American Mark Levine wears many hats in China — educator, author, volunteer, musician, sociologist, cross-cultural communicator, winner of the Chinese government's Friendship Award, and most noticeably, wide-brimmed.
The bushy-bearded 73-year-old is perhaps best known among the Chinese public for writing American country music-style songs about China that he performs in full cowboy regalia (盛装). He often sings and plays his guitar to the accompaniment of the erhu played by his friend, Fu Han, in their musical duo(二人组), In Side Out. Levine has staged hundreds of performances in 15 provinces, and one had an audience over 50,000, he says.
Fu Han recalls he once performed in a well-known bar in Beijing's Houhai area, and she joined him on stage with her erhu. “A group of tourists from northern Europe came up and watched and filmed us, and started singing with us. I realized a Chinese instrument and face can help better tell China's stories to foreigners. So, they officially became band mates. I'm the ‘in’ and he's the ‘out’ in In Side Out,” she explains.
Levine plans to release a song book when he reaches 100 songs. He has so far written over 70 tunes that he calls “musical stories from my Chinese journey”, since he settled in Beijing in 2007 to take an occupation at Minzu University of China, where he still works, largely on account of its ethnic diversity.
Levine says two highlights during his time in the country have been winning the Friendship Award in 2014 and receiving his Chinese “green card” in 2016. Levine hopes it increases cross-cultural understanding. One of his friends says Levine is particularly apt for the task. “Mark is a perfect ambassador for humanity, so to speak, who has found his ideal place here,” he says.
14.What can we learn from Levine's musical achievement

Masks that helped save lives during the coronavirus pandemic(冠状病毒大流行) are proving a deadly threat for wildlife.
Macaques (猕猴) have been spotted chewing the straps( 带子) off old and tossed-aside masks in the hills outside Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur — a potential choking(窒息的) threat for the diminutive monkeys. And in an incident that captured headlines in Britain, a gull (海鸥) was rescued by the RSPCA in the city of Chelmsford after its legs became tangled (缠绕) in the straps of a disposable (一次性的) mask for up to a week. The animal welfare charity was alerted(警报) after the bird was spotted, motionless but still alive, and they took it to a wildlife hospital for treatment before its release.
The biggest impact may be in the water, with green groups alarmed at the flood of used masks, latex (乳胶) gloves and other protective gear(装置) finding their way into already polluted seas and rivers. Conservationists in Brazil found one inside the stomach of a penguin after its body washed up on a beach, while a dead puffer fish was discovered caught inside another off the coast of Miami.
French campaigners Operation Mer Propre found a dead crab trapped in a mask in a saltwater lagoon near the Mediterranean in September.
Masks and gloves are “particularly problematic” for sea creatures, says George Leonard, chief scientist from US-based NGO Ocean Conservancy.“When those plastics break down in the environment, they form smaller and smaller particles. Those particles then enter the food chain and impact entire ecosystems,” he added.
There has been a shift towards greater use of reusable cloth masks, but many are still choosing the lighter single-use varieties. Campaigners have urged people to throw them away properly and cut the straps to reduce the risk of animals becoming trapped. Oceans Asia has also called on governments to increase fines for littering and encourage the use of washable masks.
18.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.Serious incidents of wildlife hunting.
B.Scientific research into wildlife living habits.
C.How wildlife is affected by disposable masks.
D.How human beings protect endangered wildlife.
19.How do masks endanger sea animals
A.Sea animals may get twisted by masks.
B.Sea animals can't find their way home.
C.Sea animals have difficulties in finding food.
D.Sea animals are forced to leave their habitats.
20.What is suggested in the last paragraph
A.Putting bans on single-use masks.
B.Getting rid of used masks properly.
C.Giving mask producers heavy fines.
D.Reducing the risk of washable masks.

Cater to the Plant
Just after a few weeks, I noticed the plant leaves were losing their green color. I found spider plants don't do well with intense afternoon sunlight. So I completely rearranged all my plants in my living room to cater to their specific sunlight needs. 25 .
