, Apple dominated the Chinese smartphone market with a share of 19.9 percent in the first quarter of 2023, followed by Chinese phone brands such as Oppo (18.3 percent), Vivo (17.7 percent), Honor (14.6 percent), Xiaomi(13.6 percent) and Huawei (9.2 percent).
This shows that the market share of Chinese brands is growing quickly. Among China’s more than 1 billion smartphone users, more than half are using middle-range handsets. They already have reasonable expectations for the money they will invest in electronic devices. They also attach great importance to innovative functions of smart phones that can cater to their individual needs. So the fact that a number of Chinese smartphone makers are rapidly catching up and even surpassing iPhone in certain features is really a good news for them. Plus most domestic-brand smartphones are within their reach.
The market share of smartphone brands in China clearly shows that smartphone sales are decided by market factors and not political factors. A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry told a news conference on Wednesday that there are no laws, regulations or policy documents prohibiting the purchase and use of mobile phones of foreign brands such as Apple.
China is now the third-largest market for Apple and has also been a growth engine and manufacturing hub for Apple for years now. It brings in roughly 20 percent of the US tech giant’s total revenue and is a key part of the supply chain for iPhones, MacBooks and other devices.
It’s time the Western media stopped churning out these “ban” stories.
12. Which of the following words is closest in meaning with the underlined word in paragraph 1
A. tense B. unenthusiastic C. passionate D. indifferent
13. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage
A. China is a major competitor to Apple in the smartphone market, affecting its global operations.
B. Huawei’s performance in smartphone market will prompt Apple to focus on expanding its market presence in China.
C. Apple may have to prioritize technological innovation in its future smartphone release.
D. The Chinese government discourages but does not prohibit the purchase and use of mobile phones of foreign brands.
14. What are the reasons behind the growing market share of Chinese smartphone brands in China
A. Chinese government subsidies (补贴) and support for local smartphone brands.
B. The aggressive marketing strategies employed by Chinese smartphone companies.
C. The innovative functions and superior technology of Chinese smartphone brands.
D. The affordability and tailored features of Chinese smartphone brands.
15. Which of the following could be the best title of the passage
A. Chinese ban on iPhones Think twice.
B. Apple’s iPhone 15 series: facing a ban in China.
C. Huawei’s Mate 60 series: outcompeting Apple’s iPhone 15.
D. Chinese smartphone market: growing rapidly.

Who Invented Silk
Silk is a thin, yet extremely strong, fiber. It is made from protein that silkworms produce when they make their cocoons. Thousands of years ago, ancient Chinese craftsmen began weaving silk fiber into a soft, smooth fabric. A precious textile, silk was at first reserved for exclusive use by the Chinese imperial court. Chinese officials decided that silk-making methods must remain China’s secret. ____16____
The Silky Secret Gets Out
However, the existence of silk did not remain a secret. On diplomatic visits to neighboring rulers, Chinese envoys carried gifts of silk. By the first century BC, the Romans had become familiar with this exotic(异国情调的)luxury item. ____17____ Western rulers issued edicts (法令)that controlled silk prices. As in China, silk was designated a solely royal fabric. Trading for silk was principal motivation for merchants who searched for routes.
From Europe to the Far East
Over the centuries, different main routes developed. ____18____ Tradesmen travelling east or west could choose among routes that crossed many regions of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Far East. ____19____ Trading vessels carried goods from China and Southeast Asia across Indian Ocean to Africa, India, and the Near East. Sea routes even reached Venice, Italy, by crossing the Mediterranean.
____20____
The Silk Road played an important role in bringing diverse cultures and peoples into contact. To make successful deals, merchants had to learn the languages and customs of the countries they crossed. As they journeyed along the Silk Road, people shared knowledge about arts, crafts, literature, science, and technologies. Over hundreds of years, cultures, languages, and religions influenced one another. Perhaps Chinese silk influenced history more extensively than any single famous person you can name.
A. How Silk Changed History
B. How Silk Brought People Together
C It soon grew wildly popular in the West.
D. In addition, sailors discovered sea routes.
E. Rulers ordered that anyone who revealed these methods to foreigners would be put to death.
F. Later they came to be known as “The Silk Road”, but the word “Road” should have been plural.
G. But, there were many roads, not just one. A German geologist named the trade routes “The Silk Road”.

B

【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn’t it. The house on Mango Street isn’t it. For the time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa. But I know how those things go.(那时我就知道我必须有一所房子。一个真正房子。一个我可以指出来的。但事实并非如此。芒果街上的那所房子不是。妈妈说,暂时是这样。“暂时的,”爸爸说。但我知道这是怎么回事。)”可推测,作者知道自己一家短期内不太可能离开芒果街去找新房子。故选A。

China is now the third-largest market for Apple, and has also been a growth engine and manufacturing hub for Apple for years now.
A Chinese government subsidies (补贴) and support for local smartphone brands.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. A

For example, the iPhone 15’s launch event was not on the most-searched lists of many popular Chinese online platforms such as Sina Weibo. In contrast, Huawei’s Mate 60 series was trending on Chinese social media platforms during its launch in late August.(这两个品牌的新手机发布在中国网民中引起了不同的反应。 选项A“tense(紧张的)”;选项B“unenthusiastic(不热情)”;选项C“passionate(热情的)”;选项D“indifferent(漠不关心)”。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“Some researchers point out that there is absence of groundbreaking technological features in the new iPhone series; instead, they have been relying on brand loyalty to sell its smartphones. They also say that Huawei’s strong comeback gives users more choice, and will force Apple out of its comfort zone to improve its technology, although it has been the most purchased smartphone in China for years.(一些研究人员指出,新iPhone系列缺乏突破性的技术功能;相反,他们一直依靠品牌忠诚度来销售智能手机。他们还表示,华为的强势回归为用户提供了更多选择,并将迫使苹果走出自己的舒适区,改进其技术,尽管多年来它一直是中国销量最高的智能手机。)”可知,华为的强势回归为用户提供了更多选择,并将迫使苹果走出自己的舒适区,改进其技术,从而更具竞争力。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第六段“This shows that the market share of Chinese brands is growing quickly.
根据文章第一段“Some in the Western media are sensationalizing the tepid response of Chinese consumers to new iPhone products, and some previously went so far as to suggest that China was imposing a ban on iPhones.(一些西方媒体正在大肆渲染中国消费者对新iPhone产品的不温不火的反应,一些媒体此前甚至暗示中国正在对iPhone实施禁令。)”、第二段“This doesn’t make sense. As a market economy, Chinese consumers have the right to choose from a competitive phone market.(这是没道理的。作为一个市场经济国家,中国消费者有权从竞争激烈的手机市场中进行选择。)”以及最后一段“It’s time the Western media stopped churning out these “ban” stories.(西方媒体是时候停止炮制这些“禁令”故事了。)” 故选A。

A How Silk Changed History
B. How Silk Brought People Together
C. It soon grew wildly popular in the West.
