Let's protect the cultural heritage around us
Good morning, everyone! I'm glad to stand here and the topic of my speech is “Let’s
protect the cultural heritage around us".
We all know cultural heritage, which includes ancient buildings, natural scenery and the
wisdom of ancestors, is the essence of our culture. It can be a reflection of society, creativity
and historic moments. Through the cultural heritage, we can have a connection to certain social
values and customs. Therefore, each of us has the responsibility to protect it. As for the specific
measures, first, when visiting the historic sites, we should follow the rules to avoid destroying
cultural heritage. Second, we should try our best to promote and pass on our cultural heritage in

【答案】One possible version:
The dragon gladly accepted. Yonk kept his promise and he spent the entire year without
flying or warming himself with the dragon’s fire breathing. The dragon also kept his promise
and both did exactly the same every year afterwards. Yonk’s idea became so popular that,
within just a few years, many giants and dragons were spending their days bowling together.
They forgot about their battles and cruelty and treated each other as friends rather than
enemies.
Much later Yonk lost his first bowling match but he was no longer afraid of losing.
Because he knew in his heart that there would be no more revenge since he had been friends
with his “dragon slaves”. By putting a stop to the enslavement of dragons, he had ended their
hatred and sowed the seeds of almost impossible peace between giants and dragons. Building
true peace requires those who feel they have the right to attack to take steps towards
forgiveness and understanding.

【原文】
In 2014, Amazon released the world’s first voice-controlled “smart assistant”, called the
Echo. It performed a variety of functions, including setting alarms, creating to-do lists, and
providing real-time information such as weather, traffic and other news. Two years later,
Google came out with the $180 Google Home. In 2017, the toy company Mattel came out
with Aristotle, their idea of a personal assistant, aimed at kids. If you are in the market for one
of these smart assistants, there are a number of things to consider. For instance, Google Home
can answer a wide variety of questions and has a music library of 35 million songs. It also has
many functions that work well with the TV, and is $50 cheaper than Amazon Echo. Echo can all
be operated just by voice command. It has a music library of 2 million songs. Mattel’s Aristotle
can do most of what the other two can, but is meant to be more of a personal companion to
children. It can be used as a baby camera in your child’s early years, and still be useful until
around middle school. It plays interactive games with them, reads to them, and serves as an
instructional resource as the children grow up. In summary, all three have their benefits.

Hua Sheng and Lu Sheng, a retired Tibetan couple, have become trailblazers(开拓者)of
grape growing and wine making in their old ages.
Lu Sheng learned grape planting and wine making from her grandmother's sister. Since
they retired, the couple have moved to Lhasa from the village of Yakhadi. Though the fact that
the region's capital, which is 3,600 meters above sea level, is considered unfit for growing
grapes, Lu Sheng and Hua Sheng began an ambitious project in 2015, planting grapes in Tsalna,
a town in the suburb of Lhasa.
They received support from the local government, which is committed to developing
business and the economy. The couple's project provides jobs for rural residents, and, as a
result, the government has considered the project part of its poverty relief program.
"Lhasa is an ideal place for planting French grape varieties that are resistant to cold,
drought and disease, and adaptable to high﹣altitude and open﹣air planting," Lu Sheng said.
"Thanks to the plateau's sunshine and organic planting, our grapes grow very well here in
Lhasa. The grapes are a bit sour and sweet, and they have a high anthocyanin(花青素)
content," she said. Anthocyanins, which are in grape cells and contribute rich color to wine,
are water﹣soluble(水溶性的).
In 2018, Hua Sheng and Lu Sheng expanded their project, planting on nearly 6.67 hectares.
In order to familiarize Tibetan farmers with grape planting and wine making, they taught the
skills to local villagers.
"We have successfully taught the local farmers how to grow grapes and make wine over
the three years. They now have a new source of income besides traditional farming and
herding," Hua Sheng said.
Yudron, a resident of Nam, said she was grateful to the grape planting project in her
village, which has contributed to her income and quality of life. "After working in the
vineyards for years, now we know how to make wine. We drink both barley and grape wine
now. We love grape wine more, though, as it is healthier."
24. What did the couple do after their retirement?

You may not realize it, but your day goes around plants. It's not just mealtime.
Commercial plants are used in everything from medicine to food, paper, bioplastics, and other
products. However, as global climate change intensifies, growing many of these plants will be
a major challenge. Massive heatwaves and droughts are already affecting farmers: Over the
next three decades, California’s San Joaquin Valley alone could lose up to 535,000 acres of
farmland as a result of shrinking water supplies.
Jennifer Brophy, an assistant professor of bioengineering at Stanford, wants to help solve
that problem. In order to push plants to respond to extreme climates, Brophy is building what
she calls “genetic circuits(基因回路)”. In addition to changing the genes within plant cells,
this method also changes how and when those genes are activated. If the plant senses a specific
sugar or agrichemical, it can express one protein; if it senses another signal, it'll express a
different protein, kicking off an entirely separate chain of events. If both signals are there, the
plant may be able to express something else entirely. “Using circuits, you can have plants
respond in new ways to all these different inputs,” she says.
“A plant doesn't necessarily know what's coming. It just knows if it's hot or temperate (温
和的) right now,” says Brophy. This can lead to problems when the weather becomes unstable.
A plant that usually flowers in spring may flower in winter if there are a few unseasonably
warm days. When temperatures plummet again, the flowers die, which ruins a year's crops.“It’d
be great to be able to communicate with plants and tell them, ‘Hey, you should wait on that
flowering,'" she adds. Controlling plants’ growth at this level is exciting, but actually putting it
into practice is a long way off. At the moment, Brophy is testing the concept in the lab using a

small weedy plant called Arabidopsis. She ’s still early in the process of figuring out how to
activate certain genes on command. While the research is in its early stages, it may help pave
the way for the next generation of farming.
28. What’s the author's purpose of mentioning San Joaquin Valley
A. To prove the necessity of growing more plants.
B. To point out the barrier to increasing water supplies.
C. To show the harmful effect of climate change on farming.
D. To tell the root cause of intensified global climate change.
29.What's the expected function of genetic circuits
A. Predicting plants' response to different inputs.
B. Increasing the attractiveness of commercial plants.
C. Providing more energy for plants out of season.
D. Controlling plants’ growth on demand.
30. What does the underlined word “plummet” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean
A. Rise. B. Steady.. C. Drop. D.Permit.
31. What does the author think of Brophy's research
A. Unpractical. B. Meaningful. C. Representative. D.Comprehensive.

As we work to ease biodiversity losses and seek to reduce climate change, restoration is an
important part of the global solution. But while it is widely understood that ecosystem
restoration is the right thing to do, there is far less understanding of what exactly it means, and
how it is to be achieved.
One of the most obvious misunderstandings about ecosystem restoration is that it is all
about action, especially planting trees. It is important to understand that forest and woodland
ecosystems are not the only crucial environments to restore. Ecosystem restoration consists of a
huge range of different systems, from farmland soils and grassland systems to our seas and
oceans.
Ecosystem restoration is not always about actively intervening(介入). In many instances,
passive intervention can be just as effective, if not more so, than active. This involves simply
letting nature take the reins. In short, in ecosystem restoration, what we don't do can be as
important as what we do. Often nature already has the answers. But there are situations in
which humans have damaged the environment to such a degree that natural restoration is
impossible. This is when carefully designed action is required.
Another key thing to remember is that we cannot succeed in ecosystem restoration without
local people ’ s involvement or, ideally, their leadership. When a community feels a sense of
belonging and a deep connection with the land, this provides a firm foundation for future
conservation and restoration work.

While I dislike taking an overly human-centered view, environmental issues cannot be
separated in our complex modern world from socio-economic ones. We need to look at people
and the planet as a whole and appreciate the complex web of human life and its interaction with
the natural world in order to form practical restoration solutions. It is important to understand
how nature can thrive (繁荣) and still provide humans with the things we need. It is only when
we consider the natural environment and human society as interconnected that we can really
continue to make progress.
32. Which shows the right understanding of ecosystem restoration
A. Ecosystem restoration involves a variety of systems.
B. Direct action on forest ecosystems should be avoided.
C. Community-led efforts should be reduced.
D. The more trees we plant, the better ecosystems will be.
33. In what case active intervention is often a must
A. Active intervention can improve the local economy
B. The cost of passive intervention is high.
C. A large population relies on natural resources.
D. Nature fails to restore itself..
34. According to Paragraph 5, what should be done to make practical restoration plans
A. To learn from developed countries.
B. To take both social factors and nature into account.
C. To make a study of local natural resources.
D. To put environmental protection first.
35. What is mainly talked about in the text
A. What challenge people face in ecosystem restoration.
B. How people can benefit from ecosystem restoration.
C. How to repair damaged ecosystems more effectively.
D. Why ecosystem restoration becomes urgent.

An impossible peace
Once upon a time, on a piece of land there lived giants and dragons, who had been
enemies for years on end. However, after years of bloody fights, they had learned a lot. They
were no longer so foolish as to wage wars with terrible battles in which thousands died. Now,
every year they held bowling matches instead. A giant competed against a dragon. Whoever
lost would become the winner’s slave. If a dragon won, he could use the giant’s muscles for
all that heavy lifting. If a giant won, he would have free flights and fire for the whole year.
That was how they prevented their deaths and yet with the match going round and round,
they hated each other more and more. Every year the winners were so cruel to the losers, in
revenge (报复) for the time they had lost. The losers would be at the mercy of the winners,
giants tired from lifting loads while dragons worn out from constant flying and breathing fire.
There came a time when what mattered most was not winning the bowling match, but not
losing.
Yonk the Giant was the best bowler, and the most afraid. He had never lost. Many
dragons had been his slaves and they were dying to see him lose so they could get their
revenge. This was why Yonk was terrified of losing. Especially since last year’s match, when
he missed his first ever strike, he had decided that something had to change.
The following year he won again. When he arrived home, his slave dragon feared the
worst but Yonk did nothing bad to him, for he had a different idea in mind.
“This year you will not be my slave. We will go bowling and I will teach you all of my
techniques and secrets. But you must promise me one thing: when you win your match next
year, you will not be cruel to your giant. Do the same as I am doing with you.”
